00:00The Trump administration is rolling out a new plan to pay local law enforcement agencies

00:05that help immigration officials carry out deportations.

00:10Starting October 1st, local and state police taking part in the federal 287G program

00:15will have salaries, benefits, and even some overtime costs covered.

00:20Officers who hit certain enforcement targets can also qualify for quarterly bonuses up to $1,000 each.

00:30The 287G program isn't new, but it has expanded significantly under President Donald Trump.

00:37It now includes nearly 960 agreements across 40 states, with more than 8,500 officers trained

00:45and another 2,000 in training, according to DHS.

00:50What is new is that these partnered agencies are about to get paid for their cooperation

00:55with the federal government to help find and arrest criminal migrants

00:59that the DHS describes as the worst of the worst.

01:03The new DHS incentive would cover salaries and benefits of trained officers,

01:08and the officers themselves can receive up to $1,000 each quarter,

01:13depending on their success rate in capturing criminal migrants.

01:17On top of that, ICE is in the middle of a massive hiring push.

01:21The agency wants to add 10,000 new officers by the end of this year

01:26and says it has received more than 100,000 applications.

01:31ICE offered signing bonuses up to $50,000, student loan repayment,

01:36and starting salaries, which can top $90,000.

01:40ICE's hiring push and incentivizing new partnerships with local police

01:45are part of President Trump's larger immigration agenda,

01:49one that calls for mass deportations and a major expansion of enforcement.

01:55Supporters say the strategy is needed to boost public safety.

01:59Critics argue it will damage trust between police and migrant communities.
