00:00A major Supreme Court ruling to tell you about this morning, one that could rewrite the balance
00:07of power in Washington. In a divided order, the justices cleared the way for President Trump
00:13to remove Rebecca Kelly Slaughter, a Democratic commissioner at the Federal Trade Commission.
00:18The move revives a 90-year-old fight over presidential power. Since 1935, courts have
00:24said presidents cannot fire independent agency heads without cause. Now the High Court will hear
00:30arguments in December on whether to strike that precedent down. Justice Elena Kagan, in a fiery
00:36dissent, warned the ruling gives presidents, quote, full control of all those agencies, letting them
00:43remove, quote, any member he wishes for any reason or no reason at all. The decision builds on earlier
00:51cases where the court let Trump fire other Democratic commissioners, and it could soon affect the Federal
00:56Reserve, where a challenge is still pending. The case will be back before the justices in December.
