00:32
Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:34
We begin with that stunning development out of Washington.
00:37
A grand jury has indicted former FBI Director James Comey.
00:41
It's a story we flagged for you yesterday here, and now it's official.
00:45
The Justice Department charging Comey with making false statements and obstruction
00:49
in what some see as an extraordinary escalation
00:52
in President Trump's push to prosecute his political enemies.
00:55
Prosecutors say Comey lied during 2020 congressional testimony
01:00
about the FBI's investigation into Trump's 2016 campaign and Russia.
01:05
The indictment was rushed through before the statute of limitations was set to expire next week.
01:10
The move follows weeks of pressure from Trump,
01:13
who fired the U.S. attorney overseeing the case after he declined to bring charges.
01:17
Trump then installed his former personal attorney,
01:21
Lindsey Halligan, as the new top prosecutor in Virginia.
01:24
On Truth Social last night, Trump called the indictment, quote,
01:27
justice in America.
01:30
Hours before the indictment dropped, reporters pressed the president on the case.
01:34
Here's what he had to say.
01:35
I think I'd be allowed to get involved if I want, but I don't really choose to do so.
01:40
I can only say that Comey's a bad person.
01:44
He's a sick person.
01:45
I think he's a sick guy, actually.
01:47
He did terrible things at the FBI.
01:50
And but I don't know.
01:52
I have no idea what's going to happen.
01:54
Attorney General Pam Bondi in a post on X said no one is above the law.
01:58
The indictment reflects this Department of Justice's commitment to holding those who
02:03
abuse positions of power accountable for misleading the American people.
02:08
Just one night before the indictment, Bondi was at the White House dining with President
02:11
Trump in the Rose Garden.
02:13
The image posted online shows Bondi seated with Trump and other allies.
02:17
Comey answered with a defiant message of his own, insisting he's innocent.
02:22
Somebody that I love dearly recently said that fear is the tool of a tyrant.
02:27
And she's right.
02:29
But I'm not afraid.
02:32
And I hope you're not either.
02:33
I hope instead you are engaged.
02:36
You are paying attention and you will vote like your beloved country depends upon it, which
02:43
it does.
02:45
My heart is broken for the Department of Justice, but I have great confidence in the federal judicial
02:51
system and I'm innocent.
02:53
So let's have a trial and keep the faith.
02:57
U.S. District Judge Michael Nachmanoff, a Biden appointee, was tapped to oversee this
03:02
case last night.
03:04
President Trump is rolling out a new round of tariffs targeting everything from prescription
03:09
drugs to furniture.
03:10
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said starting next Wednesday, October 1st, the U.S. will impose
03:16
a 100 percent tariff on imported branded drugs, a 25 percent tariff on imports of all heavy
03:22
duty trucks, 50 percent tariffs on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, and 30 percent
03:27
for upholstered furniture.
03:29
He claims the truck tariff will protect manufacturers from, quote, unfair outside competition.
03:35
He says cabinet and furniture imports have surged to levels that are damaging American companies.
03:40
The president is also threatening to expand the list, including new tariffs on lumber and
03:45
semiconductors.
03:47
Now to a highly unusual directive from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordering hundreds of
03:52
U.S. generals and admirals to drop everything and assemble next week at Quantico, Virginia.
03:58
And still, no one knows why.
04:00
The Washington Post was first to report the order went to every commander with the rank of
04:05
brigadier general or above, 07 through 010, along with their senior enlisted advisors.
04:11
That's potentially more than 1,000 of the military's top leaders pulled from posts from
04:16
around the world.
04:17
According to the Washington Post, the order states, quote, all general officers in command
04:22
in grade 07 through 010 and their general officer senior enlisted advisors are directed to
04:28
attend within operational constraints.
04:31
The meeting is set for Tuesday at a Marine base in Virginia.
04:34
The Pentagon says Hegseth will address his senior military leaders, but offered no agenda.
04:40
It comes amid a string of high-profile firings and Hegseth's push to rebrand the Pentagon as
04:45
the Department of War.
04:46
Critics inside and outside the military call it unprecedented, dangerous, and possibly political.
04:52
Officials worry about security risks of putting so many top commanders in one room.
04:57
Others tell the Post the surprise summit could signal more purges at the highest ranks.
05:02
This morning, a manhunt that began on Memorial Day weekend is over.
05:07
Suspected child killer Travis Decker is now confirmed dead.
05:11
Investigators say DNA matched Decker to remains found last week near Leavenworth, Washington.
05:16
He had been on the run since May when authorities believe he took his three daughters, ages 5,
05:21
8, and 9 camping, then suffocated them.
05:24
Searchers found his body less than a mile from where his daughters, Olivia, Evelyn, and Peyton
05:29
were discovered.
05:30
The coroner is still trying to determine the time and cause of death.
05:34
Police had scoured the Cascade Mountains for months with dogs, drones, and dive teams,
05:38
but found nothing until last week.
05:41
Decker's ex-wife says he was homeless at the time and struggling with the personality disorder.
05:46
TikTok is here to stay.
05:49
President Trump has signed an executive order clearing the way for the app to be controlled
05:53
by U.S. investors.
05:55
The move comes months after a ban on the Chinese-owned app, initiated under the Biden administration,
06:00
was set to take effect.
06:02
Under the new agreement, TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, will hold less than 20% of the platform.
06:07
The remaining 80% will go to a group of U.S. investors, meeting the qualified divestiture
06:13
required by federal law.
06:15
Trump says Oracle's Larry Ellison will have a big role in the deal.
06:19
Tech entrepreneur Michael Dell and media mogul Rupert Murdoch are also involved,
06:23
though it's not clear yet who all of the investors will be.
06:31
It's Friday, so let's turn to your comments and questions from YouTube.
06:34
This is Straight From You, where we fact-check your questions and break down what's true,
06:39
what's not, and what's somewhat murky.
06:41
All right, here's what stood out this week.
06:43
First up, Jimmy Kimmel.
06:44
One viewer writes that his suspension was not Trump's call.
06:48
It came from his network.
06:49
So here's the deal.
06:50
Disney polled Kimmel after his remarks on the killing of Charlie Kirk, and some affiliates
06:55
preempted him as well.
06:58
Legal scholars tell the AP the First Amendment bars government censorship, not private employers,
07:04
though.
07:05
Networks can legally suspend programming.
07:06
But the debate heated up when FCC Chair Brendan Carr warned that stations could face agency action.
07:14
The FCC commissioner, Ana Gomez, called that contrary to the First Amendment.
07:19
Kimmel is back on the air, as you know, but not everywhere.
07:22
Some affiliates still are not carrying him, and the FCC is signaling more scrutiny ahead.
07:27
Next, a health question.
07:29
A viewer wanted to know if there's a safer option than Tylenol during pregnancy.
07:33
Timely topic, right?
07:35
Acetaminophen, the main ingredient in Tylenol, remains the default.
07:39
The CDC and the FDA call it the safest choice if taken in low doses, short-term, and under medical guidance.
07:46
Some studies link heavy use to developmental conditions, but experts say those show association, not proof.
07:55
Other factors, like genetics, may explain the risk.
07:58
As for alternatives, ibuprofen and naproxen are not recommended, especially later in pregnancy.
08:05
Bottom line, most doctors still see Tylenol as the best over-the-counter option, but as always, check with your provider.
08:12
Finally, a question about the Gaza flotilla.
08:15
One viewer said that if drones were actually striking the boats, they'd be sunk.
08:20
Not necessarily.
08:21
So here's what we found.
08:23
Activists, including Greta Thunberg, say the drones were about intimidation, calling them scare tactics.
08:29
Reports described 13 explosions near vessels south of Greece, jammed radios blasting ABBA songs, and objects dropped on deck.
08:37
The result damaged sails and equipment, shaken crews, but no boats did in fact sink.
08:43
And there were no casualties.
08:46
Italy and Spain took it seriously, though, enough to dispatch Navy ships for rescue operations.
08:51
Israel has not claimed responsibility, but insists aid should go through its ports.
08:56
All right.
08:57
Hope this helps.
08:58
Keep dropping those questions and comments, and we'll tackle the biggest ones again next week.
