00:00President Donald Trump announced plans Monday to take over Washington, D.C.'s police department
00:05and streets to address what he claims are rampant high crime rates.
00:12I'm deploying the National Guard to help reestablish law, order of public safety
00:17in Washington, D.C., and they're going to be allowed to do their job properly.
00:22The plan has angered some D.C. officials, like the city's Attorney General Brian Schwab,
00:27who D.C. voters elected in 2022. Schwab wrote, quote,
00:31The administration's actions are unprecedented, unnecessary, and unlawful. There is no crime
00:37emergency in the District of Columbia. Violent crime in D.C. reached historic 30-year lows last year
00:43and is down another 26 percent so far this year. We are considering all of our options and will do
00:49what is necessary to protect the rights and safety of district residents. Vice President of the Landmark
00:55Legal Foundation Michael O'Neill told Straight Arrow News the president is within his powers
00:59to order a federal takeover of the city's police department. He said the power was granted through
01:04the Home Rule Act of 1973. The act is most famous for giving D.C. residents control of governmental
01:11affairs, establishing a city mayor and 12-member city council. O'Neill supported Trump's order and
01:17had this to say on the state of crime in the city.
01:20It really boggles the mind how anybody could allow Washington, D.C. to descend into the murders
01:25and the assaults and the violent crime that is on us on a daily basis.
01:31More information is expected to follow Trump's announcement with further detail on his
01:36administration's exact plans for the district's police department and how it will beautify the
01:40capital city. For Straight Arrow News, I'm Kaylee Carey. Find more on this story right now by
