00:00All right, let's get you guys all caught up with the breaking news of Jets, QB1, Justin Fields going down in practice and having to be carted off the field with our Jets beat writer for the post, Brian Costello.
00:10Kaz, thanks for hopping on in such short notice.
00:13I feel like the Jets have been doing everything right up to this point.
00:16So can you kind of talk to us about what you saw on the play?
00:19You're out there at practice and what have you heard about the injury?
00:24Ian Rappaport kind of reported that it's a dislocated toe.
00:27Yeah, Brandon, I mean, he was rolling out and there really was it was nondescript play.
00:32None of us really realized he was hurt until you saw him limping off.
00:36You know, they think maybe he got stepped on by a teammate, but it really, you know, wasn't dramatic.
00:42He wasn't on the ground or anything like that rolling around or, you know, what we've seen from different injuries in the past.
00:48Then, you know, he was over in a tent with the doctors for a while and they took a shoe off.
00:53They were looking at it. We didn't know if it was an ankle or what it was at that point.
00:56It ends up it's his toe. And then, you know, we say carted off.
01:00We should clarify, like the car came over.
01:03He was in the passenger seat of the car and they drove him to the building, which is a pretty good walk from from the practice field.
01:09So this isn't like, you know, sometimes you see when you hear carted off, you think, oh, they had to bring the cart out to the middle of the field and put a guy in the back.
01:17That wasn't like this. He was kind of just catching a lift and he limped into the building.
01:21So I do think all things considered, you know, it seems pretty encouraging there.
01:27The Jets are doing more tests before they say exactly what it is.
01:30But there's no reason to, you know, to doubt.
01:33You know, I report report that it's a dislocated toe, which if that's the case, you know, he's going to be out probably, you know, for a little while.
01:40But it's not not something that's going to go into the season.
01:43Are you think it's too early to kind of talk about who they could bring in?
01:48The fields is going to miss some significant amount of time.
01:52I know Tyrod Taylor is a veteran backup.
01:54He's been in the league for a long time, but Brady Cook has no NFL experience.
01:58So what do you think?
02:01What do you think the Jets do if Justin Fields does have to miss some some time here?
02:07Yeah, the indications right now are that this is not going to be something where he misses time in the season.
02:11So I think that's a different story than, you know, he's just missing training camp or time during training camp.
02:16I think they'll go with what they have and maybe add one more guy just to have a camp arm, but not a not someone who's fighting for the starting job.
02:22They have Adrian Martinez also here, who's on the Jets last year and who was in Detroit.
02:27So he knows the system.
02:28So I think they could get through training camp with Tyrod Taylor, Adrian Martinez, Brady Cook, and maybe one more guy to take some snaps.
02:35But to me, this isn't, you know, like significant injury enough right now where they have to think about bringing in someone to be a starting quarterback.
02:43So I know it's only been a small sample size, but during the spring, how did Tyrod Taylor look in this new offense?
02:50This offense is built around Justin Fields' skill set.
02:53They're kind of similar in the way they play.
02:55But do you think Tanner Inkstrand is going to have to tweak the offense any?
03:00I don't think they're going to tweak anything in the preseason.
03:02You know, I have a feeling that they weren't going to show much anyway.
03:05And, you know, he's going to, they'll go through.
03:07I mean, look, Tyrod Taylor is a 14-year veteran.
03:10He throws a really nice football.
03:12He's fun to watch in practice.
03:14Like, he makes good throws.
03:16He gets the ball out of his hand quick.
03:17So I think they're comfortable with him as the backup right now.
03:22And obviously they kept him from last year, you know.
03:25And so, to me, I think they're going to be content with where they are right now.
03:30And this isn't an injury that's serious enough where they're making big changes at this point to the playbook or anything else.
03:36The question, to me, more, Brandon, is just what Justin Fields is missing right now and how much time he's going to miss.
03:42This was his first year in the offense.
03:44And he needed this time in training camp to get up to speed and to get used to the offense and, you know, get on the same page with Tanner Inkstrand.
03:51Now he's losing valuable time.
03:54I'm also wondering, you know, a toe injury, even if it's not serious, can linger.
03:58Does this affect his running ability when the season gets here?
04:01You know, he's a different type of quarterback.
04:04If it was just a drop back passer, I don't think you're very worried about it.
04:07So, but Fields' mobility is his superpower.
04:10And so, does this affect him at all?
04:12I think that's probably what the Jets are worried about right now.
04:15Kaz, how did the offense look after Fields went down for the rest of practice?
04:22Yeah, it's hard to say, Brandon, because I kind of was in a fog for the rest.
04:25You know, we weren't, I wasn't really locked in on what the offense was doing.
04:28We were just trying to figure out what we just saw.
04:31But I thought that, you know, there was no noticeable difference.
04:34They think that they weren't, they weren't terrible right now.
04:36I think the defense won the day.
04:38But, you know, they made some plays, I thought.
04:41The Fields made a really nice pass down the seam to Garrett Wilson.
04:45And that one, they had some nice plays.
04:48But it was just kind of, once Fields went down, that was really the story of the day.
04:54We knew that was the story of the day.
04:55And that's where all the attention went.
04:56All right, Kaz, well, thanks for making yourself available, man.
