If the Giants want to go down to Washington, D.C. and beat the Commanders week one, they're going to have to stop Jaden Daniels.
00:08
This dude was absolutely phenomenal his rookie year, and he led Washington to a number four ranked offense in the entire NFL.
00:16
Neutralizing both his legs and his arms is not going to be easy by no means.
00:22
He hurt the Giants defense in both matchups last year using both, but it can be done.
00:28
The Giants put that on tape as well.
00:30
So here are two plays to show how Shane Bowen's defense needs to get after Jaden Daniels and know your enemy film breakdown.
00:38
All right, let's get this thing going.
00:40
All right, first play.
00:42
It's all about containing Jaden Daniels' legs.
00:45
It's third and 13 here, y'all.
00:47
This guy can run, he can throw the football, and he loves his mama.
00:51
The boy is absolutely dangerous.
00:53
You see the run here.
00:54
Third and 14, he scrambles for the first down.
00:58
Let's go back.
00:59
Let's go back to the beginning of this play, and we're going to pause it here so I can set this thing up.
01:03
All right, what we are seeing here right now is an empty formation.
01:07
You see the tight, you see the running back here, and then you see the tight end here.
01:11
They're all in one-by-one splits.
01:13
They're going to help their tackles, left and right tackles, by chipping.
01:17
Chipping means that they're going to get a little oomph up on that pass rusher to the outside.
01:22
So right here, it's about Brian Burns.
01:24
You get a little something on there before you get out into your route concept or whatever route that you're running.
01:31
The Giants right here are rushing four, and they're playing coverage behind it,
01:36
but you have to account for Jaden Daniels' legs.
01:40
Let's start the play.
01:42
So you see Brian Burns right here.
01:45
Let's keep an eye on him as his play gets going.
01:47
He gets chipped here, right?
01:48
And then he gets wide, and Paul's there.
01:51
That opens up the lane.
01:53
Now, on top of that, Elijah Chapman right here, this defensive tackle, gets pinned to the inside,
02:00
and that creates a huge rushing lane for a guy that runs 4-3-6.
02:07
Jaden Daniels takes off right here.
02:10
Whatever is not there.
02:11
So the Giants rush four, which means they're dropping seven in coverage,
02:15
which means that you're going to have bodies on bodies in terms of covering up the route concepts.
02:22
You have to keep this guy bottle up and get off of the field here.
02:26
That was a third-down situation where the Giants could have got off the field,
02:30
got the football back to their offense.
02:32
But, hey, Jaden Daniels is just as dangerous with his feet than he is with his arms.
02:38
The Giants, it's all about gap integrity and being in your rush lanes
02:43
and staying disciplined at that same time to be able to get him down
02:48
and get off the field so your offense can get the football.
02:51
We're going to move on to the next play.
02:53
All right, another third-down.
02:56
You have to get off the field on third-downs when we're talking about the commanders.
03:00
Jaden Daniels does a great job of being able to lengthen a drive and put points on the board,
03:07
but you're talking about one of the best offenses in the NFL when it comes to third-down efficiency.
03:13
So this play here, you've earned the right to rush.
03:16
We talk about Giants defense putting offenses in positions to where they have to throw the football
03:22
to where we can really evaluate the pass rushers and the defensive line that they have on this team.
03:28
They're a strength.
03:29
If you earn the right to rush, that means you've also earned yourselves chip blocks.
03:34
And, again, it's something that the commander's offense does a lot.
03:38
Same formation as the play I said before.
03:43
You got – but this time they swap out the tight end being one-by-one with the receiver,
03:50
and they still have Austin Eckler here, the running back, and a one-by-one to help with those chip blocks.
03:56
It buys just a little bit more time for that quarterback to feel comfortable
04:00
to throw in the football down the field.
04:03
All right.
04:03
But this time with the chip block, you're not going to see Jaden Daniels take off.
04:08
You're going to see one of these chip blockers, this Austin Eckler here,
04:11
this running back here chip, and getting to the route concept.
04:16
The Giants defensive line, you have to expect the chip, especially Abdul Carter.
04:21
You saw it in the Jets game week two in the preseason.
04:24
But you have to expect that and still keep your gap integrity.
04:27
Let's go ahead and start the play here.
04:30
We're going to focus on Austin Eckler.
04:32
You see Eckler there?
04:34
Can we run that back?
04:34
Can we run that back?
04:35
Run that back, run that back, run that back, run that back, run that back.
04:39
Here we go.
04:40
All right.
04:41
I'll start.
04:41
I'll start.
04:42
If we can wipe here.
04:43
All right.
04:43
We're going to start by looking at Austin Eckler right here, running back.
04:47
A lot of you guys have had this guy on your fantasy teams, leagues, whatever, for a long time.
04:52
He is a beast in this NFL.
04:54
So you see him with the chip here.
04:55
He chips, makes Aziz Ojolari, goes wide.
04:59
But instead of going to the flat or going to sitting over top of the football, he gets himself involved with the concept.
05:07
Pause it here.
05:09
This is a mesh concept.
05:10
It's a rub concept.
05:12
It's some sort of shallow cross drag route concept to where it's man to man across the board.
05:19
You see every Giants defender playing man to man.
05:21
This player right here usually picks whoever, whatever man to man defender is playing or running with Eckler.
05:30
But there's no one here.
05:31
The chip block throws the safety off and the safety is late.
05:35
Run it back just a little bit because I want to look at the pocket and see what Jaden Daniels does.
05:40
We talk about how he can be effective and hurt you with his feet.
05:44
But he can hurt you with his feet as well to help his arm buying time.
05:50
You see him kind of back up a little bit here.
05:53
It's a regular two, three, five-step drop.
05:56
It's shotgun, so it's a little bit different when it comes to the drop.
05:59
But he buys time for Eckler to get open.
06:02
If you follow his eyes throughout this play, he goes through about one to three reads.
06:08
Let's check, let's check Jane Daniels out.
06:11
And this is a rookie quarterback at this point.
06:14
Looks to the left, looks off, looks right, looks for a deeper guy.
06:18
Backs up just a little bit and holds himself in the pocket.
06:22
We don't give this man enough flowers as a pocket passer as well.
06:26
Buys enough time to see Austin Eckler become open.
06:29
He makes a guy miss, makes two guys miss, gets upfield.
06:32
This was a back-breaking play for the Giants defense who needed to get off the field at that time.
06:39
But again, it's all about, when we talk about earning the right to rush
06:43
and putting yourselves into a third and long situation, a third and throw.
06:49
We like to call it a third and throw situation,
06:51
which the Giants defense in this pass rush can really thrive.
06:55
It's all about stopping Jane Daniels' legs
06:57
and putting yourself in position to be able to hurt him
07:01
when he tries to put the football in the air.
07:04
Shane Bowen last year in two weeks, week two and week nine,
07:08
Shane Bowen's the Giants defensive coordinator,
07:10
did a lot of great things of being able to blitz Jaden Daniels,
07:14
get him uncomfortable.
07:15
But at the times where they kind of rushed three to four
07:18
and dropped in the coverage,
07:20
Jaden Daniels was able to hurt the Giants defense
07:22
both with his feet or, you know, his feet, his legs,
07:26
and then with his arms as well.
07:29
You've heard the reports or you've seen reports about
07:32
is Shane Bowen going to use Abdul Carter as some sort of spy
07:35
because he's so athletic and he can keep up with the Jaden Daniels.
07:39
But if you take a spy, if you put a player in a spy position,
07:43
you take them out of coverage.
07:44
It's going to be a chess match.
07:46
But at the end of the day, you've put some stuff on the table
07:49
on how to contain Jaden Daniels.
07:51
If they can do it, they win this football game, week one.
07:54
All right, you just saw two plays on what not to do.
07:58
But what I think Shane Bowen is going to do,
08:01
he's going to apply pressure up the middle,
08:03
and then he's going to have his guys contain Jaden Daniels on the edges.
08:08
Again, it's a lot easier said than done.
08:11
But this year's Giants defense,
08:13
especially that D-line and those pass rushers,
08:15
had the athleticism and the ability to do that.
08:19
Now, I'm anxious to see how much Shane Bowen blitzes
08:22
compared to rushing, let's say, three or four,
08:25
and then playing coverage on the back end.
08:28
I do expect him to use someone to spy Jaden Daniels.
08:32
But on the flip side of that, that takes someone out of coverage.
08:36
It's going to be a chess match for sure.
08:38
But the D-line has a chance to make a statement game one
08:41
by locking up one of the game's up-and-coming quarterbacks.
