00:00If the Giants want to go down to Washington, D.C. and beat the Commanders week one, they're going to have to stop Jaden Daniels.
00:08This dude was absolutely phenomenal his rookie year, and he led Washington to a number four ranked offense in the entire NFL.
00:16Neutralizing both his legs and his arms is not going to be easy by no means.
00:22He hurt the Giants defense in both matchups last year using both, but it can be done.
00:28The Giants put that on tape as well.
00:30So here are two plays to show how Shane Bowen's defense needs to get after Jaden Daniels and know your enemy film breakdown.
00:38All right, let's get this thing going.
00:40All right, first play.
00:42It's all about containing Jaden Daniels' legs.
00:45It's third and 13 here, y'all.
00:47This guy can run, he can throw the football, and he loves his mama.
00:51The boy is absolutely dangerous.
00:53You see the run here.
00:54Third and 14, he scrambles for the first down.
00:58Let's go back.
00:59Let's go back to the beginning of this play, and we're going to pause it here so I can set this thing up.
01:03All right, what we are seeing here right now is an empty formation.
01:07You see the tight, you see the running back here, and then you see the tight end here.
01:11They're all in one-by-one splits.
01:13They're going to help their tackles, left and right tackles, by chipping.
01:17Chipping means that they're going to get a little oomph up on that pass rusher to the outside.
01:22So right here, it's about Brian Burns.
01:24You get a little something on there before you get out into your route concept or whatever route that you're running.
01:31The Giants right here are rushing four, and they're playing coverage behind it,
01:36but you have to account for Jaden Daniels' legs.
01:40Let's start the play.
01:42So you see Brian Burns right here.
01:45Let's keep an eye on him as his play gets going.
01:47He gets chipped here, right?
01:48And then he gets wide, and Paul's there.
01:51That opens up the lane.
01:53Now, on top of that, Elijah Chapman right here, this defensive tackle, gets pinned to the inside,
02:00and that creates a huge rushing lane for a guy that runs 4-3-6.
02:07Jaden Daniels takes off right here.
02:10Whatever is not there.
02:11So the Giants rush four, which means they're dropping seven in coverage,
02:15which means that you're going to have bodies on bodies in terms of covering up the route concepts.
02:22You have to keep this guy bottle up and get off of the field here.
02:26That was a third-down situation where the Giants could have got off the field,
02:30got the football back to their offense.
02:32But, hey, Jaden Daniels is just as dangerous with his feet than he is with his arms.
02:38The Giants, it's all about gap integrity and being in your rush lanes
02:43and staying disciplined at that same time to be able to get him down
02:48and get off the field so your offense can get the football.
02:51We're going to move on to the next play.
02:53All right, another third-down.
02:56You have to get off the field on third-downs when we're talking about the commanders.
03:00Jaden Daniels does a great job of being able to lengthen a drive and put points on the board,
03:07but you're talking about one of the best offenses in the NFL when it comes to third-down efficiency.
03:13So this play here, you've earned the right to rush.
03:16We talk about Giants defense putting offenses in positions to where they have to throw the football
03:22to where we can really evaluate the pass rushers and the defensive line that they have on this team.
03:28They're a strength.
03:29If you earn the right to rush, that means you've also earned yourselves chip blocks.
03:34And, again, it's something that the commander's offense does a lot.
03:38Same formation as the play I said before.
03:43You got – but this time they swap out the tight end being one-by-one with the receiver,
03:50and they still have Austin Eckler here, the running back, and a one-by-one to help with those chip blocks.
03:56It buys just a little bit more time for that quarterback to feel comfortable
04:00to throw in the football down the field.
04:03All right.
04:03But this time with the chip block, you're not going to see Jaden Daniels take off.
04:08You're going to see one of these chip blockers, this Austin Eckler here,
04:11this running back here chip, and getting to the route concept.
04:16The Giants defensive line, you have to expect the chip, especially Abdul Carter.
04:21You saw it in the Jets game week two in the preseason.
04:24But you have to expect that and still keep your gap integrity.
04:27Let's go ahead and start the play here.
04:30We're going to focus on Austin Eckler.
04:32You see Eckler there?
04:34Can we run that back?
04:34Can we run that back?
04:35Run that back, run that back, run that back, run that back, run that back.
04:39Here we go.
04:40All right.
04:41I'll start.
04:41I'll start.
04:42If we can wipe here.
04:43All right.
04:43We're going to start by looking at Austin Eckler right here, running back.
04:47A lot of you guys have had this guy on your fantasy teams, leagues, whatever, for a long time.
04:52He is a beast in this NFL.
04:54So you see him with the chip here.
04:55He chips, makes Aziz Ojolari, goes wide.
04:59But instead of going to the flat or going to sitting over top of the football, he gets himself involved with the concept.
05:07Pause it here.
05:09This is a mesh concept.
05:10It's a rub concept.
05:12It's some sort of shallow cross drag route concept to where it's man to man across the board.
05:19You see every Giants defender playing man to man.
05:21This player right here usually picks whoever, whatever man to man defender is playing or running with Eckler.
05:30But there's no one here.
05:31The chip block throws the safety off and the safety is late.
05:35Run it back just a little bit because I want to look at the pocket and see what Jaden Daniels does.
05:40We talk about how he can be effective and hurt you with his feet.
05:44But he can hurt you with his feet as well to help his arm buying time.
05:50You see him kind of back up a little bit here.
05:53It's a regular two, three, five-step drop.
05:56It's shotgun, so it's a little bit different when it comes to the drop.
05:59But he buys time for Eckler to get open.
06:02If you follow his eyes throughout this play, he goes through about one to three reads.
06:08Let's check, let's check Jane Daniels out.
06:11And this is a rookie quarterback at this point.
06:14Looks to the left, looks off, looks right, looks for a deeper guy.
06:18Backs up just a little bit and holds himself in the pocket.
06:22We don't give this man enough flowers as a pocket passer as well.
06:26Buys enough time to see Austin Eckler become open.
06:29He makes a guy miss, makes two guys miss, gets upfield.
06:32This was a back-breaking play for the Giants defense who needed to get off the field at that time.
06:39But again, it's all about, when we talk about earning the right to rush
06:43and putting yourselves into a third and long situation, a third and throw.
06:49We like to call it a third and throw situation,
06:51which the Giants defense in this pass rush can really thrive.
06:55It's all about stopping Jane Daniels' legs
06:57and putting yourself in position to be able to hurt him
07:01when he tries to put the football in the air.
07:04Shane Bowen last year in two weeks, week two and week nine,
07:08Shane Bowen's the Giants defensive coordinator,
07:10did a lot of great things of being able to blitz Jaden Daniels,
07:14get him uncomfortable.
07:15But at the times where they kind of rushed three to four
07:18and dropped in the coverage,
07:20Jaden Daniels was able to hurt the Giants defense
07:22both with his feet or, you know, his feet, his legs,
07:26and then with his arms as well.
07:29You've heard the reports or you've seen reports about
07:32is Shane Bowen going to use Abdul Carter as some sort of spy
07:35because he's so athletic and he can keep up with the Jaden Daniels.
07:39But if you take a spy, if you put a player in a spy position,
07:43you take them out of coverage.
07:44It's going to be a chess match.
07:46But at the end of the day, you've put some stuff on the table
07:49on how to contain Jaden Daniels.
07:51If they can do it, they win this football game, week one.
07:54All right, you just saw two plays on what not to do.
07:58But what I think Shane Bowen is going to do,
08:01he's going to apply pressure up the middle,
08:03and then he's going to have his guys contain Jaden Daniels on the edges.
08:08Again, it's a lot easier said than done.
08:11But this year's Giants defense,
08:13especially that D-line and those pass rushers,
08:15had the athleticism and the ability to do that.
08:19Now, I'm anxious to see how much Shane Bowen blitzes
08:22compared to rushing, let's say, three or four,
08:25and then playing coverage on the back end.
08:28I do expect him to use someone to spy Jaden Daniels.
08:32But on the flip side of that, that takes someone out of coverage.
08:36It's going to be a chess match for sure.
08:38But the D-line has a chance to make a statement game one
08:41by locking up one of the game's up-and-coming quarterbacks.
