00:00Kind of a fast riser in our profession, outstanding quarterback at Boise State.
00:06A lot of records there, then gets into the league and done a great job.
00:10Started as quarterback coach and then been a coordinator at three different spots.
00:14Obviously most recently with Super Bowl champions.
00:18Known Kellen for a little bit, really good man, good football coach.
00:24And he's had his team competing hard.
00:27They've had three games, I'd say very competitive games.
00:30One game that got away from them in Seattle.
00:33But three competitive games, two at home.
00:35One score games that came down to the wire in a two-minute drive.
00:39One with eight seconds left where they have a chance to tie it.
00:41With a great throw by Rattler to Johnson.
00:44And a fourth and two, they end up getting sacked against San Francisco.
00:47But right down to the wire.
00:48Played Buffalo last week.
00:50God bless you.
00:52Played Buffalo last week.
00:53Seven minutes or so left in the fourth quarter at a really tough place to play.
00:57It's a one-score game.
01:00Really explosive running back to me where it starts with Camara.
01:05Dynamic in every sense of the word.
01:07Fast.
01:07Vision.
01:09Can take it the distance.
01:11Can catch the ball.
01:12Can run routes.
01:13He's been a very good player for a long time.
01:14And, you know, use action game off of that to try to create some explosives and downfield throws to the receivers who are very talented.
01:23Alave.
01:24Shahid.
01:25Tight end that can run.
01:27And four first-round picks on an offensive line with a second-round pick at playing center.
01:31So, you know, I think Rattler.
01:33I've known Rattler for a bit.
01:35Went to his high school.
01:36I was at Alabama.
01:37One of the top recruits in the country.
01:38Timing, rhythm, passer, accurate, and has good athleticism.
01:44Can make plays with his legs.
01:47Run him on some runs.
01:48He's good on scrambles.
01:50Coach Daly coming in there to be the defensive coordinator.
01:53A couple veterans on the defense with Cam and Davis, who I think have been really good players for a long time.
02:01They've got a good defensive scheme.
02:04And two, three really good returners.
02:07The guys that I mentioned before.
02:08And Miller is running back number five there, who's also productive on offense.
02:12So, they've had three really competitive games that have come down to the fourth quarter.
02:17And the game out at Seattle, that kind of got away from them a little bit.
02:20But tough place to play.
02:22Tough environment to play.
02:24We need a good week of practice here.
02:27Injury-wise, going to be three players that aren't practicing today.
02:33Dex is sick.
02:34That's the reason why he won't be here.
02:35And GBR has got a vet day.
02:39And then Tracy won't practice.
02:41He's getting closer.
02:42Everybody else will be doing something.
02:45Are you going to start the clock on any of the guys from the reserve list?
02:49I don't think so this week.
02:51Did Dex play sick Sunday?
02:53No.
02:54Nope.
02:56What's your definition of sick?
03:00Much less than 100%.
03:01Okay.
03:01Yeah.
03:03But he played pretty good, though.
03:04Correct.
03:05On draft night, how much were the Saints a team you were worried about in terms of either taking Jackson at nine or trading up from 40 ahead of you guys when you were eyeing Jackson?
03:22Getting old, Ryan.
03:25Focused on this week right here.
03:27So we've got a big week ahead of us.
03:30Make some improvements in a lot of areas.
03:33I was talking about four months ago.
03:35How did Andrew Thomas come along?
03:38Good.
03:38Yep.
03:39What do you think we're seeing out of Jalen Hyatt, O'Connor, those guys with the opportunity that exists now?
03:45That Papa?
03:46Yeah, it was.
03:48Yeah, again, those guys have been working hard.
03:51They're out here for a reason.
03:53Expect them to know what to do and go out there and do it at the highest level they can do it.
03:58Dave, Jackson's played in a lot of loud stadiums in the SEC, but this is kind of a different field sometimes to Superdome.
04:05Talk about the challenges he's going to have to face this week.
04:07Yeah, well, offensively, we're going to have to do a good job of communicating.
04:12From getting the play in to Jackson communicating to whatever snap counts we choose to use relative to how the sounds are there, which is usually loud.
04:22You simulate it and try to do the best you can here at practice, but it's definitely one of the keys in terms of being able to communicate and operate and stay on track
04:30and eliminate some of the pre-snap things that when you play at a dome stadium, it's loud like this.
04:36So we're going to work at it out here, blast it as loud as we can, and just make sure we're on point with our communication.
04:43Does it make it harder to go in a huddle when you're in an environment like that?
04:46I'd say it varies.
04:52Whether or not we do much of that this week, it's something we thought we could do last week a little bit.
04:58But I'd say just playing in a loud environment stadium is a challenging thing offensively.
05:04Calls, snap, I mean, there's a million different things that come into play.
05:10So we had our walkthrough a few minutes ago, and we could hardly hear during the walkthrough,
05:15and that's what we'll do throughout the week.
05:17You've been here for Kayvon's whole career.
05:21How high a level is he playing at now, and what do you, assuming you think it's one of his better stretches,
05:27what do you attribute that to?
05:30Kayvon's been a pro since he's been here, and he's done everything we've asked him to do.
05:35I think Charlie Bullen has done a really good job with him,
05:37but give credit to the player of how he approaches things, the way he practices,
05:41how he studies tape, his effort on game day, his unselfishness to play different spots for us.
05:47He's really had a good start to the season for us.
05:49How big an opportunity is this for Jalen Hyde?
05:55He really hasn't produced much last year, hasn't done it much early this season.
06:01How do you view his role now, and how big an opportunity is it?
06:05Yeah, we'll see what it ends up being.
06:06He's worked hard since he's been here.
06:10He's worked hard these first few weeks of the season, whether that's on the look team,
06:14whether that's taking reps with the ones during practice.
06:17He's doing everything he can do to be as ready as he can be.
06:21Do you have to pull back at all, reps-wise, with Jackson off the Sunday?
06:26Nope.
06:27Were you part of the meeting with the NFLPA recently, the other day?
06:31That's NFLPA meeting, players only.
06:34Do you, one of the topics that we discussed, you know, the turf first grass debate, do you have?
06:41I wasn't in the meeting, I'd say the people that are in the meeting.
06:44Do you have an opinion on that in general, not even specifically about your stadium,
06:46but would you prefer games on, all games on grass?
06:50We're getting ready to play the Saints, so that's where my focus is.
06:56Can you imagine that Tracy's going to be up today, probably not to play this week.
07:00You only addressed two running backs last week.
07:02Just what went into that decision, and how, that little, what do you have one day,
07:06all the backup lines, how do you help it out?
07:09Yeah, I think we did what we thought we needed to do relative to the other areas of the team, too, special teams.
07:16You know, Tate was back there for us, returning, did a nice job for us.
07:19It's something we've been working on with him for a while, and I thought he did a really nice job with it.
07:22We'll see where we're at here this week.
07:24Those two guys have done a nice job for us in terms of scat and motor,
07:30and we just did what we thought we needed to do relative to the roster composition of the team
07:35and special teams and areas of that.
07:39Is Dante Miller somebody, like, if there is an open spot?
07:43He had a pretty good preseason, so fans are like, oh, he should get the chance.
07:48Is there a chance for him if there is a roster spot?
07:50Yeah, we'll talk about that throughout the week.
07:53You know, he did a good job for us.
07:55He does a good job for us on the look team.
07:57He got show team player of the week last week for his efforts and the things that he's been doing.
08:03So, again, those are conversations we'll have throughout the week, and we'll do what we think is best.
08:08What's the key to just trying to slow down a play like Lamar?
08:14All hands on deck.
08:17He can take it.
08:18He can cut one way and cut all the way back.
08:20He's such a skillful player and fast and has good vision.
08:25You need population of the ball.
08:26You need a good job of playing good up front and controlling the line of scrimmage
08:30and making sure we're gap sound.
08:32And even then, he can make plays that you're like, oh, man.
08:35And he's a tough cover out of the backfield, too.
08:38So he's been that way for a long time.
08:40Dynamic.
08:41They get him the ball.
08:42I would assume they're going to try to get him the ball a bunch.
08:44We're going to have our work cut out for us of playing good team defense on a player like that.
08:50And then, yeah, again, four first-round linemen.
08:54Center that's playing really well.
08:56So it'll be a good challenge for us.
08:58Two more.
08:59You had mentioned the other night about Burns and just how he left it all out there.
09:03Just in terms of where he is with his game, I mean, I know we talked this summer about being comfortable,
09:11being more comfortable, but what you're seeing from him, I mean, I know you have a lot of talent up front,
09:15but just in terms of what he's been able to do for this team, it seems to be exactly where you're going.
09:19Yeah, and he's done it since OTAs.
09:21The effort that he's displayed out at practice, the leadership, not just the vocal leadership,
09:27but how he goes about his business.
09:30You know, I'm not surprised with some of the things that he's done this year
09:33because he shows it out here every day, and he's done it since OTAs.
09:37He's had a really good camp.
09:39I just remember showing a bunch of clips with him over and over every day of this is the type of effort
09:44and the standard that we need to play with, and, you know, we're going to need to continue to get that from him.
09:49He gives everything he has every game he's out there.
09:51He's a talented player, and, again, we need him to be that way for us.
09:55I mean, different guys bring different things in that room, right, that, you know,
09:59you have the young talent in that duel.
10:01You mentioned Kayvon.
10:02Yeah.
10:02When you have a player, it's not to say that those guys aren't working,
10:05but when you have a guy like Burns where you could flip the tape on and say,
10:08this is how you work.
10:09I've got to imagine as a coaching staff, it's one of those.
10:12Be like this guy.
10:13Absolutely.
10:14When you have, you know, veteran leadership that play at a high level
10:17and compete and finish with effort and strain down in and down out,
10:22I mean, that's playing on special teams if you need them to play on special teams on a pump lot,
10:26whatever it may be, that's always good to have those veterans
10:29that display those qualities in all those rooms.
10:32You mentioned your relationship with Rattler.
10:36I'm just curious, or history.
10:38Yeah, just a trip out there at his high school.
10:41What about your history with the back-and-the-barfuck shop?
10:44Obviously, you did a lot with him this offseason.
10:46Yeah.
10:46I think he's a good player, has good athleticism.
10:50He has his own story and his own journey, but, you know,
10:53I had good visits with him leading up to the draft.
10:57I think very highly of him.
