00:00All right, let's go out and check out what's been going on around the league,
00:03specifically down in the boot after NFL preseason week one with three-time All-Pro selection
00:09and Saints special teams ace JT Gray.
00:13JT, thanks for hopping on with this, man.
00:15How you feeling, bro?
00:16Man, I appreciate you for having me, man.
00:18I'm feeling great, man.
00:19I can't complain about nothing, bro.
00:20All right, let's give our viewer a look into training camp.
00:24You guys wrapped up your game against the Chargers.
00:26You're still out there in Cali.
00:28But what's the preseason and training camp vibe been like for you
00:33and the squad this season so far?
00:36I feel like the vibe's been great, you know, going out, finding the identity
00:40and going out and, you know, building that team chemistry
00:43so we can play harder for one another and go out here and accomplish the goals
00:47that we've been, we have since day one.
00:49You talk about building that identity.
00:51You got first-year head coach Kellen Moore coaching you guys in his first year.
00:55Kind of what's he been like?
00:57What's the offense look like?
00:58And just what's he been preaching to you guys in terms of setting that culture?
01:04I mean, setting the culture, you know, just coming in, going, playing together,
01:08you know, coming together like as a family, having fun while doing it
01:12and having joy and just getting over those rough edges as a team.
01:15And, you know, like it's going to be challenges.
01:17And just overcoming those things together, that's going to make us
01:20and help us accomplish the goal that we've been trying to get to.
01:23One of the former leaders of your team, Honey Badger, Tyrone Matthew, retired this offseason.
01:31What's it like, I guess, being back there, being in that defensive backfield without him?
01:36And what did he mean to that team and the organization?
01:40He meant a lot.
01:41You know, it's a living legend.
01:43And it was a blessing to be in that room with him.
01:45And just to get all the knowledge that he had from the game and, you know,
01:49just everything that he's come through, come, done, overcame.
01:53You know, it's just amazing to see him and be around him in that room.
01:56And, you know, it was a blow for us.
01:58And I'm pretty sure that he's living his life right now.
02:02And I just hope many blessings to him and congrats on him on returning.
02:05Absolutely, man.
02:06He wore that number seven down at LSU.
02:09That was iconic, especially to see a safety return punts and do the things that he did.
02:13One of those dudes in Madden that I had to put on whatever team, you know,
02:17you start your franchise and you get to draft guys and put them on your team.
02:21The Honey Badger was definitely in my secondary.
02:24So congrats to him and whatever he's doing now, life after football.
02:28Let's talk some football, though, man.
02:30Your guy, Tyler Shuck, a lot of the rookie quarterbacks in this draft class
02:35had their first preseason action.
02:37A lot of those dudes look good.
02:39So first, kind of start with Tyler Shuck.
02:41How's he been impressing you guys?
02:43And are you surprised that these rookie quarterbacks were able to look,
02:47I guess, good in their first preseason play?
02:51I feel like Tyler, he's been poised in the pocket, you know.
02:55So, you know, he stays in there and he makes his reads tough in the pocket, able to run.
03:01Tall guy, prototype quarterback.
03:03He can be able to chuck the ball down the field.
03:06I feel like he has those great attributes and he can be able to build off those things.
03:09I feel like his first game was solid being in the league.
03:12Man, he's got a lot of room that he can improve in.
03:16And I feel great about it.
03:18Are you surprised that these quarterbacks kind of picked up the playbook
03:22and all of them were able to kind of look successful in their first games?
03:26You know, like usually when we think about the quarterback position,
03:29they struggle in that first preseason game.
03:31So not just Tyler, but just all those guys.
03:33Are you surprised that these young quarterbacks are coming in
03:36and being able to kind of put some good things on tape week one in the preseason?
03:42I feel like it all starts with the coaches.
03:44I feel like we got a great coach with us right now.
03:48And I feel like that's why Tyler has been picking up the playbook as fast as he can.
03:52It all starts with the coaching.
03:53And I feel like we have a great staff over here.
03:56All right, we got some joint practices coming up this week for the Giants and the Jets.
04:01They got two joint practices this week.
04:03You guys may have one against the Rams sometimes later this week.
04:08So I never went through one during my time in the league.
04:11So kind of give us the players' mindset on going through these practices.
04:15Do they get you guys, I guess, game ready?
04:19I feel like they do get us game ready going in and being able to compete throughout the week.
04:25I feel like guys love that more than just going against themselves.
04:28And it just changed the energy and the aspects of everything that's going on,
04:33building up to game day.
04:34You surprised we haven't seen as many fights in the joint practices this year
04:38as opposed to seasons past?
04:39Yeah, I'm pretty surprised because normally, you know,
04:45you see hate makers throwing left and right every day.
04:48All right, let's talk about special teams, man,
04:50because we know this is a very important part of the game.
04:55You can win or lose a game in this league through good or bad special teams play.
05:00You've managed to be one of the best teamers in the game the last three or so years.
05:04So how do bubble guys like myself when I played make the team on special teams
05:10with the kickoff and special teams rules kind of changing throughout the years?
05:16I would say stand out, listen to the coach, use your techniques,
05:20and most importantly, go out there and find the ball.
05:23But JT, man, I'm going to let you go on your players' day off, man.
05:27Appreciate you hopping on and talking some football with us, bro.
