25 October - National Afternoon Forecast presented by Greg Dewhurst
Transcript
00:00Hello, good afternoon, welcome to your latest Met Office forecast.
00:04We have high pressure sat to the west of us, low pressure to the east,
00:07and that means a cold northerly wind for many of us,
00:11temperatures below average for the time of year.
00:14As we move through the weekend, though, this weather system will start to move in
00:17and it will introduce some cloud and rain and push slowly southeastwards
00:20as we go through Sunday and eventually something a little bit more westerly
00:25through next week, meaning temperatures just recover a little bit.
00:28But overall, quite a chilly weekend out there.
00:31Plenty of sunshine, though, and we've had lots of sunshine so far today,
00:35and that will continue as we move through into the afternoon and evening time,
00:39but strong northerly wind bringing in frequent showers to northern Scotland,
00:44western parts down Northern Ireland, western England and Wales.
00:48Some of these showers could be heavy at times,
00:50perhaps even a little bit of sleet and snow over the tops of the mountains in Scotland,
00:54and gusts of wind around 30, 40 miles an hour, particularly in exposed spots.
00:59It will take the edge off the temperatures, but in that sunshine where it does stay dry,
01:03particularly across central and eastern areas in the shelter,
01:06it may not feel too bad, but on the face of it,
01:10temperature values 7 to 11 Celsius for many,
01:13perhaps 12 or 13 across some southern coast of England in the best of any shelter.
01:19But with that northerly wind, if we add on the feels like,
01:23we can see quite a chilly nip in the air out there, 4, 5, 6 Celsius in places.
01:28So you may need just an extra layer, particularly where those showers pass through.
01:32If you are heading for a coastal walk, it could be on the chilly side.
01:36Into this evening time, further heavy showers into northern parts of Scotland,
01:40a band of showery rain pushing slowly south,
01:42south-eastwards across England and central parts of Wales.
01:45But overnight, we'll see some clearing skies, particularly across central, eastern and northern parts of England,
01:51and where winds fall light inland.
01:53It will allow temperatures to dip away, but elsewhere showers continuing,
01:56staying gusty quite close to the North Sea coast too.
01:59It will turn quite chilly, temperatures 4 or 5 Celsius in towns and cities,
02:03close to freezing in the countryside, perhaps minus 2, minus 3 in sheltered spots
02:07across parts of Scotland, northern England too.
02:10So it does mean a chilly start first thing on Sunday,
02:13but plenty of autumnal sunshine.
02:15The clocks go back, so an extra hour in bed for most of us.
02:19But it is all changed.
02:20We've got a weather system moving in from the north-west.
02:23They're slowly slipping south-eastwards through the day.
02:25So increasing amounts of cloud, outbreaks of rain pushing south-east.
02:29Best of the driest weather holding on into the south-east until the afternoon.
02:33Behind it, some showers moving in,
02:35and temperatures generally a little disappointing.
02:37Once more, a lot of cloud around, outbreaks of rain, perhaps just a degree or so up
02:42compared to today, around 9 to 12 Celsius.
02:46But again, still rather breezy.
02:47The wind's coming in from the west-north-west, so a chilly direction.
02:51Into the evening time, we'll see that rain continuing to push south and eastward.
02:55Some heavier bursts in places.
02:57Showers following on behind.
02:58Again, one or two of the showers could be wintery over the tops of the mountains.
03:02To end Sunday, some clearer skies starting to move in across Northern Ireland,
03:07Northern England to end the day here.
03:09And next week, well, it remains unsettled.
03:12We'll see further spells of rain at times, perhaps some stronger winds too.
03:15But it will turn a little milder, particularly across parts of England and Wales.
03:20Temperatures rising to a little above average, particularly later on in the week.
