00:20Gino will be on the call for Touchdown Radio this Saturday night, Alabama and Auburn.
00:28And I remind you before we talk a little college football with Gino, the best place to get geared up this holiday season with Canes gear is Caneswear in Davie or online at caneswear.com.
00:43We were just talking in the last segment, Gino, about Carson Beck and what letter grade you'd give him or whether, because Crowder was saying he didn't meet expectations.
00:56But I reminded Crowder, his expectations for Carson Beck were the bottom of the barrel.
01:03He thought he was going to be a bust.
01:04And I think those big wins at the beginning of the season were a lot in part due to him.
01:10So I'm just curious how you look at Carson Beck's season with the University of Miami.
01:17Well, I would say good, not great.
01:19He played better this past week.
01:21I think that, you know, the two losses are really the disappointing ones.
01:27I mean, he threw four picks in the one game and didn't play well.
01:30But, you know, they got, listen, they got their work cut out for him.
01:35I mean, they got an outside chance getting in the playoff.
01:39Still, you know, probably more of a chance making the playoff than making the conference championship game.
01:43But for them to do that, they're going to have to go on the road and beat Pitt.
01:46And I just saw Pitt against Georgia Tech.
01:48Pitt has a true freshman quarterback and a true freshman in the backfield that are legit.
01:53Like, I'd be shocked if Pitt was able to keep Heinzel the quarterback for four years because somebody's going to be throwing some major cash his way.
02:02The kid can move.
02:03He's got a nice arm.
02:04He's aggressive.
02:05Seems to be, you know, a fiery leader on the field.
02:07But, you know, I would say okay.
02:11You know, he didn't have, obviously, a Cam Ward-type season.
02:15And, obviously, nobody has at the University of Miami.
02:19So, maybe unfair to compare that.
02:21But I think that the comparison is not necessarily just your statistics, but your record.
02:29And I think that that's really what, you know, is most important as a quarterback is what your record wins.
02:37And you lost a couple games where, you know, you were a pretty big favorite, you know, in those games.
02:44And you didn't have great games.
02:46So, you know, I'm not going to say it's a failure, but I think it was adequate.
02:51You know, we would have liked more out of it.
02:54And he can write it off if they go out and smoke Pitt this weekend.
02:59I think they got a darn good chance of getting in that playoff.
03:03And, Gino, do you like that approach with, like you're saying, Cam Ward?
03:07And Hawks, right, because I'm looking at Cam Ward and I'm almost like, listen, I watched him at Florida.
03:11I mean, Georgia.
03:13I watched, you know, I watched Beck at Georgia.
03:15I'm like, he's not Cam, if y'all are expecting that.
03:18But to your point, like I was saying, man, the two losses, the ball touched his hand last.
03:23And those top quarterbacks, that's what you want.
03:24You want to have the ball in your hands down by four to go win the game or in overtime for SMU where he's not doing that.
03:33So, I guess it's almost we're talking now about the strength of schedule versus strength of loss where I'm putting those losses over the Notre Dame,
03:41over the Florida game, over those games because when the game was on the line, you had the ball in your hand.
03:46It wasn't the defense having to stop them.
03:48Oh, yeah, I would agree.
03:49I think the one disappointing thing, you know, listen, as a player, you want to feel like, man, the guy's all in.
04:00And the most disappointing thing to me is, you know, listen, you can have crappy games.
04:06Listen, I've had crappy games and you just own up to it.
04:10But some of the responses, like I'm just running the plays sent in to me from the sideline, like I didn't really care for that kind of response.
04:18I mean, I don't want my quarterback telling me that.
04:21I want to tell my quarterback, here, I'm going to teach you this is what we want to run in these situations.
04:26And if, you know, 25 second clock's running down, you can get us in a better play.
04:31Get us in a better play.
04:32You're the leader out there.
04:33I'm the coach on the sideline.
04:35And I think those were probably the disappointing thing.
04:39I think the, you know, the play at SMU where they're trying to throw a little dodge route, you know, to Malachi and a linebacker, like you said, it really wasn't a tough interception.
04:49I mean, you know, it was kind of a floated ball over the middle.
04:53I mean, if you're going to try to jam one in there, I don't know, my experience, I throw the damn ball as hard as I can.
04:59I mean, if I'm trying to throw it by somebody, I'm trying to throw it by somebody.
05:02So, I think that he has gotten better.
05:07I think last week was one of his better performances.
05:10And listen, quarterbacks, the more reps they have in a certain scheme, the better they're going to be.
05:15So, hopefully, that continues.
05:18But, like I said, they're going to have their work cut out for him this weekend.
05:21But I think the question here, Gino, my opinion is, would you trust him in a must-win game in the college football playoff?
05:28I know right now the Canes seem to be on the outside looking in, but would you trust him to go make the play down the stretch of a game of the ACC title game
05:37or down the stretch of a game of a college football playoff game based on what you've seen this season?
05:42You got no other choice.
05:45I mean, you know what I mean?
05:47It's like, you know, I get the question like we ask, like, do you really want the ball in this guy's hands?
05:52And we've done it, whether it's the Dolphins, the Canes, the Seminoles, the Gators.
05:57You know what?
05:58Hell, you're at this point right now, and he's your guy.
06:02I mean, remember, let's go back to that Notre Dame game, and Notre Dame handcuffed C.J. Carr.
06:08Now, he was a redshirt freshman.
06:09I'm like, dude, if you pick your starter, I don't give a crap if it's the game one, game two, or game 11, or you're in the playoffs.
06:18He's your starting quarterback.
06:20So, you better believe him, else you're setting up your whole team or your whole offense to failure.
06:27So, I would say, yeah, they better have the utmost confidence in him going into these last games,
06:33and if they make the playoffs, they better have confidence that, you know,
06:37you're not going to game plan around your starting quarterback.
06:42God, I wouldn't hope at this point in the season.
06:45Speaking of the college football playoffs, there's obviously all, and again, it starts with the Canes beating Pitt on Saturday,
06:56and again, you broadcast Pitt last week, so you've seen them.
06:59This is not a cakewalk by any stretch of the imagination.
07:02We've seen this play out with the Canes before late in the, I believe it was a Thanksgiving
07:07or right after Thanksgiving game against Pitt just a few years ago that they put up a stinker.
07:13But, if it comes down to the college football playoffs, is there any scenario where you say
07:21Notre Dame should be in ahead of Miami if they both end with the same number of losses
07:27and Miami has beaten Notre Dame head-to-head?
07:31I would say yes because, listen, you have recency bias.
07:35If you're voting, you look at things that happen closer to your vote with more credence.
07:42Because, you know, Notre Dame smoked Syracuse 70-7.
07:46They played a lot of the same opponents.
07:50And you would, I would say the trajectory, Notre Dame has been playing better and better every week.
07:56And Miami has kind of been up and down, and you had those kind of two stinkers in the middle, latter part of the season.
08:03So, I would say yes.
08:04And the committee has already told you.
08:07I mean, look at how they're ranking Miami and Notre Dame.
08:10If you're truly looking at the same record, they're going to go, okay, let's look at the same opponents
08:16and how you did versus those same opponents.
08:19I mean, hell, you know, I can remember when I played in the BCS and all that, it was Florida and Spurrier running up the score.
08:26Erickson and Miami, they're running up the score.
08:28But that matters because now you've got people, the actual individuals where the computers are out of it,
08:34where somebody's saying, well, who do I think is really playing better right now?
08:39And I would say that, yes, there is a scenario.
08:43They've already showed you.
08:45I mean, they have the same records.
08:47But do you think, do you think that that's fair?
08:50Because I don't, I have a, I have this.
08:52Well, fair is what you go get blue ribbons at and, you know, they show cows and horses.
08:57I get it, I get it.
08:58There ain't nothing fair.
09:00But in other words, just to say, hey, this team is playing better now, discounts the game that you actually beat that team in.
09:10And why should that be discounted?
09:12Okay, let's go back to a couple years ago, Hawk.
09:15Florida State was undefeated.
09:17They should have been.
09:18And they said the quarterbacks hurt.
09:20And all of a sudden, they don't make the playoffs.
09:23And it's like, you screw 99 other players on that roster because the quarterback got hurt at the end of the season.
09:32Let's take another scenario.
09:34What if Ole Miss beats Mississippi State this weekend?
09:38And on Sunday, Lane Kiffin says, peace out, I'm going to Baton Rouge or I'm going to Gainesville.
09:44What does the committee do there?
09:47Who's going to call the offense?
09:49I mean, he's a big reason.
09:50I mean, I would say that's more even a reason to knock Ole Miss than how they did Florida State wrong a couple years ago.
10:01So, listen, yeah, life ain't fair, but this is why you can't leave it up to people and their judgment.
10:11And this is why, as you know, when I was in school, we weren't in a conference.
10:16And our only chance was to go undefeated.
10:19We didn't have the SEC label behind us.
10:22We didn't have that schedule.
10:24So, it was like we had to kick everybody's ass and basically say, you know what?
10:29You can't keep us out.
10:31And now Miami's not in that situation right now.
10:33They don't – if they worry about all this other stuff, they're going to forget about Pitt, which they can't.
10:40They can only control what they can control.
10:42And, unfortunately, they left a lot out there with those two losses.
10:47But, like I said, Pitt, man, Narduzzi's a defensive coach.
10:50I sat there and watched.
10:52He would line six, seven guys up on the line of scrimmage.
10:55He would only rush four.
10:57Georgia Tech's old line couldn't figure out who was coming.
11:00They dropped the linebacker on the coverage.
11:02Guy goes 100 yards with a pick.
11:04Like, basically kind of the same throw that Carson made earlier in the season.
11:09Miami's going to get a ton of that right now.
11:12Like, that dodge route that Malachi, Tony, they love throwing.
11:15Bro, there's going to be some blitzes.
11:18You're going to think it's blitz, and it's not.
11:20And it's like you have to be patient.
11:23And I would say how you take people out of blitz zone, you run the ball right down their throat.
11:29You just say, you know what?
11:30You can line up a line of scrimmage.
11:32I don't really care if you're rushing four.
11:33I don't care if you're rushing seven.
11:35We're going to run it straight at you and just pound you into oblivion.
11:40But, you know, that's kind of what I would say.
11:43Just, you know, it is what it is, and it's, you know, we've just got to wait until the committee.
11:51You know, there's a lot of things that can go their way and have to this point, really,
11:57have to this point because they still got a shot, even with those two losses later in the season.
12:01You bring up the committee, and it's humans and human error, almost like you're saying fair.
12:07It's whatever I think.
12:09Like, Hawk saw Carson Beckham love him.
12:11I saw Carson Beckham was like, no, he ain't worth a damn.
12:13It's just our opinions.
12:14But when it was a computer, everybody hated the BCS because computers don't know anything.
12:20They're just putting numbers together.
12:21Which way is the better way?
12:22I'd ask Hawk, too.
12:23Because humans make mistakes, but the computer's not smart enough to make that decision.
12:27So, now there's no way to get the right 12 in.
12:30Channing, we have to have jobs, and I like it whatever way because we've got to talk about something.
12:35You know what I mean?
12:36It's set up for us to discuss and debate.
12:41I mean, I'll throw a wrench in.
12:42What if Michigan goes out?
12:44Michigan hasn't lost to Ohio State in four straight years.
12:47What if they go out and beat Ohio State?
12:48Michigan and Miami are going to have the same record.
12:53That's going to be another team that jumps Miami.
12:57I mean, so it's like you can talk about all these scenarios of them trying to get an ACC championship game.
13:03That's where, okay, hopefully these other teams lose and we get in the conference championship game, win the conference.
13:08Then you're in.
13:09But, man, there's people that are ranked behind you that have big games that could jump you because, like you said,
13:17it's people saying, well, Michigan's playing better right now.
13:21Who's to say they are or they aren't?
13:23But people have to make a vote.
13:26They have to make a choice.
13:28And their recency bias, I mean, come on.
13:31We all know that.
13:32It's like, how great was the win in August?
13:34Yeah, it was great.
13:36Nobody remembers that win in August.
13:39People remember the wins in November.
13:41That's why when it's, you know, when it's, you know, cut in time, you've got to win in November.
13:47You've got to win your conference games.
13:49Somehow, I feel like everyone would remember the August game if Notre Dame won and they had the same schedule and this whole situation was reversed.
13:58I'm sure they, oh, you remember when Notre Dame beat Miami?
14:02I mean, argument ender.
14:03They're a better team.
14:06You know what, though?
14:07I would say play them again right now, and I would say probably.
14:11But I don't have to play them again.
14:12They played them already.
14:13Well, okay.
14:15They also had another opponent, which I told you about a long time ago in August, heat and humidity.
14:20They're big-ass offensive linemen.
14:22Oh, come on.
14:22We're not doing popsicles.
14:24We're not doing popsicles on the sidelines in the third quarter.
14:27Gina, what are we doing here?
14:28You're not doing weather.
14:30All I'm telling you is they were eating popsicles on the sidelines in the third quarter
14:34because they were whipped by the humidity.
14:37Come on.
14:37Channing's played down here.
14:38Like the Dolphins be like, play our top game.
14:40But that makes no sense.
14:42They played.
14:42Both teams faced the same stuff, and you're saying, hey, play them again now.
14:46But we don't have to play them again now.
14:48We already played them.
14:49Okay, so you have head-to-head, and then you also have same opponent.
14:54So then they're going to look at same opponents.
14:56But which one should matter more?
14:58Everyone's making the head-to-head, but I'm telling you, recency bias.
15:03I'm with you.
15:04I know it exists.
15:06Yeah.
15:06You've got to ask ChatGPT, in my opinion.
15:09That's the only person that can solve this.
15:12You know, that would be kind of interesting.
15:14Maybe some of the committee throws out the ChatGPT.
15:16Put Elon Musk on the committee.
15:18Who's on the committee right now?
15:20Is Condoleezza Rice still up there?
15:22Elon Musk is worried about counting his kids and wives and women
15:26and whatever he's counting.
15:28I mean, come on.
15:30Come on.
15:30You know what, it's frustrating because they have a very good team,
15:37and they stumbled twice, and they were in big-time games.
15:42And the ACC, let's be honest, they don't have a team where they're like,
15:48hey, man, this is Pitt.
15:50They're 11-0 at the end of the season,
15:52and they got Dan Marino handed off to Tony Dorsett.
15:54But that's where the ACC is missing this year because no matter what you say
16:02about the SEC, at the end of the year, hell, Alabama can still lose to Auburn.
16:07I mean, you know, it's the Iron Bowl.
16:09Crazy stuff happens in that game.
16:13But it is a game.
16:15It is like Michigan-Ohio State where even if Michigan stinks or isn't very good,
16:21people give credit to, you know, the opposing team of Ohio State and the SEC,
16:28and Miami does not have that game at the end on their schedule.
16:31That's why you can't let other people decide your fate.
16:35And that's the frustrating thing because I think they are playing better right now,
16:40and they had a great game last week.
16:41Like, listen, just go out and kick Pitt's ass on the road.
16:45Yeah, put up 70 on Pitt.
16:47Put up 70 on Pitt and make people think about that.
16:49That will be a factor.
16:52That will be a factor.
16:53And then all of a sudden, then it is, hey, you know what?
16:58Then the talk is they beat Notre Dame head-to-head.
17:01They had better wins at the end of the season,
17:03or just as good of a win at the end of the season.
17:07Gino Toretta, we can hear him usually on Thursdays.
17:11Are you opting out of Bird, by the way?
17:13Are you opting out of Bird?
17:14Yeah, well, we're actually going up to Tampa,
17:16so we're going to a restaurant.
17:17So there's Bird on the menu.
17:19I think Lori's going to have the turkey.
17:22I think I'm probably going to go with some sort of, like, hanger steak.
17:25Oh, hanger steak's good.
17:27Butcher's filet.
17:28Yeah, yeah.
17:29Poor man's poor man's filet.
17:30Are you having turkey?
17:31Hell, yeah.
17:32I'm putting it on my rotisserie.
17:35What about the lasagna?
17:37No.
17:38No lasagna, no za, or no.
17:41Spaghetti meatballs?
17:43No, but there's Italian sausage in my wife's stuffing,
17:48so there are some Italian meats.
17:50What else is in there?
17:51Gabagool?
17:53No gabagool, but it's pork.
17:55I mean, it's kind of the same thing.
17:57We actually bought, I'm going to try this one.
17:59I don't know if you've seen it at your favorite store, Trader Joe's.
18:03They had half turkeys, like, basically just ran down the saw,
18:06and it's all seasoned.
18:09So I'm going to take another half a turkey and throw it on my smoker
18:12and just kind of see how that plays out.
18:16But I can't go with that being the main one because I don't really know.
18:19Because you don't know.
18:20Yeah, I don't know kind of out-seasoned how it's going to turn out.
18:24I know how my bird, with two sticks of herb butter underneath the skin
18:29and the breast to keep it moist, I know that's going to be good,
18:33and I know the skin's going to be crispy from my rotisserie,
18:37so I know I'm good with that one.
18:39Keep a little gabagool in the fridge just in case things go south.
18:44I'll slice up some pancetta.
18:46There you go.
18:47Pancetta.

19:17and we will speak with you next week,
19:18and I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of stuff to talk about
19:22when it comes to college football and the Miami Hurricanes.
19:26So we'll talk to you in a week.
19:27Yes, sir.
19:27Happy Thanksgiving, everybody.
