00:00Hey, Titus, talk to us a little bit, man, about how comfortable you are out there on that edge, man,
00:06out there at right tackle.
00:07I know you've been a good soldier, man.
00:09You've done what everybody's asked you to do, and much respect and admiration for that, man.
00:14But I know you're comfortable out there at that right tackle spot.
00:17You're having you a solid year, man.
00:18How does it feel to be out there and be getting it done?
00:21I feel good.
00:23I'm back playing when I naturally play.
00:25So it gave me a chance to play more comfortably with a clear mind
00:29and knowing that I can go out there and compete with anybody who I'm facing against.
00:33So it feels good to be able to be in that position.
00:37Tell us about your teammates.
00:38Obviously, y'all have remade the line to a large degree.
00:41You're pretty much the one guy that was there last year in that position.
00:46Just talk about kind of down the line what you're seeing from new additions like,
00:51obviously Ed Ingram, Andrews, at center.
00:54Of course, Juice has kind of stepped up into that role at left guard,
00:57and you've got the rookie, Ariante Ursary, at left tackle.
01:00What are you seeing from your teammates along that line?
01:02I'm just seeing a group that's dedicated to getting better each week.
01:08As far as Ariante, I feel like each week he has gotten better as a player.
01:12So he's owning him on all the things he needs to work on.
01:16He's putting in the extra work every week to get better, and it's paying off for him.
01:20He's a smart kid, and the sky's the limit for him.
01:24Juice has stepped in and done a good job for us.
01:28I've always been a big fan of Juice since he came in because he was able to play center,
01:32and he could play guard.
01:34So his versatility is helping us out a lot.
01:36We're coming in and stepping up for him.
01:39You know, Jay's a great guy.
01:40He's from Bama.
01:41He grew up like an hour away from me.
01:43So I've kind of known him because he went to Chard,
01:46which is close to Alabama State in college.
01:50And Jay Tyler's been a smart, good football player.
01:53He's doing a good job of getting us to the right mic points
01:56and helping us be able to play faster because, you know,
02:00that's one of the things about O-line, being able to play fast
02:03and knowing where you go is probably most of the biggest part
02:06because a lot of guys can block.
02:08But if you don't know who you're going to, it makes you play slower,
02:10and that can fuck you up a lot.
02:11You know, so that can mess you up and stuff like that.
02:15But, you know, I love playing beside Ed Engel.
02:19You know, Ed's one of the best guards I've played beside.
02:24He's helped me a lot with my game, and, you know, I helped him a lot.
02:28And we're just building that camaraderie every day.
02:31And, you know, it's just been a joy to play beside him
02:34because he's having one of the best seasons of his career, and so am I.
02:37So, you know, we just got to keep the ball rolling
02:40and keep building that camaraderie every week to solidify that right side.
02:44Hey, Titus, one of the things that – before we get to the matchup this week,
02:48which is a big matchup, but one of the things that I've seen watching your film,
02:52y'all's film, in O-line plays, it seems like the last two weeks,
02:57it seems like there's been more of an emphasis on staying on your double teams,
03:01getting movement before going to the second level.
03:03It seems like there's been more emphasis put on driving your feet,
03:08and particularly in Dalton Schultz, and Dalton Schultz has put that on tape
03:11the last two weeks in a way that I don't remember.
03:14But the O-line overall, man, it just seems like y'all are getting a lot more.
03:19It would say that's accurate, and if so, what is the – what's that from?
03:25Yeah, that's just a mentality that we have – we've been establishing
03:29and start with our coach, man.
03:31The O-line coach, Coach Popper, has been telling us, you know,
03:33we just got to take care of the down guys first.
03:35If we take care of those guys, everything else will settle to play how it's supposed to go.
03:40But, you know, early on we were just rushing too long to get off to backers
03:44and stuff like that, and, you know, we would mess up blocks.
03:47But the longer we stay on the doubles, it was better for us.
03:50So we've seen the – we've seen the success that it's happened for us,
03:54and we've just got to continue to do that.
03:55Give us some insight into this matchup.
03:58Obviously, Seattle has, I think, formidable front is probably an understatement.
04:03They've been really, really good.
04:05Obviously, y'all have a big challenge ahead of you.
04:07Give us an idea for some of the coaching points
04:10and some of the emphasis for y'all going up against the Seattle front.
04:14Yeah, we're going up against the front that's hungry, man.
04:16They've been playing some good football.
04:18They play really good together.
04:20You know, it's not just one guy just making all the plays.
04:23Those guys over there, they play good, working together.
04:26There's a front that uses stunts and games more than any other team in the NFL.
04:32So that's a big challenge for us because that's something we struggled with in the past,
04:36but that's something we also have got better with each week.
04:40You know, they've got a lot of talented guys over there.
04:42They've got Zero, DeMarcus Lawrence.
04:44They've got 99, 91.
04:47You've got Byron Murphy, all those guys.
04:49You've got seven, 58.
04:50They've got a lot of guys that they can rotate in.
04:53They can play a lot of good football.
04:55But I feel like if we do what we're supposed to do up front
04:57and not try to do too much, we should be able to handle them.
05:04Titus, you touched on something right there that I think from a fan's perspective,
05:08you probably ran a couple of them off in the ditch, right?
05:11I mean, as fans, we watch and we're pulling like hell for you guys.
05:14And one thing that has seemed to kind of jump off the TV the last couple of years is there's been times
05:20when the protection issues had a lot to do with those games that were being played up front.
05:25The O-line was struggling, picking up them, that tackle DN, the TE stunts and things of that nature.
05:31So when you say, oh, these guys are as good as anybody, they do it as much as anybody,
05:34you know, from an offensive lineman's perspective, like what goes into why was it such a struggle before
05:41and what goes into getting that right?
05:44Because obviously I think y'all have been significantly better this year.
05:46But kind of talk us through that.
05:48Why was it a struggle and getting it right?
05:51I think the number one thing is with stunts and games as a player for me, from my perspective,
05:58is, you know, knowing the down and distance for one and knowing the situation.
06:04If you watch film and you know the situation, you get a tell of when they want to do stuff.
06:10So the first thing would be recognition, recognizing that, all right, when I get in second alone,
06:16got to, you know, get back on track, that this team likes to run games in this moment.
06:21So I got to recognize and be on the lookout for that too.
06:24And another thing is we just got to learn to play together.
06:27So, like, in the past, there was a whole bunch of, you know, one-on-one blocks
06:31and that doesn't work as an offensive lineman.
06:35Everybody got to be able to work together.
06:36And I think as a group, our coach has practiced that with us every single day of practice,
06:42working together, being on the same point.
06:45And when you're on the same level and can play together, it's easier to pick up.
06:49Tyson, let me ask you about the offense overall.
06:51It seems like y'all have been able to find something over the last couple of weeks.
06:54Obviously, I think the results speak for themselves.
06:57Is there – what can you say about you guys as an offense overall that y'all have been able to find,
07:02and especially coming off of this bye week, something that y'all are able to sort of cling to it,
07:07whether that's y'all's identity, something that y'all do well,
07:09or just something that has really worked for y'all over these last couple of weeks?
07:14Well, I think the thing that worked for us the best is that when we're able to start –
07:18we're able to start fast and have a good run game early in the game, everything else opens up.
07:23But if we're able to open up the lane for running back and get those guys going early,
07:29it makes everything easier for CJ to ask the game go on.
07:33So these past couple of weeks we've been running the ball really good,
07:37and, you know, the play action is working a lot for us,
07:40and it makes it easier to pass for check when we got a short distance to go on third down.
07:46Hey, a lot has been made, man, about the O-line room, and rightfully so.
07:51I love talking O-line.
07:51I'm an old quarterback, Titus, so I love talking O-line play.
07:54It's important to me, man.
07:55But I – a lot has been made about the overhaul of the offensive line,
07:59and I think a big question coming into this year was, hey, man, there's a void in leadership.
08:03Who's going to be that guy?
08:04Who's going to step up?
08:05What's that going to look like?
08:06And it sounds like when D'Amico's talking,
08:09and it sounds like when people aren't necessarily specifically asked about it,
08:12it seems like your name comes up.
08:15Can you speak to just a little bit about, hey, man, there's an opportunity.
08:19Is that a leadership role that you embrace that you want to go get and that you value?
08:24Kind of how did that happen, and what does that look like?
08:27Yeah, it's definitely something I value.
08:29You know, I've always been a guy, you know, growing up, high school, college,
08:34all that, was being the leader of my group.
08:36And when the opportunity presented itself this year for me, you know,
08:39I took it and ran with it.
08:41You know, I take value in, you know, talking and getting guys going
08:45and showing them the right way to do things.
08:48And so my job every day is to make sure I hold my group accountable,
08:52whether it's good and bad, you know, just keep them steady and float
08:55so we can just get better as a group.
08:57And I've kind of, you know, just embraced that
08:59and trying to rub it off on the whole offense.
09:01Okay, Titus, you mentioned accountability, man.
09:05Speaking of accountability, I've got to hold you accountable
09:08for holding Nick Chubb accountable, man.
09:11I saw something come across my timeline where you called Nick Chubb slipping, man.
09:16You called him lacking a little bit, had to ask his knees,
09:19you had to call him out for it.
09:20I don't know if that's leadership.
09:22Nick Chubb obviously is a known commodity in the NFL.
09:24I don't think he needs too much leadership.
09:26But it seemed like maybe he needed it in that moment.
09:29And so my question to you is, who is the ashyest member of the Houston Texans?
09:34Is it Nick Chubb?
09:35Is it somebody else?
09:36Is that the worst that you've seen?
09:37Like, how bad is it?
09:39And do we need to figure out some kind of moisturizing situation for this team?
09:44You know, I'm not going to, it's by far one of the worst I've seen.
09:48You know, and I had to let him know that.
09:51You know, I told him about me posting that he might get a sponsorship deal from a company
09:56where he gets some lotion or some coke.
10:00No, I mean, I always like making fun with Nick Chubb because he's a really good dude
10:05and I've kind of built a good relationship with him since he's been here.
10:10You know, I always tell him whenever he get that ball, look over to my side, you know,
10:13I'm going to open the lane up for you.
10:16So, you know, he's a good dude, though, man.
10:18I just like joking well.
10:20Hey, Titus, business minded, too.
10:21You saw that, man.
10:22You might get you a sponsorship, too, man.
10:23That's real leadership.
10:24I see you, man.
10:25Hey, Titus, the only two places you can get away with that, right in the locker room and at home.
10:29Anywhere else, man, it's going to be frowned upon.
10:31So, that is good.
10:33Oh, that is good.
10:34That was money when B. Scott showed that to me.
10:36Hey, Titus, look, man, I know you're busy.
10:38I know it's a big game, man.
10:40First of all, man, congrats on playing out there at that right tackle spot.
10:44Doing well.
10:44I know the work is not done, man, but I like seeing you out there, bro.
10:47And we greatly appreciate you giving us 15, 20 minutes of your time on such an important day.
10:53And, hey, you're always welcome on the drive on Sports Radio 16, man.
10:56We'd love to make a big man minute out of it now.
10:59Yes, sir.
11:00I appreciate you.
11:01Good luck, brother.
11:02Thank you all.
11:04All right, man.
11:04That's Titus Howard, Texans right tackle.
11:08I tell you, man, I love that he's played well, obviously, at right tackle.
11:12It's good to see.
11:14The most impressive thing to me about Titus Howard and kind of what – because you can hear it when he answered the question about leadership, too.
11:21There ain't no – there's no kind of soft shoe in it or being uncomfortable with it or – I mean, it's clear.
11:26I'm going to hold my group accountable and I embrace and value that leadership role.
11:29And there needed to be a leader in that room step up.
11:33There needed to be somebody hold people accountable.
11:35There needed to be somebody that when – you know, a guy – you have the ability – somebody's got to look at somebody.
11:42Yeah.
11:42Right?
11:43And to – for it to be Titus Howard, who's one of the guys that's a little longer in the tooth, especially now knowing Laken Tomlinson's not going to be a starter.
11:49Yeah.
11:50I think that's the biggest thing here with Titus Howard that's happened this year beyond just playing good right tackle is, boy, he seems to be the guy that stepped up.
11:56I mean, Clayton's been there since 2019.
11:58I mean, look, we remember when he got here, but all of a sudden now, that's been a while ago.
12:03You know, and he's also somebody, as you talked about, you asked him about this, has been somebody that they've asked a lot of.
12:09You know, moving around different spots, been a soldier, done pretty much everything that they asked him to do.
12:14And he's still kind of the last man standing, if you will.
12:18He's survived several regimes.
12:19And so it seemed like a natural progression in his role for him to be that leader.
12:23I'm just glad to see that he was willing to step up and take that on, right?
12:27Like he did not shy away from that moment because it did seem like just a natural step for him to be that guy.
