Dhaka (Bangladesh): A massive fire broke out on Saturday afternoon at the cargo terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, forcing authorities to suspend all flight operations temporarily as firefighting and rescue efforts continue.
The blaze began around 2:30 pm (local time) near Gate 8 of the Cargo Village, an area used for storing imported goods. Thick plumes of black smoke engulfed large parts of Dhaka, prompting a full-scale emergency response.
According to officials, over 30 firefighting units — including teams from the Fire Service, Civil Aviation Authority, Air Force, Navy, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) — were deployed to control the inferno. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed that all major emergency agencies are jointly working to contain the fire.
Flight operations at Dhaka’s main airport have been fully suspended, and several inbound flights diverted to Chattogram’s Shah Amanat International Airport and Sylhet’s Osmani International Airport. Authorities clarified that no aircraft were damaged in the incident.
As of now, no casualties or major injuries have been reported. Officials said the cause of the fire is under investigation, and normal flight services will resume once the area is declared safe.
