A shocking incident at Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, Delhi University, has triggered widespread outrage after a viral CCTV video showed a professor being slapped and assaulted by ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) members, including DUSU joint secretary Deepika Jha, inside the college principal’s office — even as Delhi Police personnel were present.
The confrontation occurred on October 16, 2025, during a disciplinary committee meeting convened to address a prior clash at a fresher’s event, where ABVP activists had allegedly attacked the student council president, affiliated with NSUI (National Students’ Union of India).
As discussions heated up, Deepika Jha suddenly stood up and slapped Professor Sujit Kumar, who serves at the same college. A female police officer immediately intervened, while another unidentified man was seen pushing the professor back into his chair. The entire incident was caught on CCTV and later circulated online, drawing widespread condemnation from the academic community.
Faculty members and teachers’ organizations have called the act a “direct assault on the dignity of educators”, demanding strict disciplinary and legal action against the culprits. Professor Kumar alleged that he was pressured by ABVP members to resign from his disciplinary committee post moments before being attacked.
In response, Deepika Jha admitted to slapping the professor, claiming he made “inappropriate remarks and threats.” She later issued a public apology, saying she acted “in distress” but stood by her account of being verbally provoked. Professor Kumar, however, denied all allegations of misconduct.
The Delhi Police confirmed receiving complaints from both sides and stated that CCTV footage was under examination. Meanwhile, the Delhi University administration has formed a six-member inquiry panel to investigate the matter, reaffirming that “violence of any kind against faculty will not be tolerated.”
The incident has deepened tensions between ABVP and NSUI factions on campus and reignited debates over campus safety, political aggression, and respect for educators within universities.
