Bicycling's Dan Chabanov talks about varying lumens.

00:00One thing I can't stop thinking about is how max lumens on bike lights is kind of a scam.
00:05And the reason it's a scam is because I've done the testing on this. So I've taken a bunch of
00:09lights in the lab. We used something called an integrated sphere to measure their output.
00:13Most bike lights will only hit their max lumen for somewhere between 90 seconds to five minutes.
00:20And then after that, they'll have a drop off. Some lights are better than others. Some lights
00:24only see a 10% drop off, but other lights will see like a 50% drop off from their claimed max
00:30output. And this is why I always recommend that like when you're buying bike lights, the thing to
00:35pay attention to is actually the second setting from the high. You'll get a lot more runtime and
00:40that is a sustainable lumen output for your light.
