00:00I don't want to spend our time this morning actually looking at all the false things, I want to look at what is truth.
00:06And above all, who is Jesus Christ? Yeshua HaMashiach.
00:11So we're going to look at a few passages in Scripture.
00:15We're going to start off with three readings from different parts of the Gospels.
00:20And I want you, as you listen to these readings, just to see that there is a connection between all of them.
00:27See if any of you can actually suss out what is the connection.
00:30Okay, first of all, Mark chapter 2, verses 3 to 12.
00:36Then they came to him, to Jesus, bringing a paralytic who was carried by four men.
00:40When they could not come near him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where he was.
00:45So when they broke them through, they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying.
00:50When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic,
00:53Son, your sins have forgiven you.
00:55And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts.
00:58Why does this man speak blasphemies like this?
01:01Who can forgive sins but God alone?
01:04But immediately, when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves,
01:10he said to them, Why do you reason about these things in your hearts?
01:13Which is easier to say to the paralytic, Your sins have forgiven you,
01:17or to say, Arise and take up your bed and walk?
01:21But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins,
01:24he said to the paralytic, I say to you, Arise, take up your bed and go to your house.
01:30Immediately he arose, took up his bed and went out in the presence of them all,
01:34so that all were amazed and glorified God, saying, We never saw anything like this.
01:40Reading number two, Matthew chapter 16.
01:42Jesus speaking now to the disciples.
01:49When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi,
01:52he asked the disciples, saying, Who do men say that I am?
01:56I, the Son of Man, am.
01:58So they said, Some said John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.
02:04He said to them, But who do you say that I am?
02:07Simon Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the living God.
02:11Jesus answered and said to him, Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah,
02:15for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
02:19And I say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church,
02:23and the gates of hell, or the gates of Hades, shall not prevail against it.
02:28I should say that the church is not built on Peter the man, it's on Peter's confession of faith.
02:32Jesus is the Messiah.
02:34And the third reading, at the trial of Jesus,
02:38Matthew 26, verse 62,
02:41And the high priest arose and said to him, Do you answer nothing?
02:45What is it that these men testify against you?
02:49But Jesus kept silent.
02:51And the high priest answered and said to him,
02:52I put you under oath by the living God.
02:55Tell us if you are the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God.
02:58Jesus said to him, It is as you said.
03:01Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man
03:04sitting at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven.
03:09Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, He has spoken blasphemy.
03:12What further need do we have of witnesses?
03:15Look how you have heard his blasphemy.
03:16What do you think?
03:18They answered and said, He is deserving of death.
03:20Okay, anybody spot, what's the connection between those three readings?
03:27Yeah?
03:27What's the question?
03:29What's the question they're asking?
03:32Who are you?
03:34All those questions, all those three readings are asking a question.
03:38Who is this man who's standing before us?
03:41Who does he think he is?
03:43Who is he really?
03:45And the answer has been given.
03:47The answer actually is, you are the Son of God.
03:51There is also that Jesus actually defines himself as the Son of Man.
03:55So you have two phrases there, Son of Man, Son of God.
03:59And they both apply to Jesus.
04:02And actually our understanding of who Jesus is,
04:06our understanding of the whole Christian faith,
04:08actually depends on our correct understanding of the answer to these questions.
04:13If we get this right, we understand Jesus as Son of Man and Son of God.
04:17Then we get it right.
04:18Everything else falls into place.
04:20If we get it wrong, everything else comes out of focus.
04:23And actually we end up with no salvation
04:25and no real understanding of who God is and who Jesus Christ is.
04:31So it's important that we get it right.
04:32So it's important that we get it right.
04:33So let's do that.
04:33So let's go.
04:34Let's go.
