“I was watching in the night visions,
And behold, One like the Son of Man,
Coming with the clouds of heaven!
He came to the Ancient of Days,
And they brought Him near before Him.
Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom,
That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion,
Which shall not pass away,
And His kingdom the one
Which shall not be destroyed.
Daniel 7:13-14

00:01Okay, the final one. Let's have a look at this one. The Son of Man is actually the fulfillment of prophecy,
00:07specifically the fulfillment of the prophecy of Daniel chapter 9, verse 13 to 14.
00:14Very interesting scripture. Someday perhaps we'll do a longer study on this particular passage and its application in the New Testament.
00:22But in the context of the scripture I'm just going to read to you, Daniel has been given a vision, a revelation of coming world empires.
00:32He's given empires as beasts rising up out of the sea, interpreted as coming empires from the time of Daniel, Babylon, Greece, Persia and Rome.
00:44All these empires are going to rise and oppress Israel. And then he sees a vision of the Lord seated in heaven.
00:49Then he sees the final one, the beast or the Antichrist being thrown into the lake of fire.
00:57Then we have the Son of Man prophecy.
01:00And in the case of, it's set against this, speaking about human kingdoms, human empires which are going to rise and fall away.
01:10Now he's talking about an empire which is going to rise and not fall away, which will be an eternal empire, the empire of the kingdom of our God.
01:19So let's read then Daniel chapter 9, chapter 7, verse 13.
01:25Daniel 7,
01:25So he sees one like the Son of Man.
01:49The Son of Man, the Son of Man again, the glorified man.
01:55Interesting, that passage in Ezekiel, if you read a few verses before it, you see that Ezekiel also sees a man in heaven, a glorified man in heaven.
02:02The same one, I would say, as Daniel sees here, the Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven.
02:11It says he's coming with the clouds of heaven.
02:15The clouds of heaven can be interpreted on two different levels.
02:19One is the Shekinah, the glory of God.
02:21The glory of God which has filled the temple in the dedication of the temple in Solomon's time.
02:28Which is the sign that the glory of God is present where this one is there.
02:34So the Shekinah only is a sign of the dwelling of God.
02:37When it appears on earth, it's the dwelling of God on earth with humans.
02:42So the Shekinah, the glory of God.
02:45When Jesus comes, he's coming with the glory of God, with all the power of God at his disposal.
02:50The cloud can also be the cloud of witnesses, which is the angelic hosts and also those who have been redeemed and are coming back with Jesus in glorified bodies.
03:01Redeemed of ages, coming with the Lord Jesus.
03:03He comes before the Ancient of Days, that's God.
03:08So he is God, but he comes bringing all this before God as he comes to the earth for the second time.
03:16And then he's given dominion that all nations should serve him.
03:20He says here it's a dominion which will not pass away.
03:24Kingdoms which Daniel has been looking at in the previous verses are all kingdoms which have passed away.
03:28There's no more Babylonian Empire, no more Greek Empire, no more Roman Empire.
03:34Come and they've gone.
03:35This kingdom is going to last forever.
03:39And only a kingdom which is built by God can last forever.
03:42All human kingdoms are going to pass away.
03:45British Empire has passed away.
03:47European Union will pass away.
03:50The kingdoms of this world will pass away and become the kingdom of our God and of his Christ, his Messiah, and he shall reign forever and ever.
03:56Only the kingdom of God can last forever.
03:59So only one who is head of the kingdom of God, who is the Son of Man, can be an eternal person.
04:06In other words, be God.
04:07Only God can have such a kingdom.
04:11And clearly the one who appears in this form is not a man in the human sense.
04:17He is the Son of Man.
04:19He's also the divine person who is Yeshua, Jesus the Messiah who came to earth and brought amongst us.
04:25He's crucified, risen from the dead, ascended to heaven, and is coming again in power and glory.
04:31And significantly Jesus quotes this particular verse from Daniel on two occasions in the New Testament.
04:39In Matthew 24, verse 20, when it says,
04:43The sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, then all the tribes of the earth will mourn and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
04:53In the context of Matthew 24, this comes at the end of the tribulation period.
04:58And it's the final thing which happens when Jesus returns in power and great glory.
05:03Son of Man coming in power and coming on the clouds of heaven, fulfilling the prophecy of Daniel, chapter 7, verse 13.
05:11And Jesus applies this particular prophecy to himself and says,
05:17I'm going to be the one who's going to do this.
05:19And you're going to see this happen.
05:21Not you, disciples, now, because you're going to be dead long before this happens.
05:24But you will be coming back with me because I'm coming with the saints.
05:28But you will see this happen sometime in the future at the time of my second coming.
05:33It's going to happen.
05:34Jesus is going to come again.
05:36We do believe that in this church.
05:37We believe that there will be a second coming of Jesus, which will happen literally as the first coming happened.
05:43And it will happen at some time in the future.
05:47I believe not in the not too distant future because we see all the signs of the second coming happening now.
05:53But we see that Jesus is going to appear and he's going to come on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
06:00Second time he says this is interesting.
06:03If you go to Matthew chapter 26, verse 65.
06:08In the context of the trial before the Sanhedrin,
06:11when the high priest is trying to find some detail by which he can have Jesus put to death.
06:17He has various false witnesses come before him and they give all kinds of contradictory things which Jesus doesn't even bother to answer.
06:24And Jesus is just standing there silent, not answering the false charges because they're not even worth considering.
06:32And the high priest then puts him under oath.
06:35And he says, I adjure you.
06:37I put you under oath by the living God.
06:39And he says those words he has to answer.
06:42He's saying, I'm now putting you in a position where you must answer this question.
06:46You can't just avoid it.
06:47I put you under oath by the living God.
06:52Tell us if you are the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God.
06:56And he uses the phrase there, the Son of God.
06:59Jesus said to him, it is as you said.
07:01Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power coming on the clouds of heaven.
07:09Then the high priest tore his clothes saying, he has spoken blasphemy.
07:12What further need do we have of witnesses?
07:15Look now, you've heard his blasphemy.
07:16Secondly, he is deserving of death.
07:20Can you see there?
07:20You've got the two phrases, Son of God and Son of Man.
07:23High priest says, are you the Son of God?
07:25Are you the Messiah?
07:27Jesus says, you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Father.
07:33So he's not saying the Son of Man is a different person from the Son of God.
07:35He's saying, yeah, I am the Son of God actually.
07:38But I'm giving you the title now which Daniel gave me, the Son of Man.
07:41And you're going to see me sitting at the right hand of the Father, of the power, coming on the clouds of heaven.
07:48So at some point in the future, this is going to place place.
07:53Again, those people weren't going to see it because they were long dead.
07:57Whether they see it in the Spirit after they've died and have a think, oh no, we got that wrong, I don't know.
08:02But he's saying here that this is going to happen.
08:05It's going to happen literally.
08:06You're going to see me coming on the clouds of heaven, sitting at the right hand of power.
08:12And the high priest then tears his clothes.
08:15He understands exactly what he's saying.
08:18Jesus is saying, I'm the one who Daniel spoke about.
08:21I'm the Son of Man.
08:23Now you see me in humility.
08:24You see me standing before you, your victim if you like.
08:28You're actually just about to put me on the cross.
08:30I'm going to suffer the most horrendous things.
08:32But all this time, I'm still the Son of God.
08:35I'm the Son of Man from heaven.
08:39So watch out what you're doing.
08:40They didn't, of course.
08:43But you're going to see this happen.
08:45And the high priest says he's spoken blasphemy.
08:47We don't need any more witnesses.
08:49He's condemned himself.
08:51He's described this prophecy of Daniel to himself.
08:54This prophecy of Daniel is clearly speaking about one who is equal with God.
09:00And it can't be this man standing before us.
09:03So it's blasphemy, so he's deserving of death.
09:06He gets the point.
09:07Jesus is not only claiming to be the Messiah, but also the Son of Man, who is clearly not
09:12an ordinary man, but God in some human, some visible human form.
09:18So he handed him over to Pontius Pilate.
09:22They actually didn't have the right to put him to death, so they had to put up another trial,
09:25another incident before Pontius Pilate.
09:27So he was inspiring against Rome and all that stuff.
09:30Because only the Romans could put him to death.
09:34And the Romans had to put him to death because they had to use the form of execution, which
09:38is crucifixion, which will fulfill another prophecy in the book of Psalms, chapter 22, which would
09:43describe exactly a crucifixion taking place with someone having his hands and his feet pierced,
09:50as happened with crucifixion, as happened to the Lord Jesus.
09:53So Jesus was going to fulfill all these prophecies, prophecy of Isaiah 53.
09:59And the rejection of Jesus, which was painful, which was also, in one sense, the devil rejecting God,
10:09but also was God actually overruling it in order that his word should be fulfilled
10:14and that Jesus should be the sacrifice for the sin of the world.
10:17Try and work that one out for yourselves.
10:19It's difficult, but it is true.
10:23It is also the victory, because by going to the cross, by taking the price of our sins,
10:31he was going to defeat sin and death and live forever, that we might also live forever
10:37and be saved through faith in Jesus the Messiah.
10:41And as I said last week, if he, the Messiah, if God was going to be put to death in the person
10:46of Jesus the Messiah, he would have to rise from the dead.
10:49The last words of Jesus on the cross, according to Luke's Gospel,
10:53was, Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.
10:56Then he gave up the ghost and died.
10:59In other words, his spirit left his body.
11:02The body was dead, the spirit was alive.
11:07A little bit of debate where the spirit went.
11:09But for three days, the body lay in the grave, and on the third day, the spirit came back
11:16into the body of Jesus, and he rose from the dead and appeared in bodily form to the disciples,
11:23to many people.
11:25Paul says actually to over 500 people at once at one point.
11:27So Jesus appeared in bodily form after his resurrection.
11:32He rose from the dead.
11:34And as it says in Corinthians,
11:37Messiah died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day.
11:42Fulfillment of Bible prophecy in order that we might be redeemed.
11:44And because of this, we can be saved.
11:49So if you look forward to this through, this verse from Daniel actually is crucial in understanding
11:53why Jesus went to the cross, and also why he rose from the dead,
11:58and why he will come again the second time.
12:00And above all, why Son of Man title is also a title for Son of God.
12:06Jesus is fully God, he's fully man.
12:08He's, as Son of God, Son of Man, he's deserving of both titles.
12:15Son of Man does highlight his humanity, also his humility.
12:21Reminds us of what he's left behind in order to become man, in order to redeem us,
12:25which tells us something about his love for you and me.
12:28God's love for you and me, and what you and I matter to God.
12:34Because if we didn't matter, then he'd just leave us.
12:38In the hands of the devil, and be lost for eternity.
12:42But because we do matter, because God so loved the world,
12:45he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
12:51So I hope you've all received him as saviour.
12:53If not, now is the day of salvation.
12:56Now is the day to be reconciled to God.
12:59Because Jesus is the only one who can do that.
13:01He is the sinless one.
13:03Humanity perfected.
13:05The one who came from God to reconcile God and man.
13:07To bring us into a relationship with the living God.
13:12And finally he says to us, Matthew 11, verse 28.
13:16Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
13:20Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart.
13:25And you will find rest for your souls.
13:28For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
13:30In his great love for us, he left the glories of heaven to become man.
13:36To suffer in our place, the wrath of God, against sin.
13:40To rise again from the dead.
13:42To ascend to heaven.
13:43And send us the Holy Spirit.
13:46That he might dwell within us while we're in this body.
13:49And prepare us for a life to be with him forever in glory.
13:52And he's coming again in power and great glory to prepare a place for us in his eternal kingdom.
13:59Praise the Lord.
14:00Let's just have a moment to be quiet.
14:01Maybe just one or two would like to even reflect on what I've said.
14:05And just give thanks to the Lord for what he's done for us in Jesus the Messiah.
14:09Amen.
14:09Amen.
14:22So Lord, will you praise you.
14:28We thank you, Lord, for your great love for us.
14:30We thank you that you have come to this earth to redeem us.
14:33Thank you for all that you went through in order to do that.
14:36We thank you that you suffered.
14:38Even you suffered by just being here on the earth as you left the glories of heaven to dwell in this sin-stained earth.
14:46We thank you, Lord, you suffered the indignity and the horror and the pain of the cross.
14:50You suffered the ultimate pain of having the sin of the world placed upon you.
14:57We thank you, dear Lord, you did all that for us.
14:59And we thank you that you rose again from the dead to give eternal life to all those that believe in you.
15:04We give you thanks and praise for your great love for us.
15:07In Jesus' name.
15:08Amen.
15:08Amen.
