Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven. But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching. Matthew 22:29-33

00:00Only God can have anything that's eternal. That's the message of this passage here.
00:04If he's going to come to earth, he's going to have power to do things which only God can do.
00:09You look at the count in the Gospels, what did Jesus do? He showed power over sickness,
00:14power over demons, power over death, power over nature.
00:20Do you and I have power over those things? No. Does any human have power over those things?
00:26Ever? There are certain times when Moses actually did show power over nature when he opened the Red Sea,
00:32but that was the power of God working through Moses.
00:35Only God himself can do those things.
00:39And if you read through the Gospels, you find that there are many examples of Jesus doing this.
00:42Let's just take one of them in Matthew chapter 14, verse 22.
00:49Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side,
00:53while he sent the multitudes away. When he sent the multitudes away, he went up to the mountain by himself to pray.
01:00And when evening came, he was alone, but the boat was now in the middle of the sea,
01:03tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
01:06Now in the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.
01:10When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying,
01:13It is a ghost. They cried out for fear.
01:16But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying,
01:18Be of good cheer, it is I, do not be afraid.
01:21But Peter answered and said,
01:23Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.
01:26So he said, come.
01:28When Jesus had come out of the boat and walked on the water to go to Jesus,
01:32but when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid,
01:35and began to sink, and he cried out, saying,
01:37Lord, save me.
01:38And immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him and said to him,
01:41O you of little faith, why did you doubt?
01:44When they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
01:46Then those who were in the boat came and worshipped him, saying,
01:48Truly, you are the Son of God.
01:50They saw just one of the demonstrations of Jesus' power and of his divinity.
01:57Can any of us walk on the water?
02:00No.
02:02Only Jesus can do it.
02:04Why? Because he made it.
02:06He made the sea. He made everything.
02:08He can walk on the water.
02:09He can still the storm.
02:10He can heal the sick.
02:11He can raise the dead.
02:12He can drive out demons.
02:13Why? Because he's the Son of God.
02:15Because he's God.
02:16He's equal with the Father.
02:17And the disciples recognize this.
02:19They say, Truly, you are the Son of God.
02:22Only Jesus can do this.
02:25He's also the Son of God because he gives unique teaching.
02:29Just to read some verses, this is the end of the Sermon on the Mount.
02:32You could read the whole of the Sermon on the Mount, but I haven't got time to do that.
02:35Just read the last few verses.
02:37Verse 24, chapter 7 of Matthew.
02:41Therefore, whoever hears these sayings of mine and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.
02:46And the rains descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
02:53But everyone who hears these sayings of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
02:59And the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, and it fell, and great was it full.
03:04Jesus is making a pretty strong claim for himself here.
03:08He's saying that if you build your life upon him, and you build your life upon his sayings,
03:13when the storms and the floods and the trials of life come and the temptations of life come, your house is going to stand.
03:20If you build it on rejecting him, when the trials of life come and the floods come and the temptations come,
03:26your house is going to fall, and it's going to fall down flat.
03:29He's making a statement there, which is showing that he is God, and he's able to keep you if you trust in him.
03:34If you don't, sorry, your house is going to fall down.
03:38And notice the response.
03:40So it was when Jesus had ended these sayings that the people were astonished at his teaching,
03:44for he taught them with authority and not as the scribes.
03:48When Jesus taught, he taught with authority because he was teaching the word that came directly from God.
03:54He was able to affirm what God said, also to confirm the things which are written in the Old Testament,
04:00and the things which were to be continued in the New Testament.
04:05Like when a teacher of the law came to him and said, what's the greatest commandment in the law?
04:09And Jesus said, you should love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your might, all your mind.
04:15This is the first and great commandment.
04:17Second is like it, you should love your neighbor and yourself.
04:20On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
04:23Thereby confirming the authority of the Old Testament and that he is in the same tradition,
04:29he is teaching you the same things, but now with a new angle on it,
04:32which is going to teach you how to extend this message to the whole world through the New Covenant,
04:37that we should love God, love our neighbor as ourself, the basic principles which come through the Bible.
04:43Okay, the final point which Josh McDowell made.
04:45If God was to become man and be put to death, we expect there to be something unique about his death,
04:52and also that he would not remain God, would not remain dead, sorry, would not remain dead.
04:59God cannot be dead.
05:02Whatever Nietzsche said, God is alive.
05:05God cannot be put to death.
05:08It always exists.
05:10Look at Matthew's account of the crucifixion.
05:12Matthew 27, verse 45.
05:16Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour, there was darkness over all the land.
05:19And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice saying,
05:22Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani, which is my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
05:28Some of those who stood there when they heard it said, this man is calling for Elijah.
05:33Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed and offered it to him to drink.
05:39The rest said, let him alone, let's see if Elijah will come to save him.
05:42And Jesus cried out with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.
05:46Then behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom,
05:49and the earth quaked and the rocks were split,
05:51and the graves were opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.
05:55And coming out of the graves after his resurrection,
05:58they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
06:01So when the centurion and those who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and the things which had happened,
06:05they feared greatly, saying, truly, this was the Son of God.
06:09Moment of the crucifixion.
06:12My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
06:14Jesus said that at the moment when the sin of the world was placed upon him,
06:18and for the only time in the whole of eternity,
06:20the fellowship between the Father and the Son was broken.
06:23As the Son of God, the sinless Son of God, became sin for you and me,
06:27that we might become the righteousness of God in him.
06:30That was the worst agony of the cross for Jesus,
06:32was actually bearing your sins and my sins,
06:34and being separated for a moment from the Father.
06:38That truly was hell, separation from God.
06:41And he experienced it just for a moment in time that we might be redeemed.
06:46And following that, you see a whole lot of phenomena which took place,
06:48the darkness, the earthquake,
06:50the veil of the temple being torn from top to bottom,
06:53symbolizing that now the way was open
06:55for any person to come into the presence of God,
06:58into the Holy of Holies,
06:59to have a relationship with the living God.
07:01And as the centurion saw these things happening,
07:06he said, truly this was the Son of God.
07:10So you can put the human body to death,
07:13but if you put the human body of God to death,
07:16what's going to happen?
07:19Well, we know what happened.
07:20They took the body down, they put it in a tomb,
07:22and on the third day he rose again from the dead.
07:26Actually, it had to happen because you can't put God to death.
07:29Jesus is God.
07:29He can't stay dead.
07:31You can put his physical body to death,
07:34which is what they did,
07:35but even in doing that,
07:36they're actually fulfilling the scriptures of the Messiah
07:38being the atoning sacrifice for the sin of the world.
07:42And we all know what happened on the third day.
07:45Luke chapter 24,
07:47verse 1,
07:47On the first day of the week, very early in the morning,
07:50they and certain other women with them came to the tomb,
07:53bringing the spices which they had prepared.
07:55But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
07:57Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
08:00And it happened as they were greatly perplexed about this,
08:03that behold, two men's to buy them in shining garments.
08:06Then as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth,
08:09they said to them,
08:09Why do you seek the living among the dead?
08:11He's not here, but he's risen.
08:14Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee,
08:16saying,
08:17The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men,
08:20be crucified,
08:21and on the third day rise again.
08:23Praise the Lord.
08:25Jesus is risen.
08:26He's not in the tomb.
08:28Stone was rolled away.
08:29He came out of the tomb,
08:31risen,
08:31and he's now ascended and glorified in heaven.
08:35Peer to the disciples,
08:37and in Luke 22, verse 44,
08:38he says,
08:39These are the words which I spoke to you
08:42while I was still with you,
08:44that all things must be fulfilled,
08:45which are written in the law of Moses
08:46and the prophets and the Psalms concerning me.
08:50Speaking there of the three divisions in the Hebrew Scriptures,
08:52the Tanakh,
08:52the Torah,
08:53the Navim,
08:53the Ketuvim,
08:54the writings of the Scriptures,
08:56all testified of Jesus.
08:58And he opened their understanding
09:00that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
09:01So he gave them a Bible study
09:04saying that I'm the Messiah,
09:06I've fulfilled all these prophecies.
09:08Wouldn't it have been great to be at that Bible study?
09:10But all we have to do is
09:12read what it says in the Scriptures
09:14and we can learn it ourselves.
09:18Then he said to them,
09:19Thus it was necessary for the Christ,
09:22the Messiah,
09:23to suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
09:25and that repentance and remission of sin
09:26should be preached in his name
09:28to all nations beginning at Jerusalem.
09:30You are witnesses of these things.
09:32Behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you,
09:34but tarry in the city of Jerusalem
09:36till you endued with power from on high.
09:40He's risen,
09:41he's ascended,
09:41he's glorified,
09:42and he tells the disciples to wait in Jerusalem
09:45until the day of Pentecost.
09:46On the day of Pentecost,
09:47they're going to receive the Holy Spirit
09:48and go out in the power of the Holy Spirit
09:50to preach this message.
09:52And as they preach this message,
09:533,000 people are saved
09:55and we have the beginning of the body
09:58which we call the Christian Church.
10:00Which exists today
10:02and you're part of it.
10:04And I'm part of it.
10:05And it's something which is worldwide.
10:07And it's a miracle
10:08that this message has spread
10:09all over the earth
10:10because of the power of the Holy Spirit.
10:13If you read Peter's speech
10:15on the day of Pentecost,
10:18he says,
10:19Amongst other things,
10:19men of Israel,
10:20hear these words,
10:21Jesus of Nazareth,
10:22a man attested by God to you
10:24by miracles, wonders, and signs
10:25which God did through him
10:26in your presence,
10:27as you yourselves know,
10:29him being delivered
10:30by the determined purpose
10:31and foreknowledge of God,
10:33you've taken by lawless hands,
10:34have crucified and put to death,
10:36whom God raised up,
10:37having loosed the pains of death
10:39because it was not possible
10:40that he should be held by it.
10:42Notice that phrase Peter uses there,
10:44it was not possible
10:45that he could be held by it.
10:46He couldn't be held by death.
10:48Not actually possible
10:49to put God to death.
10:51You could put the body of Jesus to death,
10:53but you couldn't keep him dead.
10:55He had to rise from the dead.
10:57And he goes on to say,
10:58This Jesus God has raised up
11:00of which we are all witnesses,
11:02therefore being exalted
11:03to the right hand of God,
11:04having received from the Father
11:05the promise of the Holy Spirit,
11:07he poured out this
11:08which you now see and hear.
11:10So the evidence
11:11is now the gift of the Holy Spirit,
11:13the preaching of the gospel,
11:14and the great multitude of people
11:16who came to faith
11:17in Jesus the Messiah.
11:19It proves that Jesus
11:20is the Son of God.
11:24And these four instances
11:25I've shown you today
11:26are enough evidence
11:27which you should have
11:28to understand
11:29the truth of the gospel,
11:31who Jesus is.
11:32He is the Son of God,
11:33born in a miraculous way,
11:36performing miracles,
11:38performing signs and wonders
11:39as he walked through the earth,
11:42healing the sick,
11:42raising the dead,
11:43walking on the water,
11:45doing all that,
11:46and teaching the things
11:47which no one else has taught
11:48concerning the kingdom of God.
11:50And when he's put to death,
11:51rising from the dead
11:52on the third day,
11:53and alive today.
11:56Praise the Lord.
11:57All these things are evidences
11:58of the truth of the scriptures.
12:00And no matter what people say,
12:01and people say all sorts of things,
12:02and they think they're being
12:03very clever,
12:04they have all sorts of arguments,
12:06they can argue
12:06to the rest of their lives
12:08if they like.
12:09But it won't do them any good.
12:12I'm afraid they'll have
12:12to carry on the argument
12:13in a lost eternity
12:14which will not be good.
12:16Those who accept Jesus,
12:19glory to God,
12:19will be with him forever.
12:20forever in a glorious new future
12:22with him in heaven.
12:25So to my mind,
12:26it's not even a sensible question,
12:31really.
12:31It's an obvious thing
12:33which you have to do.
12:35You must repent,
12:36believe the gospel,
12:36believe in Jesus,
12:37and receive eternal life
12:38because he is the son of God,
12:40he is the eternal one.
12:41One final scripture
12:42in the book of Romans,
12:44Paul summarizes this
12:46at the beginning of Romans.
12:47He says,
12:48Paul,
12:48a bondservant of Jesus Christ,
12:50called to be an apostle,
12:51separated from the gospel of God,
12:53which he promised before
12:55through his prophets
12:56in the Holy Scriptures
12:57concerning his son,
12:59Jesus Christ our Lord,
13:00who was born of the seed of David
13:01according to the flesh,
13:03and declared to be son of God
13:04with power according to
13:05the spirit of holiness
13:06by the resurrection of the dead.
13:09Through him we receive grace
13:10and apostleship
13:11for obedience to the faith
13:13among all nations
13:14for his name,
13:15among whom you also are called
13:17the called of Jesus Christ.
13:20So Paul sums it up.
13:21He's born of the seed of David
13:22according to the flesh.
13:24He's declared to be son of God
13:25with the power
13:27according to the spirit of holiness
13:28by the resurrection of the dead.
13:31That's the one
13:31who we have to believe in
13:32and believe in it.
13:34Believe in it for your salvation.
13:36He's the only one
13:37who can receive the sin barrier,
13:38remove the sin barrier
13:39which separates us from God.
13:42He's the only one
13:43who can deliver us
13:43from the power of the evil one
13:44who's in the world.
13:47He's the only one
13:47who can give us the promise
13:48of the resurrection
13:50and eternal life
13:51in his eternal kingdom.
13:53He's the only one
13:54who's able to defeat
13:54the powers of the antichrist
13:56which are rising up in our day.
13:58And he's the only one
13:59who can set up
13:59the kingdom of God
14:00when he returns
14:01at his second coming.
14:04He has the power
14:04to forgive our sins.
14:05He's the Lord.
14:07So believe on the Lord Jesus Christ
14:08and you shall be saved.
14:10Amen.
14:11Let's just have a word of prayer
14:12before we sing our final hymn.
14:14Father, we do thank you
14:15for the truth of your word.
14:17May each one of us
14:18understand these things
14:19which I've spoken of today.
14:21May we know you
14:21as Son of God,
14:23Son of Man,
14:24the unique
14:25one who has come
14:26to redeem us
14:27through your precious blood.
14:29You, the one
14:30who has now risen,
14:30ascended and glorified,
14:32seated at the right hand
14:33of the Father
14:33and coming again soon
14:35in power and great glory.
14:37Lord, we thank you for this.
14:38Help us to trust in you.
14:39In Jesus' name,
14:41Amen.
