The peak of hurricane season has already passed, but it's far from over.
Transcript
00:00Well, hurricane season here is certainly in prime time, and we still have a ways to go.
00:06Hurricane season doesn't officially end until after Thanksgiving at the end of November.
00:11But by month, again, August, September, and October are the three busiest months,
00:17and we're making it through the month of September with no U.S. landfalls for even a tropical storm,
00:21which is good news.
00:23It has happened before.
00:24It's happened even in the past decade, but it is kind of rare that we make it through
00:27September with no named storms during the month of September.
00:30So Imelda was named yesterday on the 28th of September.
00:34That was 12 days later than the average naming of the ninth named storm.
00:39And, again, we've had three hurricanes so far.
00:43The third hurricane of the year is typically named on September 7th.
00:46We're running behind there.
00:47So, again, as we've been dealing with, Umberto not named until long after September 7th in the past several days.
00:54And we do have one metric here on this board where we're ahead of average.
00:58Our third major hurricane doesn't typically form until October 28th.
01:02And we have had three major hurricanes so far this year.
01:04Umberto was a Category 5, and that was our third major hurricane of the season, still a 4 at this point.
01:11Looking ahead, we are watching, even though there's not much out there yet,
01:14at the end of the month into early October, small chance of development in the Bay of Campeche there,
01:19the southwestern part of the Gulf.
01:20Small chance of development there.
01:22It's not a whole lot of moisture there right now, but we need to keep an eye out for a weak disturbance there.
01:26And then off the coast of Africa, we have a tropical wave that will be organizing,
01:30and that one has a slightly better chance of organizing.
01:33But in the short term, the rain and wind that we're dealing with here in the Carolinas
01:37and, at times, some gusty little squalls near the east side of Florida,
01:41the short-term threat, it's a manageable threat out there.
01:43We've got to keep an eye out for the Gulf, though.
01:45The waters are very warm there, and we may still see some trouble.
01:48October, often a very busy time for the tropics.
