AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva details Imelda's movements.
Transcript
00:00Joining us right now is AccuWeather lead hurricane expert Alex DeSilva.
00:04And Alex, we talked about this on Friday, that there'd be a big tug-of-war going on.
00:10Well, I wouldn't say it's a tug-of-war. I think it's a landslide, and Umberto's going to be winning that.
00:15And part of the reason is because the distance between the two is what about, you were talking about 650 miles or so.
00:23Yeah, it certainly is. And, you know, the big question was going to be whether Imelda could outrun Umberto to the north,
00:28and that would be how we would get a U.S. landfall.
00:31The storm was a little bit slower, and so now we're going to really initiate the Fujiwara effect.
00:36Both players are on the dance floor now, and they're getting ready to do a little dance here starting tonight into tomorrow
00:43with Umberto to the east and Imelda to the west.
00:47They're going to start to rotate around one another, at least Imelda will.
00:51And then as Umberto moves to the north of Imelda, which it's starting to do now,
00:55then Imelda will be pulled underneath and from the southwest.
00:59And so that's why we're going to be seeing this hard right-hand turn coming over the next day or so.
01:04And then both storms will be heading out towards Bermuda.
01:08All right, let's take a look at the rest of Atlantic.
01:10As you know, September is the biggest month of the hurricane season,
01:14but we're going to go through this month without a landfalling storm in the United States.
01:19Yeah, very impressive.
01:21Of course, we will see some impacts from Imelda here, but not a direct landfall here.
01:27But, you know, looking across the basin, it does look pretty quiet other than our two systems off the southeast coast.
01:32But there are going to be a few things that we'll have to watch.
01:35But right now, look at the basin.
01:36It's full of sheer.
01:38You can see all this dark purple.
01:39So nothing immediate going to be developing here over the next couple of days.
01:44But we are watching two areas, one way in the west, Bay of Campeche area.
01:49The good news for the United States is that if this develops, it's moving south.
01:53So it will be heading towards Mexico, not towards the United States.
01:56And then the other area, way out in the Atlantic, it's still that time of the year where we still have to watch the tropical waves.
02:02Usually we have to wait until about mid-October or so, maybe a little bit later for that to really slow down.
02:07So we're still looking out towards Africa, and we have one at the beginning of October that we're going to have to watch.
02:13But it has to battle a lot of wind shear, I think, as it's going to be coming west.
02:17AccuWeather lead hurricane expert Alex DaSilva, thanks for joining us again here on AccuWeather Early.
