00:00please enjoy is something wrong oh no when you asked me if i wanted to have tea with you i
00:12didn't know you were being literal don't worry i'll get the tab huh
00:17nakajo's theory didn't pan out then nor haba's right neither did sawakiguchi's
00:28no i don't believe hers did i see i'm sorry to disappoint you don't have to be nice about it
00:37i'm incredibly curious what was so wrong about their theories
00:44well first let's talk about nakajo's hypothesis
00:58้กใใใใใใฎใฏ็
งใใใใใฎ่ฃ่ฟใ
01:06I love you.
01:36The sun's dark, I've seen the sun's dark,
01:42I've seen the sun's dark,
01:44I've seen the sun's dark,
01:49I'm still far from far away.
01:55I want to know the beauty of the reason I'm sure
02:01You see, that's why Sawakiguchi's theory doesn't hold up to scrutiny either.
02:27Indeed.
02:27Which member of your group turned down Nakajou's idea then?
02:34That'd be me.
02:35As well as Haba and Sawakiguchi's ideas?
02:38Yeah, that's right.
02:39When I first approached you about this, you told me I shouldn't expect too much from you.
02:43I guess our standards of expectation differ.
02:46Because you proceeded to disprove the theories our detectives put forth.
02:49But to be honest, that was my expectation.
02:52You knew I'd disprove them?
02:53I never thought they'd be up to the challenge.
02:55I was right. None of them possesses the level of deductive reasoning skills necessary to tackle something like this.
03:01You mean the whole detective thing was a roof?
03:03Of course. I'm not calling them incompetent. They have their own strengths, to be sure.
03:07But that doesn't make them useful to me in a situation like this, and I had to interest you somehow.
03:12Why not just...
03:12If it weren't for you...
03:13If it weren't for you, we would have gone with one of their ideas, and the whole production would have ended in failure.
03:19And I refuse to have my name attached to anything that isn't a success.
03:22Man, that's pretty cold. You're heartless, aren't you?
03:27If I must be cruel in order to get the best product, so be it. I will do whatever it takes.
03:32I had heard from three different people that only you could fix this.
03:36Erochitanda said it, as well as someone from outside our school.
03:40Masashi Togaito championed your prowess, too.
03:42When I learned of your reputation, I was convinced you had to be our detective and save our film.
03:47There was no doubt in my mind. I was after you from the very beginning, not the classic lit club.
03:55So, Oroki, after carefully weighing all the rumors about you against your own assessment of the detective's theories, I have decided.
04:03It's all true. You are special.
04:05You're gifted. A true genius.
04:18So I'll ask again, will you help us? Say yes.
04:22You are the only person who can save our class project.
04:25I couldn't bear it if all that hard work went to waste.
04:27I'm really not a genius. I just get lucky from time to time.
04:34That's a real shame.
04:36Let me tell you a little story. It might change your perspective a bit.
04:40Once there was a sports team with a benchwarmer.
04:44The benchwarmer did her very best to get herself off the bench and onto the field, but all her efforts were in vain.
04:51Try as she might, her hard work was no match for the athletic ability of the other team members.
04:55There was one player in particular whose natural talent was undeniable.
05:00Compared to our benchwarmer, the difference was like night and day.
05:04At one match, the talented girl performed exceptionally well, even for her, and was named the MVP.
05:10Interviewers flocked to her, hungry for a quote.
05:13One said, you're amazing, we're dying to know your secrets.
05:16She answered humbly,
05:18Secrets? Oh no, I just got lucky.
05:21I believe the poor benchwarmer took great offense upon hearing such an inconsiderate remark.
05:28Do you?
05:32It's not wrong to acknowledge who you really are.
05:35If you don't, you make fools out of those who praise you.
05:39Is she right?
05:43Am I special?
05:45Do I deny myself credit for being who I am?
05:49If so, then why?
05:51Do I think it's wrong to believe in my talent?
05:53All right, Iriso.
06:08My answer?
06:10You're going to school of your own accord during summer vacation?
06:14Are pigs flying?
06:16Do you have to?
06:17No, but am I not allowed to go to school if I want to?
06:20You are?
06:21It's just not like you, that's all.
06:24I'm fulfilling a personal request from Iriso.
06:26I'm going to solve the murder in Class 2F's film.
06:29What?
06:29No way.
06:30Who are you?
06:31I am Hotoro Oroki, the hardworking teenage detective.
06:34Did you say hardworking?
06:36This is spooky.
06:38Seriously, I never thought I would see the day.
06:41Are you doing this because of Chitanda again?
06:43No.
06:44Then what's your motivation?
06:45If I don't have to, I'm not going to, remember?
06:48That is your motto, am I correct?
06:50Satoshi.
06:55Hmm?
06:57Uh...
06:57Please be honest.
07:02Do you believe that there's anything which only you can do?
07:05Hmm.
07:07No way.
07:09Really?
07:10Don't you remember?
07:11I don't have any special talents.
07:14Here, check it out.
07:15I think of myself as a Sherlockian.
07:17But I know, deep down, that I couldn't really be one.
07:20I don't have the kind of ironclad constitution that could handle diving headlong into the murky depths of obscure knowledge.
07:26I'm nothing but an imposter.
07:28If Mayaka suddenly took a serious interest in Sherlock Holmes, I guarantee this.
07:33She'd surpass me in three months flat.
07:35I'm a jack of all trades, but a master of none.
07:39I'm a serious dabbler, that's all.
07:41I get my passport stamped and I go on my way.
07:43I'm an expert at nothing, but that's all right.
07:47But I get it.
07:48Irisu roped you into this somehow.
07:51Even so, you still doubt your aptitude.
07:54Which is normal, I suppose.
07:56Don't you have any doubts about yourself?
07:58Even a little?
07:59I don't.
08:00I know I'm average.
08:02Let's go.
08:03Mayaka is probably at school already.
08:05I want to say hi.
08:06Satoshi.
08:07Hmm?
08:08What I think may not matter one way or the other, but in my opinion, you're way better than just average.
08:13If you wanted to be a Sherlockian someday, I believe that you would be one of the finest Japan had to offer.
08:23There are about a million things I'd rather aspire to than being a Sherlockian.
08:27Though I've got to admit, I couldn't envy you more.
08:33Just so you know.
08:40What?
08:41It's summer vacation and Oroki still came to school of his own accord!
08:45You got a problem with that?
08:46It's creepy.
08:47I'm sure it foretells some kind of apocalyptic disaster.
08:51Look, I decided to help solve the mystery.
08:54Seriously?
08:54How come?
08:57I bet Edie Sue seduced you into it somehow, didn't she?
09:01You nailed it sharp as a tack.
09:04Whatever.
09:06Enough about me.
09:07What happened after you left yesterday?
09:08You mean with Chi?
09:09Well, I know she made it home all right.
09:12But when I called her this morning, she was in bed with a hangover.
09:15That's funny.
09:16And all from those chocolates.
09:18Ahem.
09:19Well, anyway, I think it would help if we watched the movie again.
09:27Kaito!
09:33There's blood everywhere!
09:34Oh, no!
09:39What is that?
09:43Wow.
09:44Kaito's severed arm looks so lifelike in that shot.
09:46I'd swear that it was real.
09:48I think the prop team is the most talented part of this entire production.
09:52It sure doesn't seem like a very complicated setup from my perspective.
10:02That's true.
10:03They did an excellent job of making it look simple, huh?
10:05No, they didn't.
10:06Huh?
10:07The reason the setting looks so simple doesn't have anything to do with the filmmakers at all.
10:11What, then?
10:13Here's my assessment.
10:14Anything good in this film is a complete accident.
10:17They don't know what they're doing, so the mystery ends up falling flat.
10:20Damn.
10:22These students from Class 2F have decided to participate in the Kanye side.
10:25You're right.
10:26The first time I saw it, I assumed at this point it was a regular documentary, not a murder mystery.
10:32The production values are extremely weak overall.
10:35Like which part?
10:36The camera worked for starters.
10:38Yeah, I agree.
10:39Okay, how would you shoot it, Ibarra?
10:42Well, I'm glad you asked.
10:43This is pretty tough going.
10:45Let's see.
10:45Where was it?
10:47Hold on.
10:48Right here.
10:49It's so dusty.
10:50Wouldn't it be better to use a wide shot here?
10:53Just to give some perspective on the size of the room and how small the characters are in it?
10:57Good point.
10:58And also, this part.
11:00Hey!
11:01Sugimura!
11:02What did you find up there?
11:03Well, it's pretty clean, mostly.
11:05The rooms in this wing might be-
11:07I think it would be smarter to shoot from Sugimura's perspective so the audience could see that the lobby's in full view from up there.
11:13If the viewers only see him from down there, there's no way they would be able to tell that.
11:18Okay, what else is there?
11:20You know, how about we not?
11:23What? How come?
11:24You'll never stop.
11:26Plus, criticizing the camera work won't solve the mystery.
11:29Now, now.
11:30There might be some value in criticism.
11:33There you are!
11:34Finally!
11:35So this is where you've been hiding.
11:39Yamauchi!
11:40How's it going?
11:41Whoa!
11:41Hey, man.
11:42No need to resort to violence.
11:43It's for your own good.
11:44You should be thanking me.
11:46Come on!
11:46I've got a ton of other things to do today.
11:49Dummy!
11:49Omichi's gonna shred you.
11:50Don't you even care if you fail the class?
11:54Go with him.
11:55You do need those remedial lessons.
11:57No!
11:57Solving Hongo's mystery is just as important as math.
12:00Come on, Hotaro.
12:01Just pull the answer out of thin air.
12:03What are you even talking about, you moron?
12:05Oh, it's fascinating.
12:07Come on.
12:08No!
12:08Let me stay!
12:09I have to know the answer!
12:11The answer!
12:13He put up a good fight.
12:14What is wrong with that boy?
12:17He's not giving up.
12:18I'm sorry, my friends.
12:20I'm a slave to circumstances beyond my control.
12:23Though it's come to this.
12:25Think of his notebook as me.
12:26And I should be with you.
12:27Stand up!
12:28Let's go!
12:29Okay, I'm coming.
12:31Don't drag me!
12:32Ridiculous.
12:33Well then, I guess I'd better go too.
12:35Really?
12:37Don't give me that look.
12:38Helping Irusu is one thing, but I'm making no sacrifices for the likes of you.
12:43Oh yeah?
12:44Such attitude.
12:45I have library duty today.
12:47If you'd told me before I could have cancelled it, it's your own fault for springing this on us.
12:53That said, I'm sorry.
12:56I mean it.
13:06Okay.
13:08Let's split up and explore the building.
13:10Hey!
13:11Damn it!
13:12He's dead!
13:14There's blood everywhere!
13:15There has to be a set of keys lying around this place somewhere.
13:19I've got it.
13:42So that's it. That's what she intended.
13:58Come in.
14:05First I have to know. Did you figure it out?
14:10Okay. Then let me hear it.
14:12Right. It goes without saying that the locked room is key here, no pun intended.
14:18At the time he died, I mean, at the point in which he was murdered in the movie,
14:23none of the others could have entered or left that room without being noticed.
14:26There's nothing to be nervous about here.
14:30The stage left wing was also locked.
14:32Damn it! He's dead!
14:36The window, which is the only other way out, is difficult to open.
14:39That means it's not possible for the killer to have come or gone by anyway except the door.
14:44So how'd they get in the room?
14:47I can't tell from the video if there's some rig built into the door that springs the lock,
14:52so it's safe to assume that the killer used the master key to let themselves in.
14:56However, Sugimura was able to see the lobby.
14:59Because of Sugimura, no one could have entered the stage right hallway, which creates a second locked room.
15:05They couldn't have gotten the master key from out of the office and gone down that hall without going through the lobby.
15:11He'd spot them.
15:12So what possible explanations does that leave?
15:15If none of the six could have done it without being seen, there's just one answer.
15:19A seventh character must have committed the murder.
15:23Interesting. Sabakiguchi said that.
15:25Yes. When she first brought it up to us, I thought it was ridiculous and I wrote it off completely.
15:31It didn't seem like a viable option.
15:32But then she said that Hongo was trying to cast a seventh character.
15:36Remembering that piece is what ultimately convinced me.
15:39But Hongo had written the rest of the film's script to be pretty straightforward.
15:43It seemed unlikely that she'd introduce a new character at that point.
15:47However, we noticed a few odd occurrences at other points in the film.
15:51Sato, she pointed them out for me in his notes.
15:53Kono-su finds the floor plan.
15:57It seems illuminated.
15:58I think it's lit by a flashlight.
16:01I saw it again, in the part where they go looking for Kaito.
16:04The hall is pitch black.
16:06Can't see a thing.
16:07Suddenly, a flashlight again.
16:09What's weird about a flashlight?
16:11Nothing.
16:11Except that none of the six kids has ever seen holding one at any other point in the whole movie.
16:15If you look closely at the scene where they discover Kaito's body,
16:19immediately after the illumination in the hallway,
16:21you can clearly see that no one has a flashlight.
16:24There was enough time for them to have hidden it, but why would they do that?
16:27There's no good reason to.
16:29I know, I know.
16:30You assumed it's scene lighting, but hold that thought.
16:33Just keep everything I said about the flashlight in mind for later.
16:36There's something else.
16:38And don't get offended.
16:38No, it's coming from a true film buff.
16:41She complains that the movie is boring, and it's poorly produced.
16:45The camera work in particular lacked any innovation or skill.
16:48But what if that was intentional?
16:50A clue for the viewers?
16:52How was it shot?
16:53The camera appears to be in the same place as the other six for the whole movie.
16:57Well then, it seems like you've figured it out.
17:01I think I have.
17:02Do you mean...
17:03That the cameraman is the seventh character and the killer?
17:08Mm-hmm.
17:09There were seven characters from the beginning of the film.
17:12The six that you see on screen the entire time,
17:14and the person behind the camera shooting.
17:17That makes seven.
17:18Now watch closely.
17:19In some of the scenes, the actors seem to be aware of the camera.
17:22They pay subtle attention to him.
17:24They look at him occasionally, though not very much.
17:27Calling him the cameraman is confusing.
17:30Let's rename him the seventh man.
17:32Now remember the flashlight.
17:34It wouldn't be odd for him to be carrying one if it's his job to chronicle the experience.
17:38The poor quality of the camera work,
17:39and the fact that none of the scenes were shot from multiple angles makes sense.
17:43If the guy behind the camera is a character in the story, that's expected.
17:47Also, and this part is really important,
17:49when the characters split up to look around,
17:51the camera stayed in the lobby after all six of the others had left.
17:55There's that weird empty moment, and the scene fades out.
17:58So check it out.
17:59After the others were gone, the seventh man stopped filming for a few minutes,
18:03left, came back, started rolling, and waited for them.
18:06And so, it was a really simple crime.
18:08The seventh man made sure they were gone,
18:10stopped his camera, and ran to the office to get the master key.
18:13Then, while the others were busy elsewhere, he found Kaito and killed him.
18:16After he committed the murder, he used the master key to lock the room behind him.
18:21Then, he returned quickly to the lobby and waited for the others.
18:27That is the conclusion I drew.
18:29If Hongo hadn't already cast a seventh actor,
18:32then I suggest you try to find one as soon as possible.
18:36Two questions.
18:38First, if your theory is true,
18:39the fact that no one ever talks to the seventh man or acknowledges him much
18:42seems a little awkward, doesn't it?
18:44Maybe Hongo was using that as a way to establish a motive.
18:48The seventh man could be an outcast,
18:50someone that others usually ignore.
18:52As a result, he never felt confident speaking up when they were around,
18:55hence his silence.
18:56Next question.
18:57If your hypothesis is correct,
18:59wouldn't the other characters figure it out eventually,
19:01the same as you did?
19:03They would all suspect the seventh man,
19:04because he'd stayed in the lobby.
19:06Also, the second locked room part of your theory is still intact.
19:09His exit from the lobby and his return after the murder
19:12would have been in public view the whole time.
19:14In which case, everyone would know who the murderer was immediately.
19:18Hmph.
19:19I don't mean to be rude when I say this, but...
19:22What does it matter?
19:24Like, who cares?
19:24It's not important whether the characters know who the killer is or not.
19:29As long as the audience is intrigued by the mystery,
19:31don't you think that's the point here?
19:33That may be the reason the film doesn't have a detective character in the first place.
19:37The movie doesn't deal with the people in the story figuring it out.
19:40They know who among them would be the killer.
19:42The movie doesn't have a detective character in the first place.
20:12Now we can resume our production.
20:16I guess my assumption about you has proven correct after all.
20:24You do have formidable skill.
20:26A power no one else possesses.
20:28Uh, thank you. That's nice to hear.
20:31I'm very flattered.
20:33I mean it.
20:34So what do you think the title of our film should be?
20:37Oh, the title?
20:38Off the top of your head.
20:39I'm sure everyone will approve, and I know I would like anything you dream up.
20:44Huh.
20:46Well, let me think.
20:48In light of the culprit,
20:50how do you feel about a blind spot to all?
20:56That's a good idea.
20:58I think it's the one.
20:59Home run.
21:14Good morning.
21:15Good morning.
21:16All the third years, please listen up.
21:19It's October.
21:19Time for everyone's favorite, the cultural festival.
21:22It's strange.
21:35How could anyone have gotten into that room without us seeing?
21:38I don't know, but I think there's one person who could have.
21:42Did you murder Kaito?
21:43You did it, didn't you?
21:45Murder her!
21:47Didn't mean for this.
21:48Turned out great, huh?
21:49Come back!
21:51You can't run away to the castle!
21:54He pulled it off, didn't he?
21:56Man, I gotta tell you, I was amazed by that surprise ending.
21:59It's the real life Kaito.
22:00Yeah, me too.
22:01Hey, you're the guy!
22:03Everybody's saying you're the mastermind behind the whole thing.
22:06Yeah, sure.
22:07Man, that ending was genius, kid!
22:10Sure surprised me!
22:12Hey, it's the great detective!
22:14Great detective?
22:16Yeah, good work!
22:17Though I have to say it's sad that when the seventh character is revealed to be the killer,
22:21the others turn violent too.
22:22They should have just turned him in.
22:24Yeah.
22:25Well, anyway, thanks for everything.
22:27See ya!
22:28Cool.
22:30Listen, Nakajou.
22:32What's up?
22:32Your pit stains are out of control.
22:34That arm is worth all the girlfriend way to it.
22:36I guess Haba wasn't satisfied with the ending.
22:40Hotarou!
22:41Huh?
22:42We saw the film.
22:43What did you think?
22:44Hmm, it's pretty good.
22:46It was very interesting.
22:48Who would have pinned it on the cameraman?
22:50The other day when we met, had you already figured it all out?
22:53No, at that point I hadn't quite come up with it yet.
22:55Really?
22:57Weird.
22:58She doesn't seem surprised at all.
22:59Then again, it is Mayaka.
23:01What'd I expect?
23:02Hey, Oreki!
23:03Hmm?
23:04Yeah?
23:04Listen...
23:07Hmm?
23:08I thought...
23:10I'll tell you later!
23:14Well, you did a great job as usual, my friend.
23:17And as for the Empress, she's happy.

23:30What's that?
23:31What are you doing?
23:33Now you're solely responsible for that ending, aren't you?
23:36That's right.
23:37All of it?
23:38Mostly.
23:40Then how do you account for what Haba said when we met with the detectives?
