00:00This is the story of the murder mystery.
00:02You're still an expert.
00:04Each of these three has their own theory about how the murder mystery is supposed to play out in the finished script.
00:09I'd appreciate it if you'd listen to what they have to say and then tell me what you think.
00:14Sure!
00:15So what's the deal? You guys are mystery experts or something?
00:18This is Junya Nakacho. He's our assistant director.
00:21And that's Tomohiro Haba, the props master.
00:24Nice to meet you.
00:26Finally, we have...
00:27Chow chow!
00:28Misaki Sawakiguchi, PR rep.
00:31Thanks for coming all the way to Class F! This is gonna be awesome!
00:35Yeah, sure! I'm kinda getting a weird vibe from these three.

02:11Right, then. We'll let you get started.
02:13Have fun. We'll talk soon.
02:14Hope it goes well.
02:18Sorry we got even more people dragged into this mess.
02:21The movie was a blast when we first started out,
02:23but without an ending we're kinda screwed.
02:25So thanks a lot for helping.
02:26Sure.
02:27Oh, I almost forgot!
02:30Here, I brought these for everyone to share!
02:33What are they?
02:34Whiskey-filled chocolates, huh?
02:36Promotional samples of a new product, apparently.
02:46That's strong!
02:51Well, want to get started?
02:56Why don't you give us your perspective as a member of the film crew?
03:00Would you say it was a difficult shoot?
03:01The performance and production side of things was pretty fun, actually.
03:05It was just getting out there that was a pain in the butt.
03:08By bus and train, the trip was more than an hour.
03:11I mean, would it have killed them to choose someplace closer?
03:13Why do you think they chose that location?
03:16I guess someone recommended it because it had an interesting look to it.
03:19I've heard about the deserted village in the Narakubo area,
03:22but I'm surprised you were allowed to film there.
03:24The person who recommended it had an in with a property manager.
03:27What's this got to do with anything, though?
03:29You never know what information might hold an important clue.
03:32Please, let's continue.
03:33Actually, if you don't mind me interrupting,
03:35I'd love to know how Hongo is doing.
03:37Not very well from the sound of it.
03:39But honestly, I wasn't too surprised when she got sick.
03:42Why's that?
03:42Is she the type of person who gets sick a lot or something?
03:45Yeah, she's been at some from school a whole bunch of times throughout the year.
03:48She didn't make it out to the shoot, either.
03:50She worked that hard on the script, but then didn't come to the shoot?
03:53How did the crew feel about Hongo's script?
03:57Was it pretty well received?
03:58Of course it was!
03:59No one had any problems with it.
04:01I mean, why would they?
04:02You sound a little defensive.
04:03I'm sorry, did I hit a nerve?
04:04I'm not being defensive.
04:06I'm just telling you that everyone liked Hongo's script.
04:08And that includes me!
04:11Let's move on to a different question.
04:14Sure.
04:14So did Hongo say anything to the actors about which of them might be playing the murderer?
04:20Hmm.
04:21No, there's not really anything I can think of.
04:24Well, maybe.
04:26It might not mean anything, but I remember she made a point to wish Konosu good luck.
04:31Which she could easily have said to anyone.
04:33So then, have you interviewed all the actors about this?
04:36To see if Hongo said anything to them that might be helpful?
04:39No, none of them.
04:40As assistant director, did you observe anything else that might be significant?
04:44Significant like how?
04:46Mwuhuh.
04:47Mwuh.
04:48Well, question's over.
04:50So maybe you'd like to hear my theory about the murderer now?
04:53More than anything.
04:54Ahem.
04:55If you ask me, your typical viewer doesn't care about fancy plot devices.
04:59All they want is a good story.
05:01That's him!
05:02He's the murderer!
05:07Once his guilt is revealed, the culprit breaks down in tears and confesses his crimes.
05:11The mystery's solved and everyone goes home happy.
05:15Ah...
05:16Huh?
05:17I think that's just the sort of satisfying ending the audience would expect after the horrifying discovery of Kaito's body.
05:24Our props guy did a great job with that scene.
05:27Even on the fly.
05:28On the fly?
05:29You're saying the scene was ad-lib?
05:31Yeah.
05:31Everybody got all fussy about it, though.
05:34Going on about the rules of a mystery.
05:36It's the drama of the story that matters, not the details.
05:39I say play the title straight.
05:41The Case of the Furuoka Deserted Village Murderer.
05:45Putting death right there in the title is a good way to sell seats.
05:48I bet you Honga knew that much about mystery flicks.
05:51Hmm.
05:51Okay, then.
05:52Do you want to tell us your theory of the crime?
05:54Given the way he died, you know what this was, right?
05:57A locked room murder.
05:59Kaito was found in a room with only one door and it was locked.
06:02So how'd the killer get out?
06:04That's the real question here.
06:06And you think you have an answer?
06:08Sure.
06:08It's simple.
06:09Through the window.
06:10The window?
06:11Yeah.
06:12The murderer kills Kaito, then climbs out the window.
06:15It's pretty obvious if you think about it.
06:17Hold on.
06:18My memory's a little bit fuzzy here.
06:23Satoshi, you have the floor plan?
06:24Yes, sir.
06:25I've got it right here, as a matter of fact.
06:28There.
06:28Let's take a look.
06:31This is the room where Kaito died, in the stage left wing.
06:34The other characters enter the room here, through the right hallway.
06:39Except initially, the door was locked, so two of the characters head back down the hall to get the master key.
06:46Then they return, open the door, and find Kaito dead inside the room.
06:50There were two other entry points, but they were totally blocked with furniture and other junk.
06:56So, as Nakajo suggested, there were only two points of access to the murder scene.
07:00The door everyone came in through, and the window on this wall.
07:04Except that doesn't mean much of anything if Hongo didn't know when she wrote the script.
07:08Oh, I'm sorry.
07:11I just mean, well, uh...
07:14You're totally right.
07:15That's important.
07:16How do you figure?
07:18What if she wrote the script without seeing the place?
07:20If the story was based on the floor plan alone, she might have considered other escape routes for the murderer to have taken.
07:26She saw it.
07:28Hongo went to visit the chute location before she started writing the script.
07:31Do you know when she went to see it?
07:33I think it was June.
07:34No, maybe the end of May, actually.
07:37Is that so?
07:38So, there you go, right?
07:40The killer came in and went up through the window.
07:43No need for a door at all.
07:45Just climb in, do the deed, and climb back out.
07:48Mystery solved.
07:51Boom!
07:52Really?
07:53Boom?
07:54That works, but it wouldn't make for a very well-crafted mystery.
07:57Hmm?
07:58Why would it be well-crafted?
08:00It's not like Hongo was an expert on mysteries.
08:03It didn't really seem like she had anything fancy in mind.
08:06Okay, then, who's the killer?
08:07What do you mean?
08:09Even if we say your theory about how it went down is true, can you tell us who the killer is?
08:14Hmm.
08:15Wow.
08:15You didn't take into account the fact that we get a look outside the window after everyone arrives at the scene, did you?
08:20The grass was way overgrown.
08:24Anyone passing through it would have left a pretty obvious trail, but from what I recall, nothing looked like it was even a little bit out of place.
08:31That doesn't line up with your theory.
08:34The killer couldn't have fled through the window.
08:36I don't know, maybe Hongo forgot to write that part in.
08:39Now you're grasping at straws.
08:41Come on.
08:42Hongo wasn't a slacker.
08:44From what we've heard, her writing was consistent.
08:47Yeah, I guess that's true.
08:49Hmm.
08:50Wait a sec.
08:52It's summer now.
08:53Don't you get it?
08:54Remember how I said that Hongo went to scout out the site back at the end of May?
08:58Well, at that point in time, the summer grass hadn't grown in yet.
09:01So she probably wouldn't have taken the grass into account when she wrote the scene.
09:04Hmm.
09:05All we have to do is cut the grass and reshoot the dead body scene.
09:08Then everything should fall neatly in a place top to bottom.
09:11And there you have it.
09:12Boom!
09:15See?
09:16We solved it.
09:17The killer fled through the window.
09:19Now we can get back to shooting and finishing this movie.
09:22Thanks!
09:23See you later.
09:25You think he's right?
09:27It's not much of a plot twist.
09:29It isn't fancy, but it is feasible at least.
09:33Feasible and lame?
09:35Well, Orekki, do you think Nakajo's theory is in line with what Hongo originally intended?
09:41It doesn't sit right with you?
09:43I wouldn't say that.
09:44I...
09:45I'm not totally convinced, that's all.
09:49In other words, it doesn't sit right with you.
09:51Yeah.
09:52Well, I can definitely see flaws in Nakajo's version of events.
09:57Huh?
09:57Would you care to elaborate?
09:59What seems like a simple solution to the physical problem of a locked room
10:02is made problematic itself by the psychology involved.
10:05Hmm?
10:06Say what now?
10:07You think you could find a more convoluted way of putting it?
10:10Every bit the cerebral detective.
10:13Hmm.
10:15Uh, would you mind explaining what you meant exactly?
10:18Just that any killer with an instinct for self-preservation wouldn't risk going in through the window.
10:25The window's here, right?
10:26If you go in that way, you're practically guaranteed to be seen by someone.
10:31There are other windows here, here, and here.
10:33Walking around in broad daylight, there's no way you're going to go unnoticed.
10:36Good call.
10:38If I were the killer, that would probably be the last way I'd go.
10:41Well, that's my take anyway.
10:44Uh-huh.
10:45I get your point, but did Hongo see the same problems you did?
10:50There's no way for us to know.
10:52You may be right, but I do think if we can get our hands on a copy of the script,
10:56that would help us figure some stuff out.
10:59I'm curious.
11:00When it comes to mysteries, what kind does everybody read?
11:04Uh, why?
11:06I got to thinking while we were listening to Nakajo talk.
11:10He has his own idea of what a mystery should look like, but what do we all think?
11:14Nakajo's idea of a mystery seems as sophisticated as a kid's picture book.
11:18Mm-hmm.
11:18What kind do you read, then?
11:20I don't know.
11:21Just the standard bestsellers, really.
11:23And you, Mayaka?
11:26Old stuff.
11:27You know, like Christy.
11:28The classics, huh?
11:29What about you, Chitanda?
11:31I don't read them.
11:32Seriously?
11:34Not at all?
11:35It's not that I've never read one.
11:36It's just I haven't bothered to in a long time.
11:39The truth is, I don't really care for mystery novels.
11:45I guess I've read enough of them to know that much, at least.
11:47That blows my mind.
11:49Didn't see that one coming.
11:50Okay, so what's your mystery genre of choice?
11:53Oh, me?
11:54Ah, well, you know.
11:55He may not want to come right out and say it, but Fuku here fancies himself to be a Sherlockian.
12:00What?
12:00I've never heard of a Sherlockian before.
12:02From the name, I'd say it refers to a passionate fan of Sherlock Holmes.
12:06Very passionate.
12:07Seriously hardcore.
12:09Right?
12:09I don't know if that's really how I would describe it.
12:14You might be oversimplifying a little bit.
12:22Did the interview go well?
12:24Yeah, I guess.
12:25We've rejected Nakajou's idea, though.
12:31Very well, I understand.
12:34There's one other thing.
12:37What is it?
12:38You think you could get us a copy of the script?
12:40We'd like to get a better feel for Hongo's attention to detail.
12:44I'll see if I can find one.
12:46It may take me some time.
12:47While I'm looking, you can speak with our props master, Tomohito Haba.
12:51He's waiting just outside.
12:55Hey there.
12:58I understand the four of you know your mystery stories.
13:09You know, if you think of a mystery as a contest between author and reader,
13:14an amateur writer like poor Hongo is bound to come up a little short.
13:17We heard that she didn't have a lot of experience with the genre.
13:21Yeah.
13:22She used those books to get ideas for how to write the screenplay.
13:25Until she started working on this film,
13:27I don't think she'd seen any crime shows or movies or read any mystery novels.
13:31Oh, the Nobuhara translation.
13:33Looks like the latest editions.
13:35She was teaching herself how to write a mystery by reading Holmes novels?
13:38See what I mean?
13:40Obviously Hongo was a total amateur.
13:42I suppose you could put it that way.
13:49Hey, Oreki, look at this.
13:50What is it?
13:51There are some strange-looking marks here on this paper.
13:54See?
13:54Here's another one.
14:02They're on here, too.
14:06She probably just marked the story she wanted to draw from.
14:10You really think that's all?
14:12Well, anyway...
14:12When are we going to work on our own mystery?
14:15What is this?
14:17A floor plan from Town Hall.
14:19Oh.
14:20We're interested to hear your theory.
14:22If you want my opinion, this mystery is not especially difficult to solve.
14:26Not if you're experienced with this sort of thing.
14:29Is that so?
14:30The first point I would make is that the murder was not premeditated.
14:33Rather, circumstances simply fell neatly into place and the killer seized that opportunity to act.
14:38Why do you say that?
14:39It couldn't have been preplanned, since there was no way to guarantee Kaito would end up in that room.
14:45The keys were spread out on the table, remember?
14:47Everybody picked one up at random, and that's what decided where they went to explore.
14:52Now then, this is a locked room murder, right?
14:55All points of escape were effectively blocked, aside from the window and the ground outside of that showed no sign of having been recently disturbed.
15:02That tells us whoever killed Kaito could not have escaped using conventional methods.
15:06And, of course, let's not forget the question of how the killer entered the room in the first place.
15:10Could they have used the master key and then replaced it afterwards?
15:13That is clearly an implausible explanation.
15:16In order to get to the office where the keys were, they would have to risk passing through the front lobby here.
15:21That would put them in danger of being seen by any of the other characters who were moving about the building.
15:26So we can easily write off that possibility.
15:28And the office isn't the only area the killer couldn't reach.
15:31The first floor hallway down the right side is the only open route leading to the room in which Kaito was found.
15:37But none of the others could have accessed it.
15:39Can anyone tell us why?
15:41For the same reason you already gave, they couldn't risk walking through the lobby and being seen by somebody.
15:48A good deduction.
15:51Plus, how could someone reach that room and still have time to re-enter from the correct direction when they regrouped?
15:55So other possibilities.
15:58Perhaps Kaito's death could have been a suicide disguised to look like a murder?
16:02Given the fact his arm was taken off, I'd say that's highly unlikely.
16:06All in all, this could be a difficult murder to solve.
16:09At least for someone who doesn't have experience with these things.
16:12But not for you.
16:14This is your specialty, right?
16:16What do you think the solution is to this murder mystery?
16:19Well, gosh.
16:20I just don't know.
16:21The mystery expert doesn't know.
16:23Well, I suppose I can't really blame you.
16:27This is the key.
16:29Some rope?
16:30I am the props master, remember?
16:31And Hongo specifically asked me to procure this.
16:34She said we needed to find a rope that was strong enough that it could support the full weight of a person.
16:39I'm sure you can see where this is leading, right?
16:42Just think.
16:44The killer couldn't enter from the first floor, but what about the second floor?
16:47Konosu was the one who went upstairs to the right-hand hallway.
16:50Konosu was in the mountaineering club, although you wouldn't know it from looking at her.
16:54She dangled the rope out of the second floor window, climbed down it to the stage left wing, killed Kaito, then escaped using the same route.
17:02If I were going to decide on a title for the movie, let me think.
17:05I suppose I'd go with something like The Unseen Incursion.
17:09All right, I'm ready to hear what you guys think.
17:12What other props were there?
17:14Did Hongo ask for anything interesting besides the strong rope?
17:17No, she didn't have very many requests, which I think speaks to her lack of experience.
17:21For example, the amount of blood she asked for wasn't nearly enough.
17:25Fortunately, I had the foresight to prepare extra so we would have plenty on hand.
17:29Now, will there be anything else?
17:33If not, I'll just be going.
17:35What is it?
17:36This may seem like a silly question, but have you seen the movie yet?
17:42Actually, I haven't had the chance to.
17:46That's it.
17:47Now I'm grouchy.
17:49Yeah, about what?
17:49That guy's attitude.
17:51I mean, he even made fun of Sherlock Holmes.
17:53Didn't that bother you at all, Fuku?
17:55Not really.
17:56How could it not?
17:57I think Sherlock Holmes' stories are perfect for newcomers to the mystery genre.
18:01And that's exactly what Hongo was, so why shouldn't she start there?
18:05So what do we think about Hava's conclusion?
18:07Well, it seemed like a pretty good one to me.
18:10I'm not saying I like the guy, but there must be a reason Hongo asked for rope and he makes a solid case for his explanation.
18:16Unfortunately, I can't argue with it either.
18:18I don't know.
18:19I'm not completely convinced that he's right.
18:21Just like with Nagajo's explanation, I can't say what exactly, but something about it feels a little off to me.
18:28I don't know, maybe it's silly, but I don't think that's what Hongo intended when she was writing the script.
18:35You really put down a lot of those.
18:37Whoa!
18:38Whoops!
18:39Did I eat all of them?
18:41I couldn't decide if I liked them, so I kept trying them to see if I could make up my mind.
18:46How are you feeling, Chi?
18:47Oh, I feel totally fine.
18:49Pretty great, actually.
18:50Hava's theory!
18:56Oriki, do you think he's on the right track or what?
18:59No, I think he's wrong.
19:01Why's that?
19:01It's not the idea itself that's an issue.
19:04That part's solid enough.
19:05But it doesn't work in this particular movie.
19:07Why not?
19:09It's inconsistent with what was filmed.
19:11Oh, I see.
19:13The window, huh?
19:14It probably hadn't been open in years since the place was abandoned.
19:17Katsuto gave it a good pull, and it still didn't want to open, so it must have been shut tight.
19:23Plus, it creaked loudly and opened upward.
19:25It would be impossible to open it quietly while dangling from the rope.
19:29Do we really think Kaito would just stand there doing nothing while somebody was rattling at the window?
19:34That would be pretty dumb.
19:35That explains why you asked Hava whether or not he'd seen the movie.
19:38Hongo had gone there to scope out the place.
19:41If the window was such an important plot point, she would have checked to see if it would open or not.
19:46But we all saw the footage, right?
19:48Obviously, the state of the window wasn't a big concern for her.
19:51I can't believe I was so quick to buy that jerk's idea!
19:58How did it go this time?
20:01Rejected.
20:02Very well.
20:04Here you are.
20:05You brought the script.
20:08This should be helpful.
20:11Hey, that looks cool!
20:13Can I have one too?
20:15Tipsy much?
20:16I'm just fine, thank you.
20:18Come on, let us see.
20:19Hmm.
20:20Looks pretty well laid out to me.
20:22She didn't skimp on details.
20:24Look at this note.
20:25Make sure there are no footprints outside the window.
20:28Nakajou's theory is totally out, then.
20:31There's still one person left.
20:33Sawakiguchi, right?
20:34Sorry, am I late?
20:37Ciao!
20:39Hello there, Sawakiguchi.
20:41I mean, ciao.
20:42I'd love to get this sorted out.
20:44There's not much I can do on the publicity front until we've got a title.
20:47Well, it's not like I can start making posters or anything.
20:50It's way past time we get this whole script thing settled, if you ask me.
20:54I've been wondering, did Hongo volunteer herself to write the screenplay?
20:58Nope.
20:58She was recommended.
21:00And making the film a mystery?
21:01Voted by the majority.
21:03What about the idea to make a movie in the first place?
21:05I think we're getting a little off track here.
21:07I don't think so.
21:08I'm curious.
21:09Here, I have the meeting minutes.
21:11If it'll help, you're welcome to take a look.
21:13Great, thank you.
21:15Alrighty.
21:15Is everybody ready to listen to what I have to say?
21:18First, I'd like to know what you picture in your head when you hear the word mystery.
21:22Let's start with...
21:24This guy.
21:25Murder on the Orient Express?
21:27A boring old whodunit book?
21:29How lame can you get?
21:30Huh?
21:31Think about what you see if you're renting a movie.
21:33It's all slasher flicks, the kind of stuff that's full of blood and gore and chainsaws.
21:37You know what I mean?
21:38Except those are horror films.
21:39Yeah, sure, I know what you mean.
21:41Huh?
21:41Think about it from the perspective of someone who's not all that interested in the genre.
21:46They wouldn't draw a distinction between mystery and horror.
21:50So anyway, the problem is that no one could get into the room where Kaito died, right?
21:56So obviously, there must have been a seventh person.
21:59Um, what?
22:00Hongo was looking for another actor in addition to the original six.
22:04Huh?
22:05Just think about it.
22:06They all begin to suspect one another.
22:07And right about the time their paranoia starts to peak, the phantom psycho killer appears
22:12out of nowhere.
22:14The phantom killer?
22:17I'm not sure how many of them get killed off, but I think the best bet is to have one couple
22:22left alive, you know, for a little romance.
22:25Together, they're able to defeat the phantom.
22:27And they share a kiss at sunrise.
22:29As for the title?
22:30Bloody Beast would work.
22:32Or whatever.
22:35That might be a bit cheesy.
22:38So what do you think?
22:39Good story, right?
22:40Except, the room where Kaito died was locked.
22:43So how did the killer get out?
22:45Isn't it obvious?
22:46He's a phantom.
22:48Phantom killers can walk their walls, can't they?
22:51But if that doesn't work...
22:53I know!
22:54It could be a vengeful spirit.
22:56Yeah!
22:56That's even better!
22:58She's totally, completely wrong!
23:00There's no way that's how Hongo meant for it to end when she wrote the screenplay!
23:03Getting a little worked up.
23:05I agree, though.
23:06That sounds more like a bad joke than a movie.
23:08But technically speaking, it would fit with what's been filmed so far.
23:11It's wrong!
23:12Just wrong!
23:13Yeah, maybe.
23:14But can you disprove it?
23:16What's wrong is wrong!
23:17The end!
23:21Are you okay?
23:24It's like looking into a kaleidoscope.
23:27What do you mean?
23:31Hey!
23:31Can you hear me?
23:33Hello?
23:38I think she's asleep.
23:39I have to admit, Sawakiguchi's idea may have been crazy, but I kind of like that about it.
23:48To be honest, I sort of like it, too.
23:50I'll bet you do.
23:52There are some inconsistencies, though.
23:54Like what?
23:55We all saw how detailed the script was.
23:58If Hongo had been planning that kind of horror twist for the second half of it,
24:01she would have arranged for the necessary props, don't you think?
24:04One prop in particular.
24:06And what would this particular prop be?
24:08You know, the one Haba had the foresight to make lots of.
24:12Oh.
24:13Hongo only asked for a small amount of fake blood.
24:16The description in the script seems to back that up.
24:19Knowing that, we can assume she wasn't planning on a movie with a high body count.
24:23I buy it.
24:24Not much of a horror movie with only one dead person.
24:26It's starting to feel like we're never going to figure this out.
24:34What did you think of this theory?
24:36Reject it again.
24:41Come on, Chi.
24:42Let's get you home.
24:44I'm sorry about this.
24:45Ugh.
24:49Three possible endings, but none of them work.
24:52I wonder what's going to happen to their movie now.
24:54Well, they won't be able to finish it, will they?
24:57Kind of depressing, isn't it?
24:58Summer grass.
24:59Tis all that remains of ancient warrior's dreams.
25:02Hmm.
25:02Later.
25:05Yeah.
25:08Oh my god, I can't believe it.
25:10No matter how much passion goes into a film, without real skill, it feels amateur.
25:18Totally.
25:19I know, right?
25:20And I haven't even told you the best one.
25:22Hello.
25:23I wonder if you might have time for a cup of tea.
25:30I wonder if you might have time for a cup of tea.
25:35See you next time for tomorrow.
25:37I'll see you next time.
26:07I'll see you next time.
26:37I'll see you next time.
27:07Blind spot to all.
