00:00So that's when it all changed for Rome.
00:03When the Romans overthrew the Etruscans in 509 BC, Rome established a republic.
00:08The people were divided into two classes.
00:10The patricians, made up of aristocrats, and the plebeians, made up of common folk and...
00:15I'm so bored.
00:16The classes were strictly forbidden from intermixing.
00:19Now, the aristocrats held all important governmental offices,
00:22such as the two consuls and the 300 senators.
00:25Furthermore, the Senate was considered to be the highest legislative and advisory body,
00:29meeting in the Curia to convene and pass laws.
00:32Did you hear that?
00:33Yeah, what was it?
00:34Is that Class A with Mr. Omichi?
00:37Yeah, I think so.
00:39It's as if you have no desire to learn anything.
00:42So why are you even here?
00:44It is Class A.
00:45What the heck's going on?
00:47Sounds like Omichi snapped and is on one of his tirades again.
00:52Hurry up, we don't have old days!
00:53What's your answer?
00:54Mr. Omichi, you should look at the lesson plan again.
00:56I think you got it wrong.
00:58Excuse me?
01:00Before you scream at us, you ought to be sure you're not the one making a mistake.
01:03Is that Chitanda?
01:08Sorry.
01:09I see where we are.
01:10Governor, you may sit down.
01:15Okay, let's get back to the Roman Republic.
01:19Let's see, where were we?
01:21Oh yes, the Senate and the Curia.
01:23So, the Curia was a huge building on the grounds of the Roman Forum.
01:28What's the name of the Roman Forum?

02:08I'll see you next time.
02:38I'll see you next time.
03:08You should just stay out of this, Chi.
03:10Look, maybe you did have a reason, but it's common courtesy to call.
03:13Or you could have even sent me a text at the very least.
03:16I wouldn't have cared if you'd canceled, but to stand me up without a word?
03:19I know you've got a cell phone, so why don't you use it?
03:22It never occurs to you to do the right thing.
03:24You don't care about anyone but yourself, and that's the truth.
03:27This is a big deal.
03:28That's a bold move on your part, Chitanda.
03:29I won't let you off the hook this time.
03:31You're full of useless information, but when it comes to...
03:33Your efforts are futile, though.
03:36You had to know how mad I would be, but you didn't care.
03:39Then it started storming like crazy.
03:41Rain, thunder, lightning, hail.
03:43A hail, Fukubei.
03:44You're the most inconsiderate person I've ever met.
03:47I even got all dressed up like an idiot,
03:49and by the time I got home, my favorite outfit was ruined.
03:52Ruined, Fukubei.
03:53Aren't you tired yet?
03:54All because you...
03:55Yes, I am.
03:56Why don't you take a breather?
03:58Fine, good idea.
04:04I didn't intervene for your sake, dummy.
04:07Wow, I've got to say, you get mad really often.
04:10Does yelling make you feel any better?
04:11You know, I only seem to get ticked enough to yell when you are involved,
04:15which I think is pretty telling.
04:16Yeah, makes sense.
04:18You know, maybe you should take a few pages from Chitanda's book.
04:20She never gets riled up about anything.
04:23I've never seen you like that either, Satoshi.
04:26And come to think of it, though, I've seen him get annoyed.
04:28Oroki doesn't often get downright angry.
04:30Not as far as I've noticed, anyway.
04:32Fukubei totally gets angry.
04:33Yeah, I've seen him livid.
04:38Do you really?
04:39Of course.
04:40I may not flip out and start screaming like Mayaka, but yeah, I get mad.
04:45I couldn't even imagine you having that kind of reaction about anything.
04:48Well, I am human, after all.
04:50I get angry sometimes.
04:52True, but you don't make a big production about bending your feelings in front of everyone.
04:57He's not very scary when he gets angry, though.
04:59Are you serious?
05:01Well, it's sure news to me.
05:03That piques my curiosity.
05:05I want to see it.
05:06What?
05:07I predict that Chitanda will have some grand scheme to trick Satoshi into getting ticked off.
05:11Just to see if it's possible.
05:13I can't wait for that.
05:15Oroki, do you have a secret temper?
05:18There's no hot blood in that one at all.
05:20Because he's so level-headed?
05:21It's more that he's way too selfish and shallow to get upset about anything in life.
05:27Hey, we may be frenemies, but that's over the line.
05:30Whoa, I got mad.
05:32Don't get me started on Hotaru.
05:34We'll be here all night.
05:35But Chitanda's lack of irascibility is almost heroic.
05:38She's like a Zen master.
05:39Her patience is incredible.
05:40No matter what, she always rolls with the punches.
05:43You might be happier if you tried to be more like her.
05:45That's easy for you to say, but you don't understand what it's like to be me.
05:49I don't think I could ever be as calm as Chi.
05:51Hold on, I'm confused.
05:53Is all this a compliment?
05:54For sure, it's totally a good thing.
05:56It's just an observation.
05:57There's no judgment either way.
05:59Definitely.
06:00Not being able to get angry is not good, but the ability to rise above it is another story.
06:04After all, wrath is a pretty serious sin.
06:07You should cut me some slack, Mayaka.
06:09The way you lash out isn't right.
06:10A sin?
06:11You mean the seven deadly sins?
06:13Yeah, I'm impressed, Chitanda.
06:15They're pretty well known throughout the world.
06:17Hey, Mayaka, have you ever heard of them?
06:19Yeah, everybody knows about those, right?
06:22Wait a sec, I thought there were 108 sins.
06:24No, those are earthly desires.
06:26Excuse me.
06:27Let me see.
06:28There's wrath, pride, gluttony, greed.
06:33Envy, lust, and sloth are the three others.
06:36Yeah, that's right.
06:37Sloth, you say?
06:38What's she looking at me for?
06:40Wow, that means she is perfect.
06:43You're honest, kind, and you don't eat too much.
06:45I wouldn't go that far.
06:47I doubt that you've ever been greedy, and you're really diligent.
06:50I am?
06:50And another thing.
06:51As for lust, you're not slutty.
06:53Awkward.
06:54There's no way to know if she's envious, but I would bet she isn't.
06:57This has turned from giving her simple compliments into full-out teasing.
07:01Let's stop talking about it.
07:03Anyway, when I am hungry, I could eat more food than you would ever imagine.
07:06No surprise there.
07:07I think her new nickname should be Saint Chi.
07:10Eru Chitanda kind of sounds like an angel's name, doesn't it?
07:13The archangels Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, and Eru.
07:16I don't think this is funny!
07:21She got mad.
07:23You're right.
07:24She yelled at us.
07:26Sorry, we didn't mean it, Chi.
07:28I'm done talking.
07:29Good job.
07:30You know exactly what to say to make a girl angry.
07:33Hold on just a minute.
07:34I think she's mad at you, too.
07:35Just because wrath is a sin doesn't mean it's good to never get angry.
07:42The same goes for the other deadly sins, too, doesn't it?
07:46Pride and greed can be useful as long as they're kept in balance.
07:50What do you mean?
07:51Well, imagine a person who has no pride whatsoever.
07:54Doesn't that mean they also have zero confidence?
07:57And if a person doesn't have an ounce of greed at all,
08:00wouldn't it be difficult for them to take care of themselves or a family?
08:04And think about envy.
08:05If people didn't ever feel it,
08:07there wouldn't be as many innovations, new technologies, or ideas.
08:12Oh, um, I didn't mean to go into lecture mode or anything.
08:16Sorry.
08:17Hmm, that's okay.
08:18Interesting take.
08:20So they're fine in moderation?
08:22I just don't think it's wise to take the term deadly sins so literally
08:26and then live our lives as if those seven normal human emotions
08:29are gonna kill us or something.
08:30So then what you're saying is that it's not necessarily a bad thing to get mad?
08:34Yeah, pretty much.
08:35I mean, if you always stifle your anger,
08:37it might start to get in the way of your ability to enjoy your life too.
08:41I definitely get mad.
08:43But like, if that's your philosophy, then why don't you ever get mad?
08:47Because it's draining.
08:49And I avoid doing things that wear me out.
08:51Oh, our Chitanda has been corrupted by Hotaro!
09:04How could we have let this happen?
09:06There are evil spirits roaming the halls of Kamihai!
09:08Ghosts, hellbent on conserving energy!
09:10Please, Chi, snap out of it!
09:12That's right.
09:13What have you done with our friends?
09:13What have you done with our friends?
09:14Jerks.
09:14I'm kidding!
09:16Huh?
09:17Huh?
09:17I was just playing.
09:20It was a joke?
09:23And here I thought I'd found my twin flame.
09:26Sorry to scare you.
09:27I just thought I'd be funny.
09:30But it isn't like I don't get angry.
09:33Everyone does, even me.
09:35Huh?
09:35Yeah, for example, I get mad when...
09:42I get really angry when I see people wasting food.
09:45In my house, a grain of rice equals a drop of sweat.
09:49She's totally a true farmer's daughter.
09:52Hey, I almost forgot.
09:53Speaking of flying off the handle,
09:55wasn't that you I heard yelling at Mr. Omichi during Fifth Period today?
10:02Yeah, you're right.
10:03I can't believe I forgot about that.
10:07I want to hear your thoughts.
10:09Tell me what you make of my angry outburst today, Omichi.
10:12Oh, crap.
10:24Well, I gotta get going.
10:29Wait!
10:29Before you go, I just want to hear what you think about what happened.
10:32Did something crazy go down?
10:38Yeah.
10:39As a matter of fact, it was crazy.
10:41I still can't believe it.
10:42In math, I got angry.
10:45Whoa.
10:46Chi, are you kidding again?
10:48No, I'm serious.
10:49But I can't really figure out what specifically made me mad,
10:52only that I had gotten mad.
10:54Ordinarily, I would have made the choice not to have gotten mad.
10:56But I made the mad choice, and now being made mad makes me really curious.
11:00Which kind of makes the being made mad okay, if you think about it.
11:06Have you gone mad?
11:07I was made mad and then made curious about being made mad.
11:10Never mind the semantics.
11:14I have to know!
11:15Go fight, go fight, go fight, go fight!
11:23Today my class had math, fifth period.
11:26Mr. Omichi was teaching and in a bad mood.
11:28Oriki and Fukubei, you guys have him too,
11:30so you know pretty well what he can be like when he gets himself riled up.
11:34I guess I should explain what happened from the very beginning.
11:37Let's see.
11:37Mr. Omichi opened the door to the classroom right as the tardy bells started to ring.
11:43Before he came in, he stopped outside the doorway and looked up to the class plate,
11:47I guess so he would know what class he was teaching.
11:49But that's not unusual, he does it every time.
11:53Once he got in, the first thing he did was write a quadratic equation up on the board.
11:58It was simple enough, but he did something new this time.
12:01He included bounds for X, which wasn't something we knew how to do.
12:04Then Omichi called on Kawasaki.
12:08He told him to stand up in front of the class and solve the equation for the range of Y.
12:13Kawasaki froze.
12:15He was confused, which is only natural, considering we hadn't learned about ranges yet.
12:19We were all nervous at this point.
12:22Kawasaki said that he didn't know how to solve for Y, which is what started it.
12:25That's when Mr. Omichi flipped out and started screaming at us for being bad students.
12:30He calmed down after a bit and called on Tamura, who's really good at math.
12:34Unfortunately, Tamura didn't know what to do either.
12:38When the best guy at math in the class didn't know,
12:40I got the idea that maybe Mr. Omichi had been mistaken about the lesson plan.
12:44The other students must have figured it out too, and things got a little chaotic.
12:48Well, that really set Mr. Omichi off, so he started being even harsher with us.
12:54He even started beating the chalkboard like a maniac, which had never happened before.
12:57Someone in class may have been able to solve the problem, but at that point, no one wanted to speak up.
13:04Everyone just stared at their desks.
13:06Then Mr. Omichi made Tamura stand up again and started berating him, trying to make an example out of him, I guess.
13:11That's when I just couldn't take it anymore and had to stand up.
13:14I told Omichi he must be mistaken and to double-check our class's progress in the lesson plan.
13:20So now I see that's the exact point when I got angry.
13:25Well, what happened next?
13:26Let me see.
13:28Then he just turned the page in his textbook.
13:30He saw something there and said, oh, that's right, then he apologized.
13:33After that, he told Tamura to sit down and continue teaching like nothing had even happened.
13:38So that's Mr. Omichi's teaching style, huh?
13:41Oh, for sure.
13:42You would be traumatized if I went into detail about the kind of grief that man gave me after midterms.
13:47We had teachers like him back in elementary and middle school, though, right?
13:50Ones with really bad tempers.
13:53Besides, your crappy grades are your own fault, not his.
13:55You better study for the final.
13:58So anyway, that's the story.
14:01What do you think?
14:04Is anything about that out of the ordinary?
14:07What I'm curious about is how Mr. Omichi made that kind of mistake in the first place.
14:17It seems so out of character for him.
14:19He's usually kind of a perfectionist, so it's on.
14:22Yeah, you're right.
14:23And I think the reason Omichi is so strict with his students is that he's equally hard on himself.
14:28So then how could he have made such a simple mistake?
14:31That's the part I don't understand.
14:33Yeah, weird.
14:34I don't understand it either.
14:35Hey, Araki!
14:36Beats me.
14:36Look, if you really want to know that badly, why don't you go right to the source and pick Omichi's brain instead of mine?
14:42Because that would take all the fun out of it.
14:44Oh, yeah?
14:45Well, I guess you'll never know the answer.
14:46You might as well give it up.
14:48I'm too curious for that!
14:49Araki, why don't you want to think about this with me?
14:52Why me?
14:53Come on, silly!
14:54Don't you think it would be fun for us to try to figure this out together?
14:56I don't like her talking to me like I'm a little kid.
15:00Look, Chi, you might want to avoid getting your hopes up about this guy.
15:04He was a sloth in one of his past lives.
15:06What?
15:07Mayaka, you can do past life regression?
15:09Nice distraction, Mayaka.
15:12Interesting, but right now I want to know about Omichi.
15:14Damn, she won't be swayed.
15:16I just... I have to know!
15:26Mr. Omichi always makes a point to write a note in his textbook at the end of every class.
15:30Why do you think he takes the time to do that?
15:32So he can remember how far he got in each lesson and pick up there for the next class.
15:36That's what I thought.
15:37He also does that weird thing where he looks at the class plate before he comes into the room.
15:41It seems like a foolproof system, so how is there room for any mistakes on his part?
15:47He probably writes the name of the class and the date on the page where they stopped.
15:51Like on page 15, class A, July 1st, or something.
15:55Otherwise, it would be really easy for him to lose track.
15:58Do you think maybe he could have forgotten what the date was?
16:01If that were the case, he would have gone back a previous day, not skipped ahead.
16:05Use your brain a little, dummy.
16:07Well, she's not wrong.
16:10Something's bugging me about this.
16:11Want to hear?
16:12Of course, go ahead.
16:13I can understand you getting mad about something like that.
16:16But I can't imagine you feeling so strongly about it that you'd take the risk to talk back to a teacher.
16:21Why do you think you did?
16:22I was angry, but I didn't just speak up because he was being mean to us.
16:26That's not unusual for Mr. Omichi.
16:29Then was it that the people who knew the answer didn't come forward?
16:32No way.
16:33Who would have wanted to solve it in that situation even if they did know the answer?
16:37Could you have been mad that no one else had the courage to correct him?
16:41Oh, no?
16:43Hmm.
16:45Do you think you just felt sorry for him, Tamura?
16:49I mean, I did feel pretty bad for the guy.
16:52But I can't imagine why that would make me mad enough to talk back.
16:55It's kind of a regular occurrence that a student who doesn't know the answer to a problem we've already covered in class would get berated by the teacher, isn't it?
17:03But as far as what made me stand up to Mr. Omichi...
17:06It's really hard to understand ourselves sometimes.
17:13You're right.
17:14What pushes Chitanda's buttons?
17:16What makes her tick?
17:17I still don't feel like I know her well enough to be able to say one way or the other.
17:23So what's your take?
17:24What do you think?
17:27Uh...
17:27The clue about Omichi writing the note in his book on the class's progress is the one that might lead to an answer here.
17:34But even doing that, he still made a mistake.
17:37Since it's math, which is cumulative, they're going in order, so there had to be notes written on the previous pages in the chapter, too.
17:43You're absolutely 100% positive that your class hadn't learned about ranges.
17:49I'm sure. Positive.
17:51Well, suppose you had already learned about them. Then what?
17:55I don't see what you're getting at.
17:57Omichi teaches the same concepts every school term. Class 1A had the same lesson last year, didn't they?
18:03If you're saying he saw the previous year's mark and got confused, that isn't a possible answer.
18:08How can you be sure?
18:10The teacher's editions are replaced every year.
18:12Sure. The publishers go through and make slight corrections, put in new problems, etc.
18:16In order to make sure they're all on the same page, no pun intended, they just reissue them.
18:21They're currently on the 4th edition.
18:23I can't believe you know that.
18:25If it weren't for us, all of your knowledge would be useless.
18:28Databases are never useless.
18:33Maybe Omichi just wrote the wrong thing in his book.
18:36It could be the case, but...
18:38I doubt that answer would satisfy Chitanda's curiosity.
18:42I gotta admit, I don't understand ranges either.
18:48It's all I can do to put X and Y in the same plane, and even that's a chore, which is kind of pathetic.
18:54I'm gonna be in for a world of pain if Omichi sets his sights on me.
18:58Wait a second.
18:58Do you mean Class 1D has already covered the ranges unit?
19:03Oh, yeah.
19:04Mm-hmm.
19:04So Satoshi's class would have been able to solve the problem, but Chitanda's couldn't.
19:09Mine wouldn't have either.
19:10Then that's the answer.
19:15Oh, man, I recognize that look.
19:17You figured it out, huh?
19:18I might have.
19:20Chitanda.
19:21Yes?
19:22You're absolutely certain there was a note in the textbook farther ahead than the point your class had reached.
19:26Is that right?
19:27Yes.
19:28No doubt about it.
19:29And it had to be one he's written this year.
19:31It was just not on the page where Class 1A had actually stopped.
19:35Right.
19:35So what if we were to assume that the note was on the correct page just for the wrong class?
19:41What if the note was a progress marker for Satoshi's, not yours?
19:45My class?
19:46Hmm.
19:48Hmm.
19:50Omichi teaches math to four classes, A, B, C, and D.
19:54Even if the note wasn't for A or B, that doesn't mean it has to be for Class D.
19:59And even if it was for that class, why would it matter?
20:02Well, if that were the case, it makes sense that he would mistake the mark for Class A's.
20:09There's not much chance he'd confuse a C for a D, is there?
20:12Huh?
20:13Now you're talking nonsense again.
20:15No one would mistake an A for a D either.
20:18But Omichi is a mathematician.
20:20Yeah?
20:20So what?
20:21That's why it's likely.
20:23It's really easy to mistake those two letters when you do math.
20:27How?
20:27Let's say on page 10, Omichi wrote July 1st, Class A.
20:34Then on page 15, he would have written July 1st, Class D.
20:37Does that make sense?
20:38Okay, so what exactly are you getting at?
20:40Why would anyone confuse one for the other?
20:42Just assume he did for a sec.
20:44If so, then what went down today is pretty likely, right?
20:47Huh?
20:48Wait.
20:49I don't get how that would ever happen.
20:51Because when you write equations, A and D would look like this.
20:57I get it!
20:59He thought a lowercase d was an A!
21:01You solved it!
21:02Hmm.
21:03I guess you're right.
21:05One time, on an English test, I lost points because the teacher couldn't tell some of my lowercase letters apart.
21:11Same here.
21:11It's difficult.
21:13On my test, the teacher couldn't distinguish the N's from the H's.
21:16That's what happened.
21:17It seems so obvious now.
21:19Man, I'm glad that's settled.
21:23Huh?
21:24D and A.
21:26I can't blame him for mixing those up.
21:28I feel bad now.
21:29I guess I was a bit out of line for getting so mad and yelling, huh?
21:33I'm surprised I didn't get in trouble for it.
21:35Huh.
21:37What?
21:38How can you say that?
21:39He was a total D and screamed at the class for no good reason!
21:43You have to stand up for what's right!
21:44Hey, calm down.
21:45Just look at how late it's gotten.
21:47Don't you think it's time we headed home?
21:49But wait!
21:50I wasn't finished!
21:51I know, but why does it matter?
21:53The mystery's been solved.
21:54Hey!
21:55I'm not done with you!
21:57Chitanda, who's usually slow to anger, got mad today and had to know why.
22:04She said herself that wrath isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I wonder, for some reason she still seems to avoid getting riled up.
22:11Could her quest to pinpoint the cause of her anger have been motivated by some desire to let Omichi off the hook?
22:18Did she just want to find some proof that she was wrong to get mad in the first place?
22:23Is that the kind of person that Ero Chitanda really is?
22:26At her core?
22:28Nah.
22:30Who am I kidding?
22:31I don't truly know her at all.
22:33Even if I knew her well enough to make predictions about her behavior, if I ever presumed to be able to read her mind, well, I know what that'd be.
22:44A cardinal sin.
22:46Pride.
22:47One of the seven deadly ones.
22:49Avoid those at all costs, they say.
22:51I mean, come on.
22:53How many times has Chitanda surprised me, in this afternoon alone?
22:57Hey, Oreki!
22:58Hmm?
22:59Aren't you coming with us?
23:00Oh, of course.
23:02I'm sorry.
23:04Hey, listen.
23:06Thank you for your help with everything.
23:09I mean, it feels like you're always solving these mysteries for me, doesn't it?
23:14Yeah, and it's becoming a real hassle.
23:16What are you guys still waiting around for?
23:22Yeah, you want to live at the school?
23:25No, we're right behind you.
23:27Well, should we be going then?
23:29Sure.
23:35I guess tomorrow I'll pick up where I left off.
23:38Come on, Oreki!
23:40That may be true for you, Mayaka.
23:43Think about it from her perspective.
23:46And so, another afternoon of my high school life has spent squandering my energy.
23:52I've got my hands full with one deadly sin, Sloth.
23:55That's plenty for now.
24:26I'm not sure what it is.
24:33I don't know if you're feeling this kind of warm,
24:43I can't really understand this kind of feeling.
24:49I'm not sure what this is.
24:54It's the same as a friend who is doing it
24:59It's a dream that will消 you
25:03It's a dream that I love
25:05It's a dream that I love
25:10We'll be in love with a happy dream
25:17You can see it, see it, see it
