Transcript
00:00The People's National Movement is calling for an immediate independent investigation into explosive allegations surrounding the Minister of Homeland Security.
00:10According to recent media reports, the minister allegedly met with known gang leaders before and after the last general election at a state prison.
00:19The reports which have not yet been officially confirmed suggest that a senior government minister tasked with overseeing national security held secret meetings with gang leaders inside a state-run prison.
00:34The meetings reportedly took place in the critical period surrounding the last general election and were allegedly brought to the attention of both the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and the prison's authority.
00:46In response, the PNM released a statement today describing the revelations as a direct threat to the nation's democracy and the integrity of its security systems.
00:57The party is calling for an immediate and independent investigation into the allegations, a public statement from the Prime Minister in her capacity as chair of the National Security Council,
01:09and clarification from the Commission of Police on whether these reports are under investigation.
01:15The situation has intensified after the Minister of Homeland Security declined to respond when questioned by reporters outside Parliament last week, walking away in silence.
01:27The PNM says such a dismissive approach only fuels public suspicion and undermines confidence in the government's transparency and accountability.
01:36The party also sought to remind the country that the Prime Minister, as chair of the National Security Council, bears ultimate responsibility for safeguarding the nation's security architecture.
01:48They insist that if allegations are credible, they raise profound questions not only about the conduct of the minister, but also about what was disclosed at the highest levels of government.
02:00The PNM says this is not an issue for silence or evasion.
02:05They are demanding swift action to restore public trust and protect the integrity of Trinidad and Tobago's democratic institutions.
02:13I appreciate it.
