00:00There's a lake in Massachusetts with the longest name in the United States.
00:05And today we're going to tell you what it is and how you can pronounce it.
00:09It's me and this is my channel.
00:11The lake's name is Chargogogogmanchogogchobunogunogamog.
00:17And it's located in Webster, Massachusetts, which is about 30 miles from the Rhode Island border.
00:23Webster is known for two things.
00:25This lake and the fact that it's home to the largest cranberry bog in the world.
00:30But I'm getting a little ahead of myself.
00:32Let's talk about that lake.
00:34The name translates roughly to where the big fish are caught.
00:38And that's because the indigenous people who lived around the lake used to catch huge fish,
00:43including sturgeon, which can grow up to 8 feet long and weigh more than 300 pounds.
00:49These days, you're more likely to see bass, perch and catfish here.
00:55And don't worry.
00:56None of those are going to weigh 300 pounds.
00:59Now, the actual name of the lake is a bit of a mouthful,
01:02even for someone like me who's spent most of his life in New England.
01:05So let's break it down.
01:07We'll start with the first part, Char.
01:09That's easy enough.
01:11Then we have go, go, um, man, chow, bun,
01:14ay, gung, ay, mug.
01:16Woo!
01:17I'm already tired.
01:18Just kidding.
01:20It's not that bad once you get the hang of it.
01:22So according to some very smart people at a university,
01:25the name of the lake is derived from the Nipmuc people's language,
01:29specifically the word for fish, which is chowgog.
01:32The second half of the name is thought to come from the word for place,
01:36which is gonggaman.
01:37Put it all together and you get somewhere in the realm of big fish place,
01:41or as the non-Nipmuc speakers among us call it,
01:44chargoga, gogman, chowgga, gog, chow, bunagun, ga, maug.
01:48It's one of those names that's really fun to say once you get the hang of it.
01:53And once you do get the hang of it,
01:55you'll probably want to visit the lake and show off for all your friends back home.
01:59So if you're planning a trip to Massachusetts anytime soon,
02:03do yourself a favor and take a detour to Webster.
02:06You can rent a boat and go fishing or just sit on the shore
02:09and enjoy the longest lake name in the United States.
02:12Just try not to get it tangled up with all the other Massachusetts place names
02:16that have a bunch of random letters thrown into them.
02:19I know it can be confusing, but this one's pretty unique.
02:23Thanks for watching.

02:29And as always, thanks for watching.
