00:00Did you know that Kentucky is the birthplace of both bourbon and bluegrass music?
00:05Talk about a cultural export.
00:07From the rolling hills of the bluegrass state comes a sound that
00:10is as distinct and recognizable as its namesake bluegrass music.
00:15And from those same hills comes a spirit that's just as integral to the state's identity, bourbon.
00:20Today we're going to pour up a glass and raise it to the Commonwealth of Kentucky,
00:24the only state in the U.S. where you can legally buy a bottle of bourbon
00:28and a ticket to a bluegrass show on the same day.
00:31And don't worry, we didn't forget the other.
00:34Bluegrass, like bourbon, was born in the bluegrass state.
00:38The genre is said to have been born in the 1940s
00:41when musicians started to incorporate the distinctive sounds of the Appalachian Mountains into their music.
00:48This new style of music, which emphasized the use of acoustic instruments
00:52and often featured close harmony singing, became known as bluegrass.
00:56And some of the biggest names in the genre, like Bill Monroe, Flat and Scruggs,
01:01the Stanley Brothers, and many more, got their start in Kentucky.
01:04In fact, the state is home to dozens of music festivals celebrating bluegrass every year.
01:09But what about bourbon?
01:11Well, the story of bourbon begins with the settlers
01:14who brought their Scotch-Irish musical traditions to Kentucky in the 1700s.
01:19They adapted the Scotch style of whiskey-making to the local grains and climate.
01:23And voila, bourbon was born.
01:26Today, more than 95% of the world's bourbon is made in Kentucky,
01:31and the industry is a major part of the state's economy.
01:35In fact, bourbon tourism is a big business in Kentucky,
01:38with many distilleries offering tours and tastings.
01:41So if you're ever in the bluegrass state,
01:43be sure to sample both its signature spirits.
01:46And don't worry, we won't tell anyone if you start your day with a bottle of bourbon
01:50and end it with a bluegrass concert.
01:53Just make sure to pace yourself so you can enjoy both the music and the drink.
