00:00It's illegal to keep an ice cream cone in your back pocket on Sundays in Georgia.
00:04Now that sounds like a strange law, doesn't it?
00:07Well, let me explain.
00:08It all has to do with horses.
00:11See, back in the day when horse-drawn carriages were a common sight on the streets of Atlanta,
00:17people would sneak ice cream cones into their back pockets to try and lure them away.
00:22You see, horses are naturally curious and they can smell delicious things from far away.
00:28So people thought that by hiding the ice cream in their back pocket,
00:31they could sneak up on a horse and then put the cone in front of its face to distract it
00:36while they either stole the horse or did something else with it.
00:40Can't quite remember what that something else was, but I think you get the picture.
00:44Well, this didn't go unnoticed for long.
00:46And eventually the police started pulling people over for trying to hide their ice cream cones in their back pockets.
00:52And in 1917, the Atlanta City Council passed an ordinance making it illegal to keep an ice cream cone in your back pocket on Sundays.
01:01The law was never enforced and it remained on the books until 2021 when it was finally repealed.
01:07But just to be safe, I wouldn't recommend trying to stick an ice cream cone in your back pocket anytime soon.
01:13Now here's another interesting fact about ice cream.
01:17Did you know that it was invented in the United States?
01:20That's right.
01:22Most people think that ice cream was invented in Italy,
01:24but it was actually invented in New York State by an Italian immigrant named Antonio Latoada.
01:30He combined gelato, which is Italian for ice cream,
01:34with American ingenuity to create the first waffle cone in 1904 at the St. Louis World's Fair.
01:40And the rest, as they say, is history.
01:44Georgia may be famous for its peaches, but it's also home to a surprising number of weird laws.
01:50From a law that makes it illegal to whisper in someone's ear while they are driving
01:55to a law that makes it illegal to carry a concealed weapon into a church.
02:00The peach state has its share of quirky regulations.
02:04So what do you think about these laws?
02:06Do you think they're silly or do you think they make sense?
02:09Let me know in the comments below.
