00:00Mississippi has the world's shortest railroad.
00:03It runs only about two miles.
00:05Can you imagine?
00:07There are many theories about why it was built so short.
00:10Some say it was built to haul cotton.
00:12That makes sense because Mississippi was one of the largest producers of cotton in the
00:15United States, second only to Texas.
00:18And back in the day when railroads were being built across the country, they were primarily
00:23used to transport agricultural products to market.
00:27In fact, the first segment of this railroad was completed in 1831 and it ran from a place
00:33called Chunky to the Alabama State Line.
00:37It was originally built by the Alabama and Tennessee River Railroad Company.
00:41Their goal was to connect the cotton fields of Mississippi to the Port of Mobile, which
00:45was a major shipping port at the time.
00:48The problem was that the railroad ended at the Alabama State Line, about two miles from
00:54the nearest point in Mississippi.
00:56So they built a two-mile railroad in Mississippi to connect the two.
01:00Now the entire railroad is owned by Canadian Pacific, and it runs freight trains, mostly
01:05hauling grain and soybeans, but the original purpose of the railroad was to transport cotton.
01:11If you want to see the world's longest railroad, you'll have to travel all the way to Australia.
01:16It's almost 2,000 miles long.
01:20If you enjoyed this video, stay tuned for more railroad facts every day.
01:24See you later.
