00:00Did you know that the deepest lake in the United States is located in Oregon?
00:05It's true. The deepest lake in the U.S. is Crater Lake, which is found in the southern part of the
00:11state. And it's not even the deepest lake in the world. There are several lakes that are deeper
00:16than Crater Lake. But for a country that has the world's largest ocean, the United States sure
00:22doesn't have many impressive lakes. Crater Lake was formed thousands of years ago when a volcano
00:28collapsed. The caldera from the volcano is what eventually filled with water to form the lake.
00:34Today, Crater Lake is 1,143 feet deep. That's almost twice the height of the Empire State Building.
00:42If you were to fill the Grand Canyon with water, it would only be about two-thirds full. When you
00:48look at a map of the United States with all the lakes charted, it's mostly just the Great Lakes
00:53that really stand out as impressive bodies of freshwater. The deepest of these is Lake Superior
00:59at 1,233 feet deep. That's more than twice the depth of Crater Lake. But even Lake Superior is
01:07only the seventh deepest lake in the world. To put that into perspective, the world's deepest lake
01:12is located in Canada, and it's called Lake Baikal. It's 5,387 feet deep. That's more than three times
01:20the depth of the Grand Canyon. Now, I don't know about you, but I think it's pretty cool that we
01:25have a lake that's deeper than a volcano. Do you think it's cool that we have a lake that's deeper
01:30than a volcano? Let us know in the comments below. And while you're down there, be sure to subscribe
01:35if you haven't already, because we've got lots more fun geography videos coming up. In the next one,
01:41we'll explore whether or not Florida can actually be seen from space. So be sure to check that one out
01:47next. Thanks for watching. This has been your host. And until next time, goodbye.
