00:00Did you know in Nevada there's a town called Jackpot?
00:03Well, there's actually a couple towns.
00:05There's one near Elko and one near the Idaho border.
00:08But we're talking about that one because, well, gambling.
00:12The story goes that back in the 1930s, Idaho banned slot machines.
00:17So all the gamblers crossed the border into Nevada where there was a tiny settlement called Montello.
00:23The locals didn't like the outsiders coming in and taking their money.
00:27So they did what any reasonable people would do.
00:30They packed up their things and moved across the border to Idaho, leaving the town to the gamblers.
00:36And since there were no services in Jackpot at the time, the gamblers built their own casino and hotel.
00:41And the rest is history.
00:43Today, Jackpot is a popular spot for gamblers, but it's also home to a bunch of other businesses.
00:49There's a gun shop, a feed store, a golf course, a convenience store, a school, a fire station, a post office, a pharmacy, and even a medical clinic.
00:59And if you're looking for work, Jackpot is a pretty good place to look.
01:03The unemployment rate is around 2%.
01:05That's half of what it is in Las Vegas.
01:08But if you're thinking about moving to Jackpot, bring a lot of money.
01:13Houses don't come cheap.
01:14The median home price is around $700,000.
01:17That's more than double the national median.
01:21So why is this place called Jackpot?
01:23Well, it's not because they have a lot of jackpots here.
01:27It's because the people who live here won the jackpot of living in a place with no income tax and plenty of jobs.
