00:00Hawaii is the only U.S. state that grows coffee commercially, and it's also the only one made
00:06entirely of islands. There are eight main islands and hundreds of smaller ones that make up the
00:12state of Hawaii. The largest island is Hawaii, also known as the Big Island. It's about twice
00:18the size of Connecticut and has more than 200,000 residents. The island is home to five active
00:24volcanoes and is the only place in the world where coffee is grown commercially. The Kona coast on
00:31the Big Island is famous for its coffee. The climate and soil here is perfect for growing coffee.
00:37The beans are said to be some of the best in the world, but it's not easy to grow coffee in Hawaii.
00:43The plants are grown at an elevation of about 2,000 feet. They have to be picked by hand,
00:48and the workers often have to wear protective clothing because of the high altitude,
00:52and the coffee is so perishable that it has to be processed and shipped out within 24 hours of
00:58picking. Despite all these challenges, Hawaii produces about 7 million pounds of coffee each
01:04year. That's enough to make about 1 billion cups of coffee. The second largest island in Hawaii is
01:10Maui. It's about the same size as Long Island, New York, and is home to about 150,000 residents.
01:17Maui is known for its beautiful beaches, lush rainforests, and towering waterfalls.
01:23The third largest island is Oahu. It's about the same size as Rhode Island and is home to about 1
01:31million residents. Oahu is home to Hawaii's capital city of Honolulu and is the most densely populated
01:38place in the state. The fourth largest island is Kauai. It's about the same size as Delaware
01:44and is home to about 70,000 residents. Kauai is known for its stunning natural beauty and is often
01:51called the Garden Isle. The other three islands that make up Hawaii are Lanai, Molokai, and Nihau.
01:59Lanai is the smallest of the bunch and is home to about 3,000 residents. Molokai is home to about 7,000
02:07residents, and Nihau is privately owned and has no roads or running water. So there you have it,
02:13a quick overview of the 8 main islands that make up the state of Hawaii. If you're planning a trip to
02:19Hawaii, be sure to visit all of them. You won't be disappointed. Thanks for watching. We'll see you next time.
