Did you know that New York was once the worst planned city in the world?
00:04
I mean, just look at this.
00:07
It's a hot mess, but how did it go from this to this?
00:10
Well, that's what we're talking about today.
00:13
So buckle up, Buttercup, because we're about to take a rollercoaster right through time.
00:19
A long time ago, way before the time of dinosaurs, there was no skyscraper in New York.
00:26
The tallest building in 1825 was for stories.
00:31
And if you wanted to see the Statue of Liberty, you'd have to book an appointment because it wasn't finished yet.
00:37
But that all changed when the city decided to hold an architecture competition.
00:43
The mayor at the time said, hey, let's get some spires in here.
00:48
And architects submitted designs for buildings with absolutely massive towers.
00:53
But then people were like, you ate.
00:56
We don't really want that much height.
00:59
That's kind of scary.
01:01
And the mayor was like, yeah, you're right.
01:04
Let's make them a little bit shorter.
01:07
So the winning design got belt.
01:09
But then they made it shorter.
01:11
And this is what we got.
01:13
The worst planned city in the world.
01:16
But then something amazing happened.
01:18
People started to like living in cities again after the invention of indoor plumbing.
01:23
And then, even more amazingly, wealthy people started moving into cities.
01:29
And then even more amazingly after that, developers realized that they could make a lot of money by building apartments for these rich people.
01:38
So they started building upwards.
01:41
And then something miraculous happened.
01:44
They built something taller than the short version of the winning skyscraper design from the competition.
01:50
And then they kept building taller and taller until they hit the clouds.
01:54
And then they kept going because they could.
01:58
I mean, why not?
02:00
There's no laws or anything.
02:02
This is America.
02:04
And then one day they stopped because they built something called the Chrysler Building.
02:08
Which was the tallest building in the world.
02:11
And then they kept going and built something called the Empire State Building.
02:16
Which was also the tallest building in the world.
02:19
And then they built even more tall buildings.
02:22
So many tall buildings that they started to block the sun.
02:25
And then people were like,
02:27
Hey, let's put some parks in here to soak up some of that extra sun.
02:32
And the city was like,
02:34
Yeah, that's a good idea.
02:36
But only if you can make them into giant flat roofs so we can build more tall buildings.
02:41
And that's how we got Central Park.
02:44
So there you have it.
02:45
The history of architecture in New York City in 60 seconds.
