Tropical moisture is on the way to the Southwest, with unusual September rain expected in Southern California.
Transcript
00:00Across the southwest, we're beginning to see a little more moisture come in.
00:04You can see some showers, thunderstorms south of L.A.
00:07And we're going to begin to see this ramp up.
00:09We can find the ghost of Mario.
00:11Former tropical storm Mario is on the map.
00:14And overall, we'll use the spotlight tool to highlight that low-level swirl of low pressure.
00:19There it is.
00:20And, again, that is the main agent driving some of this moisture up into parts of Southern California here around the circulation.
00:27So, generally, that former tropical system is a big contributor to the moisture coming into Southern California.
00:34Now, in a typical September, whole month of September, we only average around 0.1 to 0.15 inches of rain in September in San Diego and L.A.
00:44We'll probably pick up probably twice that, maybe a little more than that, just over the next two days in those cities from this system.
00:51So, leftover tropical moisture from Mario coming into the southwest.
00:55It's a pretty big story here in L.A.
00:56It doesn't mean it's going to be raining the whole time on Thursday, but there will be some showers.
01:00We have the light green for some showers down into parts of Los Angeles and especially Orange County, San Diego County.
01:08And then some thunderstorms a little bit farther east where there will be a little more heat out there to drive the bus.
01:13But look at the moisture flinging onshore and moving north, charging northward up into areas around Ventura County.
01:198 a.m. Thursday, some downpours will be out there.
01:21It's going to be a tough morning commute in L.A. and arguably in San Diego as well.
01:26And then through Friday, we'll have some more downpours, kind of expanding more inland and perhaps decreasing in L.A. by then.
01:33But over the next two days, especially through Thursday, half an inch to an inch of rain likely in the L.A. basin.
01:40One to two inches up into the high ground.
01:42And stepping ahead to Friday, thunderstorms increase into areas near Flagstaff, maybe even into areas around Las Vegas.
01:48Here's a quick look at some college football action in Salt Lake City with some nice warm gray weather.
