AccuWeather meteorologists are monitoring a tropical rainstorm that they say is likely to become Hurricane Gabrielle by Sept. 10.
Transcript
00:00We're now calling a tropical rainstorm out over the east-central Atlantic, and you can see it's moving west, so it's a long ways away from land, but after a long period of time with some very dry, dusty Saharan air, that's kind of lifted away to the north.
00:13There's a little more moisture present in this part of the Atlantic now, so we're not fighting the dry air quite like we had been, which was a nice protection for a while.
00:22So a tropical rainstorm that has yet to be named here, this will likely become Gabrielle, which is going to be moving to the west, and we'll likely see this become a tropical storm by the weekend.
00:34We'll be watching this move almost directly west for a time, and then it'll begin to pull a little north of due west, probably becoming a hurricane, and we're concerned that at the middle of next week we may have a Category 1 hurricane somewhere very close to Dominica in the Lesser Antilles, and then Thursday evening into areas around Puerto Rico.
00:50Now, we've got to keep an eye on this for the U.S. perhaps. If it comes far enough north, it'll be chewed apart by some wind shear. That could be a protection for us.
00:59If it stays farther south, that would allow for this to be a stronger storm that could enter kind of the landscape of the southeastern U.S. in about a week and a half to two weeks.
01:09Regardless, we're forecasting four to eight inches of rain at the middle of next week into San Juan, Puerto Rico with this storm, and this storm will have moderate impacts to lives and property here with heavy rain and mudslides.
01:18This could become Gabrielle by the weekend and continue to move west.
01:22By the way, we're also watching Tropical Storm Lorena.
01:24This one in the East Pacific is going to kind of drift and fade near the Cabo San Lucas area north of there, actually, over the Baja California Peninsula, but heavy rain is heading into western Mexico, and Damien and I have been talking about how this will contribute to the Texas flood woes as well.
01:39We're also watching Kiko could impact Hawaii the middle of next week.
01:42We're watching Kiko.
