Severe storms swept across the central U.S. on the afternoon of Sept. 16, hitting Nebraska especially hard.
Transcript
00:00Let's go to Waterloo, Iowa, live look.
00:02This has been a stormy spot on the map here, Anna.
00:05Yes, it sure has.
00:06This is one of the areas we've been watching.
00:09A line of thunderstorms move through, definitely causing some trouble.
00:13We've seen some severe thunderstorm warnings throughout kind of northern Iowa,
00:17but it's not the only place, right?
00:19When we look at radar as a whole, we've had plenty of severe thunderstorm warnings.
00:23At one point, I listed them on the map.
00:25We had at least five states with active severe thunderstorm warnings.
00:28Right now, we do still have several states with these warnings in place,
00:32but I'm going to focus in on, we'll start with Iowa
00:34and the storm system that we have going on here.
00:38So we've seen a couple of cells kind of merge together
00:41into more of a line of thunderstorms,
00:42but I'll turn the lightning off so that you can see.
00:45It's really two areas where we have some of these stronger storm systems
00:49triggering severe thunderstorm warnings.
00:51This one out until 6.30 central time.
00:53This one east of Mason City there into Chickasaw County, Iowa,
00:57out until 6.30 as well.
00:59Now, while Iowa is certainly getting some impacts here
01:02from the rain and thunderstorms,
01:04the main action has been into Nebraska.
01:06So let's go ahead and zoom in there,
01:09give you an idea of where things stand.
01:10So we talked about McCook, Nebraska here.
01:16This is where our tornado warning was.
01:17We've finally seen the severe thunderstorm warning
01:19mostly move out of that area,
01:22move a little bit farther to the east.
01:23A new one out, Red Willow County, Nebraska.
01:26So the same county, but a little bit farther to the east.
01:29This one out until 7 p.m.
01:30We do still have the flash flood warning.
01:32This one until 8 p.m.
01:34And you can see why when I turn the loop back on here,
01:36I'll click off the details of the warning.
01:38See the areas in red?
01:40This is just over the last hour.
01:41It was solidly over McCook,
01:44planted there for an hour or so.
01:47Now we're seeing things move their way to the east,
01:49but it is just slow moving.
01:51And that's why when I turn on our storm reports,
01:53we have at least two flash flood reports.
01:55But I said earlier, and I'll say it again,
01:57sometimes these take a little bit to show up
01:59in our storm reports.
02:00It takes a little while for them to be reported
02:02to the National Weather Service
02:03and then get entered into this database.
02:05So it's possible that there's more
02:08than just what we're seeing here.
02:09But this is at least three inches of ponding in a yard.
02:11This one coming in from Red Willow County there.
02:14Let's see if I can click on the other one
02:16because there's plenty of hail reports in the area too.
02:17So it's not letting me click
02:19on the other flash flooding report,
02:20but it is a similar situation.
02:22Plenty of large hail as well.
02:24We're seeing a golf ball sized hail,
02:26tennis ball sized hail on some of these
02:29and more hail is certainly possible.
02:31Now this is not the only area.
02:33Let's zoom out a little bit more here
02:35because into Colorado,
02:38there's another severe thunderstorm morning,
02:39but we're also starting to see more flash flooding
02:42as we go throughout the rest of the evening.
02:44Really all types of severe weather are possible here.
02:47So make sure you're staying weather aware
02:48throughout the central plains.
