00:00Brazil's Supreme Federal Court moves forward in the trial against former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro for the January 2023 coup attempt.
00:23In France, dozens of people were arrested this Wednesday during protests against the government's cuts.
00:30And the Israeli regime attacked another high-rise building in Gaza City as it continues its attempt to seize control of the Palestinian territory.
00:43Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from De Leso Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:00Brazil's Supreme Federal Court moves forward in the trial against former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro for the January 2023 coup attempt.
01:10On Wednesday, the sessions began for the final verdict that could convict the former Brazilian President and seven accomplices for coup plotting.
01:17Experts point out that there is sufficient evidence to declare the accused guilty. However, if there are not enough votes, the defense may file an appeal.
01:25Justices Alexandre de Moraes and Flavio Dino were the first of the five magistrates to vote, and both chose to convict Bolsonaro.
01:32If you receive the required votes, the former President could face up to 43 years in prison.
01:41And Argentina's President Javier Millet threatens to take legal action to oppose the emergency disability law after the Senate rejected the presidential veto.
01:49Millet decided to veto health-related laws on the grounds of insufficient financial resources. However, the disability emergency will remain in effect until December 31st, 2027, following the rejection of the veto issued last August.
02:03This law seeks to ensure that the state complies with the commitments made in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
02:09In this context, Millet insists on taking Congress's counter-proposal to court, which could exacerbate the political and economic crisis Argentina is experiencing.
02:22Argentina's emblematic Plaza de Mayo pyramid was the setting for the public classes in defense of the enactment of the university financing law.
02:30Faced with President Javier Millet's threat to veto the law, teachers and students at the University of Buenos Aires have called for open classes.
02:37Their aim is to urge the head of state to stop his attempt to defund and dismantle the national scientific and technological system.
02:44In addition, the university community is warning about the crisis in public education and demanding dignified salaries for professors.
02:51And on Tuesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the Argentine ambassador in Moscow, Enrique Ignacio Ferrer Vieira, for the unfounded allegations made by the Argentine Security Minister, Patricia Burrich, involving the Russian Federation.
03:09In an official statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed its rejection of the statements made by Patricia Burrich, who suggested that Russian intelligence could be involved in an illegal recording at the Argentine government headquarters.
03:19Moscow has described these statements as unacceptable and without any evidence, and therefore the ambassador will have to provide a detailed explanation of the allegations.
03:28This incident occurs in the context of the bribery scandal involving the director of the president's office and the president's sister, Karina Millet.
03:41And in Venezuela, the public ministry announced the arrest of 14 prosecutors involved in a corruption scheme. The action comes amid efforts to strengthen the national justice system.
03:51The public ministry identified inappropriate behavior within the Venezuelan state. Since September 7, authorities have been carrying out an operation against corrupt elements within the justice system, including judges and prosecutors.
04:03The initiative supported by the people led to the detention and indictment of 14 prosecutors in Carabobo, including the former prosecutor general of the state. This operation reaffirms the nation's commitment to guarantee responsible officials.
04:16And the Mexican government revealed a corruption scandal involving the Secretary of the Navy. It is the illegal fuel trafficking network known in Mexico as Huachicol.
04:31The body of Navy Captain Abraham José Jeremías Pérez Ramírez was found at the Port Protection Unit in Tamaulipas, northeastern Mexico. The officer had been accused of accepting bribes from a fuel trafficking network.
04:44This information was revealed when the government of President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the arrest of 14 individuals linked with the network on September 6. Those arrested included business people and public officials. They are all implicated in an investigation to the seizure of 10 million liters of fuel in the northeast of the country.
05:03A U.S. right political activist and founder of the conservative nonprofit organization Turning Point USA, Charlie Kirk, was shot Wednesday while speaking at Utah Valley University. The incident took place at 12.20 local time as Kirk was taking a question from a student. The conservative activist was reportedly shot in the neck while speaking in front of a crowd on the university campus.
05:2631-year-old Kirk, a close ally of President Trump, is a polarizing figure with millions of followers known for his controversial views on politics, COVID-19 and social issues. The incident comes amid rising political violence in the U.S., including attacks on public figures. In the aftermath, authorities inform a suspect has been arrested as investigations to learn the motive behind the attack continue.

06:10Welcome back. In France, dozens of people were arrested this Wednesday during protests against the government's cuts.
06:20The protests, called by the movement Block Everything, a spontaneous citizen initiative, took to the streets across the entire country.
06:27In its context, in different cities, blockades, gatherings, marches and various demonstrations were observed.
06:32Although the call for action proposes a total shutdown of the country, it is peaceful in nature.
06:37However, early in the morning, Paris police clashed with demonstrators resulting in nearly 75 arrests.
06:43President Emmanuel Macron has deployed 80,000 security agents on the streets to contain protesters who reject the austerity measures
06:50and accused the government of trying to make them pay for its war gains.
06:55It's not even about Beirut, Macron, all that. You know, tomorrow it could be anyone, they can be replaced, and there will be others who will carry out the same policies, always in favor of the powerful, the capitalists, the rich who lead us to war.
07:20Just look where we're headed. And now Licor knew who was Minister of the Armed Forces became Prime Minister. I think war has been declared.
07:28I sincerely hope that today's protest has a positive outcome. On top of that, we see that the current government is completely unstable.
07:38For about a year now, there's been a constant rotation of people in senior positions.
07:43There's total democratic denial, with prime ministers being appointed who don't reflect the majority of what was voted for.
07:49And so, it feels like all of this is spilling over.
07:56Meanwhile, President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Sébastien Lecornou as his new head of government.
08:03Lecornou's appointment comes after Francois Beirut formalized his resignation after losing the non-confidence motion in the National Assembly after only nine months as prime minister.
08:14The new prime minister is the only minister to have remained in government since President Emmanuel Macron was first elected in 2017,
08:22surviving countless reshoots and one early dissolution. In this sense, Sébastien will be responsible for proposing a new government to Macron,
08:31guided in defense of the country's political and institutional stability.
08:36We will also have to change, be more creative, sometimes more technical, more serious in the way we work with our opponents.
08:58I will have the opportunity to come back to this. We have just talked about it at length, but I will also say that we will need to make breaks, not only in form and method, but also in substance.
09:10Ladies and gentlemen, I am not going to make a grand speech. As the instability and the political and parliamentary crisis we are experiencing call for humility and sobriety.
09:23I would obviously like to thank the President of the Republic for his confidence in me. But above all, I would like to thank you for the support you are offering me, which I do not refuse and for good reason.
09:35Above all, I would like to salute the extraordinary courage with which you have defended your deeply held convictions as activists and citizens until this very last minute at Metinio.
09:46In other topics in Haiti, the transitional government once again opted for armed intervention to confront the criminal groups that control a large part of the country.
09:57Prime Minister Alex Didier-Philsaime announced the measure after a meeting with the United Nations Security Council, noting that it is key to recover the state authority and protect communities.
10:06The mission led by Kenya and with support from the United States arrived in Haiti in 2024 with nearly a thousand troops and is set to end this October as agreed with the United Nations.
10:16Not only did they fail to weaken the criminal groups, but aggravated the humanitarian crisis worse in the situation for the displaced population while avoiding to touch the weapons trafficking routes.
10:26And the University Hospital of Le Pen, located in Port-au-Prince, capital of Haiti, is close to shutting down services.
10:38On Tuesday, the Under-Secretary General of the United Nations for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, reported that the lack of funding could lead to the collapse of the hospital.
10:46The centre not only treats patients with chronic and acute illnesses, it is also the only one able to care victims of armed violence.
10:54Fletcher warned that without new sources of funding, the hospital could run out of resources and dismiss a significant number of these medical staff.
11:03This situation threatens to leave the most vulnerable population in the capital without essential medical care.
11:15And on Wednesday morning, the Cuban government informed of the nationwide disconnection of the power grid due to an unexpected output of the Antonio Guterres power station.
11:23Presided director of the power plant located in the Matanzas province, Ruben Campos, informed that the incident was triggered by a false signal of superheated stream that caused the plant boilers' automatic system to shut down.
11:35In the aftermath, the first Secretary of the Communist Party in the region, Mario Sabines, updated the issue, has been fixed, and the unit is ready to start operations as soon as possible.
11:44In this context, Q1 Prime Minister Manuel Marredo Cruz visited the National Charge Office, a department of the National Power Company, where he held talks with its director general and informed that immediate actions are being taken to advance in the recovery of the grid, especially with the creation of microsystems that will enable the gradual restoration of the service.
12:03And according to recent data from Costa Rica's National Institute of Statistics, 22.4% of children in the country live in poverty. Of those children, 11.6% live below the extreme poverty line.
12:18The Weta Caribbean region is the most affected with an extreme poverty rate of 20.8%. In contrast, the central region, the most developed area, has an extreme poverty rate of 8%. Many children in this region live in poor quality housing with inadequate services.
12:33This situation affects 820,633 children between the ages of 0 and 12, representing 15.8% of the total percent of the country's population, which is expressed in this way, the current situation perpetrates the cycle of poverty and limits their future opportunities.
12:56According to a report released on Tuesday by the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, one in 10 children and teenagers between the ages of 5 and 19, endure obesity. The research warned that 188 million children could suffer from serious diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular problems.
13:15Overconsumption of processed foods and exposure to fast food advertising are displacing healthy eating, affecting their growth and development.
13:23UNICEF emphasizes that children's diets do not only depend only on their choices, but also on environments where these foods predominate and the advertising that is presented in stores, schools and social media.

14:10The Israeli regime attacked another high-rise building in Gaza on Wednesday as it continues
14:21its attempt to seize control of the Palestinian territory.
14:24The strike on the Tipa II Tower makes it the seventh major building hit in recent weeks
14:28in the besieged urban center as part of the Tel Aviv's plan to capture the city and force
14:33the displacement of its one million residents.
14:36In this scenario, on Friday, the regime's military also struck a 12-story building Muz Taha Tower
14:42located on the western side of the city, claiming, without evidence, it was part of Hamas' infrastructure.
14:47The destruction of residential buildings seeks to render Gaza City uninhabitable for Israel
14:52to execute its legal occupation plan, another genocide of action that amounts to the ethnic
14:57cleansing of the Palestinian people.
14:59The Global Sumud Flotilla confirmed a new drone attack by Israel on another of its vessels,
15:08the ship El Alma, while it was moored in Tunisian waters.
15:12She was sailing under the British flag and suffered damage from a fire on its upper deck,
15:16and according to reports, the fire has now been extinguished and all passengers and crew
15:20are safe.
15:21This is the second attack of this type in two days, and comes amidst the escalation of Israeli
15:25aggression against the Palestinians in Gaza.
15:27However, the Sumud Global Flotilla remains steadfast in its peaceful journey to break Israel's
15:32illegal siege of the Palestinian enclave and maintain solidity with its people.
15:36Meanwhile, in Yemen, the Israeli forces struck a defense complex in an Arden neighborhood located
15:45in the middle of the capital, Sanaa.
15:47Florida reported a number of explosions on Wednesday due to approximately six airstrikes from the
15:51Saanese forces against the territory.
15:53In this context, the spokesman of the Yemeni Armed Forces, Jaya Sarri, said that the nation's
15:57defense keeps an air operation to bring down Israeli planes, which tried to hit the country,
16:03assuring that some of the regime's combat formations were forced to withdraw before carrying out their
16:08attack, those who were in most of the offensive.
16:11During his intervention, Sarri also condemned Tel Aviv's attack on Tuesday against the leaders
16:16of the Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, who were in Doha, Qatar, for ceasefire negotiations.
16:26And vessels from the Global Humanitarian Sumud Flotilla set sail from Tunisia heading for the
16:30Gaza Strip.
16:32With at least 300 activists on board, the International Flotilla will join more than 50 boats from 44
16:37countries aiming to break the Israeli blockade of the Palestinian territories.
16:41Despite the weather unsabotage by Israel, participants continued their humanitarian mission to help
16:45Palestinian families affected by violence and starvation.
16:53The Russian Foreign Ministry denounced the missile attacks by Israel against Qatar, describing
16:57them as a step leading to further escalation of violence in the Middle East.
17:01According to this authority, the attacks undermined international efforts to reach a peaceful
17:05solution to the Hamas-Israel conflict, especially when Qatar is acting as a key mediator.
17:11The Russian government considers these actions represent a serious violation of international
17:16law and sovereignty of an independent state.
17:19In this context, it calls on all parties involved to act responsibly and avoid actions that could
17:24escalate the tension in the genocide against the Palestinian people.
17:29Also on Wednesday, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, presented a
17:36series of measures to the European Parliament in response to the escalating genocide perpetrated
17:40against the population of Gaza by the Israeli occupation forces.
17:44Among the related and mild proposals is the imposition of sanctions against Israeli ministers
17:50considered extremists and against violent settlers in the West Bank.
17:54She also suggested suspended bilateral support for Israel and stopping all payments in these
17:58areas, assuring that these actions would not affect work with Israeli civil society.
18:04In addition, Wanderlein proposed a partial suspension of the association agreement with regard
18:08to trade matters and also described the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip as unacceptable, emphasizing
18:14the need for a decisive response to the current crisis.
18:22U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders harshly criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and
18:26urged Washington to end its military support for Israel.
18:29In a message posted on Tuesday on his ex-account, Sanders asserted that Netanyahu's extremist
18:34government is completely out of control.
18:36Not only are they starving children in Gaza, they are now breaking international law by dropping
18:40bombs on Qatar, a U.S. security partner.
18:44And the Nepali army has ordered people in Kathmandu to stay home amid mass unrest gripping the capital,
19:00following a wave of deadly protest.
19:02An indefinite curfew was imposed to supposedly normalize the situation in the capital after mass
19:06unrest so demonstrators set fire to several government buildings and forced Prime Minister KP Char
19:12Maoli to resign.
19:14The protests, triggered by a social media ban, have escalated since Monday when security forces
19:19killed 19 demonstrators and injured hundreds.
19:22Tens of thousands filled Kathmandu streets on Monday and Tuesday as the protests expanded
19:28to target corruption and unemployment in the country's most violent tumult in decades.
19:32Until now, Gen Z had only expressed themselves on social media.
19:43They had not taken to the streets.
19:45Now that social media has been shut down, those who relied on online businesses are in serious
19:50trouble.
19:51We have realized that we need to raise our voices.
19:53We need to take to the streets.
19:55The Gen Z generation must speak out against the disorder that this government and its leaders
20:00have caused.
20:04We gathered here against the social media ban.
20:07It was triggered by the ban.
20:09But the reason behind the movement today is not just that.
20:13We are here against institutionalized corruption.
20:16And we are also here to question where our tax money goes, as simple as that.
20:21And our right to free speech has been snatched away.
