00:46Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Resus Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:51We begin with the news.
00:57In Argentina, the State Workers Association issued a statement denouncing the existence of
01:09overpricing and possible bribes in the comprehensive medical care program.
01:13A journalistic research showed that the comprehensive medical care program overcharges for the purchase
01:18of intraocular lenses for the retirees' health insurance program, paying laboratories five to ten times more than market prices.
01:27In response to this new corruption scandal, the Association of State Workers denounced that overpricing has been proven,
01:33while the investigation highlights that this process began after the implementation of a new purchasing system
01:38that aims to improve logistics starting in August this year.
01:47And the following recent corruption scandals involving Javier Millet's government that the Argentine justice system
01:53has banned the circulation of audio recordings of Karina Millet allegedly on the grounds that the opposition
01:58is planning a destabilization campaign. While the Argentine security minister is calling for journalists
02:03Jorge Real and Mauro Federico to be raided, the Argentine people assert that the government is pursuing
02:09a totalitarian policy of censorship in the wake of the corruption scandals at the National Disability Agency
02:15and the Argentine comprehensive medical care program. Social unions are committed to exposing these actions
02:21actions that the executive is trying to hide and are demanding justice through popular mobilization.
02:31The Supreme Federal Court of Brazil began the verdict and sentencing phase of the trial
02:35of the former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro and seven former officials from his administration
02:40on charges of attending a coup in January 2023. The trial against the former President takes place
02:46in the First Chamber of the Federal Court. Also on trial, our former commander of the Navy,
02:50Almer Garnier Santos, former Minister of Justice, Anderson Torres, and former advisor to Bolsonaro,

03:04Prosecutor Alexandre de Moraes. The trial is expected to continue until September 12. If found guilty,
03:10Bolsonaro and his accomplices could face up to 43 years in prison.
03:19The former head of State of Brazil, together with seven of his former officials, is accused of leading
03:26or being part of an armed criminal organization that attacked the Democratic rule of law.
03:30They have also been charged with causing serious damage for violence and threats, as well as damaging
03:35protected federal property.
03:42And in Peru, the National Superior Court ordered former President Pedro Kuczynski to stand trial for alleged money laundering in connection with receiving bribes from the Brazilian construction company,
03:56The Breach. The preliminary investigation court decided that the case would go to trial, formalizing the accusation of money laundering
04:03disguised as payments for consulting services during Kuczynski's administration as minister of former President Alejandro Toledo.
04:11With this decision, the investigation that the Prosecutor's Office has been carrying out since 2017 concludes.
04:18The former Peruvian President remains prohibited from leaving the country after three years under house arrest due to his 86-year-old age.
04:30And on Monday, Guyana held presidential and legislative elections that were crucial in defining this political and economic course in a context marked by the oil boom.
04:40More than 750,000 citizens were eligible to vote in about 2,790 polling stations distributed throughout the country, most of which is covered by tropical rainforests.
04:51The Electoral Commission announced that preliminary results would not be known until next Thursday.
04:57Observers from the European Union, the Organization of American States, CARICOM, and the Chicago Center described the election as utterly and transparent.
05:06The day passed peacefully, although there were reports of low turnout in several areas and logistical difficulties.
05:13The Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro denounced the deployment of U.S. warships and a nuclear submarine in the Caribbean Sea targeting Venezuela.
05:26The President described the U.S. military mobilization as the greatest threat in the history of Latin America.
05:31Also, the head of state asserted that the military maneuver is an extravagant, unjustifiable, immoral, absolutely criminal, and bloody threat.
05:39Maduro emphasized that Washington has wanted to move toward what they call maximum pressure and responded to this case by declaring maximum preparation for the defense of Venezuela.
05:50He also assured that the United States has staged a farce and warned President Donald Trump that the extremist mafia in Miami has taken political power in the White House
05:59and has influenced U.S. foreign policy through the State Department.
06:03And during the CELAC summit, Venezuela denounced the military deployment carried out by the United States in the Caribbean.
06:14According to Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Hill, the growing U.S. military deployment in Caribbean waters is a serious threat to regional peace and a flagrant violation of the status of peace undeclared by CELAC in 2014.
06:26The high Venezuelan official said that Venezuela faces an unprecedented situation in terms of regional security with the presence of eight U.S. warships in the Caribbean Sea,
06:35with more than 1,200 missiles on board and nearly 4,200 troops strained and ready for an invasion.
06:42He also warned of the possible presence in the area of a nuclear submarine, which not only violated the 2014 Son of Peace Declaration, but also the Treaty of Catedralco.
