00:00Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro inaugurated Wednesday in Caracas a monument marking the
00:1780th anniversary of China's victories over Japanese aggression during the Second World War.
00:22The Argentinian government backed down on a decree that limited the right to strike after it was
00:32declared unconstitutional by the courts and Israel has begun to mobilize more than 60,000
00:42reservists for a new offensive against the Gaza Strip. Hello welcome to From the South I'm Alejandra
00:51Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:04Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro inaugurated Wednesday in Caracas a monument marking the
01:1080th anniversary of China's victories over Japanese aggression during the Second World War.
01:15The event was also attended by Venezuelan high government officials and the Chinese
01:21ambassador to the Bolivarian nation, Lan Hu. During the event, Maduro highlighted the civic,
01:27military and police fusion in Venezuela and the nation's relations with China. The president
01:32also condemned imperialism's repeated attacks on South American country and reaffirmed Venezuela's
01:38peaceful but firm stance in the face of foreign aggressions. On the other hand,
01:42Ambassador Lan Hu highlighted the deep friendly relations between the peoples of Venezuela and
01:49China and China and their shared commitment to oppose fascism and defend peace worldwide.
01:54We have to study what happened to the Chinese people from 1931 to 1945 and how they were surprised by a horrible,
02:13criminal invasion, the methods of rape and torture that remained in a dark legend forever and how the
02:21Chinese people resisted by defending their history, their identity, their land, and how the great
02:28helmsman, Mao Zedong, with the Communist Party of China and the People's Liberation Army managed to unite the
02:37greatest Chinese national alliance, the greatest Chinese national union, of all political, social,
02:46historical, and religious sectors of China, to create what is commemorated as the great victory of the
02:54Chinese people, of the Chinese Republic, against the fascists, against the criminals. Today, 80 years later,
03:04that victory is commemorated. Thanks to the unity of all China, they saved their culture and history,
03:11and recovered more than half of their territory, which they had lost in this criminal, colonial,
03:18savage war waged by the then Japanese empire. President Nicolás Maduro also affirmed that Venezuela
03:30will remain firm in peace and in full defense of its national sovereignty in the face of new
03:35aggressions of US imperialism against the South American nation. Today, imperialism launches a new
03:43attack, not the first, nor will be the last, just another attack, and Venezuela is on its feet.
03:58And I say to you Venezuela will continue to be on its feet, with calmness, with determination,
04:05with unwavering faith in the victory, and in peace, and with all its people, its military
04:13forces, its police, united, all across the nation. We are good people, we are people who love peace,
04:22but let them know that we are also fierce warriors when they meddle with our land, with our history,
04:29and with our rights. This land belongs to the Venezuelan people, and there won't be any
04:41traitor or empire that can touch or desecrate our holy land that the liberators beproofed to us.
04:51For his part, China's ambassador to Venezuela, who thanked the Venezuelan government and people for
04:56the monument commemorating the 80th anniversary of China's victory in the war of resistance against
05:01Japan. Today is a very special day for the Chinese people and for the people of the world.
05:16On this very day 80 years ago, the Chinese people finally achieved great victory in the war of
05:21resistance against the betrayal of the fascist military forces of Japan and brought the Second
05:27World War to a complete end. On behalf of the Chinese government and people, I would like to
05:37thank President Nichols Majuro Moros and the government and people of Venezuela for the construction of this
05:42commemorative monument to this great world victory. In other news, the US organization Code Pink condemned the
05:51U.S. military deployment in the Caribbean Sea and its aggression against Venezuela. In a statement,
05:56Code Pink said, while the White House wastes at least US$7 million a day on reckless military operations,
06:04it is drastically cutting funds for precisely what could address drug addiction in the country,
06:10medical care, treatment programs and education. They also emphasized, we refuse to allow Washington to
06:17drag Latin America and the Caribbean back into an era of gunboat, diplomacy and imperial control.
06:24The war machine must be stopped. Finally, they emphasized, Venezuela has the right to sovereignty.
06:31The Caribbean has the right to peace. We demand an independent investigation, an end to the U.S.
06:37military build-up in the region and full accountability for any violations of international law.
06:47Mexico and the United States reached a security agreement Wednesday based on mutual respect,
06:52territorial integrity and collaboration without subordination. The announcement was made during a
06:58press conference by Mexican Foreign Minister Juan RamĂłn de la Fuente after President Claudia Sheinbaum met with
07:06U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in the Mexican capital. De la Fuente emphasized that the meeting
07:12focused on security issues to design strategies against crime based on principles of respect for
07:19both nations' sovereignty. The Mexican top diplomat highlighted the importance of combating drug trafficking
07:26while respecting the principles of self-determination without subordination.
07:41As we have said, we have been working with the State Department for some time now,
07:47and today we have reached a very good agreement to shape and follow through with a cooperation program
07:54based on four fundamental principles, the unrestricted respect for territorial sovereignty,
08:06shared responsibility, mutual trust, and coordinated collaboration without subordination.
08:18As Secretary Rubio has already pointed out, in order to follow up on the agreements reached,
08:31we decided to establish a high-level coordination mechanism.
08:37Following the U.S. attacks in the Caribbean, the Mexican foreign minister stated that his country
08:43bases its foreign policy relations on respect for international law.
08:50Mexico's position on this issue is very clear. It is based first and foremost on our constitutional
08:58principles of foreign policy, which are clearly defined in Article 89 of our Constitution,
09:05legal attention on respect for international law and current international conventions and treaties on the matter to which Mexico is a signatory.
09:16The European border
09:19Minister Iban Hill thanked the Mexican government Wednesday for its firm stance against the
09:25U.S. interference in the sovereignty of Latin American and Caribbean countries.
09:28In an official statement, the Bolivarian foreign minister said,
09:32I want to recognize and congratulate the government of Mexico for upholding the principles of
09:38international law, legality and the vision of Latin America as a zone of peace within
09:43the context of the fight against organized crime and illicit drug trafficking.
09:49This is a worthy example of the firm and sovereign position characterizing a region which Mexico has
09:56exemplarily represented. All this despite Marco Rubio's obsession with creating intrigues
10:03and promoting falsehoods in our region, whose narrative is completely debunked by the respect
10:09and integrity defended by our peoples. Congratulations President Claudia Sheinbaum.

10:39Welcome back to From the South. The Argentinian government backed down on a decree that limited the
10:51right to strike after it was declared unconstitutional by the courts. The court ruling also included the
10:57government's decree that sought to privatize the National Highway Administration, the Industrial
11:03Technology National Institute, INTI, the Agricultural Technology National Institute, INTA and several other
11:12state-owned entities which had been rejected by Congress. The Millais administration has expressed its
11:18intention to deregulate the economy and reduce the size of the state in order to lower inflation on the
11:26state-owned entities. Costa Rica registered three new structural fires in three hours, raising alarms among fire departments.
11:40Firefighters responded to three fires in different parts of the country and the blazes completely destroyed the properties where they broke out. According to statistics from the Costa Rica Fire Department, on average, the institution handles one structural fire
11:58every eight hours. So far this year, fire authorities recorded a total of 665 similar incidents.
12:28In Cuba, the community project La Muñeca Negra aims to highlight black identity values through art workshops. From Havana, correspondent Melinda
12:50Los Santos tells us more details in a new episode of The Cuban Way.
12:56In the popular Havana neighborhood of La Lisa, we find a project with decades of history. La Muñeca Negra, or the black doll, dates back to the 80s and has always worked towards one objective, highlighting the value of black culture through art while strengthening community ties.
13:18It is a place to rescue tradition, to rescue culture, to rescue identity. We try to take it to young people, older adults, to children who are our continuity. We want them to know where they come from, to know where they are going.
13:38An art instructor by training, Margarita started the project in 1980, creating black dolls that were toys for children and ornaments or souvenirs for adults.
13:49The workshops began with grandmothers from the community who met to learn the different techniques and share experiences.
13:56Over time, they expanded to incorporate spaces for children seeking to create awareness through art.
14:02This is the moment I enjoy the most, when I am in front of them working, when I am in front of the grandmothers working, when I am in front of the parents of the children who were also my students.
14:15Work materials evolved to adapt to each context, and Muñeca Negra discovered in recycling and the use of organic material a way to keep the project alive in the most difficult moments.
14:27In this way, the initiative became a workspace that allowed women in the community to earn an income from their art while they also showcased key elements of Cuban black culture.
14:38It is a community project turned into an economic initiative, but without losing the values of the popular solidarity economy, of community work as such.
14:53And it is important for women to value themselves.
14:57These spaces for collaboration, solidarity among women were a key element in the growth of Muñeca Negra,
15:03which today continues to promote a form of popular economy rooted in solidarity and feminism.
15:10Feminism hand in hand, to try to empower women.
15:16But women's empowerment is not only economic.
15:19It is political, it is cultural, it is social, and everything must go hand in hand.
15:25Who else but ourselves to solve our problems?
15:30We are close, we are neighbors, we know the problems we have, and therefore it is necessary to create different projects based on this one,
15:40to solve these problems that the community faces today, that our country is facing.
15:46What was once Margarita's dream is now a reality in different neighborhoods of Havana.
15:51In each workshop, art manages to capture the identity of a community, while at the same time opening up an economic possibility and restoring confidence in collaborative work.
16:03You learn a lot of things here, it's very nice.
16:07And you reuse things that are no longer used by other people.
16:10To teach, to continue, to maintain those values.
16:17It is difficult but not impossible.
16:20It also heals, it is a healing of the environment, because the environment is everything.
16:25It is the world in which we live.
16:28That is what I would like to remain, not only among us, but that everyone who has any of our works, that it remains that they say this work was done by the women, by the people, by everyone that has been a part of the Muñeca Negra project.
16:48This is their work.
16:50I believe this is being done, and I hope it continues.

17:19Welcome back to From the South.
17:47Israel has begun to mobilise more than 60,000 reservists for a new offensive against the Gaza Strip.
17:54The Zionist regime intends to mobilise nearly 130,000 soldiers as part of the so-called Swords of Iran war declared against the Palestinian enclave since October 2023.
18:08However, hundreds of reservists have said that they will not participate in the military offensive due to the complexity of the operation
18:15and the risk of Israeli hostages being killed during attack.
18:19Meanwhile, thousands of people gathered in the vicinity of the National Parliament in occupied Jerusalem to demand the end of the Israeli operation.
18:35In Palestine, Israeli strikes in the last hours left at least 40 Palestinians killed across the Gaza Strip.
18:42Health authorities reported that the victims were transferred to the nearest hospital for medical attention.
18:49Authorities warned that several Palestinians remain trapped under the rubble,
18:53while rescue teams are facing difficulties in reaching the targeted area due to Israeli blockade.
19:00To date, more than 63,557 civilians have been killed, most of them women and children.
19:08Also, Palestine condemned the international community's inability to stop Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip.
19:18Through a statement, the Palestinian foreign ministry urged countries to take the necessary action to stop Zionist attacks in the occupied West Bank.
19:27The authorities reiterated its call for global action to implement the two-state solution and thus end Israeli war crimes in the coastal enclave.
19:36In addition, the foreign ministry denounced the theft of an economic suffocation suffered by the Palestinian people,
19:44which attacks the basics of life, such as education and health.
19:48Germany forces launched missiles at the Israeli capital in response to the assassination of Germany Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahawi.
20:01Military spokesman, Brigadier General Jarja Saray, stated that the missiles targeted strategic objectives of the Israeli enemy in Tel Aviv.
20:11The attack came one day after another Yemeni offensive against various targets in Israel and a ship in the Red Sea.
20:19As promised, after Israel killed the Prime Minister, Yemen intensifies the launch of missiles and drones,
20:26both towards the occupied territories and against ships linked to that country in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.
20:33In other information, in Jakarta, members of trade unions, student groups and civil society organizations in Indonesia protested Wednesday
20:45in the streets of the capital and other cities for the 10th consecutive day.
20:49Protests against government measures have left so far 10 people dead, nearly 4,000 protesters detained and dozens injured.
20:57Trade unions and students are demanding improvements in working conditions and funding for educational programs, among other urgent needs.
21:06Recent reforms and scandals involving the political class have generated widespread popular rejection,
21:13which has been channeled through these mass demonstrations that are spreading across various cities.
21:18And in Portugal, at least 15 people died and 18 others were injured in the capital, Lisbon,
21:28after the iconic Gloria Funicular Railway derailed and crashed into a building.
21:34According to the authorities, five of the wounded were in serious conditions, while the remaining 13, including a minor, suffered minor injuries.
21:44The funicular connects the Restauradores Square to the Jardin de Sao Pedro de Alcantara in the bar in the high neighborhood.
21:54Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro expressed condolences for the victims and said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.
22:04On the other hand, the Major of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, announced three days of mourning for the victims of the crash.
