00:00Hello, yes, Londoners need free public transport to reduce inequality and get polluting cars off the road, Transport for London has now been told.
00:12The Capital's tube network is already considered the most expensive of any major global city, with fares set to rise by above inflation until 2030.
00:25This has prompted concerns that ordinary Londoners are avoiding tube travel due to soaring costs, potentially increasing the number of vehicles on the road in the capital as well.
00:38Now, TfL says it is mostly funded by passenger fares compared with other countries which receive larger subsidies from central governments.
00:50The removal of passenger fares would require billions of pounds to be invested and found from elsewhere.
00:58TfL made £5.24 billion from passenger fares in the year previously and expected to take £5.7 billion this year.
01:09The transport body got £1.6 billion in income from advertising and the ULEZ scheme as well as £2.7 billion from government grants last year too.
01:19A single tube journey in London cost between £2.50 and £3.80 on Oyster cards and contactless between zones during peak and off-peak times.
01:31Tube fares are capped at £8.90 a day for Zone 1 and £16.30 from 1 to 6 and then £81.60 for a week is the cap as well.
01:43Cash is not accepted on London buses or trams where fares start at £1.75 and are capped at £5.25 per day for adults.
01:52Now earlier this month the House of Commons Transport Committee proposed that everyone aged under 22 in England should be given a free bus pass to help them get into work and education.
02:06There will be rolling strike action now as well across the London Underground on Friday the 5th of September for seven days the RMT union has announced.
02:17The union claimed that transport bosses refuse to engage with them over pay fatigue management and extreme shift patterns and a reduction in the working week.
02:29RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey has said that fatigue and extreme conditions and shift rotations as well are serious issues impacting on members, their health, their wellbeing and they haven't been adequately addressed in years by the LU management.
02:46A Transport for London spokesperson has responded to those by saying we urge the RMT to put fair affordable pay offers forward for members to continue to engage in talks.
