00:00Since the start of the year in Liverpool, 436 vehicles have refused to stop for school crossings.
00:08Now Liverpool City Council is taking decisive action ahead of the new school year to improve road safety around schools
00:14by introducing mobile CCTV cameras at key school crossing patrol sites.
00:20This initiative aims to tackle the growing issue of drive-thrus,
00:24incidents where drivers illegally fail to stop when directed by a school crossing patrol officer.
00:29The cameras, which will be rotated between the city's worst affected locations,
00:33are part of a broader campaign to educate drivers about their legal responsibilities and deter dangerous behaviour.
00:40Footage captured will be used as evidence for prosecution when necessary.
00:45It is illegal and incredibly dangerous not to stop when instructed by a school crossing patrol.
00:50These patrols are there to protect some of our most vulnerable road users,
00:54children and families crossing the road to and from school.
00:59These patrols are a vital part of ensuring children can travel to school safely,
01:08encouraging active travel such as walking and helping to reduce the number of vehicles on roads.
01:14Their presence should be respected and supported by all road users.
01:18The Road Traffic Regulation Act of 1984 makes it an offence not to stop when signalled by a school crossing patrol.
01:25Penalties can include a fine of up to £1,000, three penalty points and even disqualification from driving.
01:34This initiative is in addition to the school streets restrictions,
01:37which will see up to 50 locations across Liverpool getting traffic camera enforcement
01:41to either reduce or calm motorised traffic.
