00:00Hello there, London. Welcome to your latest transport roundup. I should have done a weather roundup. I'd have known to bring an umbrella.
00:06Anyway, speed limits on London roads in London could be cut to 20 miles per hour after research said that it helped reduce collisions to pedestrians and cyclists.
00:18More than half of the capital's roads have been limited to 20 miles per hour since 2023.
00:22And that was an increase in 20 mile per hour zones and Transport for London's red route network as well on some of the main roads in the capital.
00:32Now, research commissioned by Transport for London on the safety benefits of 20 miles per hour has given the green light for more speed cuts,
00:40especially with evidence that 20 mile per hour limits have not increased congestion, but that has reduced collisions by 35 percent and reduced casualties as well,
00:51where those 20 miles per hour zones have been introduced.
00:56In particular, children are even less likely to be hurt with a 50 percent reduction and a 75 percent reduction in fatalities.
01:04Will Norman, the mayor's walking and cycling commissioner, said this compelling new analysis shows clearly that lowering speed in roads in the capital is saving lives.
01:16Elsewhere, Transport for London could be bringing back the original Routemaster sound to indicate when a bus is about to depart.
01:24The old ding ding sound is also being trialled with other sounds to see which would act as the best prompt for customers to hold onto the handrails or stay seated until the bus has stopped.
01:36The iconic Routemaster bus was known for its red colour, open rear platform and its hold tight belt.
01:43It was phased out nearly 20 years ago now in 2005.
01:47It is hoped that the sound will reduce the number of injuries, particularly to older customers on buses who may remember the sound from years gone by.
01:55Now, slips, trips and falls are the most common cause of injuries on buses in London, accounting for around 71 percent of all injuries, Transport for London has said.
02:07The small scale trial has now started on some bus routes around Golders Green in North London.
02:12And the second part of the trial is taking place this week on Route 94, travelling between Piccadilly Circus and Acton Green.
02:20On the buses where the sound trial is being played, there will be teams on board the buses to gather feedback from customers.
02:29And Transport for London has confirmed it will be withdrawing sections of two of its bus services in central London.
02:36The 30 and the 205 routes will both be reconstructed between Paddington and Marble Arch and Euston,
02:43while additional journeys will be added for the 27 in a bid to mitigate the changes.
02:49TfL's decision follows a public consultation concluded earlier in the year into the potential changes to those routes.
