00:00An FSU legend, of course, and played a number of seasons in the NFL.
00:05Went to the Giants in the draft.
00:07I don't know.
00:07I've probably mentioned before, he was drafted by the Brewers right out of high school.
00:12Chose to go to college and then got drafted by the Yankees out of college, but chose to
00:18play professional football.
00:20So two-sport athlete.
00:22Danny comes to us courtesy of BetOnline.
00:24Check out BetOnline.ag for updated college football playoff win totals and conference
00:31championships and Heisman odds and college football week one lines.
00:37We have been NFL intensive on today's show, cut down day and just NFL intensive.
00:44So I want to talk a little college football here with Danny and I'll start with Miami and
00:49Notre Dame.
00:49So does Miami upset them Sunday night at Hard Rock?
00:54How do they do it if they do?
00:56First of all, I want to say, I'm just glad that we're on Zoom this time.
01:00This is the first time we've actually been on camera and I like to be able to look you
01:03guys in the eyes when you insult my alma mater and you take all these pot shots at me, just
01:07kind of see the reactions we get so we can feel like men and we can look each other in
01:11the eye.
01:12Now that you say that, I remember last year you spent most of the season taking notes,
01:16right?
01:16Weren't you taking a lot of notes?
01:17I did and I still, I got a lot of receipts that I got in my back pocket.
01:23I got a tow truck in the back where I had to haul them all in there.
01:28He's got a lot of receipts from last season.
01:31I got a lot of receipts that I'm going to be pulling.
01:34Hopefully I can pull them out this year.
01:36It might take a year.
01:36I don't know.
01:37We'll have to see, but I'm going to save them.
01:39I'm petty as it gets.
01:41And I will remember every one of you guys who called out my Florida state Seminoles for
01:46that one, but back to your question at hand about the Hurricanes pulling off this upset.
01:51So I think that the way they pull the upset is the first of all, I think it's pretty simple
01:55on the defensive side of the ball.
01:57And I'm excited to see what Corey Hetherton has planned.
01:59The new defensive coordinator, because Jeremiah love the running back for Notre Dame is probably
02:04if he's not the best running back in college football, there aren't many guys that are going
02:08to challenge him for that title.
02:09He is a dynamic runner of the football for what the Fighting Irish want to do.
02:14And they're going to want to lean on him because they're starting a guy in CJ Carr who hasn't
02:19played at all for Notre Dame.
02:22And so they've got an inexperienced quarterback playing on the road.
02:26Notre Dame is going to want to neutralize the crowd, make the game kind of boring, establish
02:30the line of scrimmage.
02:31And can Miami, with the revamped defense, can they pressure him, fluster him, shut down that
02:37run?
02:37And that, to me, is the pretty simplest form of the game plan where you don't have to rely
02:42too much on the offense as it kind of finds its legs.
02:44Because I do think Notre Dame's defense is one of the better defenses in the country as
02:48well.
02:49It's Marcus Freeman, a defensive-minded coach.
02:51He's always had it.
02:52It's been something they've been able to ride.
02:55Last year, they rode it all the way to the championship game.
02:57They had a more dynamic quarterback in Riley Leonard, who was able to scramble around and
03:00make some plays.
03:02But defense is going to be pretty physical.
03:03And that'll be a big challenge for Miami's offensive line, which is supposed to be their
03:07strength.
03:08But I do think the best way for them to win the game is to have a defensive standout type
03:12of performance that hopefully they get much better play than they did last season.
03:16And Danny, gambling-wise and game-play-wise, we can talk about it both with this one, I
03:22think it's going to be low-scoring.
03:23Notre Dame, top-five defense, top-10 in scoring in total.
03:27And then last year, Minnesota, with Heatherman, they were a top-10 defense in scoring in total.
03:33So I'm looking at a 17-13 game.
03:36Hawk wants a 47-49 game.
03:39Over-runner's 49-and-a-half.
03:41They didn't make it out of nothing.
03:43It's 49-and-a-half.
03:44I don't think they get to 49-and-a-half.
03:47It's still...
03:47There's actually been money coming on the under, too, because it was at 50-and-a-half not that
03:51long ago.
03:52And I think smart football minds like me and you, Crowder, we understand what type of
03:57game is going to unfold.
03:58I think it will be uglier and lower scoring.
04:00You've got Carson Beck with who knows who he's throwing to at wide receiver with the
04:04amount of production they lost.
04:06I think Mario wants to establish the line of scrimmage, too, wants to create that run game.
04:10And I do think Notre Dame is going to struggle to put up points.
04:13So I'm with you, Channing.
04:14I do think my favorite play in the game is under the total of that 49-and-a-half.
04:19So I think it's going to be a lower score in the game.
04:21And that I like better.
04:22Like, if you're going to bet the Canes, I think it's probably best just to take the
04:25money line and just say, you know what?
04:27They win the game outright, which wouldn't surprise me.
04:29But my favorite play in the game is the under, because I do think it's going to be a lower
04:33scoring game where...
04:34And we saw that a little bit in Week 0, especially the game in Ireland.
04:38The first half was really ugly.
04:40Nobody tackles anymore in practice.
04:42Nobody goes live.
04:44So teams are trying to figure out what they're doing offensively.
04:46They're kind of not on the same page.
04:48You see a lot of drop balls, missed completions.
04:51I think it could be an uglier game early, and then they find to figure things out late.
04:55But I think overall, it's going to be more of a defensive slugfest.
04:58You mentioned Cam Ward.
04:59Excuse me.
05:00You mentioned Carson Beck.
05:01Can he replicate what Cam Ward did?
05:03I'm not saying he's going to be the number one overall draft pick.
05:05But Crowder, even the last year, he was kind of down on Cam Ward, to be fair.
05:10And that didn't necessarily work out great for him.
05:12But Crowder just feels like Carson Beck isn't that dude.
05:16And I think, for the most part, we have high hopes for him down here.
05:20I know we have to figure out who exactly his weapons are going to be.
05:23And we'll probably find out Week 1, 2, and then with that Florida game.
05:26But can Carson Beck replicate what he did two seasons ago against ACC defenses, mostly?
05:31That's the biggest question mark for this team.
05:35You know, because Carson Beck, a year ago now, was a favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.
05:40He was projected to be a top-five pick.
05:43And then he goes out and struggles this season, gets hurt, and then kind of rewrite history.
05:47And now we are where we are with Carson Beck for the Miami Hurricanes.
05:50My big concern, so it's going to look completely different, right?
05:53He's a completely different style of quarterback than Cam Ward was.
05:56Cam, you know, a little bit more shoots from the hip.
05:58He can play from within the pocket.
06:00But he had, like, think of his signature plays when he's rolling around and he's making plays
06:04outside the pocket and he's buying time and he sits back there in the pocket and just waits
06:08and waits and waits.
06:09Carson Beck will be more on rhythm within the system.
06:12And he can run, too.
06:13He is pretty mobile.
06:14My thing is kind of what I think Channing feels as well.
06:18Cam Ward was a guy that led that locker room.
06:22Like, the players wanted to play for him.
06:24They had, he had this infectious confidence that I think permeated that locker room.
06:28The offense became so unstoppable.
06:31It didn't matter if he threw a crazy interception across his body for a pick six.
06:35They still looked at him and had belief, he can bring us back.
06:38He's a dog.
06:38Like, we can follow this guy.
06:40The thing that concerned me about Carson Beck, there's two things.
06:43One, Georgia let him walk out the door.
06:45Like, Georgia can spend with anybody.
06:48So if they really wanted Carson Beck, they could have afforded to keep him back.
06:52The second thing was the reaction from the locker room, from his own teammates.
06:57When he went down, there was almost like this excitement of having Gunnar Stockton,
07:02of having somebody different under center.
07:04And some of the players' comments in that playoff game were like,
07:07we're going to be better off without Carson Beck.
07:09And I don't think it meant from a talent perspective.
07:13They meant from a leadership perspective.
07:15Like, Gunnar Stockton, those players played with more enthusiasm and more excitement
07:19than they did with Carson Beck.
07:21For whatever reason, he didn't resonate as a true leader in that locker room.
07:26And I've even talked to some Georgia people who said he wasn't really missed at all.
07:29Like, they weren't upset that he left for any reason.
07:32And then he's made some mistakes off the field.
07:34I think life is a series of IQ questions, like an IQ test.
07:38And he's failed some of those and some of the decisions he made off the field,
07:42relationship-wise, getting busted on Snapchat, some stuff that's not very smart.
07:46Like, we've all figured out ways to not get caught.
07:49And when you do in such a public way, it kind of is an IQ test for me.
07:53And so I worry about some of the decisions he made off the field.
07:56He is talented.
07:57And then all of this, we haven't even talked about him coming back from major elbow surgery.
08:01So there's a lot of question marks.
08:03But he's still got the talent.
08:05And I was talking to Joe Z a couple weeks ago.
08:08He was telling me that he's firing lasers out there at practice, which doesn't surprise me.
08:12But I will remind you, when he was lighting up defenses in the SEC,
08:16he did have Brock Bowers and he had Lad McConkie, two guys that are crushing it now in the NFL.
08:22Lad McConkie, much more so than anybody thought.
08:24Brock Bowers, we all knew, was going to be good.
08:26But he had some weapons to work with when he was at Georgia.
08:29Somebody's got to emerge in that position for the Canes.
08:32I'm taking notes this time.
08:33Yeah, take them.
08:34Write them down.
08:34I hope you took the under.
08:38I hope you took the under so he can make some money.
08:40He's up there taking that Heisman Trophy and looking around.
08:45I'm going to have a whole page of notes from Danny Connell here.
08:48We're going to find out in the first month of the season.
08:51You know, like I got a ton of heat from some Hurricanes fans.
08:54I was asked on my podcast, they were like, give bold predictions.
08:57When I hear that, I'm like, all right.
08:59I start salivating because I'll go bold.
09:01Like, I don't care.
09:02Like, it's a bold prediction, which I don't think it's going to happen.
09:05But my bold prediction was that Miami was going to miss a bowl game this year.
09:09And, like, so I had to unfold, like, how it happens.
09:13I mean, what are we doing?
09:13They're not that dissimilar to what Florida State was last year.
09:18Massive expectations.
09:20They had all this transfer portal action.
09:22The thing that I've realized in the portal, in the portal world that we live in,
09:27when you live in the portal and you ask those guys to do a lot,
09:29if you're a frontrunner, it can work great.
09:32But the minute things start to go south, which could be a loss to Notre Dame
09:37and potentially a loss to Florida before you have to play Florida State on the road,
09:42if they start off slow, you could see a team throwing the towel,
09:45much like you saw in Tallahassee.
09:47I'm not saying it does happen, but there is a recipe.
09:51There is a recipe for disaster.
09:52I know who Danny is.
09:54I booked him for Canes Notre Dame week.
09:56This one's on me.
09:57I take all the heat on this.
09:59This was not the right forum for Danny Connell this week.
10:02I made a mistake because I was excited this week.
10:05There's great college football in the state of Florida with Canes opening against Notre Dame.
10:10Your Seminoles open against Alabama.
10:14And Crowder, you've got Long Island University.
10:17Hey, watch out for the Sarks.
10:20Watch out for the Sarks.
10:21Everybody talks about Florida.
10:23How's Florida going to get past Long Island University?
10:261-0, 1-0, baby.
10:271-0, baby.
10:28That's what we do.
10:29Good.
10:29Danny Connell's with us, by the way, courtesy of BetOnline.
10:34That's a big opening weekend for the Canes and FSU.
10:38Do you like that?
10:40When, you know, Canes, like you say, you can start building a narrative after week one.
10:44Whether it's fair or not, Notre Dame's a better team.
10:46They're higher ranked.
10:48Alabama's higher ranked than FSU.
10:50Those are tough games, marquee games, but tough to start a season.
10:54I love it from a fan perspective.
10:56I don't think coaches love it.
10:57I think everybody would love to start off with a Long Island like the Gators have.
11:01Because really, I mean, think about it.
11:03I just mentioned how nobody hits in training camp anymore.
11:06They shouldn't even call it training camp.
11:07They should call it sleepaway camp.
11:09Like, it's just, it's like they go and they have fun.
11:11It's a lot of walkthroughs.
11:13A lot of, like, air.
11:14Like, they don't even tackle live anymore.
11:16So, there's essentially no preseason.
11:18So, you've got a built-in preseason game for the Gators, which is great.
11:21And I would probably prefer that.
11:23The good news about it is you do have a massive opportunity.
11:26And if you lose, if it's not ugly.
11:29Now, Florida State kind of makes me nervous.
11:31If they lose ugly at Alabama, they're a two-touchdown underdog.
11:33You talk about, like, panic sets in.
11:36You lose the fan base.
11:37That could happen.
11:38But let's say Miami loses close to the point spread.
11:41They lose by a field goal.
11:42I don't think there's any shame in that.
11:44Losing to a team that played for the national title last year, it doesn't kill your resume.
11:48You can still accomplish all your goals.
11:50And if you win that game, so here's what I'll tell you about Miami that's a good thing.
11:54This Miami team kind of reminds me of the Florida State team from two years ago.
11:58They faced LSU in the first game of the season.
12:01It was a huge test.
12:02And they won that game.
12:03And they went through and ran the table in the regular season and won it.
12:06But I do think if Miami beats Notre Dame, they could be that team that has 10 or 11 wins,
12:12gets to the ACC championship, reaches all their goals, and kind of carries that huge win
12:17through the season.
12:18Because I think that sort of signature win brings a ton of confidence to the players,
12:23the coaching staff, and the fan base.
12:26So I think that game could be a huge momentum builder for the Canes.
12:30Hey, Hawk, you say Alabama's ranked higher than Florida State.
12:33Wait, I think Long Island might be ranked higher than Florida State.
12:36Now we're just throwing haymakers.
12:38Now we're just throwing haymakers.
12:41Hold on, let me get my piece of paper.
12:43Let me write that down.
12:45In the ACC, Clemson is in everybody's top five.
12:50Are they legit?
12:51Club Nick and all, like, I'm hearing all this stuff.
12:53I'm surprised every time I see a different poll and they got Clemson in the top five.
12:58I'm buying in.
12:59I love Dabo Sweeney.
13:01They've been a perennial contender.
13:03Even last year, like, when they were cast aside and they lose to South Carolina,
13:07they find out a way to come back and win the ACC.
13:11And they actually put up a really good fight against Texas in that game.
13:14Like, they played Texas as good as anybody did, you know, throughout the season last year.
13:19They've got the pedigree.
13:20Here's my biggest question mark.
13:21And this is where, if you wanted to say they're fraudulent, the defense,
13:25the reason people are on this team is there's a lot of star power, like first-round talent.
13:30We hear that all the time on the defensive side of the ball.
13:32TJ Parker is supposed to be a first-round pick.
13:35They've got multiple guys on that side of the ball.
13:37They've got Cade Clubnick coming back, who on the back end of the season last year really played well.
13:42But all the same guys on that defense that were first-round talent, they were there last year,
13:48and they finished second to last in the ACC in rushing defense.
13:53Like, that's a cause for concern.
13:55Now, they did make a change at defensive coordinator.
13:57They bring in Tom Allen from Penn State.
13:59But it's like, is scheme all they were missing, or is there some talent up front?
14:03And they were 0-3 against the SEC last season, got beat by Georgia, got beat by Texas,
14:09and then lost that game against South Carolina.
14:11So, it does make me a little bit concerned that they didn't play great against the best competition last year,
14:16but they've been such a consistent winner.
14:19Like, I think that people are just trusting that with the returning talent they've got,
14:23they're going to improve.
14:24Their schedule's not exactly the hardest schedule in the country.
14:27But that LSU game, we're going to learn a lot about Clemson Tigers.
14:30Who's the cream of the crop in the ACC?
14:33Oh, it's Clemson.
14:34I do think it's Clemson.
14:35But I do think, like, the oddsmakers, if they're right, it will be a Miami-Clemson matchup,
14:39which could be phenomenal.
14:41I think people are sleeping on Louisville.
14:43You know, Louisville last year went into Clemson and pushed them around.
14:46Like, they had a really impressive win.
14:49Jeff Brom, their coach, has kind of lived in the portal.
14:51He's done a great job with quarterbacks.
14:53They got Miller Moss.
14:54They got Isaac Brown from Miami, who is probably the best back in the ACC.
14:58They're going to run the football.
14:59They're pretty physical up front.
15:00I think people are sleeping on Louisville.
15:02And then there is a wild card up in Tallahassee.
15:04You never know what you're going to get.
15:05So, I mean, just saying.
15:06I was giving them some low-hanging fruit to see if he was going to take it.
15:09I'm just saying.
15:11You never know.
15:12They did flip things around a couple years ago.
15:14You never know.
15:14You never know.
15:15Really?
15:15You never know.
15:17Really?
15:18Danny Connell.
15:18We've got our 5'9 quarterback running around back there making plays.
15:22You never know.
