In a newly released set of interviews with the Department of Justice, Jeffrey Epstein's accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, discussed the purchase of Epstein's Island, Little Saint James.
Transcript
00:00We recorded proper interview of Ms. Maxwell.
00:03The time is 12.59, Thursday, July 24th.
00:12Okay, so just continuing to talk about Ms. Maxwell.
00:20Still focused on the 90s time period,
00:23with understanding that it could spill over in the early 2000s,
00:25but still that part of your life with Mr. Epstein.
00:31There's been public reporting about conduct by Mr. Epstein and others at Little St. James.
00:41Yes.
00:42So can you talk about the frequency with which you went there
00:49and address some of the reporting,
00:56namely around young masseuses or young women who would be present
01:00and what you observed relating to them,
01:05and then I'll ask questions around that.
01:07So, if I'm right, he purchased the island in 1996,
01:12and he was friendly with the owners,
01:14and originally we went to the island as guests of the owners,
01:19and then I guess at some point the owners told him
01:22they wanted to sell and he decided to purchase it.
01:26So, the island was very rustic.
01:31I loved it.
01:32Of course, they had completely different ideas.
01:36And I would say there was none of what you were describing
01:41at that early period of time.
01:43So, the frequency was often on the island
01:47because he loved it.
01:51He really, really loved it.
01:53And we would go all the time.
01:57Mostly, all the early phase was based on improvements
02:03that could be made on the island,
02:05always going with new architects,
02:09new designers, new construction people.
02:12I'd say the first two years,
02:16almost every trip,
02:18not everyone, but almost every trip,
02:20contained an individual
02:22who would be brought on board
02:25to have an opinion as to how to...
02:28I don't want to use the word improve the island
02:32because I don't think you could improve it,
02:33but to...
02:34I can't think what the word would be to...
02:38to develop it.
02:45Sorry, that's the word.
02:46Okay.
02:47Develop the island.
02:48That's the word I'm looking for.
02:49So, there were trips,
02:52constant trips with that in mind.
02:54And I would say now,
02:55if we're moving to the late 90s, 96, 97...
