03:04One home erupting, catching two nearby homes on fire.

03:28The interior of this home charred down to its frame.
03:31Bricks and 2x4s scattered across the area.
03:34At least three people injured.
03:36Remarkably, no one killed.
03:37You can look at this carnage and the fact that no one was killed is an absolute blessing.
03:44Officials asking residents to stay away as they assess the damage.
03:47If there's extensive damage in these homes, people will not be able to go back in there.
03:52It's just too dangerous at this time.
03:54Well, David, as far as what caused that explosion in the initial home tonight,
03:57the local gas company there says so far they have found no structural issues in that area.
04:03And tonight, the bomb and arson unit are leading the investigation, David.
04:07Mola Lengi, Mola, thank you.
04:08We turned out of the weather, record-breaking heat fueling multiple wildfires,
04:12forcing evacuations across several states.
04:14While in the northeast, a major shift in the weather, just as the Labor Day weekend approaches.
04:19First, the fires tonight north of San Francisco.
04:21These are the images.
04:22Firefighters battling the Pickett Fire.
04:24An emergency now declared.
04:26Evacuations underway.
04:27In central Oregon tonight, the Flat Fire exploding in size, scorching more than 30 square miles.
04:32Families forced to leave there as well.
04:35And tonight, they're now using helicopters to get firefighters to the front lines
04:38because it's been so difficult to fight the flames.
04:40And you'll see it.
04:41Lee Goldberg on the heat, the fires, and the big change in the northeast.
04:45And Trevor Ault in California tonight.
04:49Tonight, record-breaking heat fueling multiple wildfires in the west,
04:53destroying homes and forcing thousands to flee.
04:57North of San Francisco and Napa County,
04:59a massive, days-long battle to keep the Pickett Fire away from neighborhoods.
05:03Choppers making daring nighttime assaults on the flames.
05:07And with the terrain there extremely rugged and remote.
05:11This footage from Cal Fire showing a helicopter attack crew flying into an area impossible to reach on foot.
05:18That fire still burning out of control, now more than 10 square miles.
05:22Up in Oregon, the Flat Fire has destroyed multiple buildings southeast of Portland,
05:28including at least four homes more than 30 square miles charred since Thursday.
05:33The Pacific Northwest, sweltering.
05:35This weekend, officials in at least two Oregon counties reporting heat-related deaths.
05:40And in the desert southwest, monsoon storms threatening to spark new lightning-fueled fires.
05:47In Nevada's Black Rock Desert, a powerful overnight dust storm
05:51sending festival-goers scrambling for cover at Burning Man.
05:54Several tents damaged, but no one was hurt.
05:58And, David, the causes of both the Pickett Fire and the Flat Fire are under investigation.
06:03Thousands of firefighters have been dispatched to try to get them contained.
06:06David.
06:07All right, Trevor Ault tonight.
06:08Trevor, we appreciate it.
06:09Chief Meteorologist Lee Goldberg of WABC tracking it all for us,
06:12including a major cool-down in the Midwest and the Northeast with Labor Day almost here.
06:16But, Lee, I know you're going to start with these fires tonight.
06:20Absolutely, David, because it's another day tomorrow of high heat and fire danger in the northwest.
06:24Highs in the 90s, triple digits, dry breezes.
06:28You have heat alerts from California all the way to Washington.
06:31Well, there is some relief, and that's coming midweek.
06:33We go into the 80s, even into the 70s, places like Boise all the way back to Seattle.
06:37The monsoonal flow in the west is helping that, but we're also getting some flooding.
06:41We have some flood washes from California to Colorado all the way to Oklahoma, those areas in yellow.
06:46You can see some rainfall rates of two inches an hour and cause some flooding.
06:49Then the eastern two-thirds of the country, a major cool-down.
06:52We're skipping to September.
06:54Feels like 70s, and this coolness is stretching east where it will get to the coast as we go through midweek and last into the weekend.
07:00David.
07:00Lee Goldberg with us here on a Monday night.
07:02Lee, we appreciate it.
07:03Tonight, President Trump doubling down on his deployment of the National Guard in Washington, D.C.
07:07The troops are now armed, patrolling the streets as people head to work and as tourists visit the monuments.
07:12Tonight, the president suggesting Chicago is now next.
07:15And late today, Illinois' governor responding.
07:18Here's Rachel Scott.
07:18Tonight, 2,200 National Guard troops patrolling the streets of the nation's capital, commuters seeing them in train stations and stationed outside national monuments.
07:30And now, those troops are armed.
07:33They're armed, capable of defending themselves and others if need be, supporting law enforcement.
07:37Right now, the Guard is not deployed to Washington's most high-crime areas, stationed instead around tourist attractions and the metro.
07:45Local officials insist crime was already falling in D.C., homicide down 32 percent last year after hitting a 20-year high the year before.
07:54But the president insisting that's not good enough, now setting his sights on other cities.
07:59Look, Chicago, everybody knows how bad it is.
08:03They should be saying, please come in.
08:06Homicide in Chicago is down 50 percent over four years after surging dramatically during the pandemic.
08:12Tonight, the Democratic governor of Illinois firing back.
08:16This is about Donald Trump searching for any justification to deploy the military in a blue city, in a blue state, to try and intimidate his political rivals.
08:27Today, I asked the president if he would send National Guard troops into red states, too.
08:32The cities with the two highest homicide rates, St. Louis and New Orleans, though run by Democrats, are both in states with Republican governors.
08:40We've talked a lot about Democratic-run cities and states.
08:43Would you also consider sending the National Guard into red states and red cities that are also seeing high crime?
08:49Sure, but there aren't that many of them.
08:51If you look at the top 25 cities for crime, just about every one of those cities is run by Democrats.
08:58The president says he has not decided whether to send the National Guard to Chicago.
09:03But tonight, a blunt message for the president from the governor of Illinois saying, do not come.
09:08You're neither wanted here nor needed here.
09:11David.
09:11Rachel Scott, live at the White House for us.
09:13Rachel, thank you.
09:14Now to be outraged over the nine-hour Department of Justice interview with Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted of sex trafficking.
09:20Tonight, more of the audio here.
09:21What she says about President Trump, about former President Clinton, and about claims there's a Jeffrey Epstein client list.
09:28As the family of one of Jeffrey Epstein's accusers blasts the interview now, saying the Department of Justice is allowing Maxwell to rewrite history.
09:36Here's Erin Katursky.
09:37Tonight, the anguished family of Jeffrey Epstein's most vocal accuser says the Justice Department's, quote,
09:43bizarre interview of Epstein's accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell gave her a platform to rewrite history.
09:49The family of Virginia Dufresne furious after DOJ released audio and transcripts of Maxwell's nine-hour sit-down with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche,
09:57who used to be President Trump's personal lawyer.
09:59In the interview, Maxwell, who was serving 20 years for sex trafficking, proclaimed her innocence,
10:04insisted she didn't witness any inappropriate behavior by any of Epstein's powerful friends,
10:09and said a long-rumored list of Epstein's high-profile clients does not exist.
10:14There's no list. There's never been a list.
10:17And you never heard Mr. Epstein talk about such a list?
10:20Never.
10:21Maxwell was also asked about President Trump, who had a decade-long friendship with Epstein before their falling out.
10:26I never witnessed the president in any inappropriate setting in any way.
10:31The president was never inappropriate with anybody.
10:35In the times that I was with him, he was a gentleman in all respects.
10:38But she also contradicted Trump's claim former President Bill Clinton went to Epstein's private island 20 times.
10:45You're not aware of President Clinton ever going to the island?
10:48He never, absolutely never went, and I can be sure of that, because there's no way he would have gone.
10:53I don't believe there's any way that he would have gone to the island had I not been there,
10:57because I don't believe he had an independent friendship, if you will, with Epstein.
11:02At the outset of the interview, the Deputy Attorney General telling Maxwell she shouldn't expect to be rewarded.
11:07By you meeting with us today, we're really just meeting.
11:11I'm not promising to do anything.
11:13I'm not promising to ask Judge Nathan or any of the judges that have been assigned to your case to do anything.
11:20We're just talking.
11:22But Democratic Senator Adam Schiff says that just doesn't wash.
11:25So she wants a pardon.
11:27She says exactly what her lawyers tell her is going to be necessary to get a pardon.
11:31Shortly after the interview, in a highly unusual move, the Justice Department transferred Maxwell to a minimum security prison camp.
11:39Tonight, Virginia Dufresne's family says that sends a disturbing message that child sex trafficking is acceptable and will be rewarded.
11:46The interview really was extraordinary, David.
11:50We can't think of another time a Deputy Attorney General flew to meet a convicted sex offender at her invitation.
11:57We know Maxwell wants out of prison.
11:59So the question tonight, David, does the president grant her wish?
12:02David.
12:03You'll continue to follow this case, Aaron.
12:05Now to the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, three days after being released from custody.
12:09He's now back in custody tonight.
12:11The administration now saying he will be sent to Uganda late today.
12:15A judge stepping in.
12:16And here's Pierre Thomas.
12:18Just three days after he was released from federal custody, Kilmar Abrego Garcia arrested again by ICE officers when he arrived at his scheduled immigration appointment in Baltimore.
12:28And tonight, the Department of Homeland Security says he's being processed for deportation to Uganda.
12:33We are on Kilmar.
12:35Abrego Garcia, who was returned to the U.S. after being wrongfully deported to a notorious prison in El Salvador, today is surrounded by supporters.
12:46Even though injustice is hitting us hard, he said we do not lose faith.
12:52He's facing criminal charges filed after his deportation to El Salvador became the focus of an international controversy.
12:58He's currently charged with human smuggling, including children.
13:03The guy needs to be in prison.
13:04Abrego Garcia has pleaded not guilty, but his attorneys say the administration offered him a deal.
13:10If he changed his plea and serves time in prison, he would then be deported to Costa Rica, which has agreed to accept him as a refugee or a resident.
13:18They say if he didn't take the deal, he'd be deported to Uganda.
13:22David, tonight a federal judge putting the brakes on the government's plan to deport Abrego Garcia to Uganda, saying for now, U.S. officials are absolutely forbidden from removing him from the U.S.
13:32The judge said it seems the administration wants to punish Abrego Garcia simply because he has exercised his constitutional right to a trial.
13:40David.
13:41Pierre Thomas, live in Washington.
13:42Pierre, thanks.
13:43Overseas tonight to Israel's deadly airstrike in a hospital in Gaza.
13:46Five journalists are among at least 20 people killed.
13:50Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tonight calling it a tragic mishap.
13:54Here's our chief international correspondent, James Longman.
13:59Outrage is growing tonight after Israeli airstrikes on a Gaza hospital killed five journalists, among at least 20 killed and dozens more injured.
14:08NASA Hospital in Khan Yunus was hit with an initial strike, and after rescuers and journalists had rushed to the scene, a second strike came in.
14:16Graphic video capturing these moments just before it blasts the hospital, smoke and dust billowing where people stood seconds earlier.
14:24Camera equipment found in the rubble.
14:27Israel says they were targeting Hamas and regrets the harm to civilians not involved, and that journalists are not specifically targeted.
14:34The five killed all worked for international news outlets, and it comes less than two weeks after an Israeli strike killed six journalists outside a different hospital.
14:42Any reaction to this?
14:44Well, I'm not happy about it. I don't want to see it. At the same time, we have to end that whole nightmare.
14:49The Committee to Protect Journalists accuses Israel of deliberately targeting journalists in order to stop information from leaving Gaza.
14:56They say nearly 200 journalists have been killed since this war began.
15:01Israel denies that claim and say they've launched an investigation.
15:04David?
15:05James Longman in London tonight. James, thank you.
15:07Back here in the U.S. tonight, the countdown to that launch after multiple dramatic setbacks.
15:11SpaceX and the test launch set for just a short time ago.
15:15Gio Benitez on how this played out tonight.
15:18Tonight, just moments before launch, SpaceX scrubbing the 10th test flight of the Starship because of bad weather.
15:23The world's most powerful rocket sitting on the launch pad in southern Texas, waiting for the go-ahead to launch.
15:30Back in June, a Starship exploded on the launch pad during a pre-flight engine test.
15:34And over the past three flights, the Starship either blew up or broke apart, sending debris streaking across the skies over the Atlantic, forcing ground stops at airports.
15:44A lot is riding on this mission.
15:46Elon Musk is hoping that the Starship will one day take people to the moon or even Mars.
15:51Each launch is about learning more and more about what's needed to make life multi-planetary and to improve Starship to the point where it can be taking ultimately hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people to Mars.
16:04And David, Elon says that the whole goal here is to quickly reuse rockets to eventually build a colony on Mars.
16:12David.
16:12Gio Benitez following this into the evening.
16:14Gio, thank you.
16:15When we come back tonight in New York's Central Park, two separate attacks, the awful descriptions of these attacks.
16:20And there is news coming in on this.
16:22Also, the major meltdown at the U.S. Open, what a tennis player did with millions watching.
16:27And look at this tonight, the stunning crash of firefighting helicopter trying to fill its bucket right there.
16:31The pilot then losing control, the chopper then plunging into the water.
16:36What happens next here in just a moment?
16:39Tonight in New York City, police arresting a suspect accused of two separate attacks in Central Park.
16:44Authorities say an 18-year-old victim was punched, kicked and choked near West 62nd Street in Manhattan.
16:50Police believe the same suspect later threw a 37-year-old man to the ground, biting his ear at West 93rd Street.
16:57Both victims are in stable condition.
16:59Overseas tonight, dramatic video of a firefighting helicopter crash in Brittany, France.
17:03The chopper filling its bucket with water, then spinning out of control and plunging into the pond right there.
17:09The pilot's obviously losing control.
17:10Both, though, escaping without injury.
17:13Just extraordinary.
17:14When we come back here, the remarkable scene, the tennis tantrum at the U.S. Open.
17:18What a player did in front of millions watching.
17:20And the new turn tonight with this.
17:22And the Powerball jackpot.
17:23The new jackpot number tonight.
17:24And it sounds real nice.
17:25To the index in the epic meltdown at the U.S. Open here in New York, Russia's Danil Medvedev taking on France's Benjamin Bonzi in the first round.
17:33It began with a photographer mistakenly walking out of the court in a third set.
17:38Medvedev fuming at the chair umpire for giving Bonzi a do-over on his first serve, riling up the crowd, causing a six-minute delay.
17:45He went on to lose in five sets, smashing his racket to pieces.
17:49This went on and on.
17:50The photographer, by the way, who sparked the meltdown, now banned from the tournament.
17:53But tonight, Medvedev says he does not blame the photographer.
17:57The Powerball jackpot tonight's drawing now worth $750 million.
18:01That's $338 million if you take the lump sum payment.
18:04Let us know if you win.
18:05When we come back here in the Northeast, the lifeguard at the beach getting all the attention.
18:10And he should.
18:13Finally, the lifeguard.
18:14America strong.
18:15Tonight, with swimmers across this country getting ready for the Labor Day holiday at Bayhead Beach in New Jersey,
18:21they are celebrating a beloved lifeguard who has kept them safe for 63 years.
18:27According to Guinness World Records, at 82 years old, Ed Kazukowicz is the oldest open-water lifeguard in the world.
18:34In 1960, he was just 18.
18:37Ed began lifeguarding at the local pool.
18:39Two years later, he started lifeguarding all along the Jersey Shore.
18:42In the 70s and 80s, that's Ed with his daughter, Christina, just two years old in the picture.
18:48Through the decades, he has trained and mentored countless lifeguards.
18:51And right here tonight, Ed, at 82, why he's still doing it.
18:56He's out in the sunshine, able to do what I like to, which is watch people on the border.
19:01And joining us, too.
19:02Hello, David.
19:03Bayhead Beach Superintendent Hei Kanchen, who hired Ed for his current post at this beach more than 20 years ago.
19:10Every year, I get people asking me, is Ed coming back? Is Ed coming back?
19:13I said, as far as I know, he'll be back.
19:15So many stopping by to see Ed right there in the lifeguard chair.
19:18Hi, David.
19:19Bayhead Council President Dennis Shanning.
19:22He brings a lot of young bards along, teaches them what they need to know.
19:2818-year-old Dylan Johnson, it's his first season as a lifeguard.
19:31What Ed taught me a lot about this summer was seeing where rip currents are, how to identify if a swimmer's in distress.
19:38And tonight, Ed here with one simple message for you, with Labor Day now approaching.
19:42It's a nice sunny day. Have a good time.
19:46Thank you, Ed. I'll see you tomorrow. Good night.
19:48David Muir, the most-watched newscast in America.
