02:24From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight with David Muir.
02:32Good evening, and it's great to have you with us here on a very busy Tuesday night.
02:35We begin tonight here with the stunning images, the dust storm that swept across several cities.
02:39The drivers suddenly blinded by the dust, passenger planes grounded, air traffic controllers forced to evacuate the tower.
02:46We're also following this major change coming to the northeast for Labor Day.
02:50But first tonight, the remarkable images.
02:52The towering cloud of dust, hundreds of feet high, moving in over the Phoenix metro area.
02:56After an unusually dry summer, this storm swept in, leaving drivers unable to see.
03:00You will hear people in their cars narrating how dangerous this was, how conditions changed in an instant.
03:07The massive dust storm turning day to night, causing travel chaos, leaving those drivers in the dark, visibility near zero.
03:13And then the flooding rains and wind gusts up to 70 miles an hour.
03:16Part of the roof at the Phoenix airport ripped off.
03:19Air traffic controllers evacuating that tower with passenger planes still in the air.
03:24Across the region tonight, traffic lights and trees down.
03:27Tens of thousands without power.
03:29And now the new storms still coming tonight.
03:31And of course, this big change for much of the Midwest and the Northeast for Labor Day.
03:35Lee Goldberg standing by with the forecast and ABC's Trevor Rull with the chaotic moments in the middle of this very dangerous storm.
03:43Tonight, dust storms and monsoon rains threatening millions.
03:47After an astonishing and dangerous 24 hours in the Southwest, this massive towering wall of dust and wind, also known as a haboob, swallowing the Phoenix metro area.
03:58Light rail just disappeared.
03:59Drivers blinded.
04:01Cassandra Ravutsky recording this video out her window as the dust blotted out the sun, flashing taillights, the only thing visible.
04:09You can see, take a look at these planes that are right here.
04:13Our Phoenix affiliate ABC 15 reporting live from Sky Harbor Airport as that dust wall turned into driving dirt and rain.
04:22It's hard to open my eyes because we are once again getting pelted, pelted with rain, pelted with what feels like dust.
04:31Listen to the air traffic controllers telling pilots to stay in the air while they evacuate the tower.
04:36They said that the dust storm is going to be, I got no point of visibility, it's going to be pretty bad for like an hour.
04:43We are evacuating.
04:44Not only were flights grounded, one of the terminals sustained damage.
04:49The powerful system also taking down traffic lights and trees with thousands of homes and businesses losing power.
04:57And David, flood watches are in effect for 2 million people with rainfall rates up to 2 inches an hour in some spots.
05:03This region does need this rain desperately, just not all at once.
05:08David?
05:08That is for sure.
05:09Trevor Ralt leading us off.
05:10Trevor, thank you.
05:11Let's get right to Chief Meteorologist Lee Goldberg from WABC right here in New York.
05:15Hi, Lee.
05:15Hi, David.
05:16And we're still watching some heavy showers near Sedona this evening.
05:19One way or another, we're cooling off from coast to coast.
05:21In the west, it's the monsoon pattern.
05:23And it's widespread showers.
05:24And some of those showers could drop some rainfall rates at 2 inches an hour.
05:28Flood watches from California to Idaho all the way into Colorado.
05:31And some of those yellow areas see the highest rainfall rates.
05:34So we extinguished the high heat in the Pacific Northwest, although it still stays above average in temperatures.
05:39But when you look at the Rockies, the Plains, the East, 10 to 20 degrees below average.
05:43Look at Wichita tomorrow, 71.
05:45And the afternoons are comfortable, but the mornings, there's some chill near record chill in Toledo in the 40s tomorrow morning.
05:51Memphis in the 50s.
05:52This goes right into the weekend.
05:53It's cool and comfortable all the way into the northeast.
05:56How about 10 degrees below average?
05:57Boston to New York and Philly, low in mid-70s on Saturday.
06:00Even 60s from places like Cleveland over to Syracuse.
06:03David, it's comfy in the classroom after that.
06:05Back to you.
06:06Lee Goldberg back with us again tonight.
06:07Lee, thanks as always.
06:09Now to President Trump tonight and his new move to fire a member of the Federal Reserve's Board of Governors.
06:13It comes after months of the president pressuring the Fed to lower interest rates.
06:18Tonight, that board member vowing to fight this could go to the Supreme Court.
06:21Here's Rachel Scott.
06:22For months, President Trump has put enormous pressure on the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates.
06:29And tonight, he's making an unprecedented move to fire one of the Fed's seven board members, Lisa Cook.
06:35He told Cook, who was appointed by Joe Biden, he's removing her because there is sufficient reason to believe you may have made false statements on one or more mortgage applications.
06:44It seems to have had an infraction and she can't have an infraction.
06:48We need people that are 100% above board and it doesn't seem like she was.
06:53But Cook has not been charged with any crime.
06:56The Federal Reserve was designed to be independent.
06:59And today, the president was asked if he's just looking for a reason to fire an official he disagrees with.
07:04Is your administration weaponizing government by digging into the mortgage records of officials you don't like?
07:10No, they're public.
07:11I mean, you can find out those records.
07:13You can go check out the records yourself.
07:15Cook, for her part, says President Trump has no authority to fire her, vowing, I will not resign.
07:21Her lawyer calling the president's move an illegal action and vowing to sue.
07:25And today, President Trump says he only wants to appoint Fed board members who will lower interest rates, saying we will have the majority soon.
07:33In the meantime, the Federal Reserve reasserting its independence, saying that its members can only be removed for cause, calling that a vital safeguard to protect the American people, David.
07:43All right, Rachel Scott right there at the White House.
07:45Rachel, thank you.
07:46And it was during that hours long cabinet meeting, President Trump was also asked about the major headline breaking and not from the political world.
07:52It was news of this big engagement.
07:54Taylor Swift engaged to NFL star Travis Kelsey, the president saying, I think he's a great player.
08:00I think she's a terrific person.
08:01So I wish them a lot of luck tonight.
08:03Taylor Swift's message that she sent out to her hundreds of millions of fans in an instant and the reaction across this country and the world.
08:10Here's back up in tonight.
08:12They were already American pop culture royalty.
08:15But today, the announcement that musical icon Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsey, prince of the gridiron, breaks a tackle, still going.
08:23Sparky celebration.
08:24What?
08:26I think I'm more excited about this than it would be about my own engagement.
08:28Oh my God.
08:31What is happening?
08:32And tears of joy worldwide.
08:34Taylor Swift engaged.
08:38Why do I want to cry?
08:39The rollout blasted out to Taylor's 280 million Instagram followers, a fairytale garden of roses, the big fella down on his knee, a rock fit for a queen.
08:49And the caption, your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.
08:58From the beginning, there were doubters, some even questioning whether it was all just a PR stunt.
09:03But Swift quickly became a fixture at Chief Games and Travis right there in the concert stage in a tux.
09:09Their support for each other and staying power proving the cynics wrong.
09:13And just days ago, Swift announced her new album on the Kelsey Brothers podcast and shared details about how Travis used the podcast to tell the world he wanted to date her.
09:22If you're up on Taylor Swift concerts, there are friendship bracelets.
09:27And I received a bunch of them being there, but I wanted to give Taylor Swift one with my number on it.
09:33Not right now.
09:33Ooh.
09:34Your number's in 87 or your phone number?
09:37You know which one.
09:40Their courtship, typically storybook.
09:42This kind of felt more like I was in an 80s John Hughes movie and he was just like standing outside of my window with a boombox just being like, I want to date you.
09:51Yeah.
09:52Do you want to go on a date with me?
09:53I made you a friendship place or do you want to date me?
09:55Just come outside and meet me.
09:56Just meet me once.
09:58Give me a chance.
09:59I was like, this guy isn't crazy, which is a big if.
10:04This is sort of what I've been writing songs about wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager.
10:11And David, some of their 300 million followers on social media have been asking where and when these nuptials might happen.
10:18And some are also asking about kids.
10:20No word on either.
10:21David.
10:22We are wishing them well for sure.
10:23Matt Gupin tonight, Matt.
10:25Tonight, authorities revealing more than a dozen arrests in what they're calling the largest Home Depot theft case in the company's history.
10:31They say surveillance video shows suspects linked to 600 thefts at 71 Home Depot stores in Southern California.
10:38The ring accused of stealing $10 million worth of merchandise, including expensive electrical components, then resold.
10:44Tonight, the suspects have pleaded not guilty.
10:47Overseas tonight, the remarkable images coming in.
10:49A massive day of protests across Israel.
10:51Hundreds of thousands taking to the streets, demanding a ceasefire in Gaza and that their loved ones, the hostages, be brought home.
10:59James Longman tonight with Late Reporting.
11:00James.
11:01Yeah, David, there's been a huge day of protests today in Israel, at least 350,000 people taking to the streets.
11:09Families of the hostages are angry that a deal to get them out has yet to materialize.
11:13Now, Hamas has reportedly accepted a 60-day pause and partial hostage release.
11:18But instead, Israel is pushing ahead with its plan for a military occupation of Gaza City.
11:23There are also growing questions tonight about that Israeli strike on Nasser Hospital that killed 20 people, including five journalists.
11:30Netanyahu initially called it a mishap.
11:32Now, the IDF says a Hamas camera was seen at that location.
11:36There's still no explanation as to what prompted the second strike that killed first responders and journalists.
11:42David.
11:43All right, James Longman from London.
11:44James, thank you.
11:45Back here at home tonight and to the Diane Sawyer exclusive.
11:48The deeply personal battle faced by so many families across this country when a loved one faces down dementia.
11:54Tonight, Bruce Willis, the beloved star in more than 70 movies after years of Bruce sitting down with Diane.
12:00Tonight, Diane with Bruce's wife.
12:02What she shares about Bruce's battle, a certain form of dementia, frontotemporal dementia, how he's doing, how the family knew the first signs, and their hope tonight for so many other families out there.
12:12Diane's exclusive interview with Emma Willis, Bruce Willis' wife.
12:15Diane, you're here.
12:19I'm here.
12:19Here we are.
12:20Oh, it's great.
12:21It's so nice to see you.
12:22How are you?
12:24It's so nice to see you.
12:25This is Emma Hemming Willis, a self-described lifelong introvert.
12:30See if you're comfortable.
12:31Stealing herself to talk in front of cameras.
12:33Okay.
12:34Something she never sought and never planned.
12:36Bruce!
12:37For 16 years, she's been the shy wife of the irrepressible Bruce Willis, one of America's favorite action stars.
12:45Welcome to the party, pal!
12:47He could take down a battalion of bad guys.
12:51And then nail an old Bing Crosby song.
12:54Oh, won't you rather be a fish?
12:57A fish is an animal that swims in a brook.
13:00The all-American kid from New Jersey, who built a towering career, more than 70 movies.
13:08Come on to the coast and get together, have a few laughs.
13:13It's the king of the blockbuster franchises, Die Hard.
13:17And in person, he was the mischievous guy who urged everyone to sing and celebrate life every day.
13:25He dropped by year after year at Good Morning America.
13:28Well, Bruce Willis dropped in the other day.
13:30And now Bruce Willis.
13:31Bruce Willis.
13:32Bruce Willis.
13:33Oh, no.
13:34You are so cool.
13:35You know, you are really cool.
13:37Even in the commercial breaks, we keep talking about everything.
13:42After he and actress Demi Moore divorced, he pushed me to set him up with a nice girl.
13:47And are you sufficiently ready?
13:49Can I interview Diane today?
13:50Can't you find me?
13:51You know what I discovered?
13:52Can't you find someone for me?
13:56You must meet so many people.
13:58I see you say that, but...
14:05And then he found her.
14:08What can make me feel this way?
14:12My girl.
14:15My girl!
14:16Opposites attract.
14:20And I just love watching him be him.
14:23Sixteen years ago, they had a tiny wedding on the beach, and the joyful ride began.
14:31They were the famously blended Willis family.
14:34Two marriages, five daughters.
14:36His oldest daughters, Rumor, Scout, and Tallulah.
14:40And then, with Emma, he has two more girls, Mabel and Evelyn.
14:44The original girl, Dad.
14:46One of the best.
14:48And the thing he said most was, live it up.
14:51The exact quote, live it up every moment, every day.
14:56It'll be over in the ginger snap.
15:00Yes, can be.
15:03She has written a book shining a light on the little-known disease that ambushed her husband
15:07three years ago, and giving a lifeline to caregivers.
15:12She says the subtle symptoms began when she noticed the boy-aunt-girl dad seemed subdued.
15:17For someone who was very talkative and very engaged, he was just a little more quiet.
15:25He seemed to be losing words.
15:27A childhood stutter reappeared, and he was just less engaged in their lives.
15:32Felt a little removed, very cold.
15:36Not like Bruce, who was very warm and affectionate.
15:40To going the complete opposite of that was alarming and scary.
15:47Frontotemporal dementia savagely eats away at the front and sides of the brain,
15:51causing a person to start losing words, dimming connection to others.
15:56I can only imagine the panic.
15:59I was so panicked, and I just remember hearing it and just not hearing anything else.
16:05It was like I was free-falling.
16:07And how did Bruce react?
16:09I don't know if he was reluctant or not to go to a doctor, or if he even understood there was a reason you were doing it.
16:17I don't think Bruce ever really connected the dots.
16:20An inevitable new reality arrives.
16:24Bruce is still very mobile.
16:27Bruce is in really great health overall.
16:29Overall, you know, it's just his brain that is failing him.
16:34But the language is...
16:35Yeah, the language is going.
16:37And, you know, we've learned to adapt, and we have a way of communicating with him, which is just a different way.
16:45Were there days that it would be Bruce again?
16:48Yeah, I mean, we still get those days.
16:52Not days, but we get moments.
16:55It's his laugh, right?
16:56Like, he has such a, like, a hearty laugh.
17:00And, you know, sometimes he'll see that twinkle in his eye or that smirk.
17:06And, you know, I just get, like, transported.
17:09And it's just hard to see that because as quickly as those moments appear, then it goes.
17:27It's hard.
17:28But I'm grateful.
17:30I'm grateful that, you know, my husband is still very much here.
17:33Emma is so brave to share this story and Diane's special right here on ABC Tonight, just a short time from now, 8 p.m. Eastern,
17:41and then streaming tomorrow on Disney Plus and Hulu.
17:44And Emma Hemming-Willis' book, The Unexpected Journey, Finding Strength and Hope, on sale September 9th.
17:49We should mention Diane off camera had a moment to interact with Bruce Willis, and we'll have more on that later.
17:54Also, when we come back tonight, news, the images coming in, two medical evacuations.
17:58Take a look at these pictures playing out at once.
18:00On board a cruise ship right off the U.S. coast, one helicopter hovering in the air, waiting as the first patient is airlifted onto another helicopter.
18:08The emergencies that led to this in a moment.
18:11And outside New York City tonight, the deadly crash right through the glass windows of a gym.
18:15A member working out has been killed.
18:17Several injuries.
18:18We'll have more in a moment here.
18:21Tonight, a deadly car crash into a Planet Fitness gym in Elizabeth, New Jersey, outside New York City.
18:25A driver smashing through the front of the gym.
18:27One man working out inside the gym, killed.
18:29Several other people hurt.
18:31No word on what caused the crash.
18:33The driver injured.
18:34She is cooperating.
18:35No word on her condition.
18:37Dramatic images tonight.
18:38Two medical evacuations at once on board a cruise ship right off the coast of Washington State.
18:42Two passengers suffering medical emergencies aboard the Ruby Princess.
18:46One helicopter hovering there, waiting as the first patient is airlifted.
18:49A 52-year-old passenger suffering cardiac arrest.
18:52And a 99-year-old passenger with an obstruction in the esophagus.
18:56Both passengers are now hospitalized.
18:57When we come back tonight, those popular weight loss and diabetes drugs, will they soon be available in a pill?
19:03And the Powerball jackpot, the new jackpot, where it stands tonight.
19:09Tonight, drugmaker Eli Lilly with promising new data.
19:12Phase three of clinical trials for that popular weight loss medication now in a pill.
19:16A GLP-1 drug.
19:17They claim it could help patients lose an average of 23 pounds and lower blood sugar levels.
19:21Eli Lilly and Nova Nordisk both trying to get FDA approval for the drug in a pill form.
19:25No winner, the new Powerball jackpot, $815 million now.
19:30The next drawing is tomorrow night.
19:32When we come back, an important note about Diane's special just moments from now about Bruce Willis.
19:37A final note about Diane's special.
19:41She did get a chance to interact with Bruce Willis away from the cameras, and she'll share what that was like.
19:468 p.m. Eastern, right here tonight.
19:48Good night.
