02:28From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight with David Muir.
02:36Good evening, and it's great to have you with us here at a very busy Tuesday night.
02:39We begin tonight with new reporting.
02:41We take you inside that deadly shooting right in the heart of New York City.
02:44It was just as we were coming on with the news last night.
02:47Authorities say a gunman was walking calmly into a Park Avenue office building,
02:50opening fire on his way in and making it all the way to the 33rd floor.
02:55You can see it here, an M4-style assault rifle at his side.
02:58He killed four people and wounded a fifth.
03:00The suspect, 27-year-old Shane Tamora, approaching 345 Park Avenue, just blocks from Grand Central Station.
03:07In the lobby, opening fire, killing an NYPD officer and two others before taking the elevator to the 33rd floor.
03:14Officers with long guns responding, entering the building, soon running out, carrying the wounded, treating them on the street.
03:20We're learning more about the terrifying ordeal inside.
03:23Look at this.
03:23Workers hearing the gunfire, then stacking office furniture to barricade the doors.
03:27Police clearing the building, people running from the scene with their hands in the air.
03:32The faces of the fallen tonight.
03:34Officer Didnal Islam working an extra shift, leaving behind a pregnant wife and two sons.
03:39Wesley Lepatner, who worked for Blackstone.
03:41Security guard Alana Tian and Julia Hyman, who worked on the 33rd floor.
03:46Tonight here, what we have just learned about the suspect driving from Nevada all the way to New York before going on this rampage.
03:52Authorities now believe he was targeting the NFL.
03:54Well, ABC's chief investigative correspondent, Aaron Katursky, is on the scene, leading us off tonight.
04:01Tonight, the terrifying scene in midtown Manhattan.
04:06After a deadly shooting rampage that authorities now believe targeted the headquarters of the National Football League
04:11because the shooter thought he suffered a traumatic brain injury.
04:14We're getting multiple calls from 345 Park Avenue.
04:17Sources tell ABC News the shooter left a three-page note blaming the NFL for his traumatic brain injury.
04:23He did play football, but never made it to that level.
04:26On this page, obtained by ABC News, he wrote,
04:29Study my brain, please.
04:30I'm sorry.
04:31This chilling image shows the shooter wearing sunglasses,
04:34casually walking toward his target with an M4-style rifle.
04:37They're going to 345.
04:39That's where he is.
04:39Police say 27-year-old Shane Tamura double-parked his BMW and entered the lobby about 6.30 last night,
04:45immediately opening fire.
04:47He shot and killed an NYPD officer.
04:49The shooter kept firing, killing a woman hiding behind a pillar,
04:53and then a security guard taking cover behind a desk.
04:57When the shooter then moved deeper inside the building,
04:59police say he allowed a woman stepping off an elevator to pass unharmed.
05:03Perhaps seeking out the NFL offices,
05:05he instead wound up on the 33rd floor, where he fired again down a hallway.
05:10The 33rd floor is not secure.
05:12We have multiple people shot.
05:14Taking another life before shooting himself in the chest.
05:18Police carrying victims from the building, treating them on the street.
05:23While other officers rushed inside with guns drawn,
05:26employees barricading doors with furniture.
05:30Later exiting with their hands up,
05:32office worker Tim Wynn terrified.
05:34We heard shootings.
05:36Can you tell me what you heard?
05:37Ran into the room.
05:37So loud, it was like ringing into the building.
05:39Four people killed, a fifth wounded,
05:41before officials say the gunman took his own life.
05:43His body found on the 33rd floor, along with his bloodstained rifle,
05:46a weapon similar to what the U.S. military uses.
05:50And tonight, the mayor baffled.
05:52The shooter inexplicably spared one life.
05:55Why did he let this woman he passed on his way to the elevator live?
06:01It baffled everyone who saw the tape.
06:04It was eerie.
06:05She walked off the elevator.
06:07He walked on the elevator.
06:09And he allowed her to pass just after he took the life,
06:12the lives of others and injured others.
06:16Police say Tamura drove across the country from Nevada in a black BMW
06:19who spotted Saturday in Colorado, Sunday in Nebraska and Iowa,
06:23and Monday in New Jersey before arriving in New York less than two hours before the shooting.
06:28His note claimed he had CTE, a brain condition associated with repeated blows to the head from playing football.
06:34We're here with standout running back Shane Tamura.
06:37Tamura played in high school in Southern California.
06:39We just had to stay disciplined and come together as a team.
06:42He did not play professional football.
06:44An autopsy is now underway.
06:46This individual had one intention,
06:49and that was to take the lives of innocent New Yorkers.
06:54And he had the capability to do it.
06:56And he had the capability to do it.
06:58Police said the shooter had a documented mental health history,
07:01and when officers searched the car,
07:03they said they found medication,
07:05along with a legally purchased .357 caliber revolver,
07:08ammunition, and two cell phones.
07:10This is the gated subdivision here in Las Vegas,
07:12where the shooter lived about 20 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip.
07:16In 2022, he received a concealed carry permit.
07:18That same year was the first of at least two calls
07:21for a person in mental health distress.
07:24Tonight, the NYPD is sending detectives to Las Vegas
07:26to determine how the shooter obtained the gun used in the attack.
07:30Sources say a co-worker at the Horseshoe Casino,
07:33where Tamura works security,
07:35purchased a piece of the rifle.
07:37Records show Tamura was arrested and charged with trespassing in 2023,
07:41but the charges were later dropped.
07:43Tonight, we're learning more about his victims.
07:45The NYPD morning officer did null Islam on the force three and a half years,
07:50who leaves behind a pregnant wife and two sons.
07:53He was doing the job that we asked him to do.
07:56He died as he lived, a hero.
08:00Security guard Alain Etienne is family writing,
08:02he was more than a brother, he was a father, a son, and a light in our lives.
08:07Julia Hyman, a graduate of Cornell,
08:09remembered as an extraordinary student.
08:11She worked on the 33rd floor.
08:12However, Wesley Lepatner, an executive at the investment firm Blackstone,
08:16also headquartered at 345 Park Avenue, was a mother of two.
08:20She's remembered as brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected.
08:26It was 24 hours ago.
08:27Right here, David, the shooter, armed with his high-powered rifle,
08:30entered this building and opened fire, killing four people,
08:33while horrified workers began stacking sofas and office furniture to block the doors.
08:38When we spoke to the mayor tonight, David,
08:40he called this an intentional, sick, twisted act of violence.
08:45David?
08:45That's a harrowing image of what they did to try to protect themselves.
08:48Aaron, thank you.
08:49There is yet another developing story as we're on the air tonight,
08:51and for late details, here's Juju Chang.
08:53David, late-breaking news tonight.
08:55A massive 8.7 magnitude earthquake rocking the coast of Russia,
08:58sparking urgent tsunami warnings for Hawaii and Alaska's Aleutian Islands.
09:03Authorities urging residents to seek higher ground.
09:05The entire west coast on watch, including Washington, Oregon, California.
09:10The tsunami watch is at the lowest level,
09:12but it's still unclear how high those waves may reach.
09:15Video just in showing boats in the widers off Hokkaido, Japan.
09:19That island also bracing.
09:20Once again, David, putting millions on alert.
09:23David?
09:24Juju, thanks.
09:25We're on tonight to severe storms and this life-threatening heat.
09:27170 million Americans on alert.
09:30Tomorrow, it'll feel like 104 degrees in Philadelphia, 103 in New York City.
09:34And tonight, some of New York City's subways overcome by the 100-degree heat index,
09:39a power outage shutting down multiple lines.
09:41ABC's Mola Lenghi right here in New York.
09:44Tonight, unrelenting heat straining the power grid,
09:47taking a toll on the nation's largest transit system.
09:50We are talking about trouble across nearly the entire alphabet of subway lines.
09:54The New York City subway hit with massive delays from a power outage during the morning commute,
09:59passengers sweltering on platforms.
10:01At this point, it would appear that the heat stressed the system a bit.
10:06The dome of extreme heat spreading south and east.
10:10Savannah felt like 113 degrees, even hotter than yesterday.
10:14Our Victor Okendo is there.
10:15They have seen it all here in Savannah over the last 24 hours.
10:19Emergency crews responding to calls to people fainting,
10:22cramping up, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
10:25In Orlando, volunteers for Meals on Wheels, delivering food to the elderly while keeping a watchful eye.
10:31We'll look for disorientation, just the inability to carry on conversation.
10:38Heat fueling storms again overnight, spawning this massive tornado near Dixon, South Dakota.
10:44Well, David, today it felt like 100 degrees here in New York City.
10:48Heat alerts are in effect for Philly, New York, and Boston again tomorrow.
10:52And heat index values could hit 104, David.
10:56Mola Lenghi with us here tonight.
10:57Mola, thank you.
10:57And President Trump, while returning to the White House on Air Force One late today,
11:01making a claim about Jeffrey Epstein.
11:03The president now telling reporters that Jeffrey Epstein stole people who worked for him at Mar-a-Lago,
11:08saying some of them were young women and that some were from Trump's spa.
11:13Here's Rachel Scott.
11:15Tonight, traveling back from Scotland on Air Force One,
11:19President Trump telling reporters sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, quote,
11:23took people who worked for me at his Mar-a-Lago resort,
11:26acknowledging some of them were young women.
11:29He took people, and because he took people, I said, don't do it anymore.
11:32You know, they work for me.
11:34And he took, beyond that, he took some others.
11:36And once he did that, that was the end to him.
11:39Were they young women?
11:40I didn't like, were they still people? I don't like it.
11:42Reporters then asking about those workers.
11:45Were some of them young women?
11:47Well, I don't want to say, but everyone knows the people that were taken.
11:52And it was the concept of taking people that worked for me is bad.
11:58But that story's been pretty well out there.
12:01And the answer is yes, they were.
12:03Yes, they were young women?
12:04What did they do?
12:05In the spa.
12:05People that work in the spa.
12:08I have a great spa.
12:09One of the best spas in the world at Mar-a-Lago.
12:12And people were taken out of the spa.
12:14Hired by him.
12:15In other words, gone.
12:17And other people would come and complain,
12:20this guy is taking people from the spa.
12:23I didn't know that.
12:24And then when I heard about it, I told him, I said, listen, we don't want you taking our people, whether it was spa or not spa.
12:30I don't want you to take people.
12:31I don't want you to take people.
12:32And he was fine.
12:34And then not too long after that, he did it again.
12:37Trump then asked if one of those young women was Virginia Giuffre, who claimed Epstein's companion, Ghislaine Maxwell, recruited her at Trump's spa when she was just 16, taking her away from Mar-a-Lago and sex trafficking her to Epstein and later allegedly to Britain's Prince Andrew.
12:56Maxwell denies that happened.
12:58Giuffre later sued Prince Andrew for sexual assault.
13:01He consistently denied her claims, but later settled the case without admitting wrongdoing.
13:06She died by suicide earlier this year.
13:09Mr. President, did one of those stolen, you know, persons that include Virginia Giuffre?
13:17I don't know.
13:19I think she worked at the spa.
13:21I think so.
13:23I think that was one of the people.
13:24He stole her.
13:27And by the way, she had no complaints about us, as you know, none whatsoever.
13:32Last week, Maxwell spent nine hours meeting with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who is President Trump's personal attorney.
13:39She is currently serving 20 years in prison.
13:42The president has not ruled out pardoning her, saying, I'm allowed to do it.
13:47Ghislaine Maxwell has also been subpoenaed by the House Oversight Committee.
13:51Today, she said she would be willing to testify if granted immunity, something that congressional leaders say they are not willing to do.
13:58She also offered to testify publicly if granted a pardon.
14:01David.
14:02Rachel Scott reporting again tonight from Scotland.
14:04Rachel, thank you.
14:05Tonight, there are new images of a person of interest in the murders of a mother and father while they were hiking with their two young daughters in a state park in Arkansas.
14:12The daughters were unhurt.
14:14Authorities releasing a photo of a man seen from the back, dressed in black right there.
14:17Police also releasing a sketch of the potential suspect.
14:20Clinton and Kristen Brink were found dead on a trail.
14:22Their daughters not hurt, as I said.
14:24Authorities believe the suspect may have been injured in the attack.
14:28When we come back tonight, a lot more news ahead.
14:29We'll take you to Italy tonight with Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa and what they're trying to do to lift an entire town.
14:36This is something.
14:37There's also images coming in right now.
14:38There's been a large explosion tonight, a huge fireball blowing through the roof.
14:42First responders now searching for multiple people still missing.
14:45They're on the scene right now.
14:46And then look at this, the harrowing close call involving a fighter jet.
14:49The pilot making a stunning maneuver, what he was trying to avoid in a moment here.
14:56There's been an explosion at a plant in Fremont, Nebraska.
14:58Video from KETV showing the blast through the roof at Horizon Biofuels.
15:03Authorities say at least three people were inside the facility at the time.
15:06Firefighters unable to enter the plant until it's ruled safe to do so.
15:10When we come back here tonight, the alarming close call involving a fighter jet tonight,
15:13what he was trying to avoid and what he did.
15:16Spectators horrified and the crowd watching.
15:19To the index, a close call involving a Spanish Air Force fighter jet.
15:23The pilot performing a sudden maneuver to avoid a potentially devastating bird strike
15:28during an air show in northern Spain.
15:30The EF-18 Hornet twisting and turning as the crowd watched.
15:33Air Force officials praising that pilot for averting a disaster.
15:37When we come back here tonight, Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa taking us to Italy.
15:41Their effort to lift an entire town and a team.
15:44And you'll be cheering too.
15:47Finally tonight here, running with the wolves.
15:49Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa returning to the country where Mark spent much of his childhood.
15:53Italy.
15:54Investing in a team and a town long forgotten.
15:57They're hoping you'll cheer on that team too.
16:00Ciao.
16:01Ciao.
16:02Ciao.
16:02On the set with Kelly and Mark.
16:04But this is no ordinary visit.
16:05You've really done it.
16:07You've really done it.
16:08You've gone and bought a team.
16:09Good to see you.
16:10Americans have known Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos since their days on All My Children.
16:14Their acting careers.
16:16Kelly becoming a fixture in the mornings.
16:18And then Mark joining her.
16:20All right, we're here.
16:21But their newest challenge.
16:22It's beautiful.
16:23To lift the hopes of an entire town back in the country where Mark grew up.
16:28You grew up in Italy for part of your childhood.
16:30The first six, seven years in Italy with your parents and speaking Italian.
16:35My mom really, I attributed her my love for this game.
16:39I remember her crying when the Italians won the World Cup in 1982.
16:43So for me to be able to share these games with her and she gives me post-match critiques
16:49and discussions were very close, but it brought us also very much closer.
16:53She's actually very good.
16:54She should be in team management.
16:56We bought a piece of this soccer team in Italy.
16:59Initially, this all seemed like a good idea.
17:01Be careful what you wish for.
17:03That should have gone in, man.
17:04The two of you root for the underdogs.
17:05Anyone who comes on this show, you take care of them.
17:08You root for them.
17:09You root for the audience.
17:10And I see real parallels with what you're doing in this small town in Italy.
17:17We've always viewed ourselves as underdogs as well.
17:19You know, on the other side of the rope a little bit.
17:21We love that about us.
17:22It's how we all found each other, I mean, really.
17:25This town in this little-known region of Italy, often forgotten, was in danger of losing their
17:31football club that they've had over a hundred years.
17:34In Italy, football is everything.
17:35Everything.
17:36Campo Basso.
17:37The team is Campo Basso, formed in 1919.
17:41The last time they soared was back in the 80s, then largely forgotten.
17:47The townspeople there cannot believe Mark and Kelly are now there because they believe in them.
17:53I just want to be a lucky charm.
17:55I don't want to be an unlucky charm.
17:56It's a great honor to be here with you.
18:01The dream.
18:02The eyes of the children.
18:03When you watch those moments of Mark walking through that town.
18:07When they saw this is the guy who believes in us again.
18:11And the Nona's from the balconies waving down to you.
18:14It's so amazing.
18:15It must have been incredible.
18:16It's incredible for them.
18:19They've given players who were once stars a second chance.
18:23And it's not just the players.
18:25They believe it.
18:25Even the guy who takes care of the pitch.
18:28He's very particular.
18:32There's a moment where you're flat out on the pitch.
18:36This is like my dream.
18:39You must feel sort of the weight of the connection now.
18:41This town 4,000 miles away.
18:44The weight is an honor.
18:46It really, really is.
18:47Oh, thank you so much.
18:48Say hi to Kelly for me.
18:50People have been fans for 40, 50 years.
18:53Come up to you and say thank you.
18:55And then conversely see the little kids.
18:57Who are just now like wearing the jerseys.
19:00And having something to root for.
19:02It's not work.
19:03Again, it's an honor.
19:04And we really want to win for them.
19:07Obviously we want to win.
19:08But we really want to win for the town.
19:10Well, anyone who knows the two of you.
19:12They're going to win.
19:13They're going to keep winning.
19:14How are you on the pitch?
19:16We're recruiting.
19:17I can take care of the pitch.
19:20Running with the Wolves premieres tonight and Thursday night, 7 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.
19:24You can then stream it on ESPN+.
