01:49From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight.
01:56Good evening.
01:56Thanks for joining us on this Saturday.
01:58I'm Whit Johnson.
01:59We begin tonight with new details in that deadly attack in Atlanta.
02:02Police identifying the suspect who opened fire near the campuses of the CDC and Emory University.
02:08The gunman perched on the rooftop of a CVS, shooting and killing a police officer.
02:14New images tonight showing multiple bullet holes piercing the windows at CDC headquarters.
02:19At least four buildings were hit, but no employees or visitors injured.
02:23Students at Emory University were told to shelter in place.
02:26Police officer David Rose was killed.
02:29The 33-year-old Marine veteran leaves behind a pregnant wife and two children.
02:34The attack prompted a massive police response.
02:36Authorities say the shooter was armed with a long gun and three other firearms were recovered at the scene.
02:42The suspect, 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White, was also killed.
02:46Investigators have not revealed a motive.
02:48ABC's Faith Abube leads us off from Atlanta.
02:51Tonight, authorities revealing the identity of the suspected killer after a shootout near Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control.
03:02One DeKalb County police officer killed in the gunfire.
03:05This officer responded to the call as he did, as he was trained to do.
03:09And during that incident, he received gunfire and he lost his life in this incident.
03:15The suspect also killed in the incident.
03:17The alleged shooter, Patrick Joseph White, a 30-year-old man from Kennesaw, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta.
03:24Neighbors say the suspect occasionally did odd jobs around the neighborhood and lived here for years.
03:29We heard the story on the news, and I just never thought that it would have been the guy right down the street.
03:34That shooting, starting just before 5 p.m. on Friday, multiple gunshots reported at this CVS.
03:40You can see they've boarded up the front door where gunfire punched through the glass.
03:44The CVS is directly across the street from the CDC.
03:47Some of the bullets striking several buildings on the property, including that one, bullet holes dotting the windows.
03:54Emory University sending out this tweet, urging students to run, hide, fight.
04:00Sources say the suspected shooter was on the roof of that CVS.
04:04Police arriving at the scene, confronting the shooter.
04:07The suspect allegedly turning and firing at police, killing 33-year-old David Rose,
04:12a Marine veteran who joined the DeKalb Police Department less than a year ago,
04:17leaving behind a pregnant wife and two children.
04:20This evening, there is a wife without a husband.
04:25There are three children, one unborn without a father.
04:29The suspect later found dead inside that building.
04:32He had been struck by gunfire.
04:34We do not know at this time whether that was from officers or if it was self-inflicted.
04:39And with the director of the CDC debriefing with staff members this morning about that shooting,
04:45neighbors of that suspect telling me he was just a regular guy with some quirks about him.
04:49I spoke with his father.
04:50He declines a comment on the shooting.
04:52Investigators have yet to reveal a motive.
04:54Whit?
04:54Still a lot of questions in this case.
04:56Faith Abube, thank you.
04:58Now to the dry and hot conditions fueling dozens of wildfires in the West.
05:02Fire crews making progress against Southern California's so-called Canyon Fire.
05:07Evacuation orders lifted and the fire is now 28 percent contained.
05:11But the threat from other wildfires is far from over.
05:14Here's ABC's Alex Stone.
05:15Tonight, as extreme heat and low humidity bear down on the West, it's a race against time
05:22for firefighters to control flames before even hotter weather arrives next week.
05:26Firefighter safety is utmost importance to us.
05:29Making sure that the men and women out there stay hydrated.
05:32At the Canyon Fire in Castaic in northern Los Angeles County, firefighters battled intense flames to save homes.
05:39In these canyons, it's like this everywhere.
05:41This fire, immense.
05:43All that's left behind is this gray and white ash.
05:46Firefighters gaining containment now with 5,300 acres burned.
05:50In San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, the massive Gifford Fire has scorched over 100,000 acres of mostly remote land.
05:59Over 3,600 personnel are battling the fire.
06:02In San Diego, progress is being made on the Roadrunner Fire.
06:06Containment numbers are rising.
06:07And in Meeker, Colorado, the Elk and Lee fires closing in on the town of just 2,300 residents.
06:14Poor Meeker.
06:15They're just, everybody's freaking out and it's very scary for everyone.
06:19All of Colorado's firefighting aircraft are deployed to the state's western slope.
06:24In Nebraska, severe storms turning deadly.
06:27At least one person was killed by a falling tree.
06:30Power knocked out to tens of thousands.
06:33And we're back here in Castaic tonight.
06:35Firefighters say they are making great progress.
06:38Containment numbers are going up and those evacuation orders have been lifted.
06:41Witt.
06:42Some encouraging news.
06:43Alex Stone, thank you.
06:44And more than 40 million Americans are under heat alerts.
06:47Let's get right to meteorologist Danny Beckstrom from our New York station, WABC.
06:51And Danny, we're dealing with the heat but also dangerous storms on the move tonight.
06:54Right, we're going to start with those strong to severe thunderstorms firing up as we speak
07:00tonight, Witt.
07:00This is in parts of the plains to the upper Midwest.
07:02Let's get right to the radar.
07:04A severe thunderstorm watch in portions of Colorado and Nebraska until 9 p.m. local time
07:08with large hail and gusts up to 70 miles per hour possible.
07:11This same system slides in storms capable of producing flooding downpours from Kansas to
07:15Wisconsin as well.
07:16The flood watch there due to a level three out of four risk for flash flooding tonight through
07:20Sunday.
07:20This is considered a significant risk from Kansas City to Madison.
07:24Additional rounds of heavy rain keep that flood threat in play for this area through
07:27Monday.
07:27Heat becomes the headline in the Northeast.
07:29Temperature is turning up into the work week.
07:31I hope you're ready for 90s to make a comeback here in New York City, Witt.
07:33We'll see those by Monday.
07:35Okay, we'll prepare for that.
07:36Danny Beckstrom, as always, thank you.
07:38Now to the U.S. meeting with allies ahead of President Trump's high-stakes summit with Russian
07:42President Vladimir Putin.
07:44Vice President J.D. Vance met with Ukrainian and European officials earlier today in Kent, England.
07:49What we're learning about those talks and reaction from President Zelensky, who was left out of the
07:55upcoming summit.
07:56Here's ABC's senior White House correspondent, Selina Way.
08:00Tonight, concern across Europe as President Trump prepares to meet with Russia's Vladimir
08:04Putin for a historic summit just days from now without Ukraine at the table.
08:10Vice President J.D. Vance meeting European allies and Ukrainian officials today in the U.K.
08:15A U.S. official telling ABC News the talks produced significant progress towards President
08:20Trump's goal of bringing an end to the war in Ukraine.
08:23This after Trump missed his own deadline to impose punishing sanctions on Russia.
08:28Instead, Trump agreeing to a face-to-face meeting, marking Putin's first with a major Western
08:33leader since Russia invaded Ukraine more than three years ago and his first visit to the U.S.
08:39in 10 years.
08:40Zelensky holding a flurry of calls with European leaders today, warning that everyone can clearly
08:46see Putin's tactics.
08:47He fears sanctions and is doing everything to bail on them.
08:51He wants to gain territorial spoils for the second time already.
08:55French President Macron warning the future of Ukraine cannot be decided without the Ukrainians.
09:00This after Trump suggested a peace deal would involve exchanging territory.
09:04There will be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both.
09:10And according to the Wall Street Journal, Europe and Ukraine have presented its own peace plan
09:15to top U.S. officials, including the vice president and secretary of state.
09:19It stipulates that ceding any land must be backed by ironclad security guarantees, including
09:25potential NATO membership for Ukraine.
09:27The plan rejects Russia's proposal to hand over Ukrainian-held parts of the Donetsk region,
09:33according to the Journal.
09:34The summit now set for Alaska, territory the U.S. bought from the Russian Empire more than
09:40150 years ago.
09:42Now a place where the U.S. is closely monitoring the military actions of Russia and China.
09:47The Arctic becoming increasingly vital as global temperatures rise, melting the polar ice sheets
09:52and opening up new sea lanes and shipping routes, vital to all three countries.
09:57And tonight, the White House says that President Trump is still open to a trilateral summit with
10:03both Putin and Zelensky.
10:05But for now, they're moving ahead with just Putin.
10:07Meanwhile, the Kremlin has agreed to these talks in Alaska and have already invited President
10:12Trump to meet next in Russia.
10:14Selena Wang, thank you.
10:16And tune into this week tomorrow morning.
10:18Jonathan Karl speaks with NATO Secretary General Mark Ruda on President Trump and Putin's upcoming
10:23summit in Alaska.
10:25The White House is escalating its battle with Harvard University, now threatening to seize
10:29the school's lucrative patents worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
10:33Let's bring in ABC's Morgan Norwood.
10:35And Morgan, this is just the latest move in a months-long feud.
10:40Hi, Whit.
10:40Yes, this standoff between Harvard University and the Trump administration is certainly escalating
10:45tonight.
10:45Trump administration now threatening to seize or license some of Harvard's most valuable
10:51patents.
10:51In a letter to Harvard's president, the Commerce Secretary, ordering an immediate review of
10:55federally funded research programs, claiming that the university breached contract requirements.
11:00Now, Harvard tonight is denying this allegation and sharply condemning the move, calling it retaliatory.
11:06And a statement to ABC News writing, technologies and patents developed at Harvard are life-saving
11:11and industry-redefining.
11:13Now, according to the university's website, it holds more than 5,800 patents and maintains
11:18more than 900 technology licenses with more than 650 industry partners.
11:24All of this comes, though, after the White House froze billions in federal funding, accusing
11:28Harvard of civil rights violations for its handling of anti-Semitism on campus.
11:33Negotiations there are still underway.
11:36But Harvard is saying that it takes anti-Semitism seriously and will continue fighting it with urgency.
11:41But look, Whit, we have seen this before.
11:43Just this week, Trump demanding $1 billion from UCLA.
11:47And then just last month, Columbia University agreeing to a more than $220 million settlement.
11:53Whit.
11:53Morgan Norwood for us tonight.
11:56Now to that frightening scene during an NFL preseason game between the Detroit Lions and
12:00Atlanta Falcons.
12:01Lions safety.
12:02Maurice Norris taken off the field after a hit to the head.
12:05Visibly shaken players gathering in prayer.
12:09The team's running out the clock instead of resuming play.
12:12Tonight, new details on his condition.
12:14Here's ABC's Olivia Rubin.
12:17Detroit Lions defensive back Maurice Norris is recovering in the hospital tonight.
12:22Oh, there's a big hit.
12:23After this terrifying injury that brought last night's preseason game to an end.
12:28Norris going in for a tackle in the fourth quarter against the Atlanta Falcons.
12:32But during contact, his head appearing to snap back.
12:36Emergency staff treating Norris for 20 minutes before an ambulance rushed him to a nearby hospital.
12:42At this point, per New York, this game is suspended.
12:45Both teams emotional.
12:47Coming together after the game was called off.
12:50And now they're just going to come in to pray.
12:52Oh my gosh.
12:53Today, Norris posting on Instagram, quote,
12:55I'm all good.
12:56Appreciate all the check-ins and love.
12:59It's just an eye-opener.
13:00It hits, you know, it hits a little different.
13:03And, you know, it puts things in perspective.
13:05With a few short weeks until the regular season, head injury is a concern in the NFL.
13:10The NFL says concussions during the 2024 season were down 17% from the year before
13:16and the largest drop since 2021.
13:19This season, the NFL is saying they're continuing to try to limit avoidable head contact
13:24as one of its safety priorities.
13:26There's been no update today on Norris' medical conditions, specifically what that diagnosis
13:32may be and, of course, when he may get back out on the field.
13:37Whit.
13:37I know many looking forward to his full recovery.
13:39Olivia Rubin, thank you.
13:41Next tonight, Mexico's president is rejecting the use of American military forces in that country.
13:47This follows reports that President Trump has directed the Pentagon to go after Latin American
13:51drug cartels, the administration labeled as foreign terrorist groups.
13:56Here's ABC's Cristian Cordero.
13:58Tonight, Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum adamant the U.S. will not use military force
14:03in Mexico in its crackdown on drug cartels.
14:06Estados Unidos no va a venir a Mexico con los militares.
14:09Sheinbaum responding to President Trump's directive ordering the Pentagon to prepare options for the
14:15possible use of military force against certain drug cartels.
14:19Two U.S. officials tell ABC News Trump is targeting cartels they labeled foreign terrorist
14:24organizations.
14:25The president dismissing questions on any possible plan.
14:29Latin America's got a lot of cartels.
14:31They've got a lot of drugs flowing.
14:32So, you know, we want to protect our country.
14:35According to one U.S. official, the use of military force against cartels is not imminent.
14:41The president's directive, the latest escalation in his vow to crack down on the flow of drugs
14:46and immigration.
14:46Trump, through both terms, has sent thousands of National Guard troops to the southern border
14:51and, more recently, to Southern California.
14:54The administration in February designated eight cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
14:59U.S. officials argue the administration cannot treat them like local street gangs.
15:04They have weaponry that looks like what terrorists, in some cases, armies have.
15:08They control territory in many cases.
15:10Now, the designation, a foreign terrorist organization, gives the government more power,
15:15but it does not single-handedly allow for the use of military force.
15:19So, Witt, it's unclear what exactly the government is considering here and what can be done legally.
15:25Witt?
15:25Christiane Cordero.
15:26Our thanks to you tonight.
15:27Now, to that massive protest in Israel.
15:30Tens of thousands rallying for the hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.
15:35This after the Israeli cabinet approved the prime minister's plans for the IDF to take over Gaza City.
15:41A major highway was briefly shut down, some calling for a national strike to, quote,
15:46shut the country down.
15:47There is still much more ahead on World News Tonight this Saturday,
15:50including a spectacular homecoming for a NASA crew after months in space
15:54and the woman who just made Major League history.
16:00Next tonight, chilling video just released of a workplace attack in Phoenix.
16:05It shows truck driver Zane Hammond firing a shotgun toward one of his former employers who was not hurt.
16:11Another manager then overpowered Hammond, disarmed him,
16:15and put him in a chokehold until police arrived.
16:18This happened nearly two years ago.
16:20Hammond pleaded guilty to attempted murder last month and was sentenced to 29 years in prison.
16:25A chaotic scene overnight in New York's busy Times Square.
16:29Bystanders ran for safety as gunshots rang out.
16:32Three people were shot.
16:33All are expected to recover.
16:35Police say it started with a fight between two teenagers.
16:38A 17-year-old suspect was taken into custody.
16:40When we come back, the Trailblazer, who's earned her spot in Major League history.
16:48To the index now, and mission accomplished for SpaceX Crew-10,
16:52their Dragon capsule splashed down today off Southern California.
16:56On board were American astronauts Anne McClain and Nicole Ayers,
17:00along with crew members from Japan and Russia.
17:02They spent five months at the space station.
17:05Their replacements arrived there last week.
17:07In Atlanta today, a first for Major League Baseball.
17:11And with that first pitch, Jen Powell has officially made history.
17:16Jen Powell became the first woman to umpire a regular season game in the majors
17:20as the Braves hosted the Miami Marlins.
17:23Powell worked more than 1,200 games in the minor leagues over 10 seasons before getting the call-up.
17:29Still ahead here, America's Strong, World War II veterans,
17:32and the reunion, 81 years in the making.
17:37Finally tonight, America's Strong.
17:40Two World War II veterans brought together in the most unlikely way.
17:44A remarkable reunion, decades in the making.
17:48101-year-old Tom Fitzpatrick served in Italy during World War II.
17:52I was a radio navigator on a B-17 bomber.
17:56A few years ago, Tom met college student Tyler Boland,
18:00who was on a mission to interview all living World War II veterans.
18:03Tom believed he was the last living member of his unit,
18:06until recently, when Tyler found Stanley Eisenberg, also 101.
18:12I was what they called the ground crew armorer.
18:15Stanley and Tom both served in the 15th Air Force, 96th Bomb Squadron, 2nd Bomb Group.
18:21Thanks to Tyler, the two reconnecting for the first time 81 years later.
18:26Hi, it's Edgar.
18:27Amazingly, they were living only 15 minutes apart.
18:30Put him over in that big...
18:31Yeah.
18:32Swapping war stories.
18:33And all of a sudden, rat-tat-tat-tat, his machine guns go off and fire into
18:39where we were standing as close as I am to him.
18:43Oh, jeez.
18:44Nobody got hit, I hope.
18:45No, because the two of us were a mile away in 30 seconds.
18:50After all this time, a chance to shake hands,
18:54all because of a young man with a passion for history.
18:57Just meeting somebody that was in my outfit was a special treat.
19:02They haven't seen each other in 81 years, so that experience is really special.
19:06People think you forget what happened 80 years ago,
19:10what I did and what other people like Stanley did.
19:13I'll try to keep those memories alive.
19:15So God bless us all.
19:17American heroes, what a special moment.
19:19I'm with Johnson in New York.
19:21Have a great night.
19:22David Muir, the most watched newscast in America.
