01:58From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight.
02:08Good evening, everyone.
02:09Thanks so much for joining us on this Sunday.
02:11I'm Lindsay Davis.
02:12A showdown in Texas.
02:14Democrats leave the state to delay a bill that redraws the state's congressional map.
02:18But we do begin tonight with gusty winds, bone-dry conditions, and scorching heat igniting multiple wildfires across the West.
02:25More than 30 uncontained large wildfires are now burning in 11 states, including California, Arizona, and Utah.
02:33In Riverside, California, ground and air crews are just starting to get the upper hand in the Oak Fire, now 50% contained.
02:40Wildfires north of the border in Canada, creating a haze over the skies from Minnesota to Maine.
02:46The smoke is now pushing east.
02:48And new video of the 3.0 magnitude earthquake that shook buildings in parts of the tri-state area overnight.
02:54Our weather team is standing by with the forecast.
02:57But first, Melissa Adan leads us off from California.
03:00Multiple growing wildfires burning across the West tonight, fueled by gusty winds, bone-dry conditions, and scorching heat.
03:08Evacuations in place in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.
03:12This trail camera capturing the fast-moving Gifford Fire, now burning about 40,000 acres and injuring at least three people.
03:19In Riverside, east of Los Angeles, ground and air crews getting the upper hand on the Oak Fire, stopping the forward progression.
03:28Flames and thick smoke spreading across parts of Arizona after authorities arrested a driver for allegedly starting the Kirkland Fire.
03:36Communities in the surrounding area now preparing to evacuate.
03:39The dangerous fire weather impacting parts of Utah and Colorado, where humidity is below 10 percent and wind gusts are topping 35 miles per hour.
03:49This is a tough one.
03:51It's been a long time since we've had a fire of this magnitude.
03:54Hazy skies blanketing cities like Chicago and Minneapolis.
03:58Not from those flames out west, but the more than 700 Canadian wildfires now triggering air quality alerts in the Midwest and now northeast.
04:06We could see some smoky haze mixed back in with the sunshine on Monday.
04:10The concerns come after the tri-state area was jolted by a magnitude 3.0 earthquake overnight, just miles outside New York City in Hasbrook Heights, New Jersey.
04:21No reports of damages or injuries.
04:25Lindsay, red flag warnings are in place across the southwest.
04:28That's where these fires are burning.
04:30So those conditions plus this extreme heat are only making it more challenging for firefighters.
04:35Lindsay.
04:35Melissa, thank you.
04:37And let's get right to meteorologist Danny Beckstrom from our New York station, WABC.
04:41Danny, good evening.
04:42Tell us about the dangerous and now deadly flash flood threat that you're tracking in the southeast.
04:48Yeah, the extremes, right, Lindsay?
04:50The southwest, too hot, too dry.
04:52Well, in the southeast, we're seeing too much rain too quickly.
04:55This morning, the bullseye in eastern Alabama, where tragically one person lost their life in the dangerous flooding in Cleburne County.
05:01The heavy rain and flash flooding continue in the region tonight with flood watches in place from Atlanta down to Tallahassee.
05:07Downpours take us through the overnight hours with a little Monday morning before another round fires up by midday.
05:13In the southern plains, severe storms on deck, bringing the threat for damaging wind, large hail and a few isolated tornadoes into tonight, especially for the Texas panhandle.
05:21Well, meanwhile, in the northeast, air quality alerts are expanding as wildfire smoke shifts east, now in place from Minnesota to Maine for sensitive groups.
05:29And that does include here in New York City.
05:31We were just added to the alert with that haze moving in into tomorrow.
05:34Lindsay?
05:35Danny, thank you.
05:36Now to Texas Republicans advancing a plan to revise their congressional map in an attempt to give the GOP an edge in the midterms.
05:43Tonight, Texas Democrats left the state to delay passage of the bill.
05:47This is some governors are crying foul and others are threatening to take similar actions across several states.
05:53ABC's senior White House correspondent Selena Wang has the very latest.
05:56A high-stakes showdown in Texas tonight as House Democrats flee the state to delay a controversial Republican-led push to redraw the congressional map in cities like Austin, Houston and Dallas.
06:10The proposed map could flip five seats from likely wins by Democrats to Republicans.
06:16The move could help them keep their razor-thin House majority by carving up cities like Deep Blue Austin into multiple red districts,
06:23leaving just one Democratic stronghold in the center.
06:27That new map would force two sitting Democrats, Congressman Greg Kassar and Lloyd Doggett, to run against each other.
06:34If Donald Trump is allowed to violate the Voting Rights Act and strip voters of their rights here in Austin and in Texas,
06:40soon enough it'll spread across America.
06:42Governor Abbott included redistricting in the state's special session because of what he said were race-based constitutional concerns from the Department of Justice.
06:51Texas Democrats furious heading to Chicago tonight, but walking out can only delay passage of the bill, not stop it.
07:00House districts are redrawn every 10 years, but President Trump has urged Texas Republicans to do it now ahead of the 2026 midterms when control of Congress will be up for grabs.
07:11On Texas, how many more seats do you want the Republicans to draw?
07:16Five.
07:16This is an authoritarian move by the White House to try to make sure that they can rig the election, the midterm elections, in 2026.
07:25Some Democratic governors are threatening to retaliate.
07:28Gavin Newsom now pushing a special election in California to redraw the map in Democrats' favor ahead of those 2026 midterms.
07:36And, Lindsey, if this map passes through the Texas House and Senate, it's just the beginning.
07:42It's expected to kick off a legal battle and a political arms race.
07:46Other states, both red and blue, could do the same, redraw their own maps for political gain.
07:51Lindsey?
07:51Lots more ahead on that front.
07:53Selena, thank you.
07:54Next tonight, as millions of Americans prepare for back-to-school shopping,
07:58the threat of more tariff turmoil is rattling some consumers and creating a budget crunch for others.
08:03And it's not just school supplies.
08:05The prices of everyday goods, from coffee to medicines, are expected to increase.
08:08Here's ABC's Christiane Cordero.
08:11Tonight, with new tariffs set to go into effect this week, millions of Americans are bracing for impact.
08:17A recent report shows the tariffs implemented by President Trump are expected to cost the average American household an additional $2,400 this year.
08:26The prices of everyday goods, including bananas, coffee, medicines, and wine, all expected to increase.
08:32Clothing and shoes are expected to go up, too.
08:3597% of the apparel sold in the U.S. is made in Asia.
08:39And it comes as back-to-school season gets underway.
08:42More than a dozen states offering families some welcome relief, with a sales tax holiday on certain items.
08:48Shoppers in Iowa taking advantage of the deal this weekend.
08:51It's a little bit cheaper for families to get the things they need, so I feel like it's important.
08:58The trade war also impacting small businesses like Ann's Diner in Port Huron, Michigan, which relies on a boost from Canadians crossing the bridge to eat breakfast before shopping at American malls.
09:09I have not seen a French-Canadian in here all summer, and we are a tourist town.
09:14Ann Legge telling our Steve Osunzami this has been her worst summer in 30 years.
09:19Actually, you know, quite a funny thing is I think I made more money during COVID than this summer.
09:25The administration insists the tariffs will reshape global trade and boost American manufacturing long term, today adding a number of major trade deals are locked in and unlikely to change.
09:37We have eight deals that cover about 55% of world GDP with our biggest trading partners, the EU and Japan and Korea and so on.
09:46And I expect that those matters are more or less locked in.
09:50Some economists warn the combination of elevated tariffs and slow hiring could push the U.S. towards stagflation.
09:57Last month, inflation ticked up higher than expected, while a new jobs report showed hiring was weaker than expected.
10:03And, Lindsay, now all eyes turn to the stock market tomorrow.
10:07Lindsay?
10:08Christiane, thank you.
10:09Next tonight, the urgent manhunt for a suspect after a quadruple murder in Tennessee.
10:13Two men are now charged with aiding the suspect.
10:16Let's bring in ABC's Morgan Norwood.
10:18Morgan, what are you learning tonight?
10:21Well, Lindsay, that manhunt, as you just mentioned, stretching into a fourth day down in Tennessee.
10:25And tonight, police have arrested and charged a second accomplice, alleged accomplice, with helping murder suspect Andre Austin Drummond get away.
10:3329-year-old Giovante Thomas and 28-year-old Tanaka Brown both in custody tonight.
10:38Police are pressing them for answers as this search intensifies for Drummond, who they say is considered armed and dangerous.
10:44He's accused of killing four family members, among them a young couple.
10:48Their seven-month-old baby found hours later abandoned in a car seat at a stranger's yard.
10:53That baby is safe tonight.
10:54And, Lindsay, that reward growing once again.
10:56Authorities are offering $17,500 for tips leading to Drummond's arrest.
11:02Lindsay?
11:02Morgan, thank you.
11:04And there are new details tonight in a separate manhunt, this one in Montana.
11:07Today, prosecutors released the identities of the victims in Friday's mass shooting at a bar in Anaconda.
11:14They include Nancy Kelly, who was tending the bar that morning.
11:17All four victims were between the ages of 59 and 74.
11:21Meanwhile, the search for suspect Michael Paul Brown is now on its third day.
11:25Authorities are concerned that he might come back to town.
11:28Overseas now to Rome and Pope Leo, greeted like a rock star in delivering a powerful message to more than one million young Catholics.
11:35The so-called Catholic Woodstock was the American pontiff's first major appeal to the next generation.
11:41Why, it's critical for the church's future.
11:44Here's ABC's Marcus Moore.
11:47Tonight, the Vatican hoping scenes like this, a crowd of more than a million young people from nearly 150 countries,
11:53will energize the church's push to appeal to the next generation of Catholics.
11:57The Catholic Youth Festival on the outskirts of Rome, the highlight of the Vatican's 2025 Holy Year, this week's Youth Jubilee.
12:06Pope Leo is the Catholic Church's first American pope, something special for the many Americans there.
12:11Here, you could see American flags waving above the massive crowd at Tor Vergata Field.
12:16It was beautiful.
12:17It was powerful to receive his blessing and to know that he is our father.
12:22He is our holy father.
12:22Pope Leo calling for peace amidst the man-made tragedies unfolding in conflicts across the globe.
12:30His message, one of hope and healing for the world's youth.
12:34We are with the young people of Gaza.
12:39We are with the young people of Ukraine.
12:42Lindsay, Pope Leo clearly making an effort to connect with young people.
12:46There was today's mass with more than a million people.
12:49And then just a day ago, he met with young Catholic influencers, encouraging them to share the church's message of hope.
12:55Lindsay.
12:56Telling the young people a different world is possible.
12:59Marcus, thank you.
13:00Now to renewed push for a hostage deal in Gaza.
13:03It comes as hunger and starvation ravaged the region.
13:06A humanitarian aid organization says it was targeted by the Israeli artillery overnight.
13:11Let's get right to ABC's chief foreign correspondent, Ian Pannell, in Tel Aviv tonight.
13:16Ian, what can you tell us about this new deal?
13:20Yeah, so Steve Wyckoff met with the families of hostages still being held.
13:24It was a closed-door meeting, but we've managed to obtain some of the audio from it.
13:29What he told them was, we are very, very close to a solution to end this war.
13:33What does that mean?
13:34Well, he says that Hamas has said that they are prepared to demilitarize,
13:38which is frankly mystifying because publicly, at least, that's not what they're saying.
13:42He also says that there's a plan to bring all hostages home at once.
13:46Again, mystifying because they're struggling to bring even small groups home over the last few weeks.
13:52An Israeli official also telling ABC News tonight that Prime Minister Netanyahu
13:57is pushing to expand the military operation, to release the hostages through a military solution.
14:02Is that America's solution?
14:04We don't know at the moment.
14:05The hostage forum that represents the families, says Netanyahu, is leading Israel to doom.
14:10Lindsay?
14:10And Ian, while we have you, Wyckoff is also planning to meet with Russian officials
14:14as a deadline for a ceasefire approaches.
14:17What can you tell us about that?
14:20Yeah, we don't know the details.
14:22The White House has been strangely silent about this.
14:24He did meet Vladimir Putin back in April,
14:26so it's reasonable to expect that he's going to meet officials again,
14:30pressing the case for a ceasefire that President Trump has been pressing,
14:34and perhaps discussing the president's deadline with the threat of sanctions
14:37unless Russia agrees to a ceasefire.
14:39That deadline comes into effect next Saturday.
14:42There's so far no signs of Russia being concerned by it,
14:46escalating its bombing of civilian areas,
14:48which the president recently described as disgusting.
14:51Trump also recognizing the limitations of trying to pressure Russia with sanctions,
14:55saying, I don't know that sanctions bother him.
14:58Lindsay?
14:59Putin seeming to shrug them off at this point.
15:01Ian, thank you.
15:02Back here in the U.S., a family is demanding answers
15:04after the tragic death of a three-year-old in Alabama.
15:07A contractor for the state agency responsible for child welfare
15:11has been charged after he was allegedly left in a hot car
15:14for five hours when temperatures stopped 100 degrees.
15:17More now from ABC's Rena Roy.
15:20Tonight, a demand for answers over the death of three-year-old Katoria Starks Jr.,
15:25who police say was left in a hot car for hours in Birmingham, Alabama.
15:29The young boy, whose nickname was KJ, laid to rest this weekend.
15:34It hurts. It hurts bad.
15:36It hurts deeply because they failed him,
15:40and it makes me feel like we failed him as well.
15:43Authorities say officers were called to the scene of an unresponsive child
15:46back on July 22nd, saying KJ, who was in foster care,
15:50was accidentally left in the car while in the custody of a contracted worker
15:54through the Alabama Department of Human Resources.
15:57That day, a heat advisory was in effect with temperatures in the 90s,
16:01the heat index topping 100 degrees for several hours.
16:05The Starks family attorney saying the car was like a furnace
16:07and that KJ was left inside for more than five hours
16:11while the caretaker was at home after taking him on his weekly visit
16:15to see his biological father, 54-year-old Kella Stanford, arrested
16:19and charged with leaving a child unattended in a car
16:23as a person for hire responsible for their care,
16:26a felony that carries up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
16:29Please stand with us until this investigation is over
16:32so we can see justice and to make sure this never happened to another child.
16:37ABC News has reached out to the Alabama Department of Human Resources
16:40for comment, but we have not yet heard back.
16:43And, Lindsay, so far this year, at least 19 children have died in hot cars,
16:48seven of those deaths last month alone.
16:50Lindsay?
16:51Rena, thank you.
16:52Still ahead on World News tonight this Sunday,
16:54the death of a beloved Hollywood actress.
16:56A traffic stop turns into an arrest on felony charges for an NFL linebacker
17:01and a moment not seen since the 1400s.
17:05Next tonight, felony charges against an NFL linebacker.
17:11The Chargers' Denzel Perryman now held without bail in Los Angeles.
17:15Authorities say they found two assault-style rifles among five firearms in his car
17:19during a Friday night traffic stop.
17:21The Chargers say that they're still gathering information.
17:23His agent says Perryman's advisers are working with legal counsel.
17:28In eastern Russia, more of nature's power on display.
17:31A volcano Russian scientists say was dormant 600 years erupted overnight.
17:37Hours later, an earthquake triggered tsunami warnings.
17:40Scientists say both events may be connected to last week's 8.8 magnitude quake in the region.
17:46When we come back, the United States makes a big splash at the World Swimming Championships.
17:53Back now with some sad news from the world of entertainment.
17:56Lonnie Anderson, best known for her role in the comedy WKRP in Cincinnati, has died.
18:01Anderson made it big when she took on the role of sassy receptionist Jennifer Marlowe
18:05at the fictional Cincinnati radio station.
18:08She was also known for her personal life, which included a marriage to fellow sex symbol Burt Reynolds.
18:13Lonnie Anderson was 79.
18:15At the World Swimming Championships, the U.S. saved its best for last.
18:18The women's 4x100 medley team broke its own world record in today's final race in Singapore.
18:24Reagan Smith, Kate Douglas, Gretchen Walsh, and Tori Husk bested the old mark by 29 hundredths of a second.
18:31When we come back, a real case of sister power on display.
18:38Finally, America strong.
18:40The Bible says I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
18:44One nun took it to heart.
18:46Sister Pat Farrell has always prayed for strength.
18:49It's just that now she does it a little more literally.
18:52I like to think that I'm carrying on part of our tradition in service of others for the gospel.
18:58The 72-year-old nun is a member of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael in California.
19:04She lives here at this convent and has just taken up weightlifting.
19:08Press.
19:08For the past four months, faith and fitness for her have gone hand-in-hand here at The Yard, a gym she frequents in San Francisco.
19:18And they really grew over these four months. It's really amazing.
19:21Her gym mates and trainers are impressed.
19:24Absolutely blown away.
19:26Man, that she made an impact.
19:27These are my gym bros.
19:28She initially started training to improve her health, but she's now taking it to the next level,
19:33competing in her first powerlifting competition, benching 77 pounds and deadlifting 160 pounds,
19:42which is more than her body weight, winning first place for Masters women in her weight class.
19:50Perhaps answered prayer.
19:52Thanks so much for watching.
19:53David is back here tomorrow.
19:54I'm Lindsay Davis.
19:55Good night.
19:58David Muir, the most watched newscast in America.
