02:16Good evening.
02:17Thank you for joining us on this Saturday.
02:18I'm Mary Bruce in for Whit Johnson.
02:21We begin tonight with crews battling raging wildfires in California's wine country.
02:25And more than 50 million people on alert for dangerous heat in the West this weekend.
02:30Those fast-moving flames are triggering evacuation orders for Napa Valley residents.
02:34The so-called picket fire scorching nearly 5,000 acres since it broke out on Thursday.
02:40The blaze only at 7 percent containment.
02:43And then there's the extreme heat.
02:45The sun baking Los Angeles.
02:47Thunderstorms are bringing some relief.
02:49But lightning strikes have ignited several smaller fires.
02:53Our weather team is standing by with the forecast.
02:55But first, ABC's Jacqueline Lee leads us off tonight.
02:58Tonight, evacuation orders in parts of California wine country are growing as millions in the West face blistering heat and dry conditions.
03:07In the midst of California's wildfire season, more than 4,500 acres burning in Napa County.
03:13The picket fire only 7 percent contained as crews battle the flames around the clock.
03:18Helicopters dropping water and flame retardant as a wall of smoke rises behind them.
03:23Residents in Napa County rushing to get out.
03:26It's definitely scary when there's fire down here.
03:28Luckily, there wasn't too much wind.
03:30Fire officials say the extreme heat is posing a unique danger to crews on the ground.
03:36What challenges does this extreme heat pose on your firefighters?
03:41They're hiking steep terrain.
03:43They're fighting fire.
03:45And so that heat is definitely going to wear them down.
03:49This comes as Southern California swelters under a heat wave with triple-digit temperatures,
03:55with red flag warnings and an extreme heat warning for much of Los Angeles County.
03:59You get a wet towel over your head.
04:01You drink water, you know, like every five minutes.
04:03And even as scattered thunderstorms are bringing some relief to the heat,
04:06authorities say lightning strikes there have sparked several smaller fires.
04:11Ahead of this weekend, California Governor Gavin Newsom pre-deploying firefighting resources
04:17throughout Los Angeles, given the conditions.
04:20Meanwhile, crews here on the ground say they are ready to jump in at any point.
04:24Mary?
04:24Okay, Jacqueline, thank you.
04:26Meanwhile, as Hurricane Aaron moves out to sea,
04:28beaches in New York and North Carolina are reopening.
04:31But big waves and dangerous rip currents remain,
04:34keeping lifeguards busy at New York's Rockaway Beach.
04:37Several swimmers there rescued.
04:39WABC's Anthony Carlo was there.
04:41Anthony?
04:43Well, Mary, this is one last hurrah for many people before school starts.
04:46They're trying to get out to the beach and soak up the sun and enjoy the water.
04:50But the problem is, up and down the East Coast,
04:53we're still seeing big waves and dangerous rip currents lingering in many areas.
04:58This boat was capsized by high surf at Maine's York Beach,
05:02and that sailor had to be saved by fire and rescue swimmers.
05:06Now, Aaron is gone, but those dangerous ocean conditions persist,
05:11fueling a high risk of dangerous rip currents along much of the coastline through the weekend.
05:17Here on New York's Rockaway Beach, we witnessed lifeguards rescue multiple swimmers
05:21who were caught up in a rip current and swept away from shore.
05:25Lifeguards had to extend a line into the water to help them pull those distressed swimmers out.
05:31And rescues just like that speak to the dangers lifeguards face as they reopen beaches
05:36and beachgoers come to try to capture one last summer weekend.
05:41Mary?
05:41Yeah, those lifeguards bracing for a busy weekend.
05:43Anthony, thank you.
05:45So let's get right to meteorologist Danny Beckstrom from our New York station, WABC.
05:49And Danny, you're tracking a new tropical storm in the Atlantic.
05:52Yeah, Mary, the Atlantic hurricane season peaks in just under three weeks,
05:57and we now have our sixth named storm in the basin,
05:59with Tropical Storm Ferdinand just named by the National Hurricane Center.
06:03It's currently about 400 miles from Bermuda, expected to stay east of the island.
06:07It's much smaller, much weaker than Aaron, and poses no threat to the U.S.
06:10While here in the U.S., rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms bring a flash flood threat to the southeast,
06:15with flood watches in effect from Jacksonville, Florida, up to Hatteras, North Carolina, through late tonight.
06:19The extreme heat is the weather story in the west, with alerts from Arizona to Washington,
06:24and record highs expected again Sunday for cities like Seattle and Portland.
06:27The hot, dry conditions continue to fuel fire danger in the region,
06:30especially with the threat for lightning as isolated thunderstorms develop again on Sunday from southern Oregon to Arizona.
06:35Mary?
06:36And we know you'll be tracking it all.
06:37Danny, thank you.
06:39Next tonight, a community under evacuation orders after an explosion at a plant in Louisiana.
06:44Drone video capturing the aftermath as the fire still burns,
06:47pumping plumes of smoke and black soot into the air.
06:51Tonight, the warning to residents.
06:53Here's ABC's Olivia Rubin with the new details coming in.
06:57Tonight, more than 24 hours after a massive explosion and fire at a Louisiana factory,
07:02officials are warning residents to stay indoors.
07:07Officials say a series of explosions rocked Smitty's Supply Shop in Rosalind on Friday afternoon.
07:13Residents concerned.
07:15People walking out, leaving medications, clothes, personal items.
07:21Everyone within a mile radius ordered to leave, including an elementary school.
07:25This order is based primarily on the risk of falling debris,
07:29as well as a precautionary measure due to the ongoing and active nature of the scene.
07:34Critically, officials also urging residents to wash their hands and faces
07:37after exposure to the black soot now filling the air.
07:41The soot generated by the fire is associated with combustibles like plastic or burning trucks,
07:47as well as some hydrocarbon chemicals.
07:49Officials say the EPA has now sent out special aircraft to conduct additional testing on that black soot.
07:55That data under review tonight as investigators continue to search for the cause.
08:01Mary.
08:01Olivia, thank you.
08:03Tonight, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the man mistakenly sent to a notorious prison in El Salvador back in March,
08:08is now facing deportation to Uganda unless he agrees to a plea deal.
08:13That's according to court documents filed by his attorneys.
08:16It comes just one day after he was released from custody in Tennessee,
08:19finally reunited with his family in Maryland.
08:22More now from ABC's Washington Managing Editor, Catherine Falders.
08:25Tonight, the lawyers for Kilmar Abrego Garcia say the Trump administration is trying to force him
08:32to accept a plea deal by threatening to deport him to Uganda.
08:35His attorneys allege the government is trying to coerce him after Abrego Garcia refused an offer
08:41to be deported to Costa Rica in exchange for remaining in jail and pleading guilty to human smuggling charges.
08:47It comes just one day after Abrego Garcia, who was wrongfully deported in March,
08:52was released from federal custody in Tennessee and reunited with his family in Maryland.
08:59He is facing human smuggling charges stemming from a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee.
09:05Abrego Garcia is seen driving an SUV with nine other people inside.
09:09The government has accused him of being part of a human smuggling operation
09:12that transports drugs, weapons, and thousands of undocumented migrants,
09:17allegedly including MS-13 gang members and children across the country.
09:21How many rolls have you got in here? Four?
09:24He's hauling these people for money. You got an a** hauler is what he's doing.
09:28Abrego Garcia denies all allegations.
09:31His case became a flashpoint in Trump's aggressive immigration policies
09:34after Abrego Garcia was mistakenly deported to a notorious prison in El Salvador.
09:40At the time, the president and the White House adamant he was a gang member.
09:44He's an illegal alien MS-13 gang member in foreign terrorists.
09:47This comes out of the State Department and very legitimate sources.
09:52Facing a court order, the Trump administration brought him back to the U.S. in June,
09:56only to detain him on those human smuggling charges.
09:59And Catherine joins us now.
10:01So talk us through what comes next year.
10:03Abrego Garcia's attorneys say the government is now giving him until Monday morning to decide,
10:08plead guilty, serve a sentence in the U.S.,
10:10and then be deported to Costa Rica or be sent straight to Uganda.
10:14Catherine, in that case, what happens with the criminal trial against him?
10:17So, Mary, the Department of Justice says they still plan to put Abrego Garcia on trial,
10:22where he will be able to defend himself.
10:24But his attorneys say they have been given an ultimatum.
10:27By Monday morning, Abrego Garcia must decide whether to plead guilty to those charges
10:32and be deported to Costa Rica or face possible deportation to Uganda.
10:36Mary?
10:36And again, that decision expected by Monday.
10:38Catherine Falders, who's been following every twist and turn of this case.
10:41Catherine, thank you.
10:43U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has fired the Pentagon's intelligence agency chief.
10:47Air Force Lieutenant General Jeffrey Cruz is the latest senior military officer to be forced out.
10:53It comes just weeks after the agency contradicted the president's assessment
10:57that U.S. strikes had, quote, obliterated Iran's nuclear facilities.
11:00Two other senior military officials were also fired on Friday.
11:05Overseas now to Gaza.
11:07Israeli forces pressing forward with its military operation in Gaza City,
11:11just 24 hours after the world's leading authority on hunger
11:14declared that famine is now gripping that city.
11:17Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu angrily dismissing it as a lie.
11:22And we want to warn you, some of these images are disturbing.
11:25Here's ABC's Lama Hassan.
11:26Israel's new massive military offensive on Gaza City today intensifying.
11:35The Israeli defense force is launching several deadly airstrikes.
11:40The Hamas-run health ministry saying at least 61 people were killed in separate attacks over the last 24 hours alone,
11:48including these two children.
11:50Their mother tries to let go.
11:52There is no threat here to the Israeli military, this man says.
11:57Everyone here is a civilian.
11:58You can see there are women and children.
12:01308 others injured, some still trapped under the rubble.
12:04Rescue crews are unable to reach them.
12:07On the ground, the Israeli government is planning to occupy the Gaza Strip,
12:12crucial, they say, to defeat Hamas.
12:14With orders for more than one million people to evacuate Gaza City and head south,
12:20some already relocating dozens of times to find shelter,
12:24others telling aid agencies they are simply too weak to walk.
12:29The punishing restrictions on food is taking its toll.
12:32People desperate travel for hours to find food, often dangerous.
12:36All they can find is a sack of flour.
12:39On Friday, for the first time ever, a UN-backed group saying a famine is now gripping Gaza City.
12:46Mary, the Hamas-run health ministry says at least eight people, including two children,
12:51have died because of starvation in the last 24 hours alone.
12:55One aid worker saying that it is the children who are paying the highest price of this conflict.
13:00Mary.
13:01Lama, thank you.
13:02Now to the economy and signs that the Federal Reserve may soon cut interest rates.
13:06And after a week of earnings reports from some of the nation's largest retailers,
13:10some now openly admitting that they may have to pass on the costs of tariffs to consumers.
13:15Here's ABC's Jay O'Brien.
13:19Tonight, high anticipation from Wall Street to Main Street,
13:23after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell signaled as soon as next month,
13:27the U.S. Central Bank could cut interest rates for the first time in nearly a year,
13:32impacting everything from car loans to credit cards.
13:35Powell under a constant pressure campaign from President Trump to lower rates,
13:39which the Fed has left unchanged since December to fight inflation.
13:43We call him too late for a reason.
13:45He should have cut him a year ago.
13:46He's too late.
13:48Trump even calling for Powell to resign and making this rare presidential visit to review the Fed's
13:54renovations and turn up the heat on the chairman about the building's price tag.
13:58It looks like it's about $3.1 billion.
14:01It went up a little bit, or a lot.
14:03So the $2.7 billion is now $3.1 billion.
14:07I'm not aware of that.
14:08Yeah, it just came out.
14:10In his closely watched speech in Jackson Hole, Wyoming,
14:13Powell seeming to acknowledge the president's prodding,
14:16saying only Fed officials reviewing economic data like inflation and jobs numbers will make the final call.
14:22We will never deviate from that approach.
14:26Stocks surging yesterday after Powell's mere suggestion of a rate cut.
14:30Meantime, the Fed watching the impacts of Trump's trade war closely, too,
14:34as major retailers start to feel the pinch.
14:37Walmart's CEO telling investors the world's largest retailer is seeing costs increase each week,
14:43but has largely avoided raising prices so far.
14:46And Home Depot saying it's already begun when it calls some modest price increases.
14:51And it's not just pressure on Chairman Powell, Mary.
14:54President Trump this week threatened to fire Lisa Cook, a Biden appointee to the Fed's board,
15:00which votes on whether to raise or lower interest rates.
15:02After accusations from officials in Trump's own administration that Cook committed mortgage fraud,
15:08Cook says this dates back to paperwork from before she joined the Fed that she will answer any legitimate questions,
15:14but she won't be, quote, bullied to step down.
15:17Mary.
15:17Jay O'Brien at the White House tonight.
15:19Jay, thank you.
15:20Next tonight, a bus carrying a junior high football team to a game crashed near Pittsburgh.
15:25At least 21 of the nearly 30 people on the bus were taken to the hospital.
15:30Police say the bus turned on its side during the crash.
15:32This just one day after a deadly tour bus crash in upstate New York near Buffalo killed at least five people.
15:39And there is much more ahead on World News tonight this Saturday, including why an Air Canada flight to Las Vegas made an emergency landing
15:46and the frightening scene under the Friday night lights when shots were fired near a high school football game.
15:53Next tonight, a chaotic situation at a high school football game in Mayfield, Kentucky.
16:00Players and fans running for safety when gunshots were heard Friday night.
16:05Wait, wait, wait.
16:06They said we got shots fired.
16:09People are running like crazy because they say shots are fired.
16:12A frightening scene.
16:13Police say the shooting happened in a parking lot.
16:16An adult was hurt and airlifted to a hospital.
16:18No arrests were reported and the rest of the game was called off.
16:23An Air Canada jet bound for Las Vegas made an emergency landing in Chicago last night.
16:27The crew reporting a passenger disturbance on board.
16:30The airline did not provide any other information other than to say the incident was resolved and that no arrest was made.
16:37The flight did eventually take off for Vegas just about three hours late.
16:41And when we come back, the sad news for fans of Emily in Paris.
16:45The emergency that shut down filming.
16:48To the index now and tragedy on the Netflix series set of Emily in Paris.
16:54An assistant director, Diego Borella, collapsed and later died while filming in Venice on Thursday.
17:00Borella was 47 years old.
17:02The cause of death is pending.
17:03Filming for the show's fifth season was suspended for two days.
17:07And one of the world's most active volcanoes is erupting again.
17:11Hawaii's Kilauea volcano sent an arc of lava 100 feet into the air on Friday.
17:15This is the 31st eruption there since December.
17:19One National Park Service volunteer says the heat can be felt a mile away.
17:23The eruption, though, is contained within the summit crater and no homes are threatened.
17:28And still ahead, what's sweeter than a cup of lemonade at the U.S. Open?
