02:14From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight with David Muir.
02:22Good evening.
02:22It is great to start another week with all of you at home.
02:24We begin tonight with the air quality alerts for millions of Americans at this hour.
02:28Smoke from raging wildfires in Canada now spreading down right over the U.S.
02:32across the Midwest and the Northeast.
02:34In Boston, a ground stop at Logan Airport for a time.
02:37In New York City tonight, an air quality alert now issued.
02:39Also, the warnings about the air in Detroit.
02:42And it's not just Canada.
02:4339 major wildfires are now burning in 13 states in the West.
02:47Tonight, there are real concerns over the air quality in all those highlighted areas
02:51with the highest risk in the areas in red, from Las Vegas to Green Bay, Detroit to Buffalo,
02:56all in the red zone due to wildfire smoke.
02:59But this stretches all the way to New York City and Boston.
03:01More than 700 wildfires are burning in Canada.
03:04This one in British Columbia closing down a major highway, forcing hundreds to evacuate.
03:09The skyline of Boston barely visible because of that haze.
03:12A ground stop at Logan Airport for a time.
03:14And in the West tonight, the Gifford Fire burning more than 100 square miles north of Los Angeles,
03:19prompting evacuations, causing several injuries.
03:22Chief Meteorologist Ginger Zee has the forecast, and she leads us off tonight.
03:25Tonight, air quality alerts for millions from the Great Lakes to the Northeast as wildfires
03:31in the U.S. and Canada rage.
03:34New England skies covered in thick, hazy smoke.
03:38WCVB's chief meteorologist Cindy Fitzgibbon.
03:40This is what it looks like in Worcester.
03:42This is what it looks like in Boston.
03:44At Boston's Logan Airport, the FAA issuing a brief ground stop, blaming the smoke.
03:49Dozens of flights delayed.
03:51There are air quality alerts up from New York City and back through the Great Lakes.
03:56Meteorologist Mike Taylor from our Detroit affiliate WXYZ.
04:00This puts you in the unhealthy criteria.
04:02Simply put, that means that it's just bad air for everybody.
04:06The air quality rating in the Detroit area among the worst in the world today.
04:10The culprit?
04:12Smoke from more than 700 wildfires in Canada.
04:15Meanwhile, in California, hot, dry conditions fueling multiple major wildfires.
04:20The Gifford Fire north of Santa Barbara, which nearly tripled in size Saturday, now burning
04:25more than 100 square miles and still out of control.
04:29At least three people injured, one suffering serious burns.
04:33Extraordinary pictures from across the U.S. and Canada tonight.
04:35Let's get right to Ginger.
04:36And Ginger, as you said, from the Midwest to the Great Lakes to the Finger Lakes, all the
04:40way to New York City and Boston.
04:41The impact from this is vast.
04:42It is, and that's because Canada, David, has had more than 16 million acres burned.
04:49That's more than twice their average acreage to date.
04:52Now, behind me, the smoky skies are evident, and we have air quality in the unhealthy for
04:57sensitive groups category.
04:59Locating all the way down to Delaware, up to Maine, the air quality alerts back to Green
05:03Bay, Grand Rapids, Michigan, even northwest Indiana.
05:06How long does this stick around?
05:07Well, for the midweek is where we have to kind of hold out for Wednesday.
05:11By then, things are looking better.
05:12But we're going to see this push around some of that near-surface smoke, which is tough for
05:16people with asthma, certainly for the young or elderly.
05:19And we've got another area we're watching today.
05:21Flash flood alerts from Atlanta back down to Apalachicola, Florida.
05:26Two-inch-per-hour rainfall rates through tomorrow are possible.
05:29And it is that time of year, climatologically, it's when we heat up in the Atlantic.
05:32And we sure have three areas that we're watching right now.
05:35No impacts to land, just some rip current threats for South and North Carolina, David.
05:38But we know you'll continue to track it for us.
05:40Ginger, we'll see you first thing in the morning on GMA.
05:42In the meantime, to the harrowing commute on a train bound for New York City, a fire breaking
05:46out under a path train during rush hour.
05:48Passengers pounding on the doors from the inside, trying to get out of the train.
05:52Passengers on that train, as it was filling up with smoke, you can see the pictures here,
05:55pleading with the conductor to open the doors.
05:58Several people were rushed to the hospital.
05:59And here's Stephanie Ramos tonight.
06:02Move!
06:02Move!
06:03Move!
06:03Move!
06:03Move!
06:05Panic and chaos as smoke filled this commuter path train headed for Manhattan at the start
06:10of the morning rush.
06:11Easy, easy, easy, man.
06:13Open the door!
06:15A fire on board sending flames shooting out from under the train as commuters inside begged
06:20the conductor to open the door so they could escape.
06:23First responders swarming the station in Jersey City, New Jersey, where they treated 13 people
06:28for smoke inhalation, nine of them taken to the hospital.
06:31The fire stranding commuters.
06:33There are no trains out of Hoboken right now, so we are trying to make it to a ferry.
06:41Service suspended for nearly five hours on path trains, which run nearly 200,000 trips in and
06:48out of New York City every day.
06:50David, at this point, there are no reports of any major injuries.
06:54The NTSB is investigating the cause of that fire.
06:57David.
06:58Stephanie Ramos with us here.
06:59Steph, thanks as always.
07:00Tonight, a pilot on a United flight out of Washington, D.C., issuing a mayday, an engine
07:04failing just after takeoff, and the emergency landing that followed.
07:08And the other scare tonight, a passenger jet and the bird strike.
07:10Passengers putting on oxygen masks, bracing for impact.
07:14After they landed, you could see the damage to the plane.
07:17Gio Benitez covers aviation.
07:20Tonight, we're learning about a mid-air emergency on board a United passenger jet from Washington,
07:25D.C. to Germany, with 230 people on board.
07:28Shortly after takeoff from Dulles, the pilot reporting an engine failure, repeatedly declaring
07:33mayday.
07:34The plane, flying at nearly 5,000 feet at the time, forced to head back to Dulles on
07:46July 25th.
07:47In a statement, United pointing to a mechanical issue, saying the plane landed safely.
07:52It comes as this Iberia jet lost nearly half of its nose, colliding with a large bird after
07:58takeoff in Madrid overnight.
08:00This video on X, showing the jet being towed away, its engine damaged.
08:06Passengers Giancarlo Sandoval filming the terrifying scene.
08:09People wearing oxygen masks as the cabin fills with smoke.
08:13Passengers applauding as that plane landed back in Madrid.
08:18Iberia saying tonight they continued to Paris on a new flight.
08:23And David, back at Dulles, United says that flight to Germany was canceled and travelers got
08:27on other flights the FAA is investigating.
08:30David.
08:31Gio, thank you.
08:32One more aviation note tonight.
08:33Witnesses watching as a small plane crashed right off the east coast and into the Atlantic.
08:37It happened off the coast of North Carolina.
08:40Witnesses horrified.
08:41And then the dramatic rescue that followed.
08:43Here's Mola Lenghi tonight.
08:45Tonight, the exact moment a plane crashes.
08:48Oh, my God.
08:49Off the North Carolina coast.
08:51Caught on video.
08:52Striking the water and flipping over.
08:54The single-engine plane going down near Oak Island Saturday evening.
08:58Water rescue teams already in the area after responding to another call nearby seen rushing
09:03to the crash site, approaching the submerged plane by boat, jet ski, and even surfboard.
09:08The pilot speaking to ABC affiliate WWAY.
09:12At a certain point, the engine just completely stopped.
09:15The propeller stopped.
09:16And at that point, I knew that I was going to have to land in the water.
09:20Officials say he was safely removed from the wreckage and treated on shore for non-life-threatening injuries.
09:26The plane later towed from the water.
09:29Well, officials say the pilot was the only person on board.
09:32Tonight, the FAA is investigating the incident, David.
09:35Mola Lenghi with a small of thanks.
09:36Now to the showdown in Texas at this hour.
09:38Governor Greg Abbott now threatening to arrest Democratic lawmakers who fled the state to delay a high-stakes redistricting vote.
09:45Republicans trying to redraw that state's congressional map that could give them five more seats in the House in Washington.
09:52And tonight, word coming in from New York and California's governors.
09:55Will they follow suit?
09:56Here's John Carl.
09:58Tonight, the governor of Texas is threatening to arrest any Democratic lawmaker who has left the state,
10:04as dozens have, to avoid voting on new congressional maps designed to favor Republicans.
10:10I ordered the Texas Department of Safety to locate, arrest, and return to the House chamber
10:15any member who has abandoned their duty to Texans.
10:19Governor Abbott declared in a statement,
10:21this order will remain in effect until all missing Democrat House members are accounted for and brought to the Texas Capitol.
10:28Until at least some of the Texas Democrats return to the state,
10:32there won't be a quorum in the statehouse and a vote on the new congressional districts can't go forward.
10:37Members, a quorum is not present.
10:41Republicans voted to issue civil arrest warrants to bring the Democrats back to the Capitol.
10:45But those warrants have no power outside of the state of Texas.
10:50More than 50 of the Democratic lawmakers have left, some to Illinois, others to New York and Massachusetts.
10:56We just arrived here in Chicago.
11:00We have made it safely to Chicago.
11:02We are breaking quorum.
11:03My Democratic colleagues and I have just left our beloved state to break quorum and stop Trump's redistricting power grab.
11:10Republicans are seeking to redraw the state's congressional districts
11:14in a way that could help Republicans win five extra House seats in next year's midterm elections.
11:20The move was demanded by President Trump,
11:23who is eager to preserve the narrow Republican majority in Congress.
11:26On Texas, on Texas, how many more seats do you want the Republicans to draw?
11:32Five.
11:32Are you calling in for a complete redrawing of the congressional map?
11:36No, no, just a very simple redrawing.
11:38We pick up five seats.
11:39Although Democrats have also skewed congressional district maps to favor their party in states they control,
11:46redistricting usually only happens after a new once-a-decade census.
11:50Now, the Democratic governors of California and New York are threatening to change their congressional districts to retaliate against Texas.
11:58And we're going to fight fire with fire.
12:00Then they're leaving us no choice.
12:02We must do the same.
12:05Texas Democrats will have to come home eventually.
12:07In the meantime, this could become quite costly.
12:10Each one of them faces a $500 fine for every day that they are out of the state.
12:16Meanwhile, this just in from the governor of Texas, he has ordered the Texas Rangers to initiate an investigation
12:23into whether any of those Democrats either accepted or solicited funds to pay for their travels outside of the state,
12:30something he says would be a violation of Texas bribery laws.
12:34David?
12:34John Carr with the breaking headline.
12:36And, John, as you point out, this is usually tied to the census,
12:38which is why so many people are watching this across the country.
12:41Thanks, John.
12:42To the urgent manhunt tonight for the man who police say killed a family of four and then allegedly kidnapped
12:46and then abandoned the baby in Tennessee.
12:49Here's Trevor Ault.
12:51Tonight, the intensifying search for the suspect accused in the gruesome killing of a Tennessee family of four
12:57allegedly kidnapping and then abandoning their infant last week.
13:01Authorities believe Austin Drummond knew the family and is still in the area,
13:06charging four other people in connection with the crime three of them believed to have helped him get away.
13:11A $17,000 reward now being offered for tips that lead to an arrest.
13:17And in Montana, in a separate case, hundreds of officers searching for Michael Brown,
13:22who authorities say shot and killed four people Friday at his neighborhood bar.
13:26By all indications, this is an unstable individual who walked in and murdered four people in cold blood for no reason whatsoever.
13:33Authorities say Brown was a regular at the Owl Bar and likely knew all four victims.
13:38Officials releasing this image, saying he'd shed most of his clothes and fled the scene.
13:43We have a visual of someone on Ash Street.
13:46He allegedly stole a vehicle with camping gear and may now be hiding in the mountains.
13:50We are acting under the assumption that he is alive, well armed and extremely dangerous.
13:55And David, authorities say the alleged Montana gunman is an army veteran with a known history of mental health and drug problems.
14:04David, Trevor Rall reporting. Trevor, thank you.
14:06Overseas tonight, the haunting images of the hostages still being held by Hamas, appearing desperate and frail.
14:11The family of one hostage tonight describing him as a living skeleton.
14:16Tonight, what Israel is now threatening to do to get the hostages out.
14:19Here's Ian Pannell.
14:21Tonight, the haunting images shocking Israel, prompting international outcry.
14:27Emaciated hostages in Gaza on the brink of starvation.
14:30The propaganda videos coming after weeks of terrible images of children in Gaza dying of malnutrition.
14:38Now, sources telling ABC News, Prime Minister Netanyahu threatening to expand the military operation to occupy all of Gaza and get the hostages home.
14:4624-year-old Evyatar David, seen in that disturbing video.
14:50His family saying he's become a living skeleton buried alive in a Hamas tunnel.
14:56We spoke with his brother, Ilya.
14:58What impact has the release of the video had on the family?
15:02It really crushed us.
15:03We were in a roller coaster.
15:07Emotional storm because it was a sign of life.
15:13And hostage Ron Praslavsky, seen here saying, I'm at death's door, in a chilling video released by Islamic Jihad.
15:21Both families agreeing for the media to show these horrific images.
15:24Ilya David, critical of Hamas, for using the hostages and its own people as bargaining chips.
15:30They used my brother, they used the other hostages, they used the people of Gaza as pawns in their sick game.
15:38So first, this starvation must stop, but it will only happen if Hamas will allow it to stop.
15:47David, it's unclear if Netanyahu's threat to occupy all of Gaza is actually a negotiating ploy to force Hamas to disarm and release all the hostages as Israel and the U.S. wants.
15:59David, Ian Piano, live in Tel Aviv for us.
16:02Ian, thank you.
16:03Back here in the U.S. and in New York City tonight, Sean Diddy Combs has been denied bail.
16:07He will remain in jail until his sentencing October 3rd.
16:10Combs was convicted on two counts of transporting individuals for prostitution and not guilty of more serious charges.
16:16His lawyers had argued others convicted of similar crimes had been granted bail.
16:20The judge denying the request.
16:21When we come back on this Monday night, this evening, there is news of a shark attack involving the pregnant wife of a former NBA player bitten by a shark.
16:29We'll have more in a moment.
16:30The other terrifying moments in the water, a whale slamming into a boat off the northeast, a woman thrown into the water right there.
16:37And then the tributes pouring in tonight for Lonnie Anderson, the actress from WKRP in Cincinnati.
16:42Tonight, I Dream of Jeannie star Barbara Eden and what she's saying about Lonnie Anderson in a moment.
16:46Tonight, we're learning the pregnant wife of former New York Knicks star Danilo Gallinari was attacked by a shark while on vacation in Puerto Rico.
16:55His wife, sports journalist Eleonora Boye, was bitten on the leg near San Juan, waiting in the water along a crowded beach there.
17:01Tonight, she says she and the baby are fine.
17:04A scare for boaters off the Jersey Shore.
17:06A video showing the woman being thrown overboard, a mink whale repeatedly slamming into the boat with several people on board.
17:13The boater was not hurt.
17:14The whale did not survive this.
17:16When we come back here tonight, remembering Lonnie Anderson from WKRP in Cincinnati.
17:21Tonight, I Dream of Jeannie star Barbara Eden paying tribute.
17:26To the next tonight, the tributes for actress Lonnie Anderson, who died after a long illness.
17:31Best known, of course, for her role in WKRP in Cincinnati.
17:33Married to Burr Reynolds for five years.
17:35Tonight, I Dream of Jeannie star Barbara Eden paying tribute to her, quote, dear friend.
17:39Calling her a real talent with razor smart wit and a glowing sense of humor.
17:44A darling lady and a genuinely good person.
17:46Lonnie Anderson was 79.
17:48When we come back here tonight, every parent, every grandparent waits for this moment.
17:53But they don't expect it to happen in front of thousands.
17:55You'll see it in a moment.
17:58Finally tonight here, America Strong, one step at a time.
18:03Tonight here, the incredible moves on the WNBA basketball court.
18:06But this time, we're not talking about the players.
18:08The big game in Las Vegas, the Aces against the Lynx, the sold-out crowd, and during halftime, some of the youngest fans right there on the court.
18:17Invited by the Aces for the third annual diaper derby, they call it.
18:20All the dads with their babies lined up.
18:23Moms on the other side, holding their babies' favorite toys to try to coax them to crawl across the court to get to them.
18:29Then they were off.
18:31And watch the third baby from the right, in the white shirt, pink headband with the bow, little Ada, who just turned one, off to an early lead.
18:39Dad Paul in the red Las Vegas Aces hat and jersey, right behind her, pointing toward Mom.
18:45Halfway across the court, with a sizable lead, Ada stopping to grab her stuffed animal, hugging it.
18:50Watch this.
18:51Slowly, she carefully stands up.
18:57The crowd goes wild, and Ada wasn't done.
19:02Remarkably, she starts walking.
19:04Her first steps, right there in front of Mom and Dad, and in front of a crowd of more than 10,000.
19:09Making her way to crowd Mom, Louisa, with a big hug.
19:17Ada winning the call by walking.
19:20After the race, Dad carrying Ada and her trophy.
19:23She'd been standing, but she hadn't been walking.
19:26She just ran, like, just standing up in the middle of the day.
19:29Tonight, Dad Paul overjoyed, telling us she did one step at home.
19:34She's been practicing, but then she just kept going, and that was wild for us.
19:37We were not expecting her to take off like that.
19:41Tonight, Ada and her incredible first steps, right in front of the sold-out crowd, cheering her on.
19:47How can you beat that?
19:48Hopefully, Ada walked right over to the TV tonight to check herself out.
19:51I'll see you right back here tomorrow night.
19:53Good night.
