00:00We saw him last year during the regular season, but still great memories whenever Sean Payton
00:08returns to the Caesars Superdome, 15 years the head coach of the Saints, and an unforgettable
00:15Super Bowl championship season in 2009.
00:19So starting now in his third year as the head coach of the Broncos, your former head coach.
00:24So you've got plenty of stories on Sean Payton.
00:27Lots of great shared memories with most of Houdet Nation, especially with that Super Bowl year.
00:33It's almost strange seeing him on the visitor's sideline.
00:39Kellen Moore, youngest head coach in the NFL at 36 years of age and a Super Bowl champion last year
00:46as the offensive coordinator, of course, of the Philadelphia Eagles.
00:49But it's good to see what has developed for the Saints because if anything, they went outside.
00:55But let Kellen Moore put his own staff together.
00:59Blade over to the near side.
01:03Jackson over to the far side, waiting for the Blake groupie kick.
01:07And we're just about set for the final preseason game.
01:11Cowan takes a 1 hopper.
01:18And stumbling his way across the 15 is Courtney Jackson.
01:24So the starting quarterback, and what a story Bo Nix was last year.
01:28Out of Oregon.
01:29Good. So Sean Payton invested a great deal in this young man.
01:32And his athletic system also helps when you're only sacked 24 times,
01:36get pregnant to the offensive line, but the mobility,
01:39you're 17 games, 24 sacks, that's pretty strong.
01:42It was a great union between a smart processor of a quarterback
01:46similar to what New Orleans has known for many, many years
01:50and under that Sean Payton realm and reign, similar to Drew Brees,
01:55but certainly I would say Bo Nix has a little bit of an athletic advantage.
01:58Get out on the edge. Reception is incomplete.
02:01So it was trapped. Good coverage.
02:04It was intended for Courtney Sutlin.
02:07Sutton, eighth year out of SMU,
02:09had a career-best 81 catches for him last year.
02:13And Amadi, one-on-one coverage with a little shallow cross,
02:17able to break up the basket, his hand in on the football.
02:21It'll be second and ten. Put it back at the 20.
02:28R.J. Harvey in the backfield, in the eye.
02:35Looking for a crease between the center and guard.
02:38It's a stack of the 23.
02:40Short game and brings up an early third down.
02:43So now some of the starters like Godshaw.
02:46Nevin John Godshaw out of LSU getting opportunities to get some snaps and game speed.
02:53That's it.
02:54Right in the middle of your screen lined up.
02:56Godshaw is a difference maker.
02:57You see the space eater.
02:59That was a point of emphasis this entire offseason for the Saints defense
03:03is how do they improve their run game.
03:05It starts in the middle.
03:07And Godshaw is that addition to the defensive front
03:09that they feel like is really going to stabilize the center of that 3-4.
03:13They were 31st against the run on the 32 teams last year,
03:17giving up 141 yards.
03:19It's going to be Bade in the backfield with Knicks and a timeout is called.
03:24The lay-a-game.
03:28Offense number 10.
03:29Five-yard penalty.
03:31Third down.
03:31I saw on the far sideline one of the coaches was trying to get a timeout
03:34and didn't get it in time.
03:36So a five-yard markoff at a third and long.
03:40Broncos, one of the better stories last year, of course,
03:42in the NFL going to the playoffs
03:44and going to the playoffs for the first time in a long time.
03:49It had been eight seasons.
03:52Lost in the first round of the Buffalo.
03:53The Buffalo Bills, but still just to get there.
03:58Knicks now with plenty of time.
04:00It collapses.
04:01Underneath it goes wide to the intended target
04:03and a wide-open target form in Portland, Sutton.
04:09We saw Knicks work through his progression.
04:11Brzee able to get home late on some line movement.
04:15Interesting lineup for this Saints defensive front.
04:18You had Cam Jordan, Brzee to one side,
04:21Carl Granderson, Chase Young, to the other.
04:24Brzee is able to finally get pressure on Knicks.
04:27Coverage held up on the back end,
04:29tried for an underneath throw and forced a fourth down.
04:31Jeremy Croshaw out of Florida.
04:34The only punter taken in the draft this year.
04:37Sixth rounder.
04:38Pettis at the 40 on a rattler.
04:40Good field position for the Saints.
04:42And as he's out of bounds, close to the midfield stripe.
04:45So Spencer Rattler getting the start.
04:49Man, what a finish for him last week.
04:52To produce a tie for the Saints.
04:58He hooked up well a couple of times with Tipton,
05:01a couple of times with Pettis,
05:02and the two-point conversion to tie it up at 17 apiece.
05:07And the Saints needed one more second, didn't they?
05:09Just one more second last week.
05:10Half a second.
05:12Camara seen his first snap of the preseason.
05:18Good throw.
05:19And it's complete.
05:20Chris Alave.
05:22So multiple options on the rollout
05:24to the far side of the field for Rattler.
05:27Same concept that Denver started with.
05:30Bo Nix rolled out.
05:31Now you have Spencer Rattler, a little play action.
05:34Rollout works to his second progression.
05:36Able to hook up with Alave for the first down.
05:39And nice decoy to have Camara in the backfield, too.
05:42You have to account for him.
05:44Kendra Miller takes over.
05:48Looking for a crease and a good crease for Kendra Miller.
05:51And a good run on first down.
05:53Gets about eight, up to the, down to the 31.
05:58Man, second and short.
05:59We always talk about on schedule, off schedule.
06:02That's the ultimate.
06:02If you can get five or more on a first down run play.
06:05Well, it helps when you have Eric McCoy back in the middle.
06:08Interesting little fold block.
06:10Cesar Ruiz blocks down.
06:13Eric McCoy is able to wrap around, get up on the backer,
06:15and create a huge gash for Kendra to work with.
06:20First three wide receivers into the game.
06:22A little delay action.
06:23And, on tackle.
06:25Didn't work, but it's going to be coming back on a flag.
06:28It looks like a holding call against the Saints.
06:35Would have been a first down.
06:37Holding.
06:38Offense number 83.
06:40Ten-yard penalty.
06:41Second down.
06:43Juwan Johnson, the tight end, is called for the hold.
06:45You know, I mentioned Eric McCoy.
06:54First time seeing him this preseason.
06:56But, what a resource for these young quarterbacks.
06:59Whether it's Spencer Rattler or Tyler Shuck.
07:02His ability to not only get everyone on the same page,
07:04but also perform at a high level,
07:06really stabilizes this offensive line.
07:08And a Pro Bowl were two years ago for the Saints.
07:11Here comes the blitz.
07:11And off the fingertips of Kendra Miller
07:14as he is ready to get drilled by Sertan.
07:19Pat Sertan II.
07:21His dad a product and a quarterback at Edna Carr High School.
07:25In fact, his dad led Edna Carr to the first state championship
07:28back in 1993.
07:32Now, what a year he had.
07:35He's now in his fifth season out of Alabama.
07:37Defensive player of the year in 2024.
07:45Going to be third long.
07:51Well, the pocket holed up enough time,
07:54and it's punched away from Brandon Cooks.
07:56Guess who?
07:58Pretty good cover guy, isn't he?
07:59Sertan.
08:01Sertan was right on it.
08:02The sticks route.
08:03Trying to get the first down.
08:04Obviously, the penalty was a crusher.
08:06He's matched up.
08:08Man-to-man coverage.
08:09Brandon Cooks sits.
08:11Gets a little handsy.
08:12There's a couple coaches upset on the sidelines.
08:15Saints sidelines wanted to see a flag come out.
08:19Did not get it.
08:20Blake Ruby had a lung of 57 yards last year.
08:24It's going to be a 56-yard attempt.
08:26Kyle Kroger, the putter on the hole.
08:33And on its way, he's got plenty.
08:39That's better than 60 yards.
08:40He got 56, but you can see it go through the upright.
08:43So good to know he needs 60-plus.
08:46It's good by Rupi.
08:47And first drive stalls because of the penalty,
08:50but the Saints still get points.
08:51A replays this afternoon all sponsored by Rousey's official supermarket
09:01of the New Orleans Saints.
09:04And welcome back to Big Easy.
09:06Along with John Stinchcomb.
09:07Aaron Summers, Joel Lyres.
09:09A good start for the Saints.
09:11Penalty.
09:11Denied them another first down.
09:13It would have been close to red zone territory.
09:15They settled with a 56-yard field goal by Groupie,
09:18who gets ready to kick it away once again.
09:21Jackson to the near side.
09:23Bade over to the far side for the Denver Broncos.
09:28And the low-line drive.
09:30Backpedaling is going to be Bade.
09:31He'll bring it out from the goal line.
09:34And looking for Lane at a good line at that.
09:36It's a big alarm time for him.
09:38And a really good return.
09:41So Lane over to the right side.
09:44Man, once again, close to the midfield's drive.
09:46This time it's for the Denver Broncos.
09:48A 48-yard return.
09:51And looking ahead now, it opens with the Cardinals.
09:54So a couple of games at home, and that doesn't hurt for a new staff, does it?
09:59No, that's where you want it.
10:01But you look at that first quarter, and following that,
10:03you go all the way to the West Coast in Seattle with the Seahawks,
10:07followed by back to Buffalo, New York, for the Bills.
10:10Yeah, but if you're going to face the Bills, better in September than December.
10:15Knicks dumps it off in the flat.
10:17Short game for Troy Franklin.
10:19Now in his second season.
10:21Out of Oregon, their fourth-round draft choice last year.
10:24Guess who?
10:25Demario Davis over on the sideline to make the play.
10:27It's a short game to about three to the midfield strike.
10:33So the second possession of the game for Denver.
10:36Boy, so many of your counterparts that you worked with are on the sideline with the Denver Broncos now,
10:44and Sean Payton at second and seven.
10:47He wanted the dunk ball.
10:52That was taken away, and the tight end makes the grab,
10:55and that's a former Saint who got, he got popped.
10:59And that's Adam Troutman.
11:01He got popped by Carl Granderson, who's actually in coverage.
11:06Watch what, he, Carl's the, drops into coverage,
11:10sees the flow of the play, Amadi's pressuring.
11:13That's one of those catches that you feel for the next couple of days,
11:18because Granderson puts his shoulder into him, flexes on him a little bit.
11:22And that's something we talked about in the 3-4, Granderson dropping in coverage.
11:26Yeah, so with the variety pack of pressures that you can bring from the 3-4,
11:31it also demands these outside players to not just rush the passer every down.
11:36Hover to the left side, won't get there.
11:39Needed about six on third down.
11:41And a good play by Amadi.
11:43Amadi's had a great camp, wants to make an impact once season rolls around
11:48because he's showing up time and time again.
11:51Certainly has this series, pressuring Nix on the play before,
11:55and then setting an edge, forcing the cut back, makes the tackle,
11:59forcing a fourth down on that third down.
12:02And it looks like they might go for it.
12:04Needed about six.
12:06Amadi in the backfield.
12:07Nix will go for it.
12:14A long count out of the gun.
12:16Out of the back shoulder.
12:17Throws complete.
12:18And a first down for Sutton.
12:20An alert play.
12:22Turning around just in time.
12:23And Cortland Sutton out of SMU, working against Kool-Aid McKinstry.
12:29Yeah, press man coverage right here, understanding the situation.
12:34Nix throws the back shoulder.
12:36Kool-Aid was asking for a little push-off right there.
12:39Doesn't get it.
12:39Extends the series.
12:44So, conversion on fourth down.
12:47Marvy's going to get the single set in the backfield with Nix.
12:54From the 34, the Saints.
12:56Pocket.
12:57Hand holds up, and it's dropped.
12:59Kevin Ingram.
13:01Out of Ole Miss, now in his ninth year.
13:03Former first-round pick at the Giants.
13:05He turned around, tried to run before he controlled it.
13:10And Nix puts it on him.
13:12But you can see he was already looking upfield.
13:15Ingram frustrated with himself because the ball was perfectly placed.
13:20He wasn't able to come up with a catch.
13:25Second and long.
13:26Good to see Pete Werner out there because Werner was the closest saint on the coverage.
13:32On the double.
13:34Not much there for the running back.
13:36That's R.J. Harvey out of Central Florida.
13:41He was a second-round pick this year.
13:43And Pete Werner accounted for him very quickly.
13:46Closed on it.
13:47No yak yards.
13:49It's kind of what R.J. Harvey brings to the table for the Broncos.
13:53And athletic playmaker in space.
13:56Pete Werner shut that down before he had a chance to turn up field.
13:59Shots out of the 32.
14:02And he was going to be third in about eight.
14:10Nix out of the gun.
14:11Pressure from the outside.
14:13And he eludes that.
14:14And picks up the first down in the dump-off.
14:16He's bought a former Missouri Tiger down in second season.
14:22And, boy, what a resourceful.
14:23And that's what I said about Nix to start the game.
14:26You only have 24 zacks on the guy.
14:28Shows the mobility and escapability of the quarterback.
14:31What a difference maker that was.
14:33You see the pocket collapse and somehow able to escape.
14:37Find a receiver.
14:38Just remarkable play by Nix just to find a way to get out of that collapsing pocket.
14:46He started back close to the midfield stripe after the good return.
14:50And now first and ten at the 16.
14:55The fade for the corner.
14:58And Sutton.
15:00That was good coverage by McKinstry that time.
15:03McKinstry step for step with Sutton down the sideline.
15:07Similar to that fourth down conversion where they threw the back shoulder.
15:10Now Nix goes for the fade.
15:14McKinstry is able to get his hands up.
15:17Force a really hard throw.
15:20You know, they expect a lot from Kool-Aid this year.
15:24Steps in his sophomore season, if you will.
15:28High expectations.
15:31Second and ten.
15:33And on the toss.
15:34Kick-out block.
15:37Not available on the edge.
15:40So Pete Werner was over there.
15:43And he got to R.J. Harvey.
15:45It starts with Cam Jordan.
15:47I mean.
15:47Turns it in.
15:48He is.
15:49He just doesn't age.
15:51It is so impressive to watch him play.
15:54And a new role on the edge.
15:55Well, and more opportunity in space, I think, is what you're trying to create for him, along with Chase Young and Carl on those edges.
16:05But he's always been so good, not only rushing the passer, but affecting the run game.
16:11It takes a lot of pride in it.
16:12It's a third down.
16:15A little screen.
16:18Won't get there.
16:19Inside the 15th at the 14th.
16:22Good his body on the reception.
16:24Man, Julian Blackman, out of the secondary, wrapping things up.
16:27You talked about Blackman and Reed, the safeties, in the top of the telecast.
16:37Well, you look at the, I mean, the Saints are flying around right now.
16:40Mario Davis cuts off lanes to the inside.
16:44Blackman finishes off in position.
16:47They forced a fourth down conversion.
16:49And now, of course, in a field goal attempt.
16:52Will Lutz, what we're saying, coming out the best year of his career, a pro bowler last year.
16:57And he's got a 32-yard field goal to tie things up.
17:02So the Saints get the job done defensively.
17:05Hold him to three.
17:06And we're all leaving at the Dome.
17:16It's tied at three.
17:18Boy, it's going to be interesting.
17:19And as much as you get pumped up in the preseason, this is your first job as a head coach.
17:24You're 36 years old.
17:25I can only imagine the heart through the ribcage.
17:29That's going to be brought back by Jones.
17:31Vettelis is going to be the last five-star way.
17:34He's going to lay on past the trade line.
17:36The return by Vettelis Jones.
17:40But as I mentioned, Kellen Moore at 36, two weeks from now, man, is it going to be exciting for him.
17:45But what about Darren Rizzi and all the coaches that were Saints coaches now with Sean Payton?
17:51It's amazing how many Super Bowl rings are on the far sideline.
17:54They have a fleur-de-lis on them.
17:57It's familiar faces everywhere.
18:00Big Zach.
18:01We don't like him.
18:02We love him.
18:03Your old teammate, Zach Streif.
18:04So many connections.
18:08From the 38, pick toss.
18:10That's an unprecedented play, especially when you get a kick-out block for Olave.
18:15And he gets about seven on first down on schedule, as offense coordinator would like to say.
18:20Roland, what's remarkable so far in this game is the energy that the Saints have brought to it.
18:26You saw the defense flying around.
18:27And with the exception of the penalty, which became a drive killer from the offense,
18:33they've come out trying to hit on all cylinders as well.
18:37Kendra Miller, the single in the backfield.
18:40As Jawan Johnson shifts over to the slot on the left side.
18:43And on a deep play fake.
18:45That runs that ball.
18:47And they're going to call it a foul ball.
18:48No, now they say, Andrew, it's an indecision that the arm was moving forward.
18:53So he lost his footing.
18:55It was off balance.
18:56There is a flag on the play.
18:57Saints trying to take a shot right there.
19:05Holding.
19:07Defense number 21.
19:09That five-yard penalty will be enforced from the previous spot.
19:13Automatic first down.
19:15That's the starter from last year, Riley Moss, out of the corner.
19:18Third year.
19:20Third year corner from Iowa.
19:23Play action, rollout Rattler.
19:25He's looking for the deep shot, loses his footings, trying to hit his check down.
19:31There's Rashid Shahid.
19:32Let me just tell you, you let him get behind you, and you're going to want to grab because he can fly right past him.
19:37First down for the Saints, right after midfield's drive.
19:40On this direction, Kendra Miller, trying to make the most of it.
19:43Close to four on McCarrie.
19:44Brought down by Malcolm Roach.
19:49The guy who played for the Saints.
19:51He was talking about the staff.
19:52Some of the players.
19:53Malcolm Roach was here for three years as well.
19:55They have a number that they brought with him.
20:00Lutz, you've already mentioned.
20:02Well, it's a comfort zone when you know a guy, and you know his ethic, and what he brings to the table.
20:07Same for the Saints.
20:08They bring in a number of players, Staley's relation with Rumpf and Blackman.
20:13And found the open receiver in the soft spot of the zone.
20:35Started back at the 38.
20:38Now all the way to the 37.
20:43A little more than four minutes to play in the opening, 15 minutes.
20:59And that was Jonathan Cooper, the outside backer.
21:03And he was contained, and he was right there, wasn't he?
21:07Yeah, so in this system, watch him work through his progression.
21:11Pump fakes, doesn't like what he sees.
21:12He's tried to escape.
21:14That's when Cooper's able to wrap him up and bring him down for a sack.
21:19So, as you're evaluating, I think we all are.
21:23Anyone's trying to figure out how does a quarterback get his edge,
21:26and what you do in those situations matters.
21:29Are you going to force the ball, or are you going to make a bad situation worse,
21:33or are you moving on to the next play?
21:35Or are you going to force the ball, or are you going to force the ball, or are you moving on to the next play?
21:39Three wide receivers set, play fake, mirror the field, and it's behind.
21:42R.P.O. concept Spencer sees what what
21:53he likes on the edge she to heat
21:55matched up has an in breaking route
21:57with a outside leverage cornerback
22:00leaves it a little behind but you
22:02can see she wants it back I'm sure
22:07Spencer does as well love to put
22:09it right between the numbers yeah
22:10he had to push it against
22:12recant now third and 14 and they
22:29won't they'll bring groupie and
22:31the placement group on the field
22:37was a good game and the pressure
22:39came in that sequence he stalled
22:44started back thirty eight good
22:45field position and the saints have
22:47had really good field position
22:49it's going to be a forty nine yard
22:50attempt coming up.
22:52He just hit one from fifty six.
22:59Eighty-four percent on his career coming into the new season.
23:04Good placement.
23:07The score by William.
23:106-3 lead, 2-39 left in the first quarter.
23:14And the Saints back on top.
23:22Saints preseason football, all presented by the Gulf Coast Sports and Entertainment Network.
23:26Official broadcast partner of the Pell's.
23:29And the Pell's, the executive vice president with us in just a little bit.

23:36And by Rouse's.
23:37Get community coffee, the Saints official coffee.

23:42The official supermarket of the Saints.
23:46It's a Saturday.
23:47It's not a Sunday, but they're in midseason form of the standard, aren't they?
23:52Now it's going to be spot eight all for the near side.
23:56Jackson on the far side, waiting for the groupie kick.
23:59A low line drive.
24:01Nice.
24:02Jackson away to bounce and inside the fire.
24:05On the left side.
24:05Just parading towards the 20.
24:09A check-in with Aaron Summers.
24:12Louisiana native and former defensive tackle at LSU.
24:16Devon Godshaw joined the team this offseason.
24:18He fits perfectly into this new Brandon Staley defense.
24:21And he's also been the perfect leader for this defensive line all day long.
24:26You can see Brian Brzee following him around at the facility.
24:29And even though they don't play the same positions,
24:31he's teaching these guys what it takes every single day, day in and day out,
24:37to be able to play nine years in the NFL at an extremely high level.
24:41Coach Staley said he's absolutely elevating the culture with his experience.
24:44He sets a great example.
24:46And he loves everything that he has brought to this team so far.
24:51Good game out there.
24:51And so many of the runs out there for the final three season game.
24:55Nick stays in at quarterback.
24:57And a couple pounds outside.
24:59It's RJ Harden.
25:02Brought down.
25:03Amadi.
25:04Out on the edge.
25:05There is a flag down on the playoff for a game of about two.
25:08Holding.
25:09Offense number 82.
25:10Ten-yard penalty.
25:13First down.
25:14Yeah, he took one to the rib cage early.
25:16Now he's taking one from the officials.
25:18That's former St. Adam Troutman.
25:21Talking about gotcha, it's fun to watch a guy like that
25:25because he's not going to show up in his staff books all that much.
25:28You're not going to say, boy, he's going to light him up
25:31and see the impact that he's having on the game statistically.
25:35But the linebackers behind him, I guarantee they appreciate
25:39the style of play that he brings.
25:41Markov takes it back to the 13.
25:45Out of the Jets.
25:46Swede.
25:47Trying to turn the point.
25:48Not even doing it for the wide receiver, Marvin Mims.
25:52Very nice for Mims last year.
25:54In every receiving category.
25:56He's got some Jets.
25:58Pro Bowl.
25:59In 2023 and last season.
26:02You still see Demario Davis flying around the field.
26:06Right.
26:06And timing is everything.
26:08And we always talk about fighters getting ready for a fight, stench.
26:12To get ready for a football season, you need to take some snaps, don't you?
26:15And you're seeing it right now.
26:17The first time we get to see the starters for this defense.
26:21And they're not taking it lightly.
26:22They came out and played with a lot of juice and flying around this football field.
26:26Now Nix and a good pack of protection behind some time.
26:30And out of the pack throws it away.
26:34Granderson chasing him.
26:36There is a flag.
26:37That's right around the original line of scrimmage.
26:44He's saying I had a receiver there.
26:47I think he's wanting a hold call.
26:50Mario Davis matched up with R.J. Harvey.
26:55Personal foul.
26:56Unnecessary roughness.
26:57Defense.
26:58Number 56.
27:00That 15-yard penalty will be enforced from the previous spot.
27:04Automatic.
27:04First down.
27:09Yeah, when Nix extends this play, he's looking at his receivers down the field.
27:17Number 63 is reported as eligible.
27:2063 eligible.
27:21So, you saw the end of that play, right?
27:28Right.
27:28Mario Davis takes a shot.
27:32Bo Nix throws the ball in that general vicinity and gets a personal foul drive extender.
27:39Otherwise shut him down on third down.
27:40They always have hurt.
27:41Early.
27:42Dance Harvey.
27:45Get everything pulled, but the Saints gathered and rowing.
27:48It was gang tackling, taking down to the running back.
27:54Sort of cleaned up out of the secondary.
27:56Yet it was there.
27:58But it was a group effort.
27:59And great first look at this defensive front.
28:04Much was made about, say, 31st in run-stoppability last year.
28:10Almost five a carry.
28:11141 a game.
28:13So, that's an area of concentration, obviously, Skitch.
28:15And having Gottschall in the middle is a difference maker, but he can't do it wrong.
28:20We're also asking Brzee to play a little bit wider.
28:25And the play-backing run out to Nix.
28:28Set level wide open.
28:30And complete.
28:31Mario Yates.
28:32It's second.
28:34A big play inside the 30.
28:37It's a good set on the backfield by Bo Nix for a gain of 43 yards.
28:41Yeah, working the levels.
28:43You see it.
28:43Play action.
28:45Get Nix out in space.
28:46Covered up one.
28:47Covered up two.
28:49Find Sutton over the top.
28:52For a big game.
28:55With your best 81 grabs for Sutton last year.
28:59Now going into this in here.
29:00That's going to be the end of the first 15 minutes of play.
29:05And an entertaining one.
29:07Both teams have stalled.
29:08Three field goals so far.
29:10And an early three-point lead for the Saints.
29:19With John Stinch from Aaron Summers.
29:22Joel Myers is a welcome back to the Big Easy.
29:24Six-three lead.
29:26Saints with a couple of field goals.
29:27A 49-yarder.
29:29And a 56-yarder.
29:31As now the drive continues on a first down.
29:34First down with the second 15.
29:36Bo Nix.
29:38Out of the gun.
29:40And a little slam.
29:41And a completion.
29:42It's the young man who made the big play, Sutton.
29:45Got a good gain on first down to about seven.
29:49Working against McKinstry.
29:52And the work of the secondary.
29:55Against an offense.
29:56It was 10th in the league in scoring last year's stinch.
29:58They averaged 25 points a game.
30:01I think what has typified it so far in the first quarter was just the energy.
30:05They're flying around.
30:06You see them coming up, closing off lanes.
30:09Even when the Broncos have made their catches, it's in tight windows with very little yak afterwards.
30:17The toss can end the line.
30:19And the completion goes to Troy Franklin.
30:21His first concept of touch.
30:24Second-year man out of Oregon.
30:25It was a fourth run by the Broncos last year.
30:28Wrapped up by Yedder.
30:29A little short of the first down, but just barely.
30:33Less than a yard.
30:40Bring in Evan Ingram.
30:43Tied in.
30:46You want to see if it's a gentle look.
30:47Because Troy Franklin stays out there.
30:49The other side.
30:50Well, the Duke took two wide receivers over to the wide side.
30:55Two tight ends bunch on the short side.
31:00And throwing for it.
31:02Throw the field.
31:03And it's complete.
31:06Touchdown.
31:06Yes, it is Cortland Sutton.
31:11No recognition at all from any of the officials, but it is a score.
31:17I know it's a preseason, guys.
31:18The Saints bring pressure off the slot.
31:24Nick's able to buy some time.
31:26It's one-on-one.
31:27Cortland Sutton, Julian Blackman, right there at the goal line.
31:31Blackman sees it.
31:32Tries to make a play.
31:34And Cortland Sutton just uses his big frame to kind of box him out.
31:38He's a big fan of the baseball player in the field.
31:41Yeah, like a good basketball player on the baseline.
31:44He protected it well.
31:45So Sutton on the touchdown reception.
31:50Let's in for the point after.
31:51And the first lead of the day for the Denver Broncos.
31:55Just about 90 seconds into the second quarter.
32:00And that may be it for both next today.
32:03He looks like the confidence after one year and a successful season.
32:07Going to the class with Denver.
32:09Carries over even to the preseason in his second year.
32:12Lutz splits the uprights.
32:14And it's a four-point lead.
32:16So Stinch, you said it well.
32:18Locked out on the baseline.
32:19Got the rebound.
32:20It turned out to be a touchdown.
32:22Sutton and the Broncos on top by four.
32:32Not that long ago, we were at the facility on an airline.
32:35And Mrs. B introduced our new executive vice president for Basketball Ops.
32:40The guy that's in the Basketball Hall of Fame as a player.
32:44He's also led a team to a championship as an executive.
32:48And that's Joe Dumars, who was with the Detroit Pistons for so long as a player and an executive.
32:53And we are very fortunate now to have the Louisiana native with us in New Orleans.
32:58We're joined by Joe in just a moment, after Will Lutz kicks it away.
33:04And he'll be brought back from the throw line.
33:08Across the 25, basically the 27.
33:12And now we are joined by the executive vice president of the New Orleans Pelicans.
33:16And it's good to have a Louisiana native back with us.
33:19An exciting time for you.
33:21Coming home.
33:22Yeah, it is.
33:22It's been great.
33:23I think I've been back to New Orleans about four months now.
33:26And it's been absolutely great.
33:28I've enjoyed every minute of it.
33:29You've been busy.
33:30Yeah, I've been busy.
33:31Been busy.
33:31Been busy.
33:32And you've moved some parts.
33:34And you've brought in some parts.
33:35And we'll talk about Zion.
33:37But some of the new guys that I like that you picked up, like Jordan Poole and Sadiq Bae.
33:41Yeah, those guys have been great.
33:43And Kavon Looney, the two lottery picks.
33:46Those guys are going to be really good for us.
33:48God furs down.
33:52Carry over to the left side.
33:54Akers gets about four.
34:00So they bring in Edwards Hilaire, actually, on the carry.
34:04And we'll see Akers as well as Hilaire, Edwards Hilaire.
34:07But, Joe, tell us about the way you construct a roster.
34:10Because you've already got Zeke.
34:12You've got Trey Murphy.
34:13You've got Herb Jones.
34:14You have some components.
34:15And then Eve is playing real well over in Africa, in Basketball Africa, the tournament.
34:20Yeah, it's really important to have those really talented players that you just mentioned.
34:28But for me, just as important is the depth.
34:31The NBA is 82 games.
34:34Tough, tough 82-game season.
34:36You're going to have injuries.
34:37You're going to have fatigue.
34:39And if your team is not deep, if you don't have the depth of your team, they can catch up with you.
34:43So that's been a big focus of mine since I've been here.
34:46Well, I've got a question for you, then.
34:47Because the Saints have decisions that need to be made in advance of Tuesday.
34:52Yes.
34:52And when you talk about depth, you know, the season is long and it's hard and grueling.
34:58When you're evaluating young players that may not be there yet or a veteran that you kind of know where they're at and they have that ceiling.
35:05How do you make those choices?
35:07Well, you've got to see how they handle situations like this.
35:10I mean, you've done it.
35:12Time out for a virtual measurement.
35:14Good timing.
35:15Good.
35:15We'll be able to talk forever.
35:19No, you know how it is, John.
35:20I mean, like, you've got to see how guys react to live action.
35:23You know, it's one thing to be in practice.
35:25It's one thing to scrimmage.
35:27Situationals that you do in practice.
35:28But nothing is like when they turn those lights on, turn the popcorn on, and people sit in the stands.
35:35That's a different animal.
35:36And you want to see how people react to that as much as you want to see anything.
35:41Yeah, you can only simulate so much, right?
35:43Absolutely.
35:43Do you get out there?
35:44Absolutely.
35:45Bell's Executive Vice President Joe Dumars in the booth with us.
35:48And another, I brought up Bay.
35:51I brought up Poole.
35:51Two guys are going to be starting this year for the Bells.
35:53They are that talented, especially Jordan Poole.
35:56And Bay coming off an ACL missing last season.
35:58But I also want to bring up the fact that mentorship is very important in the NBA.
36:03And you picked up somebody that I really like a lot, Kevon Looney, a real bright young guy to UCLA who's got rings with the Warriors.
36:11Anybody that's played this game, been around this game for a long time, will tell you that what the locker room is like is really important to your team.
36:20And if your locker room is not right, it really doesn't matter how much talent you have.
36:24It's going to catch up with you.
36:25And so guys like Kevon Looney, Sadiq Bey, those type of guys coming in, Jordan Poole, I mean, ultimate pros, grab young guys, put them under their wings.
36:36Denver is challenging the ruling on the field that the runner was down short to the line to gain.
36:43Time out.
36:44All right, we're going to take a quick timeout, but we're going to continue our conversation with Pell's vice president, Joe Dumars, in just a moment.
36:51Johnson was going to be.
36:52We're going to take a quick timeout, and it looks like the Saints might go for it on fourth down, or at least try to draw them offside with a hard count, but stench down early.
37:12Yeah, you see where the knee's down, and that's why Coach Payton on the far sideline, despite it being in preseason games, like, you know what, we're not giving it anything away for three.
37:22Three-measure, short.
37:25Strange seeing that the Broncos have.
37:28Especially in the Dome.
37:29It's one thing that he's in the Mile High City, right back here.
37:32I know it's his third year starting as the head coach for the Broncos, but it's still odd not to see him in black and gold.
37:39We'll get back to Joe Dumars in our conversation in just a moment after this fourth and inches.
37:44Edward DeLong.
37:45He is in the backfield.
37:47Another shoot Tiger.
37:48Slide the tie it in.
37:50Stole.
37:53And Willoughby, just a hard count trying to get him outside before the pump.
37:58Yes.
37:58Timeout Saints.
38:00First charge timeout in New Orleans.
38:02This will be a 30-second timeout.
38:06You talked about depth, and we saw it with the Indiana Pacers.
38:09We saw it with Oklahoma City, the two teams in the NBA Finals.
38:13Now, you've got to go to Australia.
38:15You've got two games in Australia.
38:16Do you bring the guys back and then shut down for a few days because, I mean, that's 17, 18 hours in a play?
38:22Yeah, league rules demand that you give the guys, like, two or three days off when you come back from a trip like that.
38:32So, when we get back from Australia, we will not do anything for the first two or three days.
38:37So, two games in Australia.
38:40Then again in Birmingham, team leader filling it there.
38:43A game in Orlando.
38:45And on the sneak.
38:50Let's see the placement.
38:52That'll be interesting, too.
38:53Again, put it right on the marker.
39:02Time for a virtual measurement.
39:04Right, that's what's coming.
39:05We know that.
39:06Timeout for a virtual measurement.
39:08That's what's going to happen, but, you know, the fans at home can't see this, but, uh, if you're in this, in the dome, you don't know what's happening.
39:23Just kind of looking around, waiting for somebody to tell you.
39:26They don't put it on the screen, Joe.
39:28Uh, what about the drill?
39:30It's some push push.
39:31Come on.
39:32But, usually, you see the crew running out.
39:34Right, right, right.
39:35We don't have any of it.
39:36So, virtual measurement.
39:38And, well, we get another challenge at the Saints.
39:40Get the first down on Sean Payton.
39:42Give us more time with you, Joe.
39:46And, Joe, tell us this.
39:47The way you try to get ready for a season.
39:49Okay, come back now.
39:51You've got Birmingham.
39:52You've got Orlando.
39:53And then you hit the ground running.
39:54Yes.
39:55Because there are a ton of games.
39:57You're short in October because it was only a couple of weeks or maybe ten days in October.
40:00It started on the 22nd, but at the same time, then it's a busy, busy November.
40:06Absolutely.
40:06It's a busy November.
40:08But you've got to start ramping up before November gets here.
40:11Right.
40:11You can't wait until November to turn the switch on.
40:14You have to slowly start ramping it up.
40:16Almost now, Joe.
40:19It's, it's, it's, um.
40:20You've got a lot of guys in the gym.
40:22Got a lot of guys in the gym.
40:23We've got 18, 20 guys in the gym.
40:25And so, um.
40:27And the group was just out in Los Angeles as a team, weren't they?
40:31Yes.
40:32Uh, and what happens in the NBA is every team, all 30 teams, the players do a one-week training
40:38camp that they organize.
40:41And.
40:41After review, the runner was short of the line to game.
40:45That will be fourth down.
40:47Excuse me.
40:48Correction.
40:49The ball will change over and downs.
40:50It will be Denver's ball first down.
40:52You know, John, this is longer than the food running.
40:56It is.
40:57And it, ah, well, it speeds things up to someone, somewhere.
41:01Yeah.
41:02I'm, Kellen's got the red flag in his hand.
41:05We can make this like a five-minute process.
41:07Well, he's going to challenge it now.
41:08It looks like he's considering it.
41:10He's got, got the flag close.
41:12You had mentioned the team out in Southern California.
41:19Yes.
41:20Guys get together.
41:21Leadership in that group.
41:23When I think of Herc Jones, Trey Murphy, and how, everybody wants to know how Zee doing.
41:27Zee's doing great.
41:28He was, he was out there, uh, going at it every day.
41:31Uh, it's an intense week.
41:33Uh, this is not like, uh, just a weekend getaway.
41:36This is an intense week of drills, practices, scrimmages, uh, lifting.
41:43I mean, guys go at it.
41:44It was a great week out there.
41:46Got him to win.
41:47And the bad quarterback, Sam Ellinger, out of Texas, now in his fifth year.
41:52He's brought down, game of about a yard.
41:55So, a good session out in L.A. for those guys.
41:58And, as I mentioned, people are wondering about Zion because if he's on the floor for 70 games,
42:03the Pels are a different team.
42:04Yeah, he is, uh, he's, he's great.
42:06He's in really good shape.
42:08Uh, it's been good.
42:09He's been really good.
42:11Uh, we've been challenging him.
42:13Like, you know, you can't keep doing the same things that you've done in the past
42:17and expect something different.
42:18And so, uh, he's stepped up to the challenge so far.
42:21And, you know, we're going to keep, keep pushing him and keep challenging him to be great.
42:25And Blake Watson turning the corner for the Denver Broncos.
42:28So, when we talk about leadership, it's heard in the NBA.
42:33So, you see the guys like Trey Murphy, who's fully invested in Herb Jones.
42:38I like what you did with Herb.
42:39You let him know, we want you here for them all.
42:41Absolutely.
42:41Is that the key with a city like New Orleans?
42:45We've seen Oklahoma City, smaller markets, guys that absolutely want to be here.
42:49Yeah, you and I had a conversation a few weeks ago about this, Joel.
42:53And I've said to guys, like, look, if you don't want to be here, man, like, come by the office, man.
42:59Let me find a home for you that you really want to be because there's no sense of me having you here if you don't want to be here.
43:06Like, if you don't want to be somewhere, you know what I'm saying, you can't be your best.
43:10Right.
43:11No, you can.
43:12It actually makes your team worse.
43:13It makes your team worse.
43:14That locker room.
43:14It sucks out of your locker room and all.
43:17And so, every guy that's here, Joel, has sat down with me and said, I absolutely want to be here, Joel.
43:22Yeah, and I know you and I have talked about it.
43:24Yep.
43:24You had that conversation with Zion.
43:26Oh, right away, the first conversation I had.
43:28I was like, do you really want to be here or not?
43:29Because if you don't, like, let's go ahead and get this done right now.
43:33Let me figure out that way.
43:33Yeah, yeah, let's do that right now.
43:35No, no, I want to be here.
43:37This is home for me.
43:37Okay, we can start from there and now we can go somewhere.
43:41It's four for the yard.
43:46And good play by Allende.
43:48And he may take it to this instance.
43:50He's pumped out of bounds right around the 10.
43:52It should be first and goal, and it will be right to the 10-yard line.
43:57Sanker saved the touchdown.
43:59With the angle on the sideline.
44:03Jeremiah Pierce.
44:05Well, how is Queen doing?
44:06Queen is doing well.
44:08How far away?
44:08They are training him big time, bro.
44:11I mean, like, as I said to him, like, you know, you have a hand situation here.
44:18But that doesn't stop your legs.
44:19Right.
44:19So he's running, running, running.
44:22Because, you know, I want you to be in incredible shape when you come back because you're going to be behind a little bit.
44:27So you've got to be in great shape to catch up.
44:29Else, you get hurt again.
44:30And so he's doing great.
44:33Fears is just, it's funny, you know, playing on his name, but he's fearless.
44:36Like, this young kid is just like, you know, when you're young like that, you don't think you can get hurt.
44:41You don't think anything could happen.
44:42And so he is just fearless on the court.
44:45And I love him.
44:46I love what he brings to us.
44:48He can get into the paint.
44:49You've got to have a bag in the NBA that you can get into the paint.
44:51Absolutely.
44:51Absolutely.
44:52We've now got to be back at the 15 after the Boston Sharks.
44:55And we're going to get a play.
45:03Delay a game.
45:04Offense number four.
45:06Five-yard penalty.
45:08Second down.
45:08So do you break things down in increments?
45:12I always say, like, every 10 games you get an idea of what's going on, like an eighth of a season.
45:17I really look at the month.
45:18I look at each month before the month's start.
45:20How many road games we got, how many home games we got, what's the travel like, what's the toughness of the schedule.
45:26I just look at each month and just try to focus on that.
45:30And don't focus on anything else.
45:32Let's just take care of this month right here.
45:35Yeah, because November is very busy for that NBA pop.
45:38Well, then, it's a different story.
45:40The round of the wide receiver screen, Saints took care of it very effectively.
45:46Michael Mandi on the reception.
45:49San Diego.
